2-0 out of 5 stars Too Expensive to Use, Maintain, and Repair
I bought the Xerox XD105f Digital Copier and Laser Printer two years ago. When it works, it produces clear, clean copies and it does so quickly. The auto-copy feature is helpful for big jobs and the reduction/enlarge feature is also useful. With that stated, here is the bad news. Soon after I purchased the system, the bottom paper tray stopped feeding paper. I had to use the side tray to make copies. Then the drum started to print smeary black streaks along the edge of the paper. I changed out the print cartridge, but this didn't fix the problem. And the cost of the cartridge? Oh, about $189.00. I then accessed the Xerox support web site and downloaded the instructions for cleaning the drum and inkwell. I followed the instructions - which were pretty simple - but it didn't fix the problem - it made it worse. Not only were there more streaks on the paper, the streaks contained powdery black ink that just rubbed off. Finally, the printer stopped working altogether.

I spent several hours online trying to find an authorized Xerox Repair Center in my area, but none exist. I checked the Xerox web site and sent an email to the Team Xerox folks. The answer I got back, "if my product is still under warranty, they can send a repair person out for a $250.00 service call, not including parts and tax. Or, I could get a reconditioned unit, but keep my drum, print cartridge, and power cord to use."

Does this sound like a good plan to you?

No, I didn't think so either.

I retired the Xerox 105f to the garage and immediately purchased the Hewlett-Packard Officejet 7110. Not only does it cost 30% less than the Xerox product, it does a lot more - it copies and scans in color, prints (with reduction/enlargment), and faxes. And the ink cartridges cost around $30.00. If I have a problem with the H-P, I know where I can get it fixed.

Granted, the technology has moved on since I bought the XD105f, and perhaps I cannot make a fair comparison with a new product, but if the Xd105 had performed as expected, there would besome customer loyalty here. Sorry, I decided on an H-P.

Thanks for listening.

1-0 out of 5 stars XD105f Digital Copier/Printer - failure
I am very disappointed in this product. It has all the features that I was looking for - computer printing, copying from glass screen and from document feeder. I experienced paper jaming and grinding noises. I was unable to clear the jam or the grinding noise, and face the probability of having to send the product back for service. A relatively expensive home printer/copier should perform better, and be more reliable than this one.

Constant paper jams unless you use the more expensive xerox multipurpose primary image paper. Envelopes get pretty squashed also. Initial toner cartridge only good for limited number of copies. ... Read more

Amazon.com Review

The Xerox Workcenter XD-100 digital copier/laser printer is the sourceof newfound freedom for the home business owner. Set it up with your PC or as astandalone and you can schedule it to produce as many as 100 copies, reduce orenlarge them, and print text and black graphics at any time.

The XD-100 is large (20 by 17.5 by 12 inches and 41 pounds) and requiressubstantial desk space. We recommend you take seriously the orange warning pageand follow the printed directions to avoid damaging the XD-100. We began byremoving two protective screws and installing the ink cartridge; in seconds wewere in copy heaven. Xerox includes a poster-sized waterproof and foolproofsetup guide, which walks you through each step, but why anyone would need apermanent setup display is a mystery unless you plan on moving regularly.

We had our first paper jam at copy number 18 which, despite all user's guidesuggestions, was best cleared by removing the paper tray and easing the page outfrom under the unit. Nevertheless, we found the XD-100 fast and efficient, andour copies were cleaner than those from a major copy center. You can set thecopy contrast control and the exposure modes to auto, text, photo, and tonersave. When set on photo mode, the XD-100's copies of images showed a greaterrange and nuance of grays.

