2-0 out of 5 stars OK, but .....
I've wanted a Lifestyle system for several years, and finally found a system for less than...(it had been returned after one day and was heavily discounted). I brought the box home, connected the wires and boxes (very easy) and sat back to enjoy great bose sound. After several months of use, I can say that the system is OK, but not worth the cost (especially if you are paying retail). First, the quality of the materials is not that good. Cables and connectors are cheap and the music center is "brushed aluminum" - which is a nice way of saying painted plastic. Second, the system lacks features that are standard in other systems costing this much. DTS is a glaring omission. The system does not have enough jacks to accept all devices you may want to attach (VCR, DVD, cassette deck, turntable (a turntable requires an additional pre-amp). You also have to buy stands/mounting brackets (will cost another $120+). On the positive side, the CD player, radio and remote work great. Operation is a snap and the documentation good. The sound is OK. Not spectacular, but not as bad as some reviewers will have you believe. Bass is a bit muddy at times and highs are clipped. But the satellite speakers are clear and produce good sound in the mid ranges. I'm 46 and my hearing is good, but not as good as it was at 26. If you're younger or have 20/20 hearing, you may want to comparison shop before buying Bose. Sound distribution and crossover are a bit disappointing. Not the "big" movie sound I was expecting. Again, you may want to compare Bose with another system before buying.
Bottom line: not a bad system, but has average sound and many little flaws and annoyances. The marketing of Bose products in stores often makes it difficult to compare with other brands. Before you spend ...plus for this system (or another Bose product), I highly recommend comparing features and sound to make sure it fits your needs and is the best buy for your money. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellents Sound
We own a Bose Acoustimass 6 Series, which we use with our home theater system... we LOVE it! Plus, the nice little cube speakers are unobtrusive and elegant.

1-0 out of 5 stars Overhyped low quality speakers
Bose is a fascinating case study of what the power of advertising can do for products that are acknowledged within the audio industry as being cheaply made and technically outperformed by all of its competiters. Based on audio theories from the 1960's and parts of lower quality than what can be bought at Radio Shack, Bose has built an incredible empire out of poorly designed products driven by a huge advertising budget creating an aura of "Bose".

Consumers should do their research before shelling out money for Bose speakers. A google search will bring you to epinions or audioreview websites where you can find review after review, mostly negative, from buyers of Bose products.

The commonly accepted wisdom in the audio industry is that Bose makes low audio quality products and sells them at very high prices. In other words those Polk, JBL, Wharfedale or Infinity mid-fi products you can find at Amazon are usually higher quality at much better price points.

Compare the sound if you ever get a chance. Make sure you DO NOT depend on volume, in other words volume is a bad indicater of quality. Listen for the high and low notes and to the clarity of the music. Tough to do in a showroom at Circuit City or Best Buy, but even there the differences will show up. Bose attempts to prevent consumers from doing this by segregating their products away from the competition.

After this you might look at online audio magazines (do a google search), Audioreview (one word) and Audiogon. You'll find whole NEW world of audio products such as PSB, Paradigm, Vandersteen, Quad, Sonus Faber, ACI and many more who's products will put you on a much higher level of audio than you'd ever imagine. Usually these speakers are SEVERAL times more electronically sophisticated than Bose at the same price! What you won't find in these websites of magazines are Bose articles. Bose just isn't taken seriously by the industry.

Good luck and happy hunting! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Quality speakers at a budget price.
I have owned a pair of Bose 301 speakers for 15 years. They still sound great! They are hooked to a Yamaha A/V receiver that is conservatively rated at 85 watts per channel. I would recommend these speakers to anyone wanting a good pair of speakers without spending a lot of money for them. You can shop around and pay more for speakers, but why waste your time and money. The Bose 301 speakers are durable, sound great, look good and best yet, won't bust your budget. I would recommend these speakers to almost everyone looking for a pair! ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Quality sound that you would expect from Bose
It sounds good but understandably if you are looking for true surround sound it's not your answer. With this system you will get more of a high quality stereo effect. The trade off is it is easy to set-up. You will be enjoying your movies in about half an hour. This is easily accomplished because all the wires can be hidden behind the entertainment center.

5-0 out of 5 stars its worth the money

5-0 out of 5 stars Theater sound!! Love it!
The versatility of this system is wonderful. The system sets up the sound quality in your designated room with the CD that comes with it. I love the surround sound while watching action packed movies. I think it worth the money for the quality of sound that you receive. I love playing music on the DVD player. I relocated my stereo to my home office, since the BOSE system plays my music and sounds great!!!

5-0 out of 5 stars BEST Audio system EVER!!
This is the Best Home Entertainment System I have ever purchased! You absolutely cannot go wrong here!!!!

3-0 out of 5 stars If sound matters to you, there are better choices..
Pros: Adaptiq automated system setup; exquisitely tiny sats; curvy receiver/DVD player; multiroom capability; point-anywhere, radio-frequency remote.

Cons: Expensive; bass-heavy sound; no progressive-scan video outputs.

