Amazon.com Product Description

Whether shooting up-close or from a distance, the Optura 40 delivers video and photos with exceptional definition and contrast, making every shot you take a potential award-winner. Featuring Genuine Canon Optics, the Optura 40 expands on this range with a 14x Optical Zoom and 280x Digital Zoom. Both models allow you to cover all the angles, be it wide or telephoto, ensuring that you always get the shot you want.

Auto-Exposure Bracketing
In uncertain lighting conditions, the Auto-Exposure Bracketing feature will make sure your bases are covered: With a single press of the PHOTO button, the camcorder records three photos with different exposures. Later, you can choose which photo is best for printing or storing.
Enjoy stunning video and photos
The secret behind the Optura 30 and Optura 40 camcorders' incredible video and photos is Canon's DIGIC DV technology. Since videos and photos have different color requirements, DIGIC DV uses special color optimization techniques when processing an image for output to a TV or printer. The result is accurate, life-like color reproduction in all your videos and photos.

Catch all the action without the shake
Life rarely sits still for a shot, that's why the Optura 30 and Optura 40 feature Canon's advanced Image Stabilization system. Now you can keep images smooth and steady, even at full telephoto and while panning or zooming. The large 2.5" LCD and Color Viewfinder further helps to compose sensational shots from any angle.

Dazzle on-lookers with vibrant color shots
Now you can relive those precious moments with all their true vibrant colors. While traditional camcorders process color with a standard CMYG filter (resulting in duller colors), the Optura 30 and Optura 40 camcorders use Canon's RGB Primary Color Filter, which separates light passing through the lens into their true red, green and blue color components. The result is professional-quality images that deliver natural-looking tones and superior color rendition.

Get the full picture on your wide-screen TV
Unlike camcorders which only record a vertically stretched picture, the Optura 30 and Optura 40 both feature a High-Resolution 16:9 Mode that records video in true 16:9 ("letterbox") format for playback on wide-screen TVs. When shooting in the 16:9 Mode, the entire width of the 2.2 Megapixel CCD image sensor is used to capture your footage. The result is wide-screen quality videos that are certain to impress even the biggest "big screen" fan.

Canon's Megapixel CCD
Canon's Megapixel CCD Image Sensor delivers crisp images with life-like detail. Whether you are shooting video or photos with the camcorder, you will get the best results. The CCD works like film -- when light is captured by the sensor, it registers an image and advanced processing converts the pixels into digital data creating your video or photos.

Canon's exclusive DIGIC DV
DIGIC DV, our exclusive signal processing circuit, makes it possible to achieve accurate color for both video and digital photos. Since video and digital photos have different color requirements, DIGIC DV utilizes two different color techniques to maximize video quality on a TV and still image quality for print or computer display.

Take it from sight to website at a moment's notice
Thanks to the Optura's improved Motion JPEG feature, you can shoot video ready for streaming over the Internet or for e-mailing. The Motion JPEG Mode records your footage onto the Secure Digital memory card at 15 frames/second, giving you up to 60 minutes of recording time on a 512MB card. You can then quickly and easily transfer your movies to your computer using the USB cable.

Make incredible panoramas and portraits
The Optura line of camcorders gives you the power to edit your still images in a variety of exciting ways. The Stitch Assist feature allows you to capture and create breathtaking 360-degree panoramas, while the Skin Detail Mode helps you take complimentary close-ups of people by softening details and reducing skin imperfections.

Turn your camcorder into a webcam
Exclusive to Canon, the Optura camcorders feature a Network Mode that enables you to remotely control your camcorder through the DV Messenger2 software application. Control the focus and zoom of your camcorder from a computer while streaming the video via its IEEE 1394 terminal

Explore your creativity with the supplied software
Included in your Optura Kit are Pinnacle Studio 9SE and Pinnacle Instant Photo Album, two powerful editing programs that can help turn your videos and photos into lasting memories.

4-0 out of 5 stars A GREAT camera!
Most of the negative comments I read about the camera are from people that don't know how to use the camera. It takes a little time to go through the menus and read the cryptic (non-detailed) manual. And, not all the features are described in the manual.

- The camera does very well in low light indoor situations if you put it in "Indoor" mode.

- I barely noticed the camera motor noise during quiet scenes. I think the only reason I noticed it is because I was listening for it.

- The camera fits very nicely in my hand, with the strap and zoom switch in just the right positions.

- This is my first digital camcorder and it was very easy to learn how to use the basic features. Some of the advanced features took some trial and error to figure out.

- My only disappointments were that it did not come with a tape or firewire, the manual is poor, and the included 8MB card is ridiculous (buy a 256 or 512).

I did a lot of research before selecting this camera, and I am confident I made the right choice. I would have given it 4.5 stars if I had the option.

5-0 out of 5 stars After small Adjusts, the 40 Rocks!
The Optura 30/40 has two default settings that need to be changed. The first is that in Easy and Auto modes, shutter speed can be a slow as 1/30 second. This causes video to blur, ghosts with fast movement, and blur (grain?) in low light. Go to Auto Slow Shutter (A.SL.Shutter and turn it OFF). The shutter speed will be no slower than 1/60, creating much sharper video.

The second is that audio is defauted to 12 bit. Change this to 16 bit for better audio.

I am extrememly pleased with my Optura 40. It's great in low light, is user friendly, stabilization works well in both 5:4 and 16:9 modes, and the 14X optical is all I'll ever need. The quality of the video and audio is great. It's comfortable in my hand and feels "solid". I like it being a top loader since I use both a monopod and tripod when I can.

