Amazon.com Product Description

Discreet enough for the office or bedroom and powerful enough for serious music listening, Sharp's silver XL-HP700 3-CD executive microsystem lets you play CDs, audio cassettes, and dial in your favorite radio stations at the press of a button. Its fluorescent color display keeps track information and time of day in easy sight, and the system offers a built-in alarm clock with associated sleep timer, recording timer, and playback timer so you can fall asleep and wake to your favorite music.

The XL-HP700's hefty 100 watts per channel will make your CDs sound great in small to medium-sized rooms, when you're cranking them up and when you're playing them quietly; an overshadowed benefit of high power is that you get full sound, even at low volumes. You can listen straight through a disc, set the player to repeat, or set it to play random selections.

Load up to 3 CDs (including audio CD-R and audio CD-RW) at a time and listen to them continuously, in random mode, or one at a time--you can even swap out 2 of the discs while the third is playing. The system's 2-way speakers are magnetically shielded to allow distortion-free placement near TVs or computer monitors. Detachable grilles expose the speakers' generous 5.875-inch woofers, dome tweeters, and bass-enhancing ports.

The single-well cassette deck offers full-logic controls and auto-reverse playback for hands-free extended listening. The 30-preset FM/AM digital tuner automatically scans available stations for easy programming. Use the X-Bass circuit to boost the speakers' bass output, or choose from 5 preset equalizer curves to tailor the sound to your preference.

A dedicated subwoofer output facilitates hookup with an external (and optional) powered subwoofer to fill out your music's bass frequencies, while stereo RCA analog-audio inputs accommodate an external device like a DVD player, MP3 player, voice recorder, or VCR. Want to listen in private? Plug a pair of headphones (not included) into the unit's .125-inch headphone jack. This system is Energy Star-compliant, meeting all guidelines for energy efficiency.

1-0 out of 5 stars Slow and Clunky
This stereo has decent sound quality, but is a nightmare to try and operate. Maybe I just got a bad unit (I've returned it, anyway), yet even at those rare times when it did work properly, the loading and unloading process was veeerrrrryyyy long. I've worked with many different systems, and this was by far the most tedious. I suppose, for the money, it's about what one could expect. I'm not sold on Sharp, though. Save yourself from frequent boiling frustration and try another stereo.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Sound Quality
I purchased this for work, figuring that for the price if the sound quality wasn't great I'd still be happy. I've been pleasantly surprised to find that the quality of the sound is incredible....all types of music at all volumes. I've had issues in the past with systems that lose quality at low volumes, especially when listening to classical music. I have had no problem at all with this system. I plan to purchase another system for my home office. This is a great everyday unit. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Great little CD player, until ...
I LOVED this little CD player, but it broke after only 3 weeks. My CDs started to slip and skip as if there was a loose connection between the CD and player. After a few moments, the player would stop altogether. (It was a gift and couldn't be returned.)

5-0 out of 5 stars Impressive
Elegant-looking unit, with sound to match. The 2-way speakers deliver balanced and clean sound with surprising resolution for such a small system. If your taste in audio runs more toward the vulgar-sounding boomboxes currently cluttering the market, this product isn't for you. The sound here is as close to hi-fi as a unit this size will allow: silky highs, solid, not boomy bass that complements the sound but does not overwhelm it (as it should be). The addition of separate bass and treble controls (a somewhat rare commodity these days) is a very welcome plus, although the unit sounds excellent with most CDs when both controls are in the "flat" position. Just about every desirable feature is included, like aux inputs for connection of external equipment, optical output for an MD player, and a headphone jack. Every function and adjustment can be accessed from the well-designed remote control. The tuner has very good sensitivity and most stations come in clearly with the provided antenna. No unusual mechanical noises coming from the CD player have been noticed. Overall, a very impressive mini audio system, sure to please even finicky audiophiles like me. The unit's stylish, tasteful design is sure to please your eyes as well. Highly recommended.

