5-0 out of 5 stars Radios are working great!
I reviewed a number of radios and concluded that these were the best way to go. Now that I've been using them for a couple weeks or so, I've seen how great they are! I've been able to get good conversation with my wife for up to about 1.5-2 miles within the city (200,000+ people, no skyscrapers).

The call feature works the farthest--getting up to three miles or so.

One thing that other reviewers lack is knowledge about how radio signals work. You're only going to get the full miles on your receiver in the most optimal circumstances where there's not going to be a lot of noise (like outside of the city.)

The user interface seems to be decent; the only part of it I would change is the button named "lock" which really means "select". Other than that, it's been fairly user-friendly.

I've been using it for a while, and still haven't had to change the batteries yet. So, that's a plus.

So, if you want a good value for your money, go ahead and get these. My wife and I have been very pleased.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good Radio, Poor Manual
I have two of these radios which I use for recreational purposes. I have used them in urban areas and in the woods. While I cannot get 7 mile range, I do get 2.5 to 3 miles, which I am still satisfied with. The conditions I have used them in are rolling hills to small mountainous terrain of North Georgia which translates to very little LOS. Here, radios that are supposed to have a two mile range are lucky to reach 300 yards, so in comparison I think these are well within the ball park.

It is necessary to read and re-read the operators manual accompanying these radios to first familiarize yourself since some functions are not readily recognizable. Such as: The transmit power will vary based on the channel selected and/or the transmit power selected by the user. The manual could use some help from a technical writer to add more description of functionality. It is difficult to determine what accessories are available and specific to the 4000 unit but can be done using a combination of the Operators Manual, Cobra website and information on the container.

I recommend purchase.

1-0 out of 5 stars License REQUIRED
There is a license required for GMRS radios. It is $75. Funny how the merchants don't tell you that. Perhaps because of the "extra" cost? By the way... the fine for unlicensed operation of these radios is up to $10,000.

5-0 out of 5 stars Wilderness Experience
I've been an advisor for the outing club at my high school for over 15 years. We've used several different makes/models but these are THE BEST!!! We've used the Cobra 4000 for cycling & sea kayaking (enclosed in a dry bag), but the situation where they really shine is during wilderness backpacking trips. We frequently split our large group into 3 smaller units. Each unit(usually 12-15 students + 2 advisors) has two radios; one in the front and one in the back. We keep all 6 radios tuned to the same frequency in case of emergency. It's not unusual for each unit to be 3-5 miles away from each other in the mountainous terrain of New Hampshire. We use the "High" power setting on all units and can speak between units quite well. Sure things get a little scratchy as the distances increase but that's to be expected.

