2-0 out of 5 stars channels easily changed....
For an FRS unit, it is not bad. My only problem with this unit is that you have no channel lock. If you accidentally bump the channel changer, you will not hear anyone trying to contact you.

5-0 out of 5 stars best Radios ever!
I bought these because I was splitting the package with one of my friends. when we tried them, since we don't use them at very far diatances, they worked great! where I live, there are a lot of buildings and trees, so for the distances we use them for, it is great! one of my other friends got the ones that has a charger and batteries for him and his brother, and the distance between us, they work with minimal to intermediate static, so they are fine. so, basically, they are the best to me. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars cobra pr2000 wx
I just recently purchased a pair of these radios and I have to say that these are the best that I've tried to date. I've tried the cobra 900 series gmrs , a few of the motorola radios, and have a set of audiovox frs radios. The pr2000 wx ... is great. The distance is the best I've seen. At least 3 times the average frs.I use them when riding my motorcycle with an after marked headset and the clarity is good. The best for your money. ...

4-0 out of 5 stars Better than FRS
In dealing with FRS (family radio services) radios, this has any of them beat hands down. I've owned four Motorola Talkabout FRS radios and found that in a high user environment there is too much interference from other users. I use these radios in a wet and cold environment where the temp. reaches the teens. These radio's perform with no variation of the signal. Yes they are battery dependent but in a 4 to 6 hour stint I've found that keeping them charged works fine. So keep the battery charged and you should get the range they advertise and get an ear piece so you don't have to have to volume on high...

1-0 out of 5 stars GMRS handhelds being sold as FRS radios
This Christmas season, I have noticed small
GMRS handhelds being sold as"family radios"
at mass-merchandise stores. Wal-Mart, Target, BJ's Wholesale
Club, Best Buy, and others are now selling these radios.

Audiovox started this trend with the GMRS-1525, and has now been joined by the
likes of Midland, Uniden, and others. Sold in blister packs, often in pairs.
They look, smell, and taste like FRS radios, but with a big difference:

On the packaging, much is made of "4-mile range" and "2 watts of power."
Little or no mention is made of the FCC license which is required to transmit
with these radios.

Apparently, these are becoming quite popular as the "next generation of family
radios." A quick check of GMRS frequencies on the scanner revealed lots of
children, call tones, and roger beeps. Just like the FRS frequencies.

What are your thoughts on the manner in which these radios are being marketed?

Legal?

Ethical?

4-0 out of 5 stars cobra pr2000
(...) Yes the radios do use gmrs and gmrs intersticial frequencys but the radio doesn't automatically switch power when you change from gmrs to frs. You have to do it manually. You can run 2watts on channels 1-7 or 8-15. Now some gmrs/frs radios do change the power output when changing between gmrs and frs but not the cobra gmrs radios. Channels 1-7 are frequencys that are called gmrs intersticial frequencys(frequencys that are shared with frs). These channels can be use by gmrs or frs users and the max power that can be used on these channels is 5watts(gmrs licenses only). This is because they are shared with the frs channel. The remaining 8 channels in the gmrs range can have more power used since it is used only by gmrs users. (...) You have to go into the fuction option to change from low to high power. Now as far as the range. The range you see on the package is line of sight range only(no obstructions). That means if one person is on one side of an open field that is five miles wide and the other is on the other side they can transmit 5miles apart. Now in real life where there is obsticals in the way like trees, buildings, and hills you should expect around 1 to 1.5 miles consistantly. Thats with any 2watt uhf radio. Now in some cases manufactures in order to keep costs down use cheap antennas, since these radios have a standard smt antenna mount on the radio you have the option of trying different smt uhf antennas. With a two way handheld radio the antenna is the biggest factor effecting the range. I'm not sure yet on how good the cobra antenna is but I'm going to do some testing to see. By its looks it doesn't look to efficiant.

4-0 out of 5 stars nice features but....
Great features for the price (especially on sale and with a nice rebate)! But the range is a far cry from the advertising claims. I'm sure its better than FRS, but even on high power (gmrs) I only get 1 to 1.5 miles consistantly. No where near the claimed 5 possible. I assume that is typical however. So again the features of this unit or great for the price. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars sound great, but jeez, get the basics right
These radios sound great - they are clear and crisp and the battery life is great. I also like the way the lock feature works and the fact that you can select high/low power at the touch of a button.