Negatives include: In 5:4 mode, tele isn't wide enough (but is fine in 16:9), the cover for the S-video jack seems cheap, and I wish it had optical stabilization. However, it does have better stabilization than my Nikon Hi8 camcorder that has optical stabilization--so it has excellent electronic image stabilization. Also, the 34mm filter/adapter size is unusual. However, step up rings are available (e.g. 34mm to 37mm)and with the fast selling Opturas 30/40 and Eluras 60/65/70 having 34mm filters, I suspect that they're be plenty of 34mm filters available shortly.

2-0 out of 5 stars A Disappointment!
As many camcorder fans, I was excited by the Canon Press Release about Canon Optura 40 Camcorder, pre ordered it and received it late May. After opening the box, the camera looks great: compact, slick, nice looking lens. However, after a couple of time trial shootings, all these nice impressions were gone for good! A few Major disappointments:
1) Poor video image. The video image has too much "digital" jaggies both in regular daylight and lower light environment shooting. When you play back on the TV, you see the "fluttery" effect all the time. When you pause the image, the jaggies are very obvious and horrible. This is even worse when you shoot in the low light environment.
2) Noisy zoom lever. The zoom lever on the top on the camera body was not a well made (or designed) part. When you zoom in & out using the lever, the noise is very obvious and annoying. This noise was clearly recorded heard from the tape when you playback.
3) The still camera quality is less than a regular 2.0 MP digital camera.
4) The strap that holds your hand of video filming is not in the right position to make your hand comfortable.
5) The 2.5" view LCD screen has too much info displayed and this made the small 2.5" LCD very noisy.

I contacted the Canon USA for my questions. No clear answers were given about the image quality. I compared Optura 40 with Panasonic PV-GS200, the Panasonic has far more better video image quality. Big disappointment for me.

5-0 out of 5 stars Superb camera
The camera has superb color rendering. Also has a true 16:9 CCD - recordings look truly remarkable on my widescreen TV. I had no shutter issues whatsoever.

5-0 out of 5 stars the jury has returned with a verdict
I pre-ordered this camera and got it the day it was "released" (5/20), thank you Amazon. Overall the feature content is pretty slick but I have a few issues I need to investigate before I declare that I am in love with this camera or that I am disappointed.

My big concern is that I see a very strange effect when I am mildly zoomed on a subject and the subject is moving around. I see a "fluttery" effect as though the shutter is too slow for the action. It gets really bad at times and is really annoying. I am not sure if the camera (in its "auto-everything" mode) is attempting to adjust to the change in the subject but whatever it is its not good. I will follow up with Canon to determine what the issue is to see if this is a feature of the camera, if my camera is defective or if I am not using it correctly.

I did a side by side comparison with my old Sony DCR-TRV20. The Canon's image at times shows off the 3x more effective pixels and is generally brighter than the Sony but again I am not totally blown out of the room with improvements with the Canon. Low light is a problem and it generates grainy pictures.

Update: june 13, 2004

I noticed the review where the guy mentions the "auto slow shutter" control. BINGO. Barring this strangeness that is now solved, this camera is excellent. In my opinion the video quality is more film-like than video. I assume this is due to the high number of pixels.

As far as the still image feature goes, I've taken really good and really bad shots. Its all about holding the camera still and in my opinion its a little challenging considering the location of straps and buttons on this camera for still shots. None-the-less, if you take your time and think about it, you can get some great stills.

Great Camera. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Not bad given the other options
I was looking for some very specific features when I bought this camera (I actually bought an Elura 90, used it for a week, and switched to the Optura 50 for the S-video I/O.) I'm a strictly family documentary person -- most of my videos are done at home in poor light and using the widest angle settings.

This was my list:

mac iMovie compatible
light sensitivity (good images in dim home lighting at night)
analog to digital conversion w/ S-video I/O
reliable, tough - ideally made in Japan
wide-angle for images taken from 4-12 feet
quiet motor
warranty & service (1 yr base, 2 yr when extended by my AMEX card)
price comparisons include travel charger & extended life battery
image quality
focus capability - ideally a manual focus ring
16/9 ratio playback ok
sensor: 2mpix, 1/3.6 ccd
external mike jack
top loading

Overall the Optura 50 meets most of the items quite well. I think the indoor image quality is pretty good; better than the Elura 90. Not as light sensitive as my old SONY Hi-8, but it's far smaller and lighter. This was my biggest concern, but I think the camera passes this one. The best results come with 3 CCD cameras with larger sensors -- typically costing $3,000 or so.

Canon includes a ridiculous, worthless, still image camera. Sigh. (I have two fine Canon still cameras.) What a waste. They do, however, also include an S-video for higher quality analog I/O (you have to buy your own S-video cable though!). The 2005 Eluras now lack this feature (arghh).

The Optura 50 doesn't have enough wide-angle range for my tastes (I still do 3/4 capture as my iMovie s/w expects that) but it does better than the Elura 90. It's probably as good as one will get nowadays.

Mac OS X compatibilty is excellent. The manual is sparse but adequate. Digital passthrough is tricky to figure out (read the manual carefully) but it works well.

The camera is indeed made in Japan and it feels reasonably robust -- as much as any competing device. The charger is compact, but I bought the reasonably priced very nice travel charger and an extended life battery. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars La mejor de su clase

5-0 out of 5 stars A great camera
This is the new version of the EOS Rebel 2000 (they called it "K2" instead of "2K", I suppose in order to avoid giving the impression that the camera is 4 years out of date, which it is not).

