5-0 out of 5 stars Awesome
These things are awesome. Me and my friend wanted communication to his house because his dad didn't like him on the phone. So we bought these talkies and we have crystal clear communication 1 1/2 miles away. Buy these then are awesome.

5-0 out of 5 stars A great value for keeping you and yours together.
I bought these radios, because of the first factor I had: They were inexpensive. I wasn't expecting much for the money I invested, but I was most definately surprised at the quality and value I recieved. I took them to "A popular resort park in Orlando" and experienced my first problem: FRS is a heavily shared frequency, and it was very hard to communicate with my party. I did have fun talking to other guests, though. My next trip was to the mountains. Here, they proved invaluable. Noone else was apparently using FRS in the area when we were there, and it was excellent for confirming rendezvous times and places. The range is superb. Somewhat surprising. My voice, and the person I am talking to can easily be heard sometimes up to a mile away over hill, dale, and wadi. The features are easy to use. My 5 year old has no problem using it (no, he dosen't go out alone). The page feature is good to have, as well. The size of the unit makes it easy to slip into purse or pocket, or attach to a belt with the clip. It is a breeze to use, and great fun to have. I will never regret buying mine, and I don't think you will either.

4-0 out of 5 stars A nicely priced item that widens two-way communication.
I work at a university in California as a maintenance worker. My boss and I have to keep in touch in order to best meet the needs of our housing residents. Before we used the Cobra Micro Talk 1 we relied on our campus pager system. This was not an effective method since we had to find campus phones and wait until the other person responded to the page. With the Micro Talk 1 we are able to connect quickly and effectively. We can now communicate in seconds instead of minutes. The battery life is long because of the stand-bye feature, we have been able to use them for several weeks before the batteries run low. The only down side to the Micro Talk 1 is that we sometimes have to deal with other radio traffic because of the two-channel limitation.

5-0 out of 5 stars Good Radio for travel - as long as you stay within 1/2 mile
This radio worked very well within the 1/2 mile range with very clear communication. 1/2 mile to 1 mile was broken but understandable. The main problem with this radio is that one of the two channels are probably being used by someone else due to the unusually strong sales of these radios. We usually were able to switch channels and get uninterrupted communication. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars GMRS good or bad???
I like this radio.
Good points are
1. tough antena
2. came with nimh batteries
3. Good range through trees
4. earbud
5. very easy to open up the squelch and keep it open with having to keep pushing a buttion
Bad points are
1. Belt clip is easly broken
2.VOX dose not work with the earbud
3. When scanning the radio dose not show the sub coad of the radios it picks up.
4. can not connect a exturnal antena
5. No lanyard loop

If you get a deal on one of thease go for it. Other wize go for one of the new 2 watt mortorla radios. Or get a midland G11. I can't say I would buy them again but they are overall good radios.

4-0 out of 5 stars Cobra GMRS 900DX - Two Pack
After considering the uniden GMRS 480 and Audiovox 1535, I chose the Cobra GMRS 900-2-DX because of size, the layout of buttons, overall feel, two year warranty, and more price competative if you didn't want the charger etc.. All of the ones I considered appeared to be 2watt with similar specs. (althought the Audiovox may have been 1.8 watt). Both the Uniden and Audiovox did have NOAA but since my wife and I were going to use them mostly in mall shoppoing, weather would not be a problem. The Cobra could fit in my shirt pocket or wife's purse with no problem. The longer antenna in the uniden may not have been as convenient to carry although may get a little better range and audiovox's screen and buttons were smaller, which may have caused a problem with my bad eyesight. The Cobra range is around 1.3 to 2.0 miles, depending on terrain, obstacles etc., sound is adeqauate but high frequency lacking. Compared to FRS I can achieve 4 times the distance since I could only get 0.5 - 0.8 miles with a 0.5watt FRS radio. I don't think you will ever achieve 5 mile range or even 3 miles unless you are on top of a 5 mile mountain talking to someone on the ground. Overall I am pleased with the Cobra. The FCC license fee is a bit pricey at $.. but that's life.

4-0 out of 5 stars Nice machine, good range, good price
This is a nice machine. Lotsa features, I get pretty good reception. Bought mine at Farm & Fleet for 60 bucks a piece. Figuring that you can easily spend that on a 500mw radio, why get anything else. As previously written by another reviewer, the sound quality lacks but is still audible. It is missing the highs so it can be a little muffled. Would I buy it again? Yes.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best I've owned so far...
Shopping malls are noisy... yes. Casinos are much much worse guys. This Cobra was a very good help to myself and my friends who used to comb the casino searching for each other. I have no complaints at all. The earbud came with the kit and so did the batteries and charger. Very well worth the money.

