4-0 out of 5 stars Pretty Good
I needed an external drive for my laptop, one which support the older USB 1.1 connection and this one caught my attention with it's design and low price. The drive works very well. I get a 4X burning speed, which is acceptable considering I don't have a USB 2.0 port. It's not portable and doesn't function as a portable cd player, but frankly why would I want to use a CDRW as a cd player.

It's easy to set up and works fine with Easy CD creator (included software).

The only problem I have is that it doesn't work for iTunes, at least not for me. I found that a bit frustrating since iTunes doesn't let you use 3rd party software to burn cds.
However, it does work with Napster 2.0 and I'm forced to switch from iTunes due to that.

Bottom Line: consistant drive, works well, but keep in mind that it doesn't work with iTunes for me and it might not work for you.

To some extent, greed is the corporate order now. The fact that most (established) companies are only interested in meeting their profit-targets relegates quality to the background.
Yes, this "Philips Jack-Rabbit 24x12x40-external-CD-ReWriter" spots a healthy 8MB data buffer capacity. It supports USB 2.0, as well as both Windows and Mac operating systems. But that is all! Its overall performance hovers on the average. It has very limited features.
Whereas many no-name external CD burners come with earphone ports and volume control buttons for playing music CDs, this Philips CD-RW has neither. It could not even boast of an ON/OFF switch or button; and only turns on when connected to a PC or Mac. Please, do not look at this article, if you hope to enjoy music CDs directly from your external CD-RW.
Despite its advertised 8MB buffer capacity, and 'Seamless Link' buffer-underrun protection, expect this CD-RW to produce one 'coaster' for every seven CDs it records well. In fact, its mediocre bundled-software is so lousy that it won't let you ascertain if the underrun problem is from the recorder itself, or as a result of poor quality CD media.
Finally, before jumping at its popular Philips trademark, note that this CD-RW has just an average output. It has no outstanding feature! And, quite unlike many external CD-RW, you cannot use this "Philips JR24CDRW" as a portable CD player. I am very reluctant to recommend this CD-RW, but I hope you make a good choice. All the best!

2-0 out of 5 stars can't burn dvd+r's
I have probably wrecked about a 12 DVD+R discs in this burner. I have 2.4GHz computer and have tried Nero 5, 5.5 and 6. I even took the advice of the guys at Philips to turn off every program in the task bar. Half of the discs cancel burning before they finish and the other half are mostly, if not entirely, unreadable. CDs and DVD+RWs work fine, but I already had a Cde burner and RWs cost twice as much as the Rs and they can't be put in DVD players.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very reliable
I have read other reviews about this machine. Some had problems connecting it to Master and others to Slave. It worked both way for my PC. Now I can back up all those "A Bugs life", "Ants"....and other DVDs that I keep buying for my kids and they keep damaging. At first I could not back up some DVDs because of copy protection, but I now I can do that for any DVD. The Philips dvdrw228 can copy DVD on the fly very fast, as short as 20 Minutes, unlike some other writers that will take up to 1 hour or more on the fly. Also, it burns DVD perfectly, no over burn, or soft burn. Because it has an advanced system to major the best burn for the Disc (Discs are made differently).

5-0 out of 5 stars Much better than older Philips burner drives
I had one of the first CD-R drive (CDR2600) Philips made several years ago that I had wrecked many discs in. This time I got this drive with the computer 2.8GHz Compaq Presario 8000 I bought. I have to say it's a day and night difference. So far I have only used DVD+RW and CD-R discs and it worked flawlessly every time. The speed is satisfied. It surprised me that the drive writes faster with my old SCSI Jaz drive than with the 48X CD-ROM drive on the same bus with the burner. I have yet to try burn photo CD or VCD or video DVD. But for burning data discs, it's adequate.

4-0 out of 5 stars The drive works great for me.
I have had no problems with my drive...I've used several different brands and types of disks....good clean burns each time.

The software that comes with it is pretty good, too...Nero is considered one of the best.