It is simply a great camera at a great price. It works as well as any 35mm camera on the market, has a reasonably fast winder, and best of all it takes all of the huge variety of EF Canon lenses. It is actually very light, so you can carry it around without fatigue, or you can bulk it up by adding the extended grip (which gives it a very nice feel).

The zoom lenses are a little slow.I recommend that you get the body only, and start with the 50mm f/2.8 MKII lens, which is a steal at about $70.Together, they make an outstanding, affordable, high-quality package for those of us who still love film more than digital. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The Digital Camera All Others are Measured by
For what seems like forever, my gal pal Sara and I have been using a pair of EOS 10qd's I picked up in Hong Kong several years ago. We'd squandered a small fortune on a whole batch of "L" lenses, but we'd never upgraded our camera bodies, I guess because the silly things just refused to break. They just kept right on taking picture after picture, year after year. Oh when was the harsh, ocean going, corroding weather of the Caribbean going to wreak havoc on these cameras, so we'd have an excuse to go out and buy something new. Apparently never. Canon builds good stuff.

Then one day Sara told me she wanted to be a two camera body girl, and she wasn't gonna count that tiny little Olympus digital she kept in her backpack that we used to grab quick shots for boating magazines. She wanted a new body and a film scanner, too.

So we laid out the big bucks and got her an EOS-1V and me, not wanting to be left out, got a digital 20D, because I was just plain tired of being looked down on by these professional sports shooters with duel digitals hanging off their shoulders. So now we're both two camera body people, she's got the best film camera ever made and I've got the best digital camera ever made. And we both have a ten year old 10qd as well. Canon, you can't go wrong with them. They are the standard all others are measured by.

Amazon.com Product Description

Canon raises the stakes for all-in-one digital imaging devices with the release of the Canon Optura 500 (and the companion Optura 400; see a comparison table at the end), which is as adept at shooting digital video as it is snapping high-resolution digital stills. Shorter and more lightweight than its predecessors, the brushed silver Optura 500 weighs just 1.2 pounds with tape and battery and measures 2.1 x 4.2 x 4.0 inches. Like its sibling, the Optura 500 offers 2.2-megapixel resolution for fine video and photo details, a 10x optical zoom lens, image stabilization, built-in SD/MMC memory card slot, and PictBridge compatibility for direct printing of still photos to compatible printers. The Optura 500 also adds a higher resolution LCD, mini video light, ring light adapter for close-up shots, MPEG4 video for email and Web, and USB 2.0 connectivity for streaming.

Optics and Resolution
The Optura 500 has a 2.2-megapixel CCD, which produces 1230K effective pixels for video and 2 million effective pixels for still photos, for images up to 1623 x 1224 pixels (good enough for print enlargements up to 8 x 10 inches). Canon's camcorder lens features the same quality found in 35mm and broadcast TV cameras, and the Optura 500 has a 10x optical zoom lens that delivers good definition and contrast as well as a 200x digital zoom. In addition, the lenses feature a unique spectral coating to reduce flare and ghosting, resulting in optimal indoor and outdoor shots.

The RGB Primary Color Filter separates light passing through the lens into red, green and blue color components providing similar color quality found in professional 3 CCD camcorders, yielding truer more natural looking colors. Canon's DIGIC DV signal processing circuit makes it possible to achieve accurate color for both video and digital photos. Since video and digital photos have different color requirements, DIGIC DV utilizes two different color techniques to maximize video quality on a TV and still image quality for print or computer display.

Shooting Video
With the high-resolution 16:9 widescreen mode, the Optura 500 utilizes the entire width of the CCD (unlike some systems that electronically stretch the picture vertically) retaining image quality and providing a wider horizontal angle of view that is ideal for creating a theater-like experience.A variety of Program Auto Exposure settings allow for easy, optimal shooting in a wide range of lighting situations. The Optura 500 is also equipped with Manual Audio Level Control, commonly found only on prosumer camcorder models, and a swivel grip and palm pad, providing maximum comfort when shooting for long periods of time.

Offering improved compression over Motion JPEG, the Optura 500's advanced MPEG4 allows you to record the full length of your SD Card in high-quality 325 x 288 resolution.

Still Photos
The Optura 500 saves still image files to Secure Digital (SD) and MultiMedia (MMC) memory cards (an 8 MB card is included with the camcorder). It offers a number of photographic controls that make it easy to get the right shot, including:

  • Selectable Focusing Points for bringing off-center subjects into sharp focus
  • Continuous Shooting Mode enables rapid fire shooting--up to 3 frames-per-second (1632 x 1224) or up to 5 frames-per-second (1280 x 960, 640 x 480)
  • Simultaneous Photo Recording lets you capture e-mail ready digital photos (640 x 480) while you record video
  • Auto Exposure Bracketing lets you shoot three photos-Ñnormal, underexposed and overexposed--with the press of one button
  • The Built-in flash with Red-Eye Reduction is perfect for taking photos at night, indoors, or filling in shadows
  • Horizontal & Vertical Trimming Function and Photo Review Function allow you to make edits directly in the camcorder
  • Stitch Assist enables you to capture and create breathtaking 360-degree panoramas
  • The Skin Detail Mode helps you take complimentary close-ups of people by softening details and reducing skin imperfections
Connect directly to any Canon CP-series Photo Printer or Canon Bubble Jet Direct Printer using the supplied USB cable. You can also connect directly to other Pictbridge compatible printers, and because the camcorder tags each photo you take with information based on Exif 2.2 Print standards, poor lighting and mistakes can be corrected automatically by the printer.

