Amazon.com Product Description

Philips' compact 20PF8946 TFT LCD television brings you 20 diagonal inches of high-quality image and silver Euro style. Perfect for use just about anywhere--living rooms, dens, offices, bedrooms, kitchens, dorms, you name it--the TV offers a standard 4:3 aspect ratio (suited to full-screen viewing of most television broadcasts), high brightness (450 cd/m2), and high contrast (500:1), as well as an integrated TV tuner for off-air reception of all your favorite programs.

This is an EDTV display, which means it's a step closer to high-definition or HDTV than standard TVs. When used with a progressive-scan DVD player (or 480p-output DTV set-top box) you'll get seamless, razor-sharp images from your favorite movies and concert videos.

LCD technology allows screens to be thinner and televisions to be lighter and more energy-efficient than ever before. The result is television that not only fits on a wall, but fits in places conventional televisions cannot. The 20PF8946's comes outfitted with Digital Crystal Clear III technology, a suite of picture innovations including Dynamic Contrast, green/blue stretch, and a 3D digital comb filter. The comb filter removes blurred edges between colors and reduces dot crawl (tiny, moving dots of color along a sharp color separation in a vertical line, as in a depiction of a character's striped T-shirt).

A feature called Active Control continually adjusts picture settings at over 60 times per second for all inputs, correcting both sharpness and noise reduction. Auto Picture lets you change--at the touch of a button--the picture settings (color, tint, contrast, etc.) for various types of programming, including sports, movies, multimedia (games), or weak signals.

Auto Sound allows you to select from 3 factory-set controls and a personal control that you set according to your preferences. Use the factory-set controls (voice, music, and theater) to enhance appropriate programs. Virtual Dolby surround simulates enveloping surround sound from any 2 speakers.

The set's 2 stereo speakers flank the screen, offering improved audio balance over earlier-generation Philips speakers, as well as patented technology using a hi-fi-like magnet system and unique speaker cones.

Inputs include 1 component-video (YPbPr/progressive-scan), 2 S-video, and 3 composite-video connections. Side-panel AV inputs accommodate a camcorder, gaming device, or VCR hookup, and a headphone output (minijack .125-inch) lets you listen in private.

2-0 out of 5 stars Stay AWAY
First of all..this is a VERY beautiful product! It would have definetely gotten 5 stars!! In my opinion it is well above par (par being the famous iPod)I beleive this product COULD have been a huge contender to the ipod...BUT Philips ***ked up BIG time and decided to includ crappy software (DMM) that is probably the worst programming weve ever seen. Basic features of ANY current media program seem to be missing from this software. Its almost a guarantee that the software will freeze or crash at some point. (Beleive me, I tried it on no less than 4 totally different computers). It honestly seems like Philips spent all there R&D and Production money on the actual physical device and only had enough money left over to pay some high school student to build a software program in a couple days. If you DO happed to buy this device, my best advice would be to run the DMM software, copy as much music as u can as fast as u can and then get the HELL out of there!! I can't beleive a company this big would do something so stupid. Or maybe it IS beleivable cuz it seems that the bigger the company gets, the less and less the company cares about its customers...us. On that note, customer support was also very bad. Dont even try to send an email to them. As far as the physical device goes, it works pretty well. The volume is wayyyy to low, though. Anyway, i have this device and i am stuck with it. At least it looks good as it sits on my desk, unable to be used! One last peice of good news is that there are a couple different websites right now who are working on programing totally NEW software to replace the philips DMM software for GOOD!! Who knows, maybe all the Returns philips gets and all the negative feedback will get them to change, or hopefully get someone fired! STAY AWAY FROM THIS DEVICE UNTIL PHILIPS WISENS UP AND TOTALLY !!!!REPLACES!!!! (NOT UPGRADES) ITS CURRENT SOFTWARE!

3-0 out of 5 stars Was to be my greatest toy ever...
...until my computer needed to be repaired and I now have windows XP Pro on it. Does the DMM software work now?Fuggehdaboudit!!!
Also a slight power surge in the house, wiped out all my tracks - so what do have to replace those track with - NOTHIN, the application will not open!!! I am heartbroken, because this was a pretty cool device. I really bought it because of the direct recording of analog sources! YAAY - a way to preserve my wax tracks, but ...alas. I have to do some research on more mp3 players righ now. Thank goodness I had a replacement plan where I purchased it! Too bad Philips.