4-0 out of 5 stars sound quality was fine for us
My brother-in-law has a set of these recently introduced GMRS radios from Cobra....our transmissions were fine...we thought we had better fidelity than some police radios we have heard. Range was pretty good inside a large mall; one of us in a basement store and the other at the far end (about 3/4 mile) on the second story...that is a lot of concrete and steel in between, but reception was clear, vioces easily understood - a bit of static now and then, but that is to be expected from all the lights and other things "in the way" between the 2 units. I imagine the range in the open would be considerably more than standard FRS radios...but again, the law of physics apply....an FRS radio with 500mw (1/2 watt) goes say 2 miles on a good day; this unit with 4 times the theoretical power will only double the range, on average (the inverse square rule). But really folks, how far apart are you going to be from each other most of the time? Usually a mile or less...here, the extra "juice" gets the signal thru buildings better...we have no complaints about this new addition to the Cobra family...a great bargain with NiMH batteries, in-unit charging plus the earbud mike...even with an FCC license it is a good deal. ... 1-0 out of 5 stars DON'T BUY IT
BECAUSE OF AN ILL FAMILY MEMBER, I MUST LEAVE THE 2-WAY RADIO ON ALL NIGHT. THE STATIC WAKES ME UP. ALSO, BATTERIES HAVE TO BE REPLACED TOO OFTEN. THE ON-OFF BUTTON IS DIFFICULT FOR SENIOR CITIZENS TO USE.

5-0 out of 5 stars Cobra 2 way radio ROCKS!
When I received these 2-way radio's I was very very pleased. First of all, I think that it is convenient that it comes with a belt holder so you don’t have to hold it all the time. Secondly, the 2-way radio has 14 clear channels, a green light that lights up the screen so you can see at night, and it has an incoming call feature.

The range I am very pleased with. I tested it with my brother and we got about 1 1/2 miles until the radio got a little static but I could still here him clearly. But it got static because he was deep in the woods, with all trees around. On clear land without any huge buildings around or any trees the 2 way radio can reach up to 2 miles.

They're very reliable for everyday use. Plus the batteries last a really long time.

These work very well in amusement parks, malls, sport complexes, between cars, etc.

They also include a speaker and headphone outlets on the top of the 2-way radio.

Overall I am very pleased with these radios.

5 stars!

2-0 out of 5 stars Very disappointed
I'm quite disappointed in the performance. We got these radios, opened them up, put in the batteries, and the first one worked perfectly, but.... the second of the two "static-free" had nothing but static until you keyed the talk button. We couldn't even leave it on because even on the #1 setting of volume, it was very loud and annoying! I certainly hope I can get this problem resolved with the company or I'm definately going to want my money back!

3-0 out of 5 stars Great for playing around with but not serious 2 way's
These cobras are a graet deal for the money but don't expect to use them for more than a mile in a city. The interference is bad after a mile. I thought that since eveything on them was digital they would be cool except the volume at the lowest setting is still loud enough to hear by someone one else. Finally don't plan on going anywhere where a lot of people will be using them cause there are no privacy codes and believe me I know now it is worth it to get them with the privacy codes. So overall they are great for the money with the rebate but if I were you i would splurge and go for the privacy codes.

4-0 out of 5 stars Not Bad AT All
I just got this 2 way radio yesterday. It was perfect after my brother went a couple blcks down and we were both outside. But, for some reason, when I am not standing next to a window, I can't hear a thing from anybody. Then fun part is that you can over hear other people's conversations and talk to them. It says 2 mile range but it is REALLY cut down because of New York's big buildings and trees, I haven't tried it out in cars, but I think it will work really well. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars These are good
I never thought Cobra would make a decent radio but they have with this one. A big advantage over Motorola is the superior voice clarity! A host of other goodies such as a compass and weather radio are useful extras. The selectable power settings on GMRS is good. The range is good, I don't think any of these radios give you 5 miles and the best radio in terms of range and clarity were the original Motorolas FRS Talkabouts of the late 90's. Unfortunately, they ate batteries. I recommend this model of Cobra.

5-0 out of 5 stars PR1100 WX COBRA 2 way radios GOOD RECEPTION
I researched GMRS radios for several weeks before recently purchasing the COBRA 1100 WX. I wanted a radio that would be useful in town and in the woods on runs and while hunting.

I selected the 1100WX for its claim of a 5 mile range and the NOAA alerts. I also had been advised that Cobra produced a reliable product. I found the manual very easy to read and quickly had the radios programmed for my use.

For several days I tried the radios on the way to work and back on the opposite side of town. I didn't have much luck after approximately 1.5 miles from home but this area is very hilly and there are industrial sites in town. This limited the range.

I tried them away from town. First on a 4 mile country run. At the 1/2 way point of 2 miles reception was difficult in the lowland but once I cleared the hill the reception was fine.