Other Features
A Mini Video Light allows you to shoot up to 4.9 feet away in total darkness. It can be switched on in any Program mode. For shooting close-up subjects (less than 12 inches away), the supplied Ring Light Adapter provides even illumination and prevents shadows.

The advanced Image Stabilization system works behind the scenes even when youÕre panning and zooming, shooting videos or photos. The Optura 500's large, high-resolution 2.5-inch LCD (211,000 pixels versus the Optura 400's 123,000 pixels) and color viewfinder helps you compose shots from any angle.

With the press of the Night Mode button, the camcorder automatically selects a slow shutter speed and increases the sensitivity of the CCD to brighten the image, while still preserving color. Two additional low-light settings can be assigned to the Night Mode button--Super Night Mode and Night++ Mode. When selected, Super Night Mode automatically triggers the white LED Lamp when needed to enhance the subject for shooting. Night++ Mode is used in the toughest lighting situations, keeping the white LED Lamp on all the time.

Connectivity
The Optura 500 connects to Macs and Windows-based PCs via a Firewire terminal (also known as iLink or IEEE1394), enabling high video and audio quality during duplication or editing. It's also equipped with a high-speed USB 2.0 terminal, which Windows Movie Maker2 supports, for video footage transfer and DV streaming.

An Analog Line-in/Out with Analog/Digital Converter allows you to easily transform your analog memories into digital, all in real-time. The camcorder also features a Network Mode, which enables you to remotely control your camcorder through the DVÊMessenger2 software application. Control the focus and zoom of your camcorder from a computer while streaming the video via its Firewire terminal.

What's in the Box
This package contains the Optura 500 digital video camcorder, rechargeable battery pack (NB-2LH), power adapter (CA-570), wireless controller (WL-D84), A/V cable, 8 MB SD memory card, USB 2.0 cable, ring light adapter, and Digital Video Solution CD-ROM, which includes:

4-0 out of 5 stars portability at a price
I print on the go all the time, and sometimes, at conferences and events, it's been more than a lifesaver. Printing good photos on the go seemed a natural addition.

Problems with this printer include: need really good quality paper for decent prints (consistent with Canon printers in my experience); Canon's warranty is lousy (and they have screwed me before with products that broke a couple months after warranty expired); photo quality is less than a dedicated 6- or 8-ink desktop printer; expensive inks.

Primary use: printing at conferences or other public events that keep you away from an office. Kinkos beware--this thing handles most of the jobs that I'd run to a business center to do while on the go. HOWEVER, without buying the extra battery, you're still on the prowl for the power outlets, along with everyone else in the room.

Secondary use: traveling, where snapshots of friends can be handed over while still on the go. I tend to travel light, so carrying a printer is a bit nuts, and the inks run out quickly, but sometimes there's no replacement for printing a photo of some new friend and giving them a copy while on the go.

Tertiary use: desktop printer. There's cheaper, faster, better alternatives for this use though--but it does fine as a backup (or when I want to print from a room without a printer without getting up).

My recommendation? Wait a little longer: the quality will only improve, and eventually Canon will bundle the battery with their 'portable' printer (instead of charging an extra hundred bucks to make your portable actually usable on the go).

4-0 out of 5 stars Good portable printer
The canon i80 is a good portable printer-not a replacement for a good workgroup printer or photo printer. I've had it for around 2 months now and put it through lots of use. In general, the quality is fairly good-monochrome printing is almost up to par with lasers. Color graphics are pretty decent-but remember that this is not a dedicated photo printer Speed is a bit slow-somewhat slower than advertised, but acceptable. It does tend to use lots of ink, and the ink cartridges are fairly expensive, though you do get 2 of them per pack. On the good side, the ink cartridges are easily refillable with any standard kit-but you will need to drill holes on the top after you peel back the label. It only holds around 20-30 sheets of paper and you'll need to fan through them before loading them in the sheet feeder or it will often pull in more than one sheet at a time. It seems pretty durable-I usually carry it with a laptop so it gets lots of travel and there are no alignment problems at all. My only real complaint is that I got it for its bluetooth capability. There is a dedicated bluetooth unit made for this printer, but it's not currently available from Canon or anywhere else I looked. I could get a universal, but that would defeat the purpose of having everything built in. If you're looking for portability, then this is the only way to go. Otherwise, you may be better off with a larger inkjet or a monochrome laser.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great printer
If you want a portable printer, this is what are you looking for. Excelent quality, small size, portable, no noise, good looking, and awesome!.

5-0 out of 5 stars Class by Itself
No real competition thus somewhat expensive. Fast, excellent quality photo prints even with generic cartridges. Comes with 120v-220v (to 16v 1.8a) dual voltage adapter. USB cable not included. IRDA. Excellent documentation. Somewhat flimsy feeling. Wish it were still lighter and smaller. Easy but seamful install.

update 08 Apr 2004: On more thorough examination, the generic cartridges made photos with a bit too much red, YMMV.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great glass!!!
What can I say? Yes, it's a bit expensive. And yes, it weighs about a ton. But the quality of this lens is absolutely great. If you own a DSLR like the D30, D60 or 10D this lense effectively becomes a 25.6-56 mm zoom. Which is great since there aren't that many high quality moderate wide-angle lenses available for these DSLR's. If used on a 1Ds or a film SLR then the 16-35 suddenly becomes the stuff that dreams are made of. This is one hell of a lens! If you are planning to buy a wide-angle zoom lens for your EOS camera and are considering the purchase of a non-Canon lens, don't do it! I used a few of those before buying the 16-35 f/2.8L USM and regretted it almost from day one. Yes, they are cheaper, but if you're serious about photography in the long run you'll end up buying the real thing anyway. So better wait and save up a litlle longer. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Solid Performance
I've had this copier for nine months now (a previous Canon copier had given us ten years of good service) and am thoroughly pleased with it. It has no warm-up time at all, the paper tray is ample and you can use a side slot to get a quick copy on a different color or type of paper if you want. It's quick, makes multiple copies, you can increase/decrease the image size, and it has very intuitive controls. Fairly quiet and fast as well. Quite a good buy, really.