3-0 out of 5 stars Glitches
I mulled over a jukebox for a while and finally settled on this. The product is greatlooking, but the software belongs to a former decade. It does have a major downturn which no one has mentioned it is not skip resistant, so if you jog forget it. Overall looks great, but needs serious improvement on many of its features. And there is a way to upload to your computer all your playable songs, but I can't tell because I respect copyright. JAJAJA. It is pretty easy though, just think....

5-0 out of 5 stars Best One Yet
I thought the Phillips kicked @#! over the other models I have owned and encountered, granted the DMM software takes a littlle bit to get used to once you have it your set. I have had no problem downloading music and the style of this mp3 player is great.

1-0 out of 5 stars What a beatiful piece of Junk!!
I got this unit today from Amazon.com. Connected to the computer with USB 2,0 WinXP Pro. Unit not recognized by computer, then software, the Digital Music Manager fails to read my existing MP3 Library (Application encountered problems needs to close message), 30 minutes later unit is back into box with printed UPS Label from Amazon.com (Terrific Service, by the way) to be shipped back next day for a REFUND. The unit, I have to agree, is the best looking MP3 Player (wants to be) I've seen. You make your own conclusions!! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars One Heck of a Deal
I bought this card to replace a Soundblaster 16 PCI. Having a VIA chipset in my computer, I was concerned about upgrading to any of Creative's cards, because of their infamous problems, so I picked this as a cost effective upgrade. Installation could not have been easier, and sound that it outputs is incredible, it is as good as any of the audigy cards that I have heard. 5-0 out of 5 stars Great CD-RW Recommended... READ THE BOX
I use thie drive with Win 98SE on a Compaq Presario Laptop. I chose this drive b/c of its USB connectivity. I got it dirt cheap and have only been impressed with it and the included software, Adaptec. I would HIGHLY RECOMMEND THIS PRODUCT. If you read the box it says its not compatible with windows ME and it is compatible with Windows 95 assuming you have a USB port and the port is supplied with drivers. The earlier version of win 95 did not support USB, later on it did. Check your stuff.. Its a great bargain and looks sharp. A++++

2-0 out of 5 stars not so good, get a more expensive one!!
First, be sure you'll get the software (worth over $60) and the driver (hard to find the correct one). it was very hard to find and to install this machine to my win98. If you get errors with your software, try CDR Tools Front End (free and good) with 31MB fifo, DAO mode, burnproof. It is hardly compatible with win98 (you'll experience problems) but it works for cheap product standards. If you have money, go get a better one. And another note, Philips does not provide assistance with this product unless you pay them $19.95!!!!!!!!! i gave a 2 because it is working (for now. I probably won't restart my win98 ever again :) )

1-0 out of 5 stars I thought it was me!
Over and over I've tried to get this to work. With absolutely no luck. I wish I would have read these reviews before my purchase! It would have saved me cash and grief. Why I keep trying to get my laptop to connect with the drive is beyond me!

1-0 out of 5 stars Waste of Money....
This product has given me more grief that I could ever imagine. Installing the product is pretty easy, and it is recognized in "My Computer". But getting the software packages to recognize the CD recorder is the major problem. I have bought 3 different CD recording software packages, downloaded all the software updates which are 'supposed' to deal with the recognition problem, and the software still does not recognize the CD recorder. So, the bottom line is, a very useless product! VERY useless indeed.
But looking on the bright side, if you want a second CD-ROM to add to the one you already have, it works great!

2-0 out of 5 stars Worked great for a while....
I got this burner because I was looking for something inexpensive. I used it with my IBM iSeries ThinkPad. It took me forever to install and setup, but once I got it going it worked awesome for oh about a month and a half... All of a sudden it stopped working, crashes my computer all the time. Piece of garbage... Tech support is useless. I guess you get what you pay for. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Outstanding Unit
I had it up and running on a WIN98SE 1ghz machine in about 10 minutes. Not a single problem. I've burned about 50 or 60 CDs so far and not a single coaster among them, most of which were done at 40X. Keep in mind folks that if you buy CHEAP Discs, you get CHEAP results. I've burned at slower speeds on CD-RWs and no problem with them either. I prefer Easy CD Creator 5 which does not support this drive, so I use NERO. Thats just my preference for software however and I guess I can get used to NERO.
Strictly speaking about the Philips I don't see how you can beat it. 700MB CD in under three minutes (Music, Data, MP3 it doesn't matter)