4-0 out of 5 stars Nice addition to any room
I am by no means an electronic expert. In fact, I am reluctant to write a review because I have no technical knowledge to give you. What I CAN say is that this small stereo unit packs a pretty good punch for the money. We use it in our kitchen which isn't very big in size. The unit takes up very little space and the sound is great--crisp and clear. I must say that I do not have the problem of hearing the CD spinning. I would definately buy another of these if the need arises.

3-0 out of 5 stars Nice but noisy cd player
I just bought one of these and I haven't decided yet but I might be returning it because the cd player is noisy. When the cd spins up you hear it big time. I'm fairly close to the unit (3 feet) as it sits on my desk in my home office, so maybe if you put it much farther away it won't bother you.

For example, sitting in a chair 5 feet from the unit, with the volume set on 12 (not loud but not quiet either), I can hear the cd spinning over AC/DCs "Back in Black" song. Unreal. I've got a compact cd player that is quiet as a mouse.

Other than that it is really sweet so far - "Surround" sound is particularly impressive.

If you listen to cds with quiet passages this player might drive you nuts.

Radio is real good - I'm getting good reception in my house without attaching the FM antenna yet.

Speakers and unit use standard speaker wire attachment so you can put longer wire in than what is supplied.

I haven't tried the AUX input yet.

If it didn't have this noisy cd player it would be 5 stars.

HTH

5-0 out of 5 stars Nicely styled and sounds good
I needed a stereo to go in a small bedroom and this one works well. The styling attracted my attention (it looks like it cost a lot more than it actually does) and I like that the speakers match the unit instead of using the fake woodgrain that comes on most systems in this price range. The cd door is motorized and quiet and there is an internal blue light which along with the lcd display looks really nice at night.

I am not an audiophile but the sound is very good (I have a more expensive component system) and there is an auxiliary input for a subwoofer if you need more bass.

Great sound and price and very nice styling makes this executive system a winner in my opinion. ... Read more

Amazon.com Product Description

Offering CD, cassette, and radio listening from a single small but powerful system, Sharp's silver XL-HP500 compact stereo will look and sound great in the office, den, bedroom, or living room. Its fluorescent color display keeps track information and time of day in easy sight, and the system offers a built-in alarm clock with associated sleep timer, recording timer, and playback timer so you can fall asleep and wake to your favorite music.

The XL-HP500's hefty 50 watts per channel will make your CDs sound great in small to medium-sized rooms, when you're cranking them up and when you're playing them quietly; an overshadowed benefit of high power is that you get full sound, even at low volumes. You can listen straight through a disc, set the player to repeat, or set it to play random selections.

Load up to three CDs at a time and listen to them continuously, in random mode, or one at a time--you can even swap out two of the discs while the third is playing. The system's two-way speakers are magnetically shielded to allow distortion-free placement near TVs or computer monitors. Detachable grilles expose the speakers' generous 5.125-inch woofers, dome tweeters, and bass-enhancing ports.

The single-well cassette deck offers full-logic controls and autoreverse playback for hands-free extended listening. The 30-preset FM/AM digital tuner automatically scans available stations for easy programming. Use the X-Bass circuit to boost the speakers' bass output, or choose from among five preset equalizer curves to tailor the sound to your preference.

This system is Energy Star compliant, meeting all guidelines for energy efficiency.

4-0 out of 5 stars simply better then others
+++
To what I see on the market it is the best in its category. Everything can be controlled from the remote. ( some other models make you to come over to the unit to control the tape, start the recording, it a BIG minus and a BIG PLUS for XL-HP500) The sound is fine, well, try to use a better pair of speakers, and use the original in your garage :). You cannot expect good speakers within this price range.
---
Where is the mp3 play back mode? It is time to have it as a default option for all CD players with no extra charge. Well, this CD player was a gift for my grandma, so she does not know anything about mp3, so not a minus.

good, well thought out unit.

5-0 out of 5 stars For the size and price--it's a deal
I shopped around for a small bookshelf unit that sounded great and I found it with this set.