5-0 out of 5 stars A good little copier
We use this in a fairly busy one physician doctors office and we have found it to be dependable. It's fairly quiet, and gives us good quality copies.
What more can you ask. Another good thing about this one is, there a good quality generic toner cartridges available on the web. That really is a plus when your doing a lot of copies per month, like we are.

2-0 out of 5 stars I would buy something else
My office recently purchased this copy machine. After 2 months of use the paper started to jam every other copy. When I called for service I got a HUGE run around and finally took it back to the store where it was purchased. They helped me figure out the problem and showed me how to "fix" it. It is a very temporary solution and I have to "fix" it every 3rd time I use the copier. For the money I spent, I would buy something else!

5-0 out of 5 stars The best copier out there!
We have this printer in our office for more than 3 years now and this copier performed flawless. I like the fact that it needs no time to warm up at all unlike other copiers that need about a minute to warm up before you can use it. And the speed is adequate for small office use, it is fast enough and makes very clean copies. It is also very quiet. I highly recommand this copier.

4-0 out of 5 stars Handy for Home Office
I purchased this copier 2 months ago. Setup and operation instructions very clear and easy to follow including installing the toner cartridge. Copies very clear and sharp. No dark edges on copies as I have experienced on another copier (Sharp). Copies come out smooth with no curls and are straight. I mainly use the copier for small quantities. Only problem I encountered was a paper jam when making 40 copies of 10 pages. This I think could be avoided if I had fanned the copier paper before loading. I have been using letter paper with 84 brightness with better than average quality. Copier is fairly quiet. It is a very handy tool and very convenient for immediate copies at home. I did not rate the copier a 5 star because I want to see how reliable it will be over time. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The best digicam in its class.
I've been holding out on buying a digital camera for quite a while. One thing I did know while doing research was that I wanted a Canon. I decided that I wanted a digital SLR for my artsy "pro" shots and a point-and-shoot for "everyday" use. For the SLR my decision was easy, a 10D (or whatever its successor is, I haven't purchased it yet). Deciding on a point-and-shoot was a bit more challenging. I didn't want to buy a point-and-shoot that was too high-end as I would soon be investing in an expensive SLR set-up. I was considering the higher-end G5 or the S1 IS. Honestly, the A75 wasn't even on my radar. Then one day the decision was made for me. I learned of an awesome deal for the A75 and it required that I act fast. I picked one up and immediately dove right into the user manual to learn all the capabilities that this digicam had in store for me. I was instantly impressed by all the features they crammed into this little 3.2 MP wonder, like the 13 shooting modes, which are much like presets for certain subject/scene situations. It has a large clear 1.8" LCD to frame and preview your shots. The 9-point AI Auto Focus will ensure that your pictures are clear and sharp. I especially liked the fact that this camera could also be used in a fully manual mode. I enjoy tinkering with settings to get the optimal shot of a subject or scene. I'm one of those who don't mind setting a custom white balance (BTW, there are presets for that too!). Overall, I am VERY pleased with this product and would definitely recommend this camera for users new to digital photography or the seasoned veteran looking for a good point-and-shoot for those family gatherings.

If you plan on purchasing the A75 I highly recommend getting rechargeable NiMH batteries. I own the Rayovac PS6 15 minute charger for use with their I-C3 15 minute rechargeable AA batteries. The ability to charge these batteries in 15 minutes has proven to be an indispensable feature for me.

I would also recommend purchasing an extra compact flash card with a minimum of 128 MB.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fantastic Video Quality ! Great Pics !, Which canon to buy ?
I wanted only canon after owning Panasonic, Sony & Fuji Cameras, Canon Simply does it great ! Menus are awesome & software is even better.

A lot of people didn't note this ! Canon has great video quality, with A75 you can zoom before starting to record the video. It beats my $1000 DV Camcorder !!!!!!!!!!!

Canon Pic quality requires no further explanation. Esp with Canon i960 printer, it is fantastic !!!!!!!!!!!!

1. I picked A75 over A 70 becos of bigger LCD, 9-point AF, nice very useful pre-set pic modes like indoor, beach, foliage etc.
2. I picked A75 over A80 becos of better video mode (640), less heavy, brighter/bigger LCD screen, cheaper.
3. I picked A75 over S1 IS becos of AF Assist Lamp & less purple fringing.
4. A75 uses AA batteries as opposed to S50/S60. Also, S50/60 doesn't support lens attachments easily. A75 costs half of S50/60 & produces equally good pics.
5. My next replacement will be New model that replaces S1 IS with 5MP, AF Assist-lamp & cheaper Memory card of 2-4GB capacity, for now i am very happy with A75.

5-0 out of 5 stars Sorry Mom
I just purchased this camera for my mom for Christmas, and I decided to try it out before I gave it to her. I LOVE this camera, it is definately the best buy for the money. The color is great, and it is light, easy to use, and the batteries last fairly long. My 7 year old son took some awesome pictures on the Auto setting. It is a great camera for non-professionals that want great famliy pictures and more. Sorry mom I might have to keep this one!