1-0 out of 5 stars TESTED THE 3 WATT COBRA RADIO
PURCHASED A SET TODAY AND PUT THEM THRU THE TEST. MATCHED THEM AGAINST THE SP21 MOTOROLA PRO. TESTED ON GMRS FREQS. FIRST THE 3 WATTS DID NOT MEAN ALOT AS THE DISTANCE WAS ABOUT ALMOST 2 MILES IN THE SUBURBAN AREAS TESTED. I GOT MORE DISTANCE OUT OF THE SP21 AND THATS ONLY 2 WATTS. NEXT THE SOUND QUALITY WAS POOR. THE TRANSMIT VOLUME WAS LOW AND NOT VERY LOUD AS A SP21. THE DISPLAY WINDOW WAS HARD TO READ=TOO SMALL OF LETTERING. VERY POOR BACKLIGHT,COULD NOT REALLY TELL IF IT HAD A LIGHT AT ALL. POORLY CONSTRUCTED,FELT CHEAP IN THE HAND. BUTTONS HARD TO PUSH. I AM TAKEING THEM BACK TO WALLMART FOR A REFUND. NOT WORTH ANY MONEY IN MY OPINION. DO NOT RECOMMEND AT ALL=BIG ZERO. ONE FINAL NOTE. IT HAS A GREAT DIGITAL ELECTRONIC COMPASS SO IF YOU NEED A COMPASS BUT IT BUT IF YOU INTEND ON USEING IT AS A 2 WAY RADIO FORGET IT. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars these walkie talkies are great
a while ago, i saw a pair of walkie talkies in my friend's room and we decided to play with them. We stuck a pair of headpones in each, and we went into the woods behind his house and started spying on his neighbors. This was a whole new thing for me, and it was unbelievably fun. Soon after, I got myself an upgraded pair of his, which are the walkie talkies you're looking at. The range hasn't failed me yet, and I've gotten pretty far from the other walkie talkie. Also, it has a great lock feature, which lets u put it in your pocket or quickly grab it withouth worrying that u changed the channel or volume or something. This has saved me a great deal of time while spying. The function of going into those subchannels didn't have and effect on blocking out my friend's early model of these, but whatever. All in all, you should definately buy these walkie talkie over any others.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great for Trips!
We took our 220s to Disney World and it made the trip much more relaxed. When my husband and I took the kids to separate areas of the park, we could instantly communicate if there were long lines or a change in plans. Even though lots of people were using them, we had no trouble finding a clear channel without others on "our" line. Now I use them to monitor the kids while they're out playing in the neighborhood. Just one beep and they know it's time to come home, and it gives me peace of mind to know they can call if they need help.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great buy
Just bought these radios. So far they are everything they were advertised to be. Wife and I tested the range from vehicle to house in suburban setting, consistently over 1 mile range. The radios are very easy to operate and work well with the other radios I have tested them with(Motorola and Radio Shack). I found these to have better clarity than the Motorola's as well. Battery life is about as advertised and with the NiCad battery charging time is about 3 hours. There are radios out there with more features but my five star rating is based on getting what you pay for.

5-0 out of 5 stars Added peace of mind for a Mom
I picked this up so that my 11 year old could carry it with him when he goes out to play in the neighborhood. Whether he is outside or in a friend's house the communication between us is crystal clear. The radio is small enough to fit in his pocket or can be clipped to a belt. I don't have to wonder where he is or how he's doing anymore. I can find out in a second. I suspect the neighbors appreciate my not having to yell out the doors and windows for my son anymore or having to call their houses to see if he's there. My son likes not having to ask to use a phone and not having to run home with a quick question. We are very pleased with this purchase and feel it was worth every penny.

4-0 out of 5 stars killer radios
i bought the cobra 220 radios for a ski trip. the first thing you notice about them is the size. the radios are extremely compact and can fit in your back pocket. they come with a belt holster. it is made of plastic and is flexible so as to allow the radio to snap in place. in my opinion, the holster is flimsey. i did not trust it to a fall while skiing and just carried the radio in my pocket. the radios are solid. cobra did not skimp on the plastic. these units do not feel soft at all.the reception was exceptional. these radios operate on all 14 channels of the frs band and have 38 subcodes. these subcodes do not actually give you extra channels. what they do it block out transmissions on the same channel that do not have a matching subcode. this sounds great at first, but it does have some drawbacks. since you do not hear communications from others with different subcodes, it is possible to transmit over another transmission on the same frequency. in this case, the person at the other end will not hear you clearly, if at all. the radio has an end of transmission beep. it is at times quite annoying, and there is no way to turn it off. all in all, these radios exceeded my expectations. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Cobra GMRS 950 DX
This moderately sized, 22 channel unit provides a lot of radio for the price. 2 watts of output on all GMRS channels and 0.5 watts on FRS only (switchable on GMRS) are available. A wide range of call tones, VOX operation, programmable scan, backlighting and water resistance are useful features. The listed operation time is 24 hours with 4 AAA alkalines. The units come with a hand strap but no evident attachment point. A removable belt clip is included. The units are lightweight (essentially all plastic-rubber construction) but feel well built...

