Once installed, the goal was to move a 4 port USB 1.1 hub off the main ports and attach a CD-RW that could take advantage of the USB 2.0 speed. All of this was done simply and effectively. I'd get use product again in an instant.
Then I tried to use an external USB2 hard drive, and it was really slow (USB 1 speeds). Then IOGear told me my hardware isn't supported. I even have a G3! But they don't support Beige, only Blue & White. (All-in-one is like Beige.) Read carefully! ... we're supposed to check the website before buying any of their products? Well, no big deal, I probably won't buy any more of their products. ...

Captures I420 and RGB24, among others. Can do a full CIF (352x288) 30 fps capture that is silky smooth. This is much better than most of these capture devices, I can tell you. Many don't support 352x288 (only 320x280), or drop the framerate, or capture with horrible horizontal interlacing lines. I didn't use any of the prepackaged software, or capture to disk. I only wanted it for live video capture for videoconferencing, and it works terrific for that. And at about 63 dollars, you can't beat the price for this quality. You will need a good quality NTSC analog camera to plug into it - just be aware.
The only good part of the deal was the MGI software, the Belkin Videobus I purchaced came with a video editor and a photo suit.

I did have a problem when I plugged a Zip drive (USB 1.1 device) into the card and put my Mac to sleep. It would not wake up. I don't know if this is a problem with the Iomega driver or USB card. The computer sleep function worked fine with the Zip plugged into the Mac's built-in USB 1.1 port. I've heard there can be some problems with some devices or cards not being compatable with the sleep function, but when I sent an e-mail to Keyspan tech support to ask about this, I never received an answer.
Works just great on my G4 Mac. No drivers to install, nothing to download or adjust, no jumpers, no nothing. Plug it in and it works. Another good experience with Keyspan (and Apple) -- I will continue buying their stuff as long as they keep putting out good products. :)
But think about this: when you buy a card like this, the documentation and technical support are also going to be important. Without proper documentation, you won't know what you're doing... The documentation consists of one paper card, about 5" x 8", and it tells you what to do, but it doesn't tell you what to expect or how to grade success. For instance, it indicates you'll be prompted to load the drivers on their CD-ROM. But that's only for SOME versions of Windows (for other versions of Windows, it's supposed to load fine off the drivers on your hard drive or off your Windows discs; these details are not mentioned - - so how do you know?) Secondly, it tells you you can check to see if it's been loaded by looking in the Device Manager in Windows Control Panel. But it doesn't tell you the NAME of the device you should be seeing. If you already have USB ports (say, 1.1. or such) you'll see multiple listings. The documentation doesn't tell you what to look for: another company's tech support (one from whom I'd bought an external hard drive) had to point out the problem to me. And if you want to TALK to tech support to get assistance? I think you will be under-supported. I happened to speak to the same person on two different days, and she was helpful, but their hours are only 9-5 Pacific, and during lunch no one answers the phone. So, if you buy this over the weekend and have problems, forget about getting help before noon Monday (if you're in the East, like me). And if you have a day job that takes you away from your home PC and makes it difficult to call during working hours? Uh, I hope you're east of the Pacific time zone. (Here, by the way, is another example of poor documentation - - the card says what their tech support hours are, but fails to mention the time zone; conceivably you could waste a call when they're not there.) Now, as for other issues associated with what I've bought, perhaps I do have a lemon. But I have made several efforts to install it, and with each failed attempt cleaned up something on my PC to give them the benefit of the doubt. Today I backed up files and programs, reformatted my hard drive and reinstalled Windows, to make sure everything loaded properly and efficiently. And with all said and done, I'm having the same problems I had three days ago, no improvement. The wizard found the new piece more quickly than before, but everything still froze. (Maybe it's SUPPOSED to freeze, and no one told me?) This has been a nightmare, and I wish you better luck. ... Read more | |

No fuss, no difficulty in installation - simply downloaded the most recent drivers from OrangeMicro's website before buying it. Installed the drivers and then installed the card - voila! Four usb 2.0 ports! I have a 48x24x48 Iomega external usb 2.0 burner; the card is completely backwards compatible and there is no loss of speed as far as I have been able to tell. (I am working off of XP Pro OS - no SP's installed.) And seeing as I have seven usb devices connecting to my notebook such a thing is very handy to have. The accompanying external power supply could be a liability for those who need to travel with the card and some device or another, but I do not - mine is a desktop replacement and if I take it somewhere I unplug everything anyway before I go. So for me it is no bother. I would highly recommend this card if you have several usb devices of both sorts (2.0 and 1.1) to your notebook if it is a desktop replacement like mine is. If you are a notebook user of the more mobile type, though, this card might not be for you.

The card comes with a 6 to 4 pin Firewire cable, so no need to purchase one seperately (like I did not knowing that). Manual is fine. Installation was easy (I have installed cards before though - not sure how easy the installation would be for someone who has never opened their computer's case before). Software that comes with it did not work on Windows ME for me (even though the software's site says no problems are reported), but I'm using Windows Movie Maker and that's working fine for now.