2-0 out of 5 stars Tough to set up
It writes music perfectly, but for some reason I haven't been able to get it to write any sort of executeable file without the file being unreadable.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best CDRW drive on the market (and affordable)
My previous CDRW (pacific xxxx) have about 20% fail rate

I was about to buy the Sony 40x12x48 one while I saw this Philips
one with the same price
So I think, well, Philips is the inventor of the CD, they must make good product in this field.
It has 4mb buffer (Sony has 2mb)

It burns fast (burn one CD in < 3 minutes)
Fail proof (even you accidentaly eject the source CD ...)
seemless: For some music CD doesn't have "gap" between tracks
like broadway musicals, this is perfect

Never burn a bad CD, yet (I tried 22 CDs)
Runs not as hot as my previous drive

5 star recommended !! ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Geat sound and features \ Bad drivers
I bought this card a year ago because I had problems with my SB live not working with microsoft game voice, which was required by my former Mechwarrior 4 gaming clan. It did everything I needed: 3D sound, on-line chat and a joy stick port. Then a month later I converted to XP Home and all hell broke loose. I tried the Win 2000 driver and it registered as "device is working normally" but did not. I then tried the PSC705 windows XP driver and got wave sound but no mic or joysick. I had to go back to my SB live which is almost dead. I recommend getting the SB audogy. All the others especially C-Media are incomplete and inadequete.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great sound quality with no WinXP support
This sound card is working great in my AMD XP based system. I did not want to buy SB Live! because of incompatibility issues of this sound card with VIA chipset. SB Live! apparently changes PCI bus timing which causes issues with VIA chipset. So Creative is to be blammed for it. Sound card from Philips works on the other hand great with any hardware. It stinks that Philips does not want to write Windows XP drivers for this card but they are not the only ones. It is part of lifecycle in computer industry that some hardware becomes obsolete even though it is still functioning. It happened to my 200$ sound card. Company has been bought by Creative Labs and I have no drivers either for Win98 and up. Everybody knows that either Philips or Turtle Beach Santa Cruz sound cards are least troublesome sound cards on the market now. This card has lower level of distortions than SB Live!. Sound quality is really good and noise level is very low. Another great option is TB Santa Cruz.

1-0 out of 5 stars No XP, ever
I bought a PSC702 card less than a year ago, new. Now I've upgraded my PC to XP and the Philips company line they'll never write XP drivers for the card, "because they no longer manufacture it". It seems the company has a lot to learn about the PC business. Don't buy anything from Philips unless you plan to stick to the same OS forewer. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent sound/quality/value
I was an engineer in the music recording industry for many
years. I've been called pickey. I have this system driving a
pair of JBL 4311s in my bedroom. Excellent system. The MZ-7
speakers are good and being used as delayed rear speakers in my
main living room system. The surround sound effect
is "interesting".
I would agree with another one of the reviews ... if you can find one at a reasonable price, don't hesitate to buy it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great System
I own this system and it is really incredible. All my friends comment on how the sound it produces is suprisingly loud for such a small system. It is also able to play more delicate music. I think the wood speaker cabinents add a lot to the quality of the sound, you don't see a lot of Hi-Fi shelf systems with quality wood speakers. These babys are hard to find so if you see one, pick it up, it will definetely be worth it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent sound and value
You don't see many of these for sale used because it's a rare piece of quality in the shelf system world at a very reasonable price. Excellent bass sound - even at low volume. Good "oomph" with little distortion. "Incredible Surround" really is pretty incredible (though it can put vocals too far in background at times). I have my unit connected to my TV/VCR and although it doesn't have "true" surround, the sound is excellent and movies are much more enjoyable! Speakers are solid (and heavy) and the whole system is easy on the eyes. I've seen some of Philips' recent versions of this (i.e. the mc-50) and it seems quality has declined. If you can find one - grab it!

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Sound - And plays CD-R's
When the box came, my husband wasn't home yet, and I attempted to set it up myself. I was so easy! It took no more than 20-30 minutes and was very self explainatory. The sound is great from such a small unit. Granted you cant act as though you are a club DJ or anything, but other than that it is awsome. The only draw back (if you can call this a draw back) is that the backlighting Dimmer on it only works when the player is in play mode. If you are putting the system in your family room and are going to use the clock, the illumination of it is real poor, and I haven't found a way to brighten it. The HUGE plus is that it plays CD-RW's. It was so hard for us to find one that would, and this one will with the added bonus of great sound!