5-0 out of 5 stars Cobra GMRS Two-Way Radio Pair (PR 950-2 DX)
We just rec'd the radios via UPS and couldn't wait to try them out. Aft. putting in the battaries and reading the instruction manual, I went out around the neighborhood while my wife stayed in our apt. I was very impressed w/ the clarity of these radios. I had bought a diff. brand last yr. at Wal-Mart for hunting (in WV Natl. Forrests). They also had a 5mi. range. We were lucky if we could understand each other at 100yds and these were a major brand. Our older 2 channel Cobra Walk-abouts were better than those. Needless to say, I returned them for refund. These new Cobra's are incredible and loaded w/ features. The only thing that has me puzzled is that there's no place to clip the wrist straps that came w/ the radios. These I'm sure, will prove to be a great investment. Thanks Cobra!
Be blessed!

5-0 out of 5 stars Awesome Radios
I must say I was very impressed with the 950DX Radio. This is the first radio I have had where I did not get excessive static while talking. I tried another brand, instead of sticking with Cobra, and I will never do that again. I live in a woody and hilly area and the reception is still good, even from a couple miles away. I would definitely recommend these radios to anyone.

5-0 out of 5 stars Antenna Question
The previous review that mentions antennas are key to a good CB setup is correct. For a normal CB user I would recommend either the Wilson lil' Wil or the Wilson 500 antenna. Both are magnetic mount antennas. The lil' Wil antenna is a relatively small antenna and it's only around $39.00. Actually any Wilson CB antenna will be fine. Also, to do a good job at setting up your antenna you should purchase an SWR meter. They are not expensive. You only need the meter connected inline between the radio and antenna when you are adjusting the antenna. Once you are done adjusting the antenna you can take the meter out of the connection and connect the antenna directly to the radio. Don't be fooled by cheap ordinary CB antennas like you will find at radio shack. Do not settle for anything less then a Wilson antenna. Cobra and Uniden both make fabulous CB radios so either make will be fine.

4-0 out of 5 stars Response to Range
The range of any cb depends upon the antenna. A $30 cb on a good antenna will have considerable more range than a $150 cb on a cheap antenna. Inexpensive cbs do have less sensitivity and features of more expensive cbs, but if you are just starting out, I would suggest an inexpensive cb with a good antenna such as a Wilson 'Lil Will' magnet mount. If you purchase the antenna at a cb shop, normally they will be more than happy to install and tune the antenna for you free of charge. The antenna normally runs around $30 and is one of the better entry level antennas out there. I have ran a cb for 10 years and I still use one as a back up. But remember, the secret to range is in the antenna system.. not so much the radio. But whatever you choose.. do not get one of those 'through the glass' or a 'rubber magnet mount' antenna. These are poor antennas with very limited range, usually less that a mile. Get something with a steel whip equal to or over 36" in height.

1-0 out of 5 stars One Star is Too Good a Rating!
Repeating the sentiment of the earlier reviews? Yes, I am. Important to do so? I'd say, yes, it is, since you might think the other three reviewers were just unlucky.

The Cobra 500 is absolutely useless. It locks onto the required 3 satellites ... sometimes. Usually not. But when it does lock on, it loses them within a couple of minutes. On the other hand, when you look at all the features listed in their literature and compare it to the modest price, you think it's too good to be true. Unfortunately, it is. Truly a P.O.S.

1-0 out of 5 stars Nothing comes close to a COBRA! Don't you!
I purchased (through the Air Miles rewards program) the COBRA GPS500, not once, but TWICE. I first purchased the unit and believed it to be faulty it performed so poorly. Signal acquisition time seemed "forever" and it frequently lost satellite lock. On several occasions, between establishing lock, loosing lock and again re-establishing lock, the unit tells me I've moved upwards to one half mile whereas I've remained stationary, only changing the direction the unit was pointing. Simply changing the direction the unit was pointing (like changing direction in your car or boat) was enough to loose satellite lock! Very poor! I was able to exchange the original unit (unfortunately NOT able to return it) and when I received the replacement unit, it, like the first one, performs very, very poorly. The features offered on the unit would led you to believe it would "shine in the dark," whereas in actual fact, it is the poorest of any GPS unit I've ever used. And to add insult to injury, while I was awaiting deliver of this second unit, believing the first one faulty, I wasted an additional $100.00 by purchasing the PC interface cable, power cord and auto mount. What is that COBRA slogan: "Nothing comes close to a COBRA" You better believe it! Not even a satellite signal is able to get close!