4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Camer for the value!
I purchased this camera about a month ago on a budget of $200 or less. I wanted at least 3.0 MP. After looking around and reading a few reviews I purchased this camera for $199.99 and have really enjoyed using this camera. I think it takes great pictures for the price range and options it has. <br /><br /> <br /><br /> I would only change a few things. For it to be lighter ( batteries add quite a bit of weight to the camera) and for the picture screen to be a little bigger and clear from all angles. I have to look straigt on to view or show the pictures. I would love to have a better close up zoom too. I agree that the action shutter speed can be a bit slow, BUT, I know I will have to "upgrade" to get more advanced features. <br /><br /> <br /><br /> I was bery impressed with a picture I took of my son in the dark using the night preset mode (I love all the preset modes, I think it has 15) and I couldn't even see my son in the picture viewer but I took the picture anyway. It came out awesome! Even when I loaded it on the computer, it still looked good. I even got the moon one night however, again, the zoom didn't prove to be strong enough for a good picture. But, hey, The Moon?<br /><br /> <br /><br /> The A75 works great for taking pictures of my son, vacationing and products for my website at a very affordable price. I would recommend this to anyone wanting an entry level, easy to use camera on a budget. <br /><br /> <br /><br /> It also came with a memory card, so that was a bonus for me not to have to buy additional memory. If you look around you can get this camera for $189.00 online and sometimes with FREE ADDITIONAL memory with in store specials. GREAT DEAL!! <br /><br /> <br /><br /> I also looked through the manuals that came with the camera and they had zoom lenses and waterproof cases that could be bought to go with it and the front lense screws off to add the lens to the camera. I am going to look into that to see if I can get my better zoom by adding a zoom lens?<br /><br /> <br /><br /> p.s. I helped a stranger take a picture of their family and they had a mid-range olympus digital and I was not impressed. It was lighter but felt cheap. So, knowing what I have and what I paid, I was very happy I had the A75 with me! :)

5-0 out of 5 stars The Best
One of the reason I give this five stars is because this camera is cheap for all of its features. I just bought this recently and the you can be as creative as you like! If you are beginning then just switch it to auto and snap away, but if you want to be creative, go ahead and mess around with it! The photo stitch mode is awsome and makes cool pics! The battery life is another great thing about this camera, it last the whole day, literally! But when you buy your memory card make sure to by at least a 128mb so you don't have to worry about erasing cute pics. But the 32mb card it comes with is a special bonus! I took 27 pics and a 30 second movie all on that one little card. One more thing is the movies. They're nearly as good as my $800 mini video camera. Anyway I really recommend this camera for anybody! Good Luck! ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Canon ripped me off
I am so frustrated with my Canon Elura. Apparently Canon Eluras have a structural flaw, and after a few months using it a message to eject the tape starts to pop all the time. Some people are even considering a collective lawsuit against Canon. The camera was great when it was working. But I am pretty convinced that the fate of 95% of all Canon Eluras after 6 months are the same as mine: the garbage bin. Just check all the online reviews. If you want a "perishable" good, then go ahead and buy your Elura. If you want a "durable" good, I would recommend you a Sony. It lasts for decades. I read the bad reviews about the Canon Elura 85 and decided to spend several hundred dollars on one. I Lost my money and my camera after a few months (Canon warranty and factory service are a joke). I took my chances. Would you take yours?

3-0 out of 5 stars Good camcorder but ........
I bought this camcorder recently and I am satisfied with its performace. The only reason I am taking off a few ** (stars) from this product is due to the reason that you cannot transfer videos from MiniDV to your computer using USB port. It required IEEE 1394 firewire cable (Cannon does not supply this cable with the camcorder) and a computer which has compatible port (not common in many computers and so you end up buying a suitable card for your computer if you wish to transfer the videos). ... The Canon Pixma iP3000 Photo Printer delivers speed, quality, and convenience in a stylish package. How fast is it? It produces up to 22 pages per minute (ppm) in black and up to 15 ppm in color, and a beautiful 4-by-6-inch borderless print takes only 36 seconds (highest-speed mode, ideal conditions). Plus, you have the convenience of direct photo printing: simply connect any PictBridge-compatible digital camera or DV camcorder, and print. This PC-free process eliminates the need to be tied to your computer, saving you time.

But the Pixma iP3000 Photo Printer isn't just fast. It also achieves impressive detail and clarity as a result of Canon's Full-photolithography Inkjet Nozzle Engineering (FINE). This technology features an upgraded 1,600-nozzle print head that ejects precise, consistent droplets as small as 2 picoliters, for amazing photo-realism. This high-efficiency printer also uses a specially formulated black ink for laser-like text on reports and letters, along with high-intensity color inks for brilliant photos and graphics. Your borderless photos, from 4 by 6 up to 8.5 by 11 inches will have the look and feel of traditional photographs.

Canon Think Tank System
To help reduce printing costs, this efficient system has four individual ink tanks that let you replace only the color that runs out, rather than an entire cartridge containing unused ink. Plus, a unique low-ink sensor alerts you when ink levels are low, so you are prepared to just drop in a new tank when needed.

Features:

  • Up to 22 ppm black, up to 15 ppm color
  • Dual paper path with built-in two-sided printing
  • Maximum 4,800 x 1,200 color dpi resolution with microscopic droplets as small as 2 picoliters

Amazon.com Product Description

A compact scanner from Canon, the DR-2080 provides high quality color scans and fits onto nearly any convenient surface. A 24-bit color depth provides brilliant colors, while a 600 x 600 dpi maximum resolution ensures that even the fine print is clear and legible.