5-0 out of 5 stars Product of the Year award 2000
This system got Hi Fi magazine mini/micro system product of the year award in 2000.

Note it has a 3 CD changed, a dual tape deck, and 50 watts RMS per channel.

Clean simple lines, and apparently a great sound.

Note also it is bigger than you would expect - it is NOT a micro system, but a mini.

When I get one I will write another review. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Beats All Sound Cards
I bought this sound card 3 months back when I built my own PC (Pentium III 1GHz 256 Crucial Memory , ASUS i815EP Black Pearl Special Edition Motherboard , Visiontek GeForce2 Ultra 64MB Video Card , Creative 12X DVD Drive , Creative 121032 CD-RW ,LG 915FT Plus 19" Inch monitor.

The installation was pretty easy , the instruction manual was easy to understand and clear.I connected S4Midiland 8200 Dolbydigital 5.1 Speakers to the SPDIF Digital Output .I started to test this setup by playing some MP3's , and I was knocked off to see the quality of the Sound , it was Rich and clear with very good Treble And Bass , next I played some DVD's (Matrix) and it was unbelieveble .It was true 5.1 Dolby Sound.

But there are some issues with this sound card , especially the Drivers , Philips has updated the Drivers for Windows (95,98,2000)... it has serious stability issues with windows 2000 , I had many crashes in windows 2000 with this soundcard , so I went back to windows 98 SE and it is no problem now not even a single crash or Blue Screen.

Overall I will recommend this soundcard for anybody who wants true Dolby 5.1 Surround sound and plays lot of games , but be careful to use it in Windows 98 only.

Creative I am a big fan of your's but I think you lost the "RACE".

Good Job Philips , But please Revise your Windows 2000 Drivers.

4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent card for games, if u can find 5.1 analog spkrs
First off, I doubt digital speakers work in games(haven't tried them but not taking any chances) I did rig up a kind of 5.1 analog(actually 5.2 analog) with a 4.1 and a cheap 2.1 set hooked cumbresomly around. worked great in Baldur's gate II ToB, before I could hardly hear dialog, especially my own voice files. You must have that center channel for voices to come in clear.(that goes for any system even Creative and Maxi Theater XP which does not allow 5.1 in games) in 2 or 4.1 setup, ambience and music drown the speech out. In DVD it's worse(I'm speaking in all sound cards and any thing asscociated with sound TV's, ect.) If you get this card, RUSH RUSH to get that 5.1 analog sound card before it goes out of circulation like so many good things. The MMS206 is you best shot as it is from Phillips. I cannot find this on any site, it is back orderd on this site. HOPEFULLY it will be in stock again this lifetime.

Another issue is the static with some sounds(Win 98 SE start up) but who cares about that?! Yamaha's SXG player will do this to but I think that is my speakers more than the souund card.

1-0 out of 5 stars Constantly crash while playing games with WinXP
This card constantly causes my Dell 8300,2.8Ghz to crash while playing games (Max Payne 1&2). Downloaded and installed latest driver (version 1.89) still does not help! Other than that the card is OK for other things. I would appreciate if someone come up with fix for this! Thanks.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent product
I never knew music from the computer could sound so good. I'm running WinXP with a brand name computer that has onboard sound. After installing the card, the onboard sound was automatically switched off. The 706 is very well made, looks solid and is actually thicker than a $$$ video card. You can tell just by the looks of it, it sounds exceptional.
I've installed the standard drivers for WinXP off Philips' website and was up and running in no time. It took a while to reach the optimum, I hope, settings from the included utility and... wow! I'm amazed! I have the same 2.1 studio speakers in another room running a similar system but with another brand sound card that costs twice the money I've paid for the Philips and it doesn't sound as good. The 706 produces more true to life sounds, cleaner sounds. Very impressed with this product.

1-0 out of 5 stars Have a strong dislike for this card
I really wanted to like this card..
And to be honest, it does very well in games (under win98)..

But midi sounds horrible, and Philips refuses to not only not produce Linux drivers, but not release source for linux coders to produce drivers... So in Linux you have no sound.. period!

