Wow!
This is the best MFC out there -- no question. It scans at lightening speeds with the automatic sheet feeder. The printer prints very fast too at 21 ppm. Terrific controls, with multi-line display. This machine is built to last. I spent several months comparing all of the MFCs out there. Cheaply put together
Very cheap plastic paper-feeder tray snapped in easily enough for me, but it never snapped back out, nor would it feed the paper used for fax confirmation in easily. The other feeding system for the actual faxes seemed to work just fine at first, but then I noticed the paper frayed noticeably on one side if you resent it several times--not a good flaw if you want to resend one page, like a resume, to multiple employers. One last drawback is the included ink cartridge that is meant only as a "test cartridge" for up to 30 pages of use. Then, for around $20, you are supposed to buy a replacement ink cartridge that will last for another 150 pages of use. Well, the price was nice, but the product was not. I bought this at Office Depot and to their credit, they gave me a full refund without any re-stocking or re-packing fees, quite unlike CompUSA's return policy. I feel sorry for the poor fellow who has to re-pack that thing, though. Good luck on getting that paper feeder back out.

Good economical fax for home or small office
I use this in my home office. I don't send alot of faxes or make alot of copies so I didn't need anything fancy and didn't want anything overly technical or expensive. This fits my needs perfectly, beginning with its low cost ($59 new, after $10 rebate, from on-line merchant). It's small so doesn't hog desk space, easy to set up and use, has plenty of features (more than I'll ever need or use) and though the print quality isn't the best you'll ever see, it is easily legible and certainly satisfactory, for both faxing and copying. It may not be the machine for large offices or someone who sends alot of faxes or makes alot of copies, but, as an economical fax machine for occasional use in a home or small office, I wouldn't hesitate to recommend this one. ... Great for home use

Print problem
There seems to be a print problem with these printers. I was thrilled to see the price with so many features. So I ran down to a local store to try one out. Both of the ones in the stores had lousy test prints. I then used a picture and did a copy. Even copying black and white. The prints are soo grainy. It looks like it reverted back to 300 dpi prints. I don't see how the machine could be advertised as high resolution machine? Perhaps it is just a software mistake? Anyway I returned to the office and I found several others on the net had similar problems. So I would stay away until brother resolves this problem. ... Read more

Don't be fooled
The machine itself it great. Easy to use etc. But it's the dudes who programmed the "artificial intelligence" in this thing that really messed it up and has me pissed off.

If one of the cartridges goes out, YOU CAN'T DO ANYTHING! Supposedly the fax doesn't even work. Huh? This is an obvious attempt that they just want you to buy buy buy more cartridges than you need.

I only use the black. I have never touched the colors. But for some reason, the colors run out before the black. What the...? And now they want me to replace everything before the machine will be usable again. I looked at the colors, and it clearly still has A LOT of ink or whatever inside. And there isn't a way to fool the machine by just taking it out and putting it back in.

I'm really thinking about just filling it with toilet water to let the machine think there's something inside. Don't know if it'll work. But here's the bottom line. I ran through the whole set (or the machine thinks I did) of ink in 4 months. So here's what you need to know. It costs about $80 or so to replace the set. So do you really want to pay $240 a year just to use the fax machine? If you actually do some printing, think $400+. This is lame. Fellow users. Anyone have suggestions please help us all.

You get what you pay for
This thing looks great, but I have had two major problems

1) The printer will not print if it thinks one of the ink cartridges is empty, which happens often when they are not empty: it has happened to me with nearly new cartridges. It essentially renders the device useless. Anyone know how to work around this? Please post a review if you do.

2) The paper feeder does not pick up paper unless I manually hold my finger against the tension arm. Clearly inconvenient, especially if you want to receive faxes.

Beware
Seems like a great buy, but the unit shuts down when it 'thinks' the ink cartridges are empty. I'm replacing FULL cartridges after only about 50 B/W pages. I'll try replacing one time, but if this continues, I'll have to replace the unit. NOTE there is no manual override, the printer will NOT work if it thinks a cartridge is empty. My cost? 50 pages for $20 of ink, 40 cents a page. Use Kinkos, it's cheaper.

Excellent fax, Acceptable color printer-copier, Great price
Amazon's service was very good. The box arrived well ahead of the estimated date.

You can't beat the price tag ... with 5-in-1 capabilities. While this is not a photo-quality printer, it is great for office use. At this price, it offers 4 separate inkwells that can be purchased separately based on your level of usage -- not offered by the competition. Please note that the Amazon product description which says that the product includes a handset is incorrect.

The unit is a breeze to set up as copier, printer, outgoing fax, scanner and PC Fax (set aside 30mins, max). However, setting this up for incoming faxes when you have an answering machine on the same line is very difficult because it is not completely documented (Solution: Set TAD, and set number of rings for receive to 1. Also, don't have any filters installed on the answering machine outlet and fax outlet). While the hold time when I called Brother Customer Service was more than 45 mins, once I got thru, they were able to resolve this issue thoroughly and courteously.

Overall, I am very happy with the purchase!

Disappointed
Based on all the reviews I purchased the MFC3100C model about 10 months ago to replace a HP printer I had used for 3 years. I use it lightly for home use and have not even had to replace any of the print cartridges yet. The outbound fax portion and scanner still work great but, unfortunately it will not feed paper in from the rear sheet feeder any longer. I am very disappointed in the quality of this printer. I think I will hook the HP back up and start looking for a new all in one not from Brother. ... Read more

Amazing product for the price
For the money I could not find another MF device that even came close to this unit.