The sound is impressive for its size. Many units of this size don't produce a desirable sound.

I've had 2 other sets fail me with a broken cd player after a few years of use so I'm not a big fan of spending big dollars on a stereo system if that's the way they stand up today. The others I bought were more expensive than this player.

1-0 out of 5 stars Pass on this one
I bought this yesterday and wish I hadn't. It seemed decent enough in the store, but when I got it home and plugged it in, it sounded like the cassette player was going to explode. After testing it out this afternoon the cassette player was already dragging a tape.I brought this back to Best Buy pronto.

2-0 out of 5 stars Good looking shelf unit with weak sound, poor reliability.
I bought this item after comparing it to the Panasonic SC-PM18, as well as a few similarly priced units from Sony, all of which sounded roughly the same to my ears. First off, it looks very nice, and that's really what triggered my decision to buy it. Unfortunately, the sound quality from the CD player is roughly comparable to the sound quality I get from the cassette player in my car (I drive a Hyundai Elantra with a stock radio), and to make matters worse, the manual specifically forbids using metal or CrO2 tapes in the cassette recorder (meaning I can't make good CD dubs to play in my car). Even with headphones on, the sound is flat, with no real dynamics to it. The "X-Bass" bass booster offers only tepid reinforcement of ill defined low end sound, and the treble lacks any texture to it. All in all, I'd say that the headphone sound quality is inferior to that of my 12 year old Sony Discman. I don't know if this is a problem with the CD player, or a problem with the speakers. The equalizer, which is really just six presets, doesn't do much to color the sound one way or the other. I sound tested the unit with Miles Davis' "... Brew", a sonically complex and challenging recording. I am sad to say that most of the album was inaudible at lower volume levels, and even at higher levels, I had difficulty discerning between the various instrumental parts. I never considered buying one of the higher end shelf systems, mostly because they're so (...)ugly and take up way too much space. With 26 days left on my return guarantee, I'm seriously considering other systems at the moment.

UPDATE 11/24/03:
I returned this unit to Circuit City when the timer function stopped working (within 2 weeks of purchase). All in all, I'd characterize this unit as one of the better "executive shelf systems" I've tested. Basically, it (...), however so do most of the other units out there that are competing with it. The Sharp XL-HP500 is cheaper than most, and includes a pre-out for a powered subwoofer, which I've come to realize is almost unheard of in one of these mini-systems. Unfortuneately, when I convinced a Circuit City salesman to allow me to demo the unit with a powered subwoofer attached, it didn't sound significantly improved. Certainly not enough to justify spending an additional $100 on a powered subwoofer, bringing the grand total to somewhere in the neighborhood of $250. If you absolutely need must have a sound system with these specs (ie, small), then this is probably the best one to get in terms of price/value. If you have any other options available to you, I'd suggest attempting to assemble a rag-tag set up of mismatched, possibly used components. The additional $100-$200 you spend will hopefully return in the form of much better sound quality and the promise of future versatility/expandability.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great sound, great looks, great price
We bought this unit about a month ago and have been very pleased. We are huge music listeners but don't have the money right now for a full-blown component system. However, this unit provides all the sound we need. The features and sound are so great I see no need to spend $1000-plus on components anymore. It seems these smaller units are marketed for offices or bedrooms, but it honestly provides all the stereo we need for our house. It fills our living area and kitchen with rich, full, clear sound not even turned up halfway. I don't know why anyone would need it louder unless you wanted to hear it outside the house. Looks were important to us because we don't have an entertainment center and needed the unit to sit on a bookshelf in clear view without making our living room look like a college dorm. This is a very classy, clean looking system. I love the play exchange feature, which allows you to change the other CDs while one is playing. Doesn't seem like a big deal, but it would be an annoyance if you couldn't. Also, it moves from one CD to the next very quickly and quietly, unlike many of the others. Another important feature for us was the auxilary input for our TV or DVD player. We would have preferred 5-CD capacity, but have found 3 to be adequate. The display is uncomplicated and easy to use, as is the remote. A great value all around. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Super system for the money
I shopped a long time before settling on the Sharp XL-55. This unit is very simple to use, sounds better than most systems costing several times the price, and is smaller than most. The added benefit of the cassette deck for us old-timers is a big plus. The included speakers sound pretty good, but I'm gonna upgrade mine to a set of Bose. Reception is pretty good, not great.