The XD-100's most important quality is its speed; it prints at eight pages perminute and copies at 10 pages per minute with crisp 600 x 600 dpi resolution. The XD-100 stands alone as a copier or connects to a PC, producing laser-perfectresults. We made great use of reduction and enlargement, from 50 to 200 percentin 1 percent increments, as well as six presets: 50, 78, 86, 100, 129, and 200percent. Paper loads into a drawer, and printed copies emerge in an efficientpermanent tray. The drawer holds 250 sheets and the unit prints or copies ontoenvelopes, transparencies, labels, card stock, and stationery in sizes ofletter, legal, and executive. We tried hand-feeding envelopes and were verysatisfied with printing quality, although this manual method is slow. There isno pause button; to reset we had to press clear and begin again. The maximumsize for copies is 8.5 by 14 inches, and the maximum size for originals is 10 by14 inches. The unit's hinged top accommodates thicker items such as magazinesand books. The XD-100 is supported by a three-year parts-and-labor warranty.--David Greenberger

3-0 out of 5 stars Great While It Lasted But I Won't Do It Again
How can a company grow its business when there's no follow through on service once you've purchased, and outrageous costs for parts? On a scale of 1-10, I'd rate my XD at a 10. I've had it at least 3 years, never had a problem. Then I experienced an "accordian" paper jam. Need a New Fuser Assembly. The one dealer near me said he no longer sells parts, only new copiers. Cost of part - almost as much as the copier. Time to wait for part - 10 days. Technician cost to install - almost as much as the toner, per hour. Result - I'm buying a brand new Canon.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good Machine, Poor Service
I own several XD100 copiers and have had the same problems with each one. A plastic guide just inside the right hand door breaks signaling a J2 jam, the gear on the end of the hot roller breaks causing the paper to jam at the roller, and the drum unit develops lines before the end-of-life light signals replacement which I correct with a recycled drum from a local toner cartridge recycler. A technician can easily replace the other parts.

The copys are top quality, and for the price, the machine functions great.

2-0 out of 5 stars Great...Until It Breaks (way too soon.)
I bought, essentially, this same machine 2 years ago. It worked well and my family used it on a regular basis. Then -- it started malfunctioning. The Xeroxed copy looked blurred (like the something had slid a little bit during the copying process.) We read the manual and did everything the trouble shooting guide recommended (cleaned it thoroughly, replaced both rollers, bought a new cartridge, etc.) Still, the copy was blurred. We called Xerox support. The tech kept insinuating that we had not REALLY done all that the trouble shooting guide recommended and he acted as though we were wasting his time. We assured him that in fact we had done the whole shi-bang. Since it was past the one year warranty -- he said there was NOTHING he could do for us. I asked if he could recommend an authorized Xerox repair center (we live in LA, big city.) "No. We do not have any authorized repair centers." He said our only recourse was to have one of their technicians make a house-call to the tune of $250 minimum -- even if is was determined the machine could not be repaired. So, after just 2 years we are tossing our Xerox Work Center, new rollers, new cartridge and all. (To tell you the truth, I felt duped by the trouble shooting guide -- which makes you buy all new internal stuff, first, before a tech will talk to you.) I would NOT buy this machine again, because it should have lasted longer, because the support people are insulting and dismissive, and the repair options are near non-existent. -- A Very Disappointed Buyer

1-0 out of 5 stars Xerox has no credibility, don't been cheated again!
Firstly, when I bought this machine in the spring of 2000 from Officemax, there is a $50 mail-in-rebate promise from Xerox. But I never got any response from Xerox after I registered and mailed them receipt. Secondly, they not only overcharged for this lousy machine (over $500, much higher than other similar machine, but very often a lot of carbon powder overfilled and no any tonor can run claimed 6000 pages, I guess it is about 3000-5000), but also overcharged for tonor and drum about $180-200 for each, although they really don't not deserve so much, as you can buy similar ones or refilled ones at about $20.00 from other ink shops. Thirdly, they pay you penny to recycle tonor and drum ($5.00), and often forget to refund you promised money. Finally, this machine, like Xerox company, is not reliable. The main problems are tonor broken and paper jams (unless you use expensive printer paper). I have throw this machine away after only three years due to paper jams and very noisy operation.

Do not buy troubles!