Next, I tried the reception at 5 miles to the parking lot at the state game lands. This was over very hilly terrain. The radios picked up a very clear signal. I ran up the mountain on the access road which is approximately 2 miles up to the top of the mountain. The signal was even better.

I would strongly recommend these radios for distances in town of l - 2 miles and outside of town from 2.5 - 5 miles. The voice activation option takes some getting used to, however, once programmed, they are simple enough for a 5 year old to use. ... Read more

Amazon.com Review

You'd be hard-pressed to find an FRS radio that packs as many features into such a compact and attractive package as Cobra's FRS115 Microtalk. In addition to having a multitude of advanced communications features, the Microtalk is the only radio in Cobra's line capable of picking up AM and FM signals. This allows you to listen to stereo broadcasts via headphones attached to the integrated headphone jack. Incoming FRS broadcasts temporarily disrupt the AM or FM reception, which, when we tested it, enabled us to listen to our favorite tunes and talk radio programs without missing an important transmission from a member of our group.

The product's design is as sensible as it is colorful, incorporating a flexible rubber antenna instead of hard plastic. The unit's many buttons are easily accessible yet difficult to push by accident, and there's a channel-lock feature that comes in handy when inquisitive kids (or clumsy friends) are entrusted with the radio.

A call button can be pushed to make other FRS radios tuned to your frequency "ring," alerting others in your party that you are about to make a transmission. There are independent buttons for adjusting the unit's volume and selecting channels, along with a microphone jack that can be used with a separately available headset to allow for hands-free operation.

The Microtalk did a great job in our tests, with a range comparable to that of other FRS units and decent audio quality from the built-in speaker. We ditched the included headphones, as their hard plastic design made them uncomfortable, and used a pair of compact earbuds instead. We expected AM and FM reception to be limited, but it was pulling in signals in a basement office that even standalone portable radios we've tested couldn't tune. A handy seek feature simplified tuning, and memory presets kept our favorite stations within easy reach.

If the included headphones were only better, this would be a near-perfect FRS radio. But even with that slight oversight, the Microtalk is a standout in a crowded market. --Tracy Baker

Pros:

  • Good range for picking up FRS transmissions
  • Great AM/FM radio reception

Cons:

  • Included headphones are uncomfortable

4-0 out of 5 stars Nice
I bought one of these mainly because of the built in radio to use at the gym and it of course also doubles as an frs radio. Only drawback is the lack of ctss codes and the roger beep cannot be turned off. Does have a call button. If these aren't a problem and you want a dual purpose radio, these are fine.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great
Used it up in the mountains (washakie wilderness) with lots of trees to interfer however that was not a problem, it had better then a two mile range, Once I was in the creek bottom and was able to talk to the others at camp a good 3 miles a way and the camp was surrounded by trees

1-0 out of 5 stars Not real good range
I have used both Motorolla and VTEC. And the COBORA had the worst range of all brands. Very staticy at even 100 yards.

5-0 out of 5 stars An RV Must!
We bought two of these mainly for our RV. I was always concerned about backing our motorhome and loosing sight of each other, or walking the dog in a campground after dark. These are great for us to keep in touch with each other all the time, but especially after dark. We use them for bicycling and hiking, our models have the built in AM & FM radio's which eliminates carrying additional items. Handy for just taking to the beach, lake or wherever. They are very clear, easy to operate, lightweight and simple to program. We have not totally tasked the range yet, but it has been sufficient for us. Anyone who is into camping needs the added comfort and security of these units, especially if they have children. Also have found them very handy at the Mall with our Grandkids, not only for their location but security, and they love using them. We shopped every brand and style, but found these Cobra's were the best buy for the buck, especially thru Amazon. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Used in Baghdad, Iraq
This is a great set of radios for the price to include the charging station. Great range and clarity. I haven't had to use them no more than one kilometer, but with all the buildings in my area, these are great. Really practical without all the extras.

Con--NO KEYPAD LOCK! I had to constantly check to see if I was on the right channel due to the equipment I carry hanging across my chest, but to stay alert is to stay alive so I adapted.

1-0 out of 5 stars Channel button qualifies as a manufacturing defect!
I bought a pair of FRS 104's for a recent trip to wine country and was quite disappointed. The channel button has NO LOCK, and is large and easy to bump (i.e. accidentally change). This flaw rendered the FRS 104 virtually unusable! You can't put this radio in your purse or pocket and still stay in touch. You can't even casually pick it up to carry on a conversation without the danger of inadvertant channel changes. I e-mailed Cobra about this, but was snubbed and told to take it up with my retailer. Fortunately Lowe's has a great exchange policy and I'm now the proud owner of 2 Motorola T6220's-for a mere 13 dollars more. I would NOT recommend this product to anyone. No way, No how. ...
