4-0 out of 5 stars Great sound, but some things not well implemented
Pros:
1. The sound quality is this radio's #1 best feature. Be prepared: once you get used to it, you'll never be able to tolerate an average clock-radio.
2. The time display is a blue background and white numbers, which I find to be bright enough to read but not glaring. As an added bonus it's almost like a nightlight.
3. Love the weekend skip! Second alarm allows me to keep the first alarm reserved for my "standard" wakeup and use second one for naps or schedule change.

Cons:
1. Pray tell, dear Aiwa engineers, what *were* you thinking by omitting volume control from the remote?!!
2. AM/PM indicator is too tiny to read from a distance so that setting an alarm via remote is tricky.

It would have been nice if the radio also included the feature of having the alarm increasing volume.

4-0 out of 5 stars My Radio Review
This radio is great! The remote control comes in very handy.
I have two complaints about this radio:
#1: the alarms may not be loud enough for a heavy sleeper.
#2: it is not possible to turn the volume using the remote.
The music comes through loud and clear.
I would recommend this radio to anyone. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Poor Customer Service
Navigating through AIWA's customer service is almost as bad as dealing with the IRS. It makes their warranty practically worthless.

In my experience, the AIWA products I've owned (one shelf system, and one portable tape player) have functionally lasted about a year or less. Save yourself some money (and more importantly the headache of dealing with their customer service) and buy a Sony or a Pioneer (anything else).

3-0 out of 5 stars Bright lights
The AIWA FR-A200 AM/FM Clock Radio works about as one would expect a low-end clock radio to work (if its music you are after there are better radios in the $60.00 range, but for news and early morning traffic reports who needs fine reproduction). The controls are fairly easy to get used to, although the "Sleep" button is sometimes a little difficult to locate in the dark. The "Snooze" button is a snap to find. The only drawback of this Clock Radio is that the green luminous numbers on the clock are VERY bright and may keep light sleepers awake. The light from the radio might fool you into thinking dawn has come earlier than expected. Otherwise I have no problems with this machine. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great quality for its size.
We bought this radio/CD player for the kitchen so we wanted something that wouldn't take up too much space. When we found this one, it was love at first sight, and it has not let us down. 9. Aiwa FRA308 AM/FM Clock Radio with TV & Weather band

Asin: B00000JYL2
Catlog: CE
Manufacturer: Aiwa
Sales Rank: 34269
US | Canada | United Kingdom | Germany | France | Japan

Amazon.com Review

Heard any good TV shows lately? With the Aiwa FR-A308, you might not have to miss your favorite show even if you're away from the TV. The FR-A308 is the rare clock radio that complements an AM/FM tuner with TV and weather bands.

It's not like listening to cable TV, however; you can receive only over-the-air signals from channels 2 through 13 in your area. So if you live in a big city, you might receive as many as seven channels. In rural areas, with fewer channels, you might be able to tune in two or three. But either way, you can probably fall asleep to The Tonight Show or wake up to Today.

The FR-A308 offers a modern take on the classic cathedral radio (Aiwa calls it a bullet design), with a green LED display set against a glistening black contour. The dual alarms can be set to either a beep tone or any of the four analog bands (AM, FM, TV, or weather).

Although the FR-308 accepts a battery backup--a 9-volt battery is required--it doesn't work like most backups. Most clock radios with battery backup typically shut down when power is lost but preserve the correct time when power is restored. The FR-308 backs up the clock and alarm for about 10 minutes, letting you unplug and move the unit without interruption.

This clock radio can seem confusing to tune at first because the lower end of the TV band is combined with the FM radio. Just remember that you have to adjust a switch on the side of the radio to give you one of three settings: the AM band, FM with TV channels 2 through 6, and weather with TV channels 7 through 13. Once you've mastered it, you'll shift quickly between radio, weather, and TV. The FR-A308's versatile four-band option can be matched by few clock radios.

Pros:

  • Four bands: AM/FM/TV/Weather
  • Easy access to all controls

Cons:

  • Confusing tuning dial
  • Reception on TV and weather bands not as reliable as on AM and FM

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Device
FORGOT A FEW COMMENTS__This CD/Radio is awsome. AIWA comes through again. Easy to operate, good spond, BIG numbers on the clock. I recommend this cd/radio. Plus it has a remote.

