[...] I have now parted company with my aging Psion 5 and am using the Nokia Communicator. Even with an upgrade to the V6 software, Corex appear to be totally US centric and do not support Symbian (just Palm) so the only way to update my Communicator is to synchronise CardScan with Lotus Notes, then Lotus Notes with the Symbian based Communicator; a convoluted exercise. It's still a great device though - but it could be outstanding...
I purchased the unit and followed the instructions for the set up. During the set up, the user must test the unit by scanning a business card into the scanner. My unit would not pull the business card over the scanner. I re-installed the software, tried again without success. I contacted Corex customer service, and was given instructions on testing the scanning device. The results of the test indicated the unit was defective. I was instructed to return the unit, at my expense, to Corex customer service in Germany. I had to pay shipping plus customs clearance fees. After the scanner was 'repaired' it was returned to me. Again, I had to pay customs charges in Thailand. Upon installing the unit, again it would not pull the card through the scanner. Running the same tests, it appeared I had the same or another defective unit. I contacted Corex in the USA, and requested a new system be shipped to me. I received a nice note from Corex customer service with installation instructions, but no acknowledgement of my request. Buy from Corex with caution, they do not support their products. Buyer Beware!
The scanner works well most of the time. With the Auto Scan feature you can set your cards down and, if all goes right, come back later to verify the information. Cards are rapidly read and the images stored until you verify the accurate placement of the card information into the software fields. This leads me to one of the major problems with the CardScan. Understandably it's difficult to account for all business card formats, with the contact info. being placed in all possible ways. Corex has not fully figured out how to ensure placement of the card info. into the software fields. Only about 50% of the time was most of the info. properly placed. Otherwise you'll have to go through and cut and paste into the correct fields. The CardScan does not always cleanly scan the business cards. The software is designed to allow you to compare the scanned image of the card to the fields to which the info. was assigned. Good idea but doesn't work so well. To verify that the card was read properly, you'll have to keep your scanned cards with you. Of course, once it's verified you can put the cards away for good. Two great features of the CardScan: (1) it allows you to scan the back of the business card and (2) you can make your own entries for those cards that are too difficult to read. ... Read more

Amazon.com Product Description With simple plug-and-play installation, the machine is easy to use: simply feed a card into the slot, and then watch as the software deciphers the information on the card and categorizes it into the database. The machine can accurately read cards from United States, Canada, France, Australia, United Kingdom, Germany, and others countries. The software also features AutoMap, expanded connectivity to synchronize with more handheld devices and mobile phones, and access to CardScan.Net, where users can access their business card database via any Web browser. Small enough to fit in your hand but durable enough to take to trade shows and meetings, the CardScan Executive is an ideal way to organize the stacks of business cards that would otherwise clutter your briefcase, wallet, or desk. (Note that the CardScan Executive is just right for one person, but if you're looking for a unit that can help your whole team, consider the CardScan Office.) Features Reviews (14)
I've used it for over 6 months and love it. Installation was easy - follow the instructions - install software - plug in the USB cable. The scanner is very fast and very accurate. I normally don't have to make any corrections to the scanning results. Cards with very unusual fonts or layouts sometimes need correction. The included software works flawlessly with ACT! or outlook. Another cool feature is the link to the Cardscan.net site. This allows you to back-up/store and access your business card file on online. It is also very easy to use. Again I have found this to be a lifesaver for handling business cards and with many months of use I have had no problems.
Why only 4 stars I would like easier ways to select which contacts to transfer into other programs (I scan everything since its so easy but i dont need a lot of the data on a daily basis so i dont want to transfer everything) and easier ways to split and merge databases by batch selection. It has these facilities but its too hard ! As someone who lives and travels in Asia many of my cards have the local language details on the back. You can scan the back you cant print it. Give a printed copy to a cab driver is an easy way to get to where i want to go when i cant speak the language. Finally the copy and paste is fiddly. But i use it every day and i have all my cards going back 7 years accessible by a simple text search.
Unfortunately the software does not work under XP for users that do not have administrator privileges. Corex claims that this is not a "bug" but rather you must be a "power user" (aka administrator) to use this product. After two fruitless hours of experimentation with changing access rights to the program file directories, I relented and elevated my user's level to administrator. After that the cards would scan ... The machine can accurately read cards from United States, Canada, France, Australia, Germany, the United Kingdom, and other countries. The CardScan Office includes six software licenses (expandable in 3, 5, or 10 user-licensing packs), enabling multiple users to access and update shared information from one database. Individual users can also create password-protected databases for private contacts. Other features include AutoMap, expanded connectivity to synchronize with more handheld devices and mobile phones, and access to CardScan.Net where users can access their business card database via any Web browser. Small enough to fit in your hand, and durable enough to take to trade shows and meetings, the CardScan Executive is a great way to organize the stacks of business cards that would otherwise clutter your briefcase, wallet, or desk. The CardScan Office is just right for a six-person team, but if you're looking for a CardScan just for yourself, check out the CardScan Executive 600c V6. Features Reviews (1)
The software parsing works unbelievably well. In lay terms parsing means that the software knows what is a company name and what is an email address and puts them into the right place, unless the font is highly graphical. The older models couldn't read white type on dark cards, but this one can. Also, once you receive it and have the box sitting on your desk, it seems intimidating to install, but it only takes about 1/2 hour to install so that the data goes automatically into ACT!. I test alot of software/hardware products but most of them I return. The card scanner and the palm pilot are my two staples. This product I not only use but demo. It's very impressive. And years later clients thank me for having recommended it. ... Read more