Printing, Fax, Scanning, and copying are all as expected with output quality on par with other units in the $150-$400 range. However, it is its advanced functions that really make it shine.

First, the MFC has a built in 10/100baseT server. Not just a print server but a server that will support both local network and internet based printing, faxing, and even FTP access to memory cards. Want to share your digital photos; just put your CF, SD, etc. card in the printer and have your friends FTP in and copy the files. Or, use a memory card to store other files that you want to make accessable via FTP.

You can also do a lot of other interesting things like auto-forward faxes, store and forward on demand, broadcast, and so on. In all cases a Fax can be sent via normal phone line or via email depending on the 'address' you enter.

One very cool feature if you have broadband is that by opening port 515 on your home router/firewall you can print to the Brother MFC from anyplace you have internet access. Print from a hotel, airport, friends house, work (as long as port 515 is not blocked), etc. Very cool.

Also, the 20 sheet ADF is great for making copies or faxing larger documents while the flat bed scanner allows copy/fax of bound books, etc.

One the down side:
- The unit is not small; allow enough space for it
- The paper tray only holds ~100 sheets; a common issue with consumer printers
- Memory is limited at 16MB; don't expect to store tons of complex documents
- Color faxing ONLY works if you print the Fax when it arrives; you can't store a color fax and print it later or forward it to another Fax
- You have to install all 4 ink carts. for the printer to work and if one cart. is out of ink the printer stops printing; e.g. if your Yellow is out and you want to print a B&W fax you are out of luck
- Unlike HP units, the Bother has fixed print heads so if you have a failure you can't just replace the cart.; your have to replace the printer
- You can't change the IP Ports that the printer uses for its various network functions; e.g. FTP is fixed at 21, printing is fixed at 515. It would have been nice for security reasons to be able to change these to a user-defined value.

All in all this is a great all-in-one unit that has some great features that no other unit it its class has. For the price you can't go wrong!

GREAT PRICE BUT IN THE END DISAPPOINTING
We have had this multi-function for 4 months now.

PROS

A ton of functions.
Superfast faxing.
Great price.
Network ready.

CONS

Ink cartridges don't last very long.
No way to replace printheads, so if the printheads go so does the entire machine.
Print quality is subpar, I have a 6 year old HP that still prints better quality prints than this machine and just as quick.
When it prints out Black, it is graining and gray.
Printouts for pictures are still grainy and not as sharp as my 6 year old HP.
Only a 100 sheet tray.

Overall it is a good fax machine and decent sheet-fed scanner, but I would use it to print anything or copy because it eats ink like no tommorrow and the print quality and speed is not up to par with other machines you can get for the same price.

Best consumer scanner I've seen
The MFC-3820CN is not without its flaws; the thing could be greatly improved by the inclusion of an embedded web server to ease configuration, and its network scanning and printing capabilities are also unnecessarily difficult to use.

That said, as a scanner for archiving documents, this thing is the best I've seen. The document feeder is faster than the ones on much more expensive home- and small-office scanners from the likes of HP, and I have not yet been able to jam the thing. Using the 'fax' function but entering an e-mail address instead of a phone number, I'm able to dump bank statements, invoices, contracts and so forth into the document feeder and have TIFF or PDF versions of the documents show up in my e-mail inbox. So for archiving documents, I've got no drivers and no programs to worry about on my computer: as long as the network and the e-mail server are working, so is the scanner.

There's still room for improvement with network scanning and printing, but to me the ability to e-mail documents directly from the thing has proved to be well worth the price.

This printer sucks!
I have never been so disappointed with a piece of electronics. This printer will make you pull your hair out. It will mangle your originals, spill ink all over your printouts, and take an eternity to install, all while costing a fortune to keep in ink. The PC faxing software is soewhere in the same genre as the Atari 2600. Do not buy this printer.

Great Value
After suffering for years with a HP T45, then discovering that it simply would not work after installing Windows XP SP1 - I decided it was time for a change. "A Change" meaning - "anything but HP". If you're sceptical, read some Amazon reviews for HP Printers.
This Brother machine is designed for general business/home office use. So, the print/scan quality is not quite as impressive as more expensive units, but is perfectly adequate for general use. I actually use Draft mode for everyday printing anyway. If you want to print photos and glossy brochures, go buy a dedicated printer.

Control panel: simple to use, all buttons are clearly marked.
Computer Drivers: The software took about 5-10min to install, and was virtually painless. Software is roughly 45-100mb (as opposed to HP's 1.5GB). Software interface is pretty basic, but it provides access to all printer settings (and there's quite a lot).
Build Quality: Very good. I love the sheet feeder. Cartridges are extremely easy to change. Printing is reasonably quiet and fast - as is scanning. Was packaged well & came with simple installation instructions. The unit is considerably smaller than our old HP T45 (which did not have a flatbed scanner).
Network Capability: The network function was simple to get up and running (we connected the printer directly to our Netgear router), and it allows you to print, scan, fax or receive faxes directly to/from networked computers. All these features have worked with no problem.
Ink: Cartridges are inexpensive, but have no print head. Each colour cartridge is seperate.

We did a lot of research and were undecided between this printer or the Canon MP730. As we already have a specialist photo printer, and didn't want to spend too much, we purchased the Brother for it's network capability - and am extremely happy with it.