2-0 out of 5 stars Looking for a better choice
Bought the xd 100 f model around March 1999 which is essentially the same machine as this one with the only difference being that the f has two paper trays. Never used as a printer, only as copier. Spent [alot of money]back then, used for a medical office the past four years. It finally broke completely down this April 2003. This is not a long time considering the price and promises. Customer service lacked, since they don't volunteer to come out to our remote area, and only after much and repeated pleading did they come twice in four years. Took out a part!! and did not replace it the first time!
We did buy the extended warranty, but when it was time to renew we had to certify that the unit is in exellent condition. However the copies didn't come out even anymore and by that time it was bad to the degree that half the page was not legible and in no condition for medical documents. Tech support actually lied this time around, saying on site service is not available, only phone support, to one of the employees who then gave up. All tries by phone support did never solve the unevenness problem. By this time we got the letter inviting to renew extended warranty within 30 days of the letter and certify model is o.k. But tech support would not come, so we couldn't. Bad luck, eh. I am glad that prices came a little down and I'll go for a Canon this time. If it breaks after 4 years anyways, why not save on the machine price? Toner/Drum replacements were ridiculously expensive for this unit also and never lasted the promise pages even though we put on the toner saver feature for internal documents. Needless to say: We will NEVER buy a XEROX again. The two stars are for the first year it did work excellently. But one year is not enough in this price range. The second star is for it very rarely having paper jams. That's it folks. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Not too good.
While working as a legal assistant for my Mother's law firm, the Xerox XD-120F was the office machine with which I did my work. And the problems were plentiful...paper-jams, toner and drum malfunctions, messy ink spills, and a myriad of other technical difficulties. Worse yet, the machine was purchased less than three years ago. The warranty is still effective, but Xerox's service is shoddy at best. Their on-site tech support is inept, with the serviceman advising me to "feed the paper manually" regarding the oopier problems that were adversely affecting production.

The XD-120F isn't the most deplorable copier on the market, as it initially worked well and produced copies at a reasonably fast rate with decent resolution. But if you're an office or home owner, you can certainly do better than this unit, yet still be cost-effective. Brother seems to put out solid, long-lasting products at affordable prices. The firm has had a Brother fax machine for over two years and it works like a dream. Hope this review was helpful.

5-0 out of 5 stars This thing does what!
The XD120f is a landmark unit. It copies at 12 pages a minute and PRINTS at 8 pages a minute. Its a Laser Digital machine so you have the latest technology. It has (2) 250 sheet trays so you can put 8.5x11 in one and 8.5x14 in the other. With a quick setup, you can put 8.5x11 and 8.5x14 paper in the automatic document feeder (adf) and it will AUTOMATICALLY determine which tray to get the paper from! You can tell it to shrink all copies onto 8.5x11 or make them fit on 8.5x14 however you want it. It has a bypass on the side incase you want to put thicker paper through the unit to print or copy onto. A 3 year onsite warranty and a reasonable price make this unit a first rate business buy. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Solid, dependable, flexible
I have really enjoyed this machine. It has served me well so far. I have only two issues--it can have trouble being fed envelopes and it is near impossible to use my computer when the unit is printing as there is a horrendous lag. Otherwise, its a dream--great quality, fast, flexible and practical

4-0 out of 5 stars Works as advertised, double-sided great feature
I reluctantly purchased the printer on faith after having read the other review. I tested one in the store and it jammed, though it was the last page in the supply. I cleared it and it was fine. Copies of color photographs come out quite impressive in the grayscale photo reproductions. I got the unit because of the double-sided copying feature, which works quite well and is a treat to use. Two single pages can become one double-sided even when fed from the ADF. This proved quite useful during tax time to reduce paper I sent to an accountant. I've copied yellow paper with pencil writing quite successfully. On the down side, double-sided copying only really works on quantity one copies. The unit also doesn't offer scan once print many like another brand. I'm not using and have not tried it as a regular printer. I prefer not to mix functions among devices. It has worked reliably now for a few weeks without a single jam using ADF and double-sided copying. It takes some space, but you can save space on the right side if you don't need the special manual feed. I like the output design of the unit that helps save space. The unit can be hard to get as most stores don't seem to stock this particular model. The small incremental cost for the extra features is well worth it, especially if you desire more double-sided in quantity one versus many multiple copy jobs where a scan once print many unit might be preferred.