However, I bought a set of two of these, and at one point or another, both of them have refused to turn off. Turn the knob to the off position, it clicks to off, but the radio stays on. One of them works pretty well, only exhibiting this behavior occasionally, but the other one never turns off. Put the batteries in, it's on until they die (luckily that's a long time with these radios).

Secondly, they don't handle cold weather well at all.
Try this: Take one snowboarding, but leave it turned off. After about an hour or two of boarding you'll feel a vibration in your pocket. Yes, the thing has turned itself on, kicked itself into vibrate mode and started vibrating. But there's no display on the LCD! It still thinks it's turned off.

So Cobra, if you are listening, getting the thing to turn off shouldn't be a big technical challenge for you - engineers have been very successfully designing devices that turn off going all the way back to the invention of the light bulb.

5-0 out of 5 stars Not Much to Add to Other Reviews - It¿s Worth Purchasing!
See other relevant reviews under the item "Cobra GMRS Two-Way Radio Pair (PR 950-2 DX)." (Unlike the pair, this product has NiMH batteries and a charger.) I agree with those reviews, which basically say that these radios have great sound quality and range. Just a few more points for people who are trying to decide whether to buy one:

SIZE: About the same size as the competitors. Without the antenna and belt clip, it's 11 cm high, 6.5 cm wide, and 2.5 cm thick. (That's about 4-1/2 inches x 2-1/2" x 1".) The antenna adds another 6.5 cm (2-1/2") to the height on one side, and the convenient off/on/volume knob 1 cm (1/2") to the other. One unit weighs about 180 grams (6 ounces) with the batteries.

SCANNING: The PR950 has 22 channels: 7 FRS (Family Radio Service, channels 8-14), 8 GMRS (General Mobile Radio Service, channels 15-22), and 7 FRS/GMRS (channels 1-7). It has CTCSS (Continuous Tone Controlled Squelch System) with 38 codes per channel. Unfortunately, it can scan only the main channels, the codes within one channel, or the up-to-ten codes in its memory. For example, let's say that someone is transmitting on channel 6, code 17; your scan would be able to find that channel 6 is active, but then you have to do a second scan to determine that code 17 is the one being used. I find simultaneous channel-and-code scanning easier to use. Also, it takes five presses of the "mode" button to start scanning; I would have preferred a separate button.

BATTERY LIFE: In the manual, is given as 24 hours in a "1:1:18 ratio" (I think that means that it is tested when transmitting 5%, receiving 5%, and doing neither 90% of the time). That's a pretty long battery life compared with the competition. The selectable high/low (2 or 0.5 watt) power output on GMRS channels helps save the batteries.

OTHER NOTES: The LCD display has a lot of information, such as signal strength meter, whether power saver is on, etc. A button on the side toggles the backlight and also toggles the monitor-a-single-channel feature (called "Maximum Range Extender"). The wrist strap attaches to the bottom of the PR 950. There are speaker and microphone jacks at the top and a charger jack on the side; all three jacks have rubber covers. The 10 outgoing call tones are useful; when people call you, you can choose to be alerted by call tone, by vibration, or both. The voice activation (VOX) mode with five sensitivity settings worked fine for hands-free transmissions. The end-of-transmission tones or "roger beep" can be turned on or off. You can turn off the keystroke tones and can lock the Channel, Mode, and Enter buttons.

CONCLUSION: Buy this excellent 2-way radio at Amazon.com! ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars What a great radio!
The FRS-100 Radio is the best radio I have ever used! I have two 100's and 1 300. The 300 is slightly better but the 100's are still really nice. The 100's are easy to use and made by the most trusted company, Cobra. One switch can change you to channel 1 or 2 and you can alert other users with the call button. It makes lots of beeps so that they know they want to be spoken to. They can also go further then 2 miles. I have gone 7 miles and still had great reception! Some say Motorola has better radios, but they don't. They are just more expensive. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Replacement CA-25 Info
The Radio works well for a plain Jane CB Handie Talkie. Other reviews state that a CA-25 is a hard item to find. I am using a 12VDC@500 mah AC to DC adapter I had in the junk box for a charger. The Voltage is up about 15-16V unloaded which the 9 nicads at 10.8-12 Volts after internal circuit drop yields a safe slow charge rate to charge the nicads overnight. I found that the charge LED gets dim after the radio is "charged". This has worked well for a radio that is rather inexpensive and works well for the price. Other than a squirt of contact cleaner on the volume pot.. I have had not problems with mine..

5-0 out of 5 stars Let me know if u find the charger... I need one too... lol.
If you find the ca25 for the hh28... please let me know... on here or whatever... thanx.