I wish I had gotten the Hercules sound card that was my other choice... Sucks hearing from a friend who didn't make my mistake telling me how great the hercules card is under windows AND Linux and wishing I went the other way when they herc and Philips were my top two choices. ... Read more

I purchased this sound card while still using Windows 98. I wanted a basic audio card for music and DVD, no gaming or anything fancy and definitely nothing expensive. The price was good and in 98 it wasn't too bad of a card but I wouldn't buy it again. Installing was challenging enough in 98 but impossible in XP as none of the drivers are approved by XP. Now, in XP I am receiving gurgling noises and am planning on buying something else. So much for trying to save money!

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Unit!
This is my first CD-RW. It isn't the fastest but I was looking for a value. I had it up and running on the first boot. I used the included Adaptec Easy CD Creator software and had my first music CD completed within an hour of opening the box. It burned 12 tracks in about 15 minutes. The only minor glitch was the included installation CD failed to load. I don't know what is on it because I didn't need to use it. All in all I am extremely happy with it and can recommend it highly.

5-0 out of 5 stars A really cool burner
I highly recommend this cdrw. Very simple and easy installation. The included software shows you step by step on how to do the installation if you are new to cd-rom installation. I'm really good though. Anyway, Definitely, if you are looking for a new cdrw drive, check this one out. Oh yeah, It's great because its compatible with most cd-r disks other than faster drives that you have to slow down.

1-0 out of 5 stars never buy it if you do not want to waste your money and time
not even an one star product - a third class product from a first class company(!). It worked initially in Windows 98SE. But once I tried XP - problem started - the customer service seems to be from North Pole - worthless and rude. After weeks hardwork - it suddenly started working again before gone dead for ever (within one and half years of slow bad performance).

1-0 out of 5 stars Burner works OK and DIES after 2 years
This burner was my first burner and it worked fine for the few times that I used it. I was unable to get it to interact with the existing CDROM drive in ny computer though. Sometimes it didn't like to burn onto CDR media and I don't know why. Now, after about 2 years, it had DIED. Right now it is detected by windows 98, showing up in Device Manager and a drive letter does appear in Windows Explorer. The strange thing is that I cannot get the stupid thing to recognize a disk, either normal CD or anything. The activity light constantly blinks and it does not read the disks and when a disk has been placed the drive DOES NOT OPEN up again. You cannot get it to open to retrieve the disk until the computer is rebooted.

I do NOT recommend this drive unless you want to buy a new drive every two years. and the $70+ price i saw on this website is pathetic and highway robbery.

Thanks.

2-0 out of 5 stars Best used as recycle waste!
Well, It worked "OK" for about a year. All of the sudden it stopped working after the warranty was completed. Did not work well with virus software installed and never create CD-ROMs at the max speed. Overheated and crash the computer several times before it completely died. Buy something else!!!!!! ... 5-0 out of 5 stars If you see this on eBay, buy it!
I did. Then I read another review that here that talked about its limited remote control functions, and I got worried. Fortunatly, the reviewer was way off base. The neck strap remote is unique and has volume control, skip, and scan modes. The unit does remember the last song played as well. There is a minimum amount of wires to fuss with because the ear phones are plugged into the top of the neck strap. I'm really happy with this MP3 player.

5-0 out of 5 stars Get this for ease of use and style
Ease of use is best to describe the player. It has a drag and drop interface so there is no need to use a program to transfer music. There is no copy protection on the player so music can be copied to another computer with ease. The remote on the player controls play/pause, skip to forward, skip backward, volume up and volume down. The player resumes playback at the start of the last song played. As for the controls on the player, it's simple as there is one switch. The off/charge position and the playback.download position. I never worry about batteries as I leave it charging in the USB port and when I flip the switch it shows up as a removable storage device. It comes with an external AAA battery pack the provides 10 hours of music and when attached looks like it was built as one and not an attachment. I don't mind the omission of the lcd screen on the player because it really is liberating to not worry about renaming songs. I use this player for the gym over my ipod as it is so much lighter and I put my top 25-30 songs on it and don't worry about changing artists, albums, etc. The sound from the player is amazing. It doesn't have an equalizer and it still sounds better than my 3rd gen 20gb ipod and my old samsung yp-30sh (the key ring replaced this unit). I really was shocked by the sound quality. In terms of looks it is top notch. Everyone comments on how great it looks when they see it. Having said that I bought the KEY005 and not the KEY006 because I would never where one around my neck cause I think it looks stupid to do so. It is also rugged as I have dropped it on the treadmill and there were no chips or dents. In the office if I need to take a file home I just delete a track from the player and drag and drop the document. The only minus is there is no ability to scan through songs. I don't mind this anymore as I just turn on the player and forget about it. The only item I replaced was the headphones. Here is a link of the ones I got with a short cord and work perfectly for me: ..... In summary, I have owned this player for 3 weeks and this is the perfect player for the gym, office and short commutes.