1-0 out of 5 stars The XD130df WorkCenter...the facts
The copy function works as advertised, just try to print from either DOS or Windows and you will soon enjoy the exquisite pain of absolute frustration...this thing jams more then Interstate 5 through Los Angelas at 5:00pm...Oh, you want graphic lines, I suggest buying a permanent marker when you pick up this workhorse...you'll need it ... I meant to type XL2120 but I inadverdently kept presssing the shif key and it came out XL@!@), oh well, that's pretty close to what I want to say anyway:

...The machine is a laser printer coier in one. Great buy? Wrong! The machine started with a lot of paper jamming, probably ate some $50 of my paper, only until later I found you should keep the paper stack always with some quantity (mor than 20 sheets?) then the problem goes away, more or less.

My friend later told me it only has a partially filled toner cartridge and a new toner would cost me an arm and a leg. Sure enough, how about a 30% filled cartridge and a...new toner (btw Amazon.com advertises the toner for this is "economical")...

Well, after I run out of toner, I guess I'll just have to pac it up and have it forwarded to XRX's CEO (what's her name?) withmy compliments... ... Read more

Everybody wants to save space and reduce clutter while maintaining theoffice equipment that a business needs. The Xerox WorkCentre XK40c provides acomprehensive space-saving solution. With ink-jet black and color printing, flatbed scanning, and black and color copying in one multipurpose unit, all ofthe functions that your business uses are available at the touch of a button.

The WorkCentre XK40c is an impressively substantial, sturdy, andprofessional-looking unit with easy-to-understand operations. We got a kick outof the enclosed user's guide, which was a Xerox copy with a brightly coloredfront and back cover--a great way to show off the product. The guide is heavilydetailed to ensure a trouble-free setup, so we recommend taking time to reviewit. We found the directions to be clear and comprehensive.

Setting up the WorkCentre XK40c was easy. We dropped in the two printcartridges, connected the cables, and installed the software. In just a fewminutes, we were fully armed for office operation. The WorkCentre XK40c copierworked well as a standalone, producing fine copies at a maximum 8 ppm for blackand 4 ppm for color, although we found that it took more than a minute per pageto get the color quality we sought.

We especially appreciated the reduction and enlargement features offeringvariations from a 25 percent reduction to 400 percent enlargement in 1 percentincrements. However, there seemed to be no way to leap up to the higherenlargement sizes without going through the smaller sizes first. We mademultiple copies, up to 50 at a time, on a variety of paper types and sizesincluding letter, legal, and envelopes. A range of adjustments allowed us tonuance the settings for best copy quality.

The WorkCentre XK40c is not designed as a high-volume copier/printer, but wethink it can satisfy most of the basic needs in a small office. You'll stillwant to use a copy shop for large quantities or top quality. --BarbaraPrice

Amazon.com Review

Reap the benefits of fast and sharp digital copying and laser printing with the Xerox WorkCentre XE80. Advanced but accessible technology, a simple but well-chosen suite of features, and a compact but sturdy design combine to make a great addition to your home office or small business desktop.

The WorkCentre makes a great impression, even just coming out of its box. It seems solidly built, attractive, and unimposing. To setup the WorkCentre, we followed the included Quick Reference Card, which covers unpacking the unit, attaching the accessories, inserting the toner cartridge, and installing the PC software. These instructions permitted essentially flawless setup in about 10 minutes.

Just after we turned on the WorkCenter, we started making copies. The controls were intuitively obvious for enlarging, reducing, and setting the number of copies. The output was rich, sharp, and detailed; the gray shades were balanced, and there were no unexpected spots, blemishes, or streaks.