5-0 out of 5 stars Works great so far
This drive works great so far. I've had it for a month with no major problems. The +RW format seems to be superior with better compatibility to the -RW format for what I use it for. (I have and use all 5 DVD recordable formats.)

I have a problem with installing the software disk that came with it, and it seems to stem from having multiple DVD burners installed on the system (or perhaps using it on a ATA bus add-on card--the installer can't see the drive if it does a check purely through the ATAPI interfaces). But my drive generally works with my old software with appropriate +R/+RW patches installed.

My only coasters that I've generated were due to my error, not the burner. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Burner
I've had my Philips CD burner since May of last year (2001). I have never recieved an error with it and the cds are perfect practically every time I burn a disc. I've done entire mp3 discs with 150+ songs and every one comes out as crisp as before I burned it. I've also done cds with 3000+ files and don't receive errors when I go to use it. And that goes for every time I burn those types of cds.

I've tested the burner out with Nero to see how fast it could actually read. Because of the fact Nero only tests the drive out for a short amount of time, I was unable to get a clear idea of its max, but the drive was reading at around 19x and still increasing in speed. Now, you can compare that to my regular drive that says it will do 40x, but only reached about 4 or 5.

In May it was a great deal at the price and, in my opinion, still is today.

1-0 out of 5 stars BAD BURNER BLUES
Just got a PCRW804K17 on ebay for $12.00. I thought WOW!! What a deal!!! Sure, it was an older model, but was in mint condition. I soon found out why. It never worked, therefore was never used. This piece of JUNK does not work with XP, and apparently from all the other reviews (and searching myself) Philips has not released drivers for XP. After searching Philips website, it appears they tried to cover up making this drive. I only wish I had did my homework (reading reviews) before placing a bid.

1-0 out of 5 stars Never worked, and customer support sucks
Bad dirve, bad service. Will never touch phlips computer hardware again. They said they will call you back with a solution, they never did. And it happened more than once.
(BTW, I am a computer geek. Do not tell me I do not know how to install a cdrw drive. It even wont recongize a music cd).

1-0 out of 5 stars No driver for XP
I cannot find the XP driver for the PCRW804K17 CD-RW Drive. All of my searches found other users looking. No luck on Philips' website. Perhaps I'll try to email them, or use their live assistance; but I don't think I'll have any better luck than the other countless users who failed in this approach.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great CD-RW Recommended... READ THE BOX
I use thie drive with Win 98SE on a Compaq Presario Laptop. I chose this drive b/c of its USB connectivity. I got it dirt cheap and have only been impressed with it and the included software, Adaptec. I would HIGHLY RECOMMEND THIS PRODUCT. If you read the box it says its not compatible with windows ME and it is compatible with Windows 95 assuming you have a USB port and the port is supplied with drivers. The earlier version of win 95 did not support USB, later on it did. Check your stuff.. Its a great bargain and looks sharp. A++++

2-0 out of 5 stars not so good, get a more expensive one!!
First, be sure you'll get the software (worth over $60) and the driver (hard to find the correct one). it was very hard to find and to install this machine to my win98. If you get errors with your software, try CDR Tools Front End (free and good) with 31MB fifo, DAO mode, burnproof. It is hardly compatible with win98 (you'll experience problems) but it works for cheap product standards. If you have money, go get a better one. And another note, Philips does not provide assistance with this product unless you pay them $19.95!!!!!!!!! i gave a 2 because it is working (for now. I probably won't restart my win98 ever again :) )

1-0 out of 5 stars I thought it was me!
Over and over I've tried to get this to work. With absolutely no luck. I wish I would have read these reviews before my purchase! It would have saved me cash and grief. Why I keep trying to get my laptop to connect with the drive is beyond me!

1-0 out of 5 stars Waste of Money....
This product has given me more grief that I could ever imagine. Installing the product is pretty easy, and it is recognized in "My Computer". But getting the software packages to recognize the CD recorder is the major problem. I have bought 3 different CD recording software packages, downloaded all the software updates which are 'supposed' to deal with the recognition problem, and the software still does not recognize the CD recorder. So, the bottom line is, a very useless product! VERY useless indeed.
But looking on the bright side, if you want a second CD-ROM to add to the one you already have, it works great!