Pros:

Simplicity of a single CD player
Cassette deck w/logic controls
Actual bass/treble controls, not preset EQ!!
Small enough to actually sit on a 12" shelf
Simple, logical remote control
Rotary volume control, not push-button

Cons:

Cassette deck's "Pause" button disabled in some modes
No "Scan" on the tuner, so switching to non-preset
stations is tedious.
External antenna connection doesn't accept rooftop
antenna wire

At $200, this would be a 4-star system, but for under $100, WOW! I am thoroughly pleased.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Sound, Loaded With Features, Good Value
The Sharp XL-55 is attractively styled, with aluminum fronts and woodgrain sides. All of the buttons on the front panel are well marked. You can figure out most functions without having to read the manual, except for setting the clock and resetting the unit if you get it wrong. The remote control provides full control of all functions, including recording on the tape deck and adjusting the tone controls. Think of the Sharp XL-55 as the little brother of the Sharp XLHP500, which is bigger and has a CD changer.

Setting up the XL-55 is easy except for hooking up the speaker wires. On any stereo, connecting speakers out of phase (+ to - and - to +) will result in a strange echo sound in stereo audio. To prevent connecting the speakers out of phase, many manufacturers color-code the speaker wires to match the proper connectors. On the Sharp, one wire on each speaker has a white stripe on it, but it is hard to see. You need to look closely to get the wires connected correctly.

Power output is 20w per channel, which is ample for a large room. Instead of preset equalization settings, you have individual control of bass and treble, which I prefer. A clock with alarm and sleep timer makes the XL-55 useful as a bedroom stereo.

Many bookshelf stereo systems are 14 to 16 inches deep, even though many shelves are only 12 inches deep. You should measure the actual unit before buying any bookshelf stereo because the published dimensions may not include a protrusion or cables that stick out of the back of the unit. Case in point -- the Sharp XL-55 is often listed as being 9.75 inches deep, but when you include the protrusion that sticks out of the back of the unit, it is actually 11.7 inches deep, but it still fits on a 12-inch shelf.

The XL-55 features AM, FM, Tape, CD and an AUX input for other sources like the audio of a DVD player or VCR. There is also a digital output from the CD player to interface with equipment that has a digital audio input. A line-level subwoofer output is provided, but you will need a powered subwoofer if you want the extra bass. That can cost more than you may want to spend if you don't already own one.

The included speakers have plenty of treble, but needed a bit of bass boost. I found the best sound was with the bass set at 2 and the treble at 0. You may be just fine with the sound of the original speakers, but if you have any unused stereo speakers lying around, try them to see if you like the sound better. The XL-55 is rated for 4 ohms, so do not connect extra speakers with the supplied 4-ohm speakers still in place. However, you could power two sets of 8-ohm speakers connected in parallel.

The AM/FM receiver worked as expected with easy digital tuning. You can store up to 30 stations in the preset memory. FM sensitivity with the wire antenna provided was fine. An external loop AM antenna can be moved around for the best reception.

The single-play CD player is on the top of the unit. It has all the usual features including track programming and skip forward/backward. It handles all types of CDs, including CD-R and CD-RW, without a problem.

The tape deck will record from the radio or CD. It is set for Type I (standard) tape. Type II (chrome) tape will work, but you won't get the best sound. The tape player has full logic control, meaning that it will stop at the end of fast forward or rewind and stop the deck if the tape jams. As expected in this price range, the tape deck does not have Dolby noise reduction.

After listening to and checking the features of the units from just about every manufacturer, I found the Sharp XL-55 to be the best executive bookshelf system for the money. ... Read more