The DR-2080C connects to a host computer via either a USB 2.0 or SCSI-II port, and supports Windows 95, 98, 2000, ME, XP, and NT operating systems. Able to handle originals up to 8.5 by 14 inches, the DR-2080C still has a very small 11.7-by-3.89-inch footprint, freeing up valuable desktop space for other uses, while a weight of just 5.5 makes transportation a snap.

The included Canon CapturePerfect software provides a quick and easy editing tool for your scans, and sports a scan-to-email feature that lets you send originals directly from the scanner. Optical character recognition allows you to easily create searchable text files out of your scans, while a pre-scan feature lets users adjust scan settings on one page, then apply those settings to an entire batch scan.

Scanning speeds in simplex mode are as fast as 20 ppm, while duplex mode supports speeds of up to 40 ppm. The automatic document feeder lets you scan up to 50 pages with the touch of a button and supports originals of up to 0.2 mm in thickness. The DR-2080C also comes backed with a one year limited warranty.

4-0 out of 5 stars Beautiful little scanner
This is actually a very good scanner. It scans pretty quickly at 200 dpi/black-and-white OCR - it took me about an hour to scan in and OCR 400+ pages of class readings. I'm not exactly sure about the timing, since I wandered away every so often for a while. The duplex features are great - especially the option to remove blank pages. You can also change the threshold on what the software considers a blank page - it asks you to specify percent coverage, although they use a different term.

Complaints about this product that caused me to give it less than 5 stars:

1. As the last reviewer said, putting in the paper adjusters prevent the flap from closing.

2. It states on the DR-2080C's brochure (downloadable from Canon's website) that it is "Able to scan batches of mixed documents of different sizes, shapes, and weight." I took this to mean that you can drop differently-sized papers into the scanner, and it will scan it for you correctly and automatically, thus not requiring you to sit there and feed a stack of differently-sized papers one-by-one through the machine. I was mistaken however - the user manual says that you should sort your papers by different sizes and shapes before scanning them. When you do drop papers of different sizes in there, it will try to scan them, but the smaller sheets will be skewed and then incorrectly de-skewed.

3. Feeding stacks of paper into the scanner is a tad tricky - you have to wiggle it around a bit or the scanner will not be able to detect that any papers are in the ADF.

Canon also sells additional rollers so that you can replace them yourself without having to return the scanner to the manufacturer. If you use a Linux system, so long as you have a kernel that supports USB, a copy of VMWare (you can download a 30-day trial version for free) and a copy of Windows, the scanner works just fine.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great little scanner
This is a great scanner, and you can't beat the price. As others have already noted, it is better than some scanners costing thousands more. I love it's size, speed, and duplex scanning features. I do have some complaints though:

1. Installing the paper guides prevents the dust cover from being closed

2. The deskew and border removal functions don't always work as expected (they remove more than required, and you can't control how much to remove)

3. The bundled software is clunky and stupid (for example, you can't use the arrow or page up/page down keys to navigate through a scanned document). Ditto for the help files, although that seems to be true of most software from Japanese hardware makers; for heavens sakes, folks, hire some native English speakers! The software also has some bugs, e.g., it frequently has "file access errors" when trying to append pages to existing files. However, it is fairly easy to use, and is good enough for low volume scanning.

Some tips:

1. Don't adjust the paper guides too snugly against the paper; the automatic feeder requires some "wiggle room" to catch the paper.

2. Use the "Scan ahead" mode to speed up scanning.

3. If you're creating PDFs, get Adobe Acrobat (the full version, not the free reader) to manipulate your PDFs.

4. Set up custom paper sizes to quickly scan odd-sized documents like credit card statements, etc.

In spite of my complaints about the software, I'd highly recommend this scanner (in any case, my complaints are moot if you use some other scanning software). In the week since I got this scanner, I've scanned more than two thousand pages, scanning for a few hours every day (most of the time was spent organizing and ordering the documents). My big, ugly filing cabinet is almost empty...hurray!

You can get a cheaper scanner from Visioneer, but the ADF on that sucks. The DR-2080C uses an almost straight-through paper path, so very thin, very thick, or creased paper doesn't jam as much as with scanners that use a U-shaped path.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent for travelling
This unit is small and compact, yet has some very nice features. I especially like the duplexing feature allowing it to scan BOTH sides in the same pass, no flipping a stack of documents over. It works from within Adobe, and Microsoft Office Imaging.

It does have a drawback, however, the drivers are not Windows XP, and it can be a bit disconcerting installing them. I finished the installation with no adverse affects (that I noticed) to my 2 laptops, and a stand alone machine.

If you travel and need a high speed scanner, I highly recommend this unit.

5-0 out of 5 stars Outstanding Canon Quality
The Canon DR-2080 Duplex Color Scanner offers exceptional scanning for its small price tag. The output quality and speed of the DR-080 are comparable to competitive units 3 to 4 the cost and, in MANY cases, far superior to more costly units.

Although considered a "work group" level scanner, the DR-2080 will provide "Department" level productivity, limited only by original document size and daily duty cycles. Additionally, the DR-2080 comes with Canon's user friendly Scan utilities allowing very easy set-up and the ability to easily scan to a wide variety of file formats such as PDF, TIFF and JPEG.