2-0 out of 5 stars Worked great for a while....
I got this burner because I was looking for something inexpensive. I used it with my IBM iSeries ThinkPad. It took me forever to install and setup, but once I got it going it worked awesome for oh about a month and a half... All of a sudden it stopped working, crashes my computer all the time. Piece of garbage... Tech support is useless. I guess you get what you pay for. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Unit!
This is my first CD-RW. It isn't the fastest but I was looking for a value. I had it up and running on the first boot. I used the included Adaptec Easy CD Creator software and had my first music CD completed within an hour of opening the box. It burned 12 tracks in about 15 minutes. The only minor glitch was the included installation CD failed to load. I don't know what is on it because I didn't need to use it. All in all I am extremely happy with it and can recommend it highly.

5-0 out of 5 stars A really cool burner
I highly recommend this cdrw. Very simple and easy installation. The included software shows you step by step on how to do the installation if you are new to cd-rom installation. I'm really good though. Anyway, Definitely, if you are looking for a new cdrw drive, check this one out. Oh yeah, It's great because its compatible with most cd-r disks other than faster drives that you have to slow down.

1-0 out of 5 stars never buy it if you do not want to waste your money and time
not even an one star product - a third class product from a first class company(!). It worked initially in Windows 98SE. But once I tried XP - problem started - the customer service seems to be from North Pole - worthless and rude. After weeks hardwork - it suddenly started working again before gone dead for ever (within one and half years of slow bad performance).

1-0 out of 5 stars Burner works OK and DIES after 2 years
This burner was my first burner and it worked fine for the few times that I used it. I was unable to get it to interact with the existing CDROM drive in ny computer though. Sometimes it didn't like to burn onto CDR media and I don't know why. Now, after about 2 years, it had DIED. Right now it is detected by windows 98, showing up in Device Manager and a drive letter does appear in Windows Explorer. The strange thing is that I cannot get the stupid thing to recognize a disk, either normal CD or anything. The activity light constantly blinks and it does not read the disks and when a disk has been placed the drive DOES NOT OPEN up again. You cannot get it to open to retrieve the disk until the computer is rebooted.

I do NOT recommend this drive unless you want to buy a new drive every two years. and the $70+ price i saw on this website is pathetic and highway robbery.

2-0 out of 5 stars Best used as recycle waste!
Well, It worked "OK" for about a year. All of the sudden it stopped working after the warranty was completed. Did not work well with virus software installed and never create CD-ROMs at the max speed. Overheated and crash the computer several times before it completely died. Buy something else!!!!!! ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Outstanding Unit
I had it up and running on a WIN98SE 1ghz machine in about 10 minutes. Not a single problem. I've burned about 50 or 60 CDs so far and not a single coaster among them, most of which were done at 40X. Keep in mind folks that if you buy CHEAP Discs, you get CHEAP results. I've burned at slower speeds on CD-RWs and no problem with them either. I prefer Easy CD Creator 5 which does not support this drive, so I use NERO. Thats just my preference for software however and I guess I can get used to NERO.
Strictly speaking about the Philips I don't see how you can beat it. 700MB CD in under three minutes (Music, Data, MP3 it doesn't matter)

2-0 out of 5 stars Tough to set up
It writes music perfectly, but for some reason I haven't been able to get it to write any sort of executeable file without the file being unreadable.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best CDRW drive on the market (and affordable)
My previous CDRW (pacific xxxx) have about 20% fail rate

I was about to buy the Sony 40x12x48 one while I saw this Philips
one with the same price
So I think, well, Philips is the inventor of the CD, they must make good product in this field.
It has 4mb buffer (Sony has 2mb)

It burns fast (burn one CD in < 3 minutes)
Fail proof (even you accidentaly eject the source CD ...)
seemless: For some music CD doesn't have "gap" between tracks
like broadway musicals, this is perfect

Never burn a bad CD, yet (I tried 22 CDs)
Runs not as hot as my previous drive

5 star recommended !! ... Read more