5-0 out of 5 stars wow!
i got this mp3 player for my birthday and it rocks! i love it so much. and how cheap! i got it on sale! it doesnt skip ever or there is nothing ever rong with it. the only problem is that i dont like how there is no screen and all the controls are on the neck strap. but for the person that sayd it was really bad. its not. if its not playing, are you holding the play button down for 2 seconds? is it charged all the way? if your looking for a really good mp3 player at a really good price i recommend this one! trust me!

4-0 out of 5 stars cool gadget
I love the MP3 key. I gave it 4 stars because i had to fork out an additional $15 at best buy for a car adapter. I would also like a fast forward/reverse feature, but I knew there was not one.

5-0 out of 5 stars Aways good to go!
I have been using this unit for about two years now. I had the neck strap go on me after I accidently pulled on it while carrying it. Philips replaced it within a few days! The first thing that you need to know is that it is not a PDA or a Juke box. There is not display or fancy EQ features etc. It is however, a great unit for those who wish to keep a low profile while listening to MP3's or WMA's. The sound quality is excellent. This can be improved upon by using a higher grade headphone then the pair supplied with the unit. I use full over ear style when bike riding in the fall. As far as usage, it wins over other units hands down. By simply touching the right spot on my shirt, the unit allows me to control track selection, volume or start/stop features. I often wear it while shopping. I can set volume levels so that I am jamming, and still able to talk with store assistants. If you need alot of bells and whistles, skip this player. If you want portability, a very cool design, and ease of use, this is the game right here. Pro: light weight, easy to wear under clothing. Neck strap provides good control features. Easy to download from PC Cons: no expandability, but new units have 256 meg capacity. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Great Picture Quality.............BUT...
While it is true that the Philips PCVC740K ToUcam Pro webcam gives a great picture...even in low light... the Philips "VLOUNGE" software interface that comes bundled with it is horrible, Especially for capturing live video...the VRECORD application, previewed live video well...but when it came to recording, it would give me a USB bandwith error...even after I unplugged all other USB devices!!!! It also comes with some decent(but not exceptional) software applications including: Spotlife for live webcam use or creating live or still video on a website, (although its live video capture would let me record video, it gave me an error everytime I tried to record both video and audio together!) Reality Fusion's Gamecam software which lets you get inside games using your image to deflect balls etc, and a stripped down Ulead photo editor, PhotoExpress 2.0 LE.....

The camera itself, while delivering great image quality, in design is a bit awkward. Much lighter than Logitech Webcams, I found the oval shaped casing would often tip...and the tripod it comes with needs more weight on the back leg to keep it from slipping off the monitor (although it is probably perfect for laptop use). Still snapshots on this model can be taken by just saying CHEESE or by depressing the button on top of the camera. (Note: This webcam must be connected to computer via USB port to function...even for snapshots)

This camera is also suppose to deliver up to 60fps, that was one of the determining factors I had in choosing it over a Logitech or an Intel model...but that 60fps stat depends on your computer system and the number of USB devices...typically it still captures in the range of most other webcams...5-30fps BEWARE AMAZON CUSTOMERS: All of these Philips ToUcam models look similar!! If you buy/bought this webcam from Amazon, make sure it comes in a cardboard printed box (not on a plastic card like the lower end models) The ring around the lens of this Pro model is a yellow-orange color (The lower end model has a red/maroon color)............FYI

5-0 out of 5 stars Best webcam (almost) nobody's heard of
I picked one of these up on an auction site after reading reviews (all touting this as "The best webcam out there"), and after owning it for a few months, I'm convinced you can't find a better hardware webcam anywhere. The resolution (640x480) is terrific, the clarity and focus top-notch, and low-light sensitivity is among the best.

My previous favorite, Vista Imaging's "ViCam" was sold to 3COM (rebranded as the "HomeConnect"), then quitely dropped. The ViCam/HomeConnect may be a slightly better unit, but not being available I found the ToUCam and have been delighted. This is my fifth, perhaps sixth webcam, and I'll buy another one; there's really no comparison to the rest.