1-0 out of 5 stars The worse of all GPS'
I've just bought this gps , and I'm gonna tell you I'm totally dissapointed with this unit.At the same time my father bought a Garmin eTrex unit and it's much better. I now regret all the fun I've made about his GPS and mine because mine has 18 satellite connection and his just 12. Fisrt of all the Garmin connects in about 45 second while the Cobra in 2 minutes.
Meanwhile the Garmin gets 9 sats the Cobra only gets 5. Now I'm working with UTM coordinates and the Garmin shows me all the info I need while the Cobra doesn't.
The unit handling is friendly user for the Garmin while the Cobra doesn't.
An overall qualification 0 out of 10.

1-0 out of 5 stars A truely terrible GPS unit
I purchased a Cobra GPS 500 unit to upgrade from my base model Garmin Etrex. I had thought the 18 channels and FAST circuitry would make it operate better then my Etrex. I was sadly disappointed. The Cobra will not hold satellite lock in any kind of cover at all. I am an experienced GPS user and outdoorsman who does a lot of hunting, and I can tell you without any doubt that the Cobra GPS 500 is totally useless for use in the woods. The Cobra GPS 500 loses satellite lock in areas where my Garmin Etrex held it easily. (This situation appears to be common to the entire Cobra GPS line because I have a friend who purchased a GPS 100 and he complains about the same thing.) To top things off, I contacted Cobra Customer Service about these problems and they wouldn't even respond to my email. So what you have here is a truely terrible product backed by terrible customer service. I would recommend that any potential buyers of this product avoid it at all cost, and spend their money on a Garmin or Magellan unit instead. ... Read more

What is WAAS?
GPS receivers have an accuracy of about 15 meters, but you can get to as close as 3 meters with a WAAS-enabled receiver. WAAS stands for Wide Area Augmentation System, which is a network of satellites and ground stations (in North America) that were designed to improve the accuracy and ensure the integrity of information coming from GPS satellites. Originally implemented by the FAA for aviation use, WAAS is particularly useful for serious outdoors enthusiasts as well as for precise in-city navigation.

1-0 out of 5 stars Cobra GPS 100: only good as a paperweight
This unit can almost never lock onto a satelite. When it does it is innaccurate. I am returning it.

1-0 out of 5 stars GPS loses signal and cannot reacquire
This is one of the worst GPS units I have used. The keys are not intuitive, the battery cover does not fit correctly (how can it be IPX7 water resistant compliant as advertised?), the unit loses GPS lock, when GPS lock is lost it cannot reacquire it.

The screens are nice in that you can configure the information, but the unit is not as flexible as say a Magellan Meridian.

2-0 out of 5 stars Too Bad
I am new to the GPS user world and had high hopes for this unit. Its primary use was going to be simple for hunting & hiking help. I have read several negative reports that describe fairly accurately the same troubles I have. To be brief, my complaints are: Accuracy - horizontally off by 100 to 500 ft, vertically (altimeter) off by up to thousands of feet; Satellite lock - unreliable no matter what is or is not overhead, even on clear days; Tracking - unit seems to freeze after first waypoint direction is established, but walking in that direction the unit does not always update and is unreliable.

I have other Cobra products that are great, however the most disappointing thing about thie unit is that the advertisement of features is at best inaccurate and at worst misleading. It seems that the unit is working like the rest, but certainly without the improved capabilities expounded by Cobra.

Update: Cobra replaced the unit with a new one with no questions asked. Still problematic but due to Cobra Customer Service being proactive, I raised the rating. ... Read more