5-0 out of 5 stars Price + good product = VALUE.
I paid 50 bucks for a refurbished unit. Nice product good sound (not great but for 50 bucks hey!) Easy to program, lots on features such as a weekend alarm. Holds 3 CD's. Lots of radio station program storage. PLUS a remote control.
Only negative... remote does not control the volumn.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great clock radio!
Based on the first review, I sent for this clock radio, and have to agree... it's great! The sound is wonderful, the CD changer works great, and the instructions are easy to follow for setting up alarms and CD programs. The sound is crisp and clear, and I like having many of the buttons on the unit itself as well as on the remote.

The only things I wish this clock radio had were a dimmer option for the light (though I must admit that the light is not glaring in the least, and it's not a gigantic problem) and a bass booster.

The listing on Amazon said that the unit could play CD-R/RW's, so I had some concerns when the instructions said that they might not work. However, so far I've had no trouble with playing them.

I was originally looking for a clock radio that had a tape player as well as a CD changer... but they're not even made anymore unless you get them in a mini-system, which was far too large for my nightstand. However, I'm going to get the hardware to transfer my tapes to CD, which I'll then be able to play on this clock radio.

I'm really pleased with this unit and have NO regrets about purchasing it. I too, did a whole lot of research (online as well as in stores) before deciding on this particular CD clock radio. It's a nice-looking radio, and I'm glad I got it!

5-0 out of 5 stars YOU WON'T BE SORRY!!
I researched clock radios for weeks on end and by far, this one is superior! Great quality speakers and sound, directions easy to follow, product looks even better than the picture and LCD light is bright and highly visible for an aging Husband! Bought this for our bedroom and could not be happier! Buy this with confidence! You won't be sorry... ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars A mixed bag
I did a lot of research to find the best CD clock radio for my purposes. I needed one with good sound and a small footprint and this one has those. It has other very good qualities, including a quiet CD mechanism, dual alarms with weekend skip, and fairly good FM reception. However, it has a couple of issues which keep me from recommending it wholeheartedly. Most annoying is that the alarms don't work unless the CD is turned off, and it doesn't turn off when finished playing--you have to manually shut off the power. So unless you use the sleep function, you can't go to sleep to the CD and wake up with the alarm. The display is too bright, not adjustable, and hard to read on an angle. The clock/radio/alarm set sequence is not exactly intuitive. There aren't buttons for direct access to the FM presets, just forward and back. Also, the first one I got from Amazon was defective--the CD player didn't work correctly--and it took almost two months to get a replacement, although it does work. Overall, this may well be the best product of its kind for the price, but it's far from perfect.

1-0 out of 5 stars Looks great but that's it
This is a great looking radio with a small footprint - a nice alternative to the black cubes. But that's it. I had it for less than six months when the CD began stopping and re-starting on its own. Now it just stops. The display is as bright as a night light and can't be adjusted. Now it's basically a $79 piece of sculpture on my nightstand. Soon it will belong to the Goodwill.

1-0 out of 5 stars Beware of labor warranty
The labour warranty is only for 90 days.If you need repairs after the 90 day period the cost of labor is higher than the value of the product. If available purchase an extended warranty.

2-0 out of 5 stars Not such a hot buy
I bought this radio for my daughters because I wanted a stereo clock radio that had a small footprint and headphone outputs. The radio is fairly small, and it has stereo sound, but the LCD display is pretty hard to see, due to terrible contrast. The radio reception is quite good, but it's wasted because the speakers are tiny and sound that way. I returned one of them for service after 2 1/2 months because the system would "latch-up", with the only way to reset it being to unplug it. Labor warranty is only 90 days, and you need to pay postage yourself.
Skip this one.

2-0 out of 5 stars Not what I expected.
I looked high and low for a CD/Alarm/Clock Radio with good sound, nice aesthetics, and a small footprint. I thought I found it in this one... I was wrong as usual. The choices for me were slim, $500 for the Bose wave, or $79 for this. You still get what you pay for. The FM reception is fair, the sound is substandard, and the cd mechanism whistles when spinning. The unit is also too light, where pushing firmly against any of the front mounted buttons slides the radio back. The display is way too bright, not adjustable, and hard to read on an angle. I attempted to block some of the brightness with some window tint. It worked well blocking both the shinning light and the ability to see the already dim display. Needless to say it sat on my nightstand, looking towards the wall for a couple of days, then was on Ebay. End of story. ... Read more