To test the printing functions, we started our favorite graphics program and printed previously scanned artwork. The output was very sharp, and the WorkCentre's gray-scale interpretation of our original's color was utilitarian-looking in 300 dpi and warm-looking in 600 dpi.

We also tested a variety of TrueType fonts, and the text was, of course, 600-dpi-laser-pefect. Colored text was interpreted and gray-scaled as we expected, although the red and green in our original appeared not only gray but also pixelated in the output.

Overall printing was very fast, both in terms of paper path throughput and the time to transfer data from our PC to the WorkCentre's memory buffer. Only 65 seconds passed between clicking the Print button in our Windows application holding eight copies of output in our hands.

Except for the initial setup, we did not need to consult the documentation for any printing or copying functions. We admire the WorkCentre's straightforward design, setup, and suitability to function. This is an excellent printer/copier for the small office environment.

I bought this machine for my personal use. Being a college student living in a dorm, you can guess how many ppl use this machine and it's still giving the same performance as on Day 1! The only thing that's missing is a scanner which could've been added since it'a already a digital copier.

Find me a Laser Digital machine that can Copy and Print 8.5x14 for $349. I don't think it exists. The paper tray holds 250 sheets and the unit has a 3 year warranty. This unit is a die hard consistent Copier/printer. It's just a work horse. The cover even lifts up when you have to put books on it. Even though it says copies are only 6 pages a minute, the consistency at which they came out seemed more like 8 or so. It does print at 8 pages per minute, but only copies at 6. To get a laser printer/copier for $349 is a great deal no matter how you look at it. Besides, its a Xerox. These guys invented this stuff. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Nice little multi-station while it worked
I didn't really use it for scanning or printing purposes, but the copying function worked quite well until recently (lifetime of about 3 yrs). During copying function now, there seems to be gear grinding noises .. but copying is still functional. Toner is expensive, at approximately 1 hundred dollars.

Pros: Cheap, small footprint, not-heavy, copies at moderate speed.
Cons: Starting to malfunction at 3 yrs time (can be expected, cheap product), toner is expensive

3-0 out of 5 stars could be better
My mom bought this as a gift for my dad for Christmas. We were using it as a copier for a few weeks because our Epson 440 was having problems. It is an excellent copier and I highly recommend it for that. The printing feature cuts off a little bit on the side though. Also when doing anything that involves feeding paper, the thing tries to feed about 10 sheets of paper at once(happened to me 2x). Then, to get the paper out if you can't pull it out, you have to take out both the toner and the drum and then pull it out that way. Then to load paper, there is a lever that you have to pull up to load the paper instead of just sticking it in and leaving like most things. And aren't a B & W scanner and copier exactly the same thing? It also tends to distort pictures a little bit(making faces shiner and weird). It's ok for light use, but definitly not a big business copier. And it doesn't come with a USB cable so if you want to use a color printer with it too, you must go out and buy a cable for that. An ok buy-not recommended for big business use.

1-0 out of 5 stars Bad product, crappy software, worst tech support
First, Xerox claimed that they support Windows 2000 Professional, which was totally bogus. The "new" driver for Windows 2000 on their website is the one for Windows NT4. Tech support was the most imcompetent bunch I've ever seen. I was told conflicting stories by 3 different reps. Then the last person I talked to stated that USB connection only works on Windows 98, and does not work on WinME or 2000. It was funny the person I talked to before that said Windows 2000 only works with USB connection. Oh, they DO NOT ship a USB cable with it. If you buy the thing, you have to run out buy your own USB cable, only to find out it does not work. This WorkCentre only functions as a walk up copier right now. I would advise any who are lured by Xerox's cheap price and sales promotions to reconsider. If you look at the drivers on Xerox's web site, it have not been updated since 8/1999. I guess that is why Xerox is having finacial problem.

3-0 out of 5 stars Cheap, but not that cheap
Small, easy to use. Supplies are a bit expensive given the fact that they have to be replaced every couple of days. ... Read more