The DR-2080's ease of use, superior output quality and reliability, as well as Canon's versatile, bundled software, will provide an effortless, stress-free scanning experience. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Much Enjoying
I recieved this camera for my graduation present. I really enjoy the little size and its capability. The digital effects that are possible to use are kind of neat, you can choose between easy and several different settings to be able to capture the best picture for the things you are shooting. It also has the ability to be transfered to your computer, which is nice, you can edit your clips. all in all this is a pretty nice product. HfHf ^^

2-0 out of 5 stars You can pass...
I bought this and owned it for two days. Its a decent MiniDV but you can do better at this price!

Noise was a major issue. The motor is just loud and it gets picked up in quiet scenes pretty bad.

Other than that the video recorded was of real good quality. But there was an issue with something going on when inserting a tape.It wasn't ejecting properly for some odd reason.I took it back after finding a deal on a Sony HC20 (that works a lot better/smoother than the Canon).

The only reason why I got this was because it was recommended by an Apple rep...well - this isn't the best MiniDV out there at this price.Panasonic has a fantastic MiniDV for almost the same price...I'd pass on this one guys...

3-0 out of 5 stars Okay for price - NOISY!
I am curious to find out if anyone has this model and the noise is not audible? If you use the LCD it gets worse!

The picture is okay, and the price is not bad - I wish I read the reviews before I purchased!

3-0 out of 5 stars If you don't mind noise
I recently purchased the Zr100...I'm pretty camera literate and knew Canon to be a good brand. Brought the camera home and was playing with...when I was watching what I had recorded I noticed a "white noise" in the background...even when people were talking. The motor/fan on this camera is so loud that it really distorts and videos you take...it sounds like an old reel to reel is running 5 feet away. I called Canon about it and they suggested that I play background sound while recording to drown out the sound of the motor...well that doesn't work for video taping school plays etc...I'm returning this camera...hopefully not all MiniDVs have this problem. ... 80. Canon Optura 400 MiniDV Camcorder w/10x Optical Zoom
list price: $1,199.99
our price: $999.99
(price subject to change: see help)
Asin: B0002H1KJ6
Catlog: Photography
Manufacturer: Canon Video
Sales Rank: 976

Amazon.com Product Description

Canon raises the stakes for all-in-one digital imaging devices with the release of the Canon Optura 400 (and its sibling Optura 500; see a comparison table at the end), which is as adept at shooting digital video as it is snapping high-resolution digital stills. Shorter and more lightweight than its predecessors, the brushed silver Optura 400 weighs just 1.2 pounds with tape and battery and measures 2.1 x 4.2 x 4.0 inches. It offers 2.2-megapixel resolution for fine video and photo details, a 10x optical zoom lens, image stabilization, built-in SD/MMC memory card slot, and PictBridge compatibility for direct printing of still photos to compatible printers.

Optics and Resolution
The Optura 400 has a 2.2-megapixel CCD, which produces 1230K effective pixels for video and 2 million effective pixels for still photos, for images up to 1623 x 1224 pixels (good enough for print enlargements up to 8 x 10 inches). Canon's camcorder lens features the same quality found in 35mm and broadcast TV cameras, and the Optura 400 has a 10x optical zoom lens that delivers good definition and contrast as well as a 200x digital zoom.

With the high-resolution 16:9 widescreen mode, the Optura 400 utilizes the entire width of the CCD (unlike some systems that electronically stretch the picture vertically) retaining image quality and providing a wider horizontal angle of view that is ideal for creating a theater-like experience.A variety of Program Auto Exposure settings allow for easy, optimal shooting in a wide range of lighting situations. The Optura 400 is also equipped with Manual Audio Level Control, commonly found only on prosumer camcorder models, and a swivel grip and palm pad, providing maximum comfort when shooting for long periods of time.

The Motion JPEG Mode records your footage onto the Secure Digital memory card at 320 x 240 resolution, giving you up to 60 minutes of recording time on an optional 512 MB card.

Still Photos
The Optura 400 saves still image files to Secure Digital (SD) and MultiMedia (MMC) memory cards (an 8 MB card is included with the camcorder).

The advanced Image Stabilization system works behind the scenes even when youÕre panning and zooming, shooting videos or photos. The Optura 400's large 2.5-inch LCD and color viewfinder helps you compose shots from any angle.

With the press of the Night Mode button, the camcorder automatically selects a slow shutter speed and increases the sensitivity of the CCD to brighten the image, while still preserving color. Two additional low-light settings can be assigned to the Night Mode button -- Super Night Mode and Night++ Mode. When selected, Super Night Mode automatically triggers the white LED Lamp when needed to enhance the subject for shooting. Night++ Mode is used in the toughest lighting situations, keeping the white LED Lamp on all the time.

Connectivity
The Optura 400 connects to Macs and Windows-based PCs via a Firewire terminal (also known as iLink or IEEE1394), enabling high video and audio quality during duplication or editing.

This package contains the Optura 400 digital video camcorder, rechargeable battery pack (NB-2LH), power adapter (CA-570), wireless controller (WL-D83), A/V cable, 8 MB SD memory card, USB cable, and Digital Video Solution CD-ROM, which includes:

  • Pinnacle Studio gives you every tool you need to easily capture video to your computer, edit footage, add titles, music, narration and special effects and then output the finished movie back to videotape, DVD or the web.
  • Pinnacle Instant Album can help you quickly organize your digital photos and video clips into interactive, high-resolution slideshows that can then be burned onto CD and DVD or watched on your TV with Instant PhotoAlbum
It's covered by a 1-year limited warranty (3 months for the video head part).