The unit is attractive and compact, with minimal controls (one actually, a shutter button). The supplied USB (1.1 only) cable is slim and lengthy, and once the drivers are installed, it's plug & play. (One niceity: The ToUCam ships with a "cute" egg-shapped zippered carrying case that is tiny, but excellent for packing the unit with you). One nit: Due to its design, the camera (made to mount in its own "leg" stand) tilts downward at an awkward angle. This won't prove much of an issue if you use the default stand (they are detachable), however if you mount the camera on some other device (in my case, the "TrackerPod"), you'll find the ToUCam points down at roughly a 30 degree angle. So beware, and ensure any stand you plan to use it on allows you to tilt the camera back up, or you'll be webcaming your desktop.

Now, I mentioned that this is a great *hardware* product, and that suggests the bundled software isn't the best, and that's true. The included package is robust -- webcam imaging software, video email, video-active games, and of course, the requisite drivers. While usable, they don't provide much more, and updates from Philips are spotty and confusing to acquire and install. If you have PC software already that you're happy with (e.g., webcam32, trackercam, etc) then by all means pick up the 740K ToUCam, you won't be disappointed. But don't rely solely on the software package provided by Philips. I only wish this product were more widely available in the US, but with avenues like Amazon.com and auction sites, finding one shouldn't be too painful, and your search will be worth it.

4-0 out of 5 stars Value for money
Good value for money. I plugged into my new XP machine, installed the required software and it works perfectly. Video mail option is not very effective. Inspite of several attempts, I get a very poor output. But the camera is really good and captures images at very low light. There are few add-on software that comes with the camera. Overall a good value for money, though one can expect a better results especially webcasting, and live streaming area.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Quality Picture
The Philips PCVC740K ToUcam Pro Internet WebCam gives great net webcam quality, sharp pix even in low light, focus is easy. The bundled software is not very good, but I use Adobe for still capture and windows movie maker for video capture. Easy installation. USB is great. Handy, stable, secure, FUN! Ya can't go wrong at this price.

2-0 out of 5 stars Think VERY carefully before buying....
I bought the ToUcam Pro and that was the mistake.

Things went pear-shaped shortly after that and the Belkin self-powered USB hub, which had been powering my Canoscan N650U scanner and Alcatel Speed Touch USB ADSL modem happily for over a year with no problems went off completely as a result of installing the ToUcam Pro! This happened maybe a dozen times at various intervals ranging from 1 to about 6 or 7 minutes.

Installation was annoying - I'm using Windows XP Pro and Philips claim the ToUcam Pro is XP-compatible. Maybe it is, but it most certainly is NOT out of the box; the cd will simply refuse to install as you'll be using the wrong version of Windows - the installer tells you this and you have to connect to the web to get an updater, which you install first! That's all well and good if you have Internet access of course, but there's NO warning of this until you actually start the install! Tut, tut Philips.

Having installed the thing I was impressed by the clarity of the pictures. They're better than the Logitech Quickcam Pro 3000 - brighter, more vivid and sharper. The focus seems to be sharper on the ToUcam Pro, but the focus ring is sloppy and loose, giving the device a cheapish feel. The lens appears stronger too, with objects appearing closer than with the Logitech.

The stand, whilst novel isn't practical, as unless you use the self-adhesive pad to fix it in one place the camera skids around. Philips seem to have gone for looks rather than practicalities. Blu-tak to the rescue!

Various problems ensued with the USB and hanging applications, so I decided after 4 hours of sheer hassle and dying USB that enough was enough and removed the camera and rolled the system back to a restore point before the ToUcam was installed. Things seem fine now.

Could a webcam driver cause me to lose a powered USB hub? Mmmm.....

It's left me with more questions than answers, but if you're using a Canoscan N650U and an Alcatel Speed Touch USB ADSL modem, I would steer WELL clear of the Philips ToUcam Pro webcam. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Quality LCD Monitor
The first 15" LCD Monitor I bought from Amazon was cheaper and not a name brand. After trying it for a week and never getting it adjusted to my satisfaction, they allowed me to return it and get a different one. I went with Philips because it was a trusted brand and I found out you get what you pay for! This monitor was easy to set up and once I got it hooked up it gave me an incredible display.