Summary: For those with limited space this is a fair system. But, there are clearly better choices available; Onkyo, Klipsch, and Paradigm, to name a few. But, if you must have a Bose, Dont forget the "tiny cubes" need to be accompanied by a rather imposing "BASE UNIT". Bose calles it "non-localized", I call it BOOMY. This channel separation should make for good delivery of highs and lows. But it is the lows that stand out. Boy do they stand out! The LS35 produces a rather muddy sound. This system also lacks progressive scan, a common feature even on far less pricey systems. Yeah, I know, Bose speakers are found in high-end automobiles, etc. But, the reality is, Bose sound reproduction is not the best available. After all, when is the last time someone was bragging about their "Klipsch system". Think, listen, and you just might realize that you can get alot more for alot less $$$$. Unless, of course, image is of the utmost importance to you in making a purchasing decision. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars clean bass, great balanced sound
I recently upgraded to the AM6 model having retired my AM3 (with different rear speakers). I have read other reviews on other sites that claim this system won't rattle the walls - well, perhaps the contributor did not set up the system correctly. Place the AM module (bass module) FACING the wall, about 2-3" away and prepare yourself for enjoyment!
I think a lot of Home "Theaterphiles" prefer the "boomy" or "thumpy" bass - well, more power (no pun) to them! The Bose AM6 produces the kind of bass response I really like - smooth, pure and without the boxy thump some systems make.
The surround image is a delight and one can fiddle with the little speakers to create an image field to suit one's taste.
All in all, it is hard to beat the quality and versatility of this system.

4-0 out of 5 stars Crisp, clean and high quality, but not loud enough
I was lucky enough to find the Acoustamass 6 system at Sam's club coupled with JVC amplifier/tuner for a little less than you would pay for both if purchased separately. Bose lives up to their reputation for quality sound, but I found the system to be lacking in sheer ear-bleeding amplitude. The system can be run safely (100 W per channel) at maximum volume, but it simply doesn't get as loud as I think it should. Otherwise, I have no complaints about this fine product from Bose.

5-0 out of 5 stars I had doubts, but no more
I had been leaning towards a powered subwoofer and larger satellites from other companies when my wife gave me the AM6 on the recommendation of an audiophile friend. I have not been disappointed. The sound is crisp and clean, and when watching DVDs the rumble from special effects is great - I did not think a passive subwoofer and my modest receiver could do this. Perhaps this can't rattle the walls like a hundred watt subwoofer but the clarity and balance is simply great.

The setup instructions are very good, and the single big cable with all the wires for the receiver made hookup in the entertainment unit much easier. Only drawback is that the subwoofer must be relatively close to the receiver (~8 feet tops). It's a small price to pay. ... Read more

Amazon.com Product Description

The Bose Lifestyle 50 listening system was designed to replace the appearance of a rack of conventional audio components with its palm-sized wireless Personal music center remote control, which is smaller than a videocassette. The system has other components, of course, but most are meant to be hidden from view. Tiny Jewel Cube speakers no bigger than a computer mouse replace room-filling loudspeaker cabinets, blending elegantly with any decor. A hideaway Acoustimass module (subwoofer) delivers full, deep bass for movies and music. The rest of the system--including AM/FM tuner, a full-function 6-CD changer, and the cables and connections for up to 4 rooms--can be easily tucked out of sight.

The Acoustimass bass module uses a technology that launches sound on a column of air rather than directly pushing air with a vibrating cone. It delivers full, natural bass sound without distortion--all from a compact enclosure, which can be located anywhere in your room (perhaps behind a curtain or under a coffee table). This means you'll enjoy the same quality of sound wherever you're standing or sitting.

The award-winning Jewel Cube speakers are the most visible components. The product of more than 40 different innovations and technologies, these speakers are about the size of a computer mouse, yet they're capable of filling a room with rich, lifelike sound. Their patented signal-processing technology automatically adjusts their tonal balance, ensuring your audio programs always will exhibit full, deep bass and clear, natural vocals at any listening level.

The touch-screen Personal music center, the heart of the system, communicates through radio frequencies, unlike infrared, sight-line dependent conventional remotes--so you don't have to aim it at other equipment for its commands to work. The remote's intelligent simplicity uses layered touch-screen menus to indicate and control functions such as radio tuning (with 50 station presets), track programming (up to 50 tracks in one sequence), volume adjustments, source selection, etc.

The Personal music center can control powered speakers positioned in different rooms (additional-room speakers not included). Or, with the purchase of additional Personal music centers, multiple users can simultaneously operate up to 4 different music sources--say, a CD player in the living room, a television set in a bedroom, an AM/FM player at the patio. For multiroom listening, Bose recommends its Virtually Invisible 191, 161, Acoustimass 5, or Acoustimass 3 speaker systems.

The Lifestyle 50 is also equipped with a digital signal processor called Videostage 5, which heightens surround-sound realism for both movie soundtracks and music recordings. The Videostage decoder processes analog formats--as well as 2- or even single-channel PCM and Dolby Digital bitstreams--and helps to deliver movie-theater excitement right in your home.

A feature called Digital Dynamic Range (DDR) compression automatically monitors and adjusts the system's level to let you to hear soft sounds, particularly dialogue, while preventing you from being overwhelmed by loud special effects. This is especially useful for late-night viewing, freeing you from having to constantly adjust the volume.

Dolby Digital decoding delivers up to 5.1 discrete audio channels (that is, 5 for the independent Jewel Cube speakers and 1 for rich bass from the Acoustimass, or subwoofer module) from DVD, digital TV, advanced cable boxes, and digital satellite receivers.

What's in the Box
Personal music center, a CD changer, a multiroom interface, an interface power pack, 5 Jewel Cube speakers, 5 speaker cables, 1 Acoustimass module (subwoofer), an AC power cord, 14 self-adhesive rubber feet (4 for the module and 5 pairs for the Jewel Cube speakers), an audio input cable, a CD changer cable, a stereo cable, 4 AAA batteries, an FM antenna, an AM loop antenna, an AM antenna base, a CD magazine, a Lifestyle system CD, and a test CD. ... WANT TO LISTEN TO DEPTH OF UNADULTERED SOUND? LOOK NO FUTHER ITS BOSE NOTHING ELSE MATTERS WANT A ROOM FULL OF SOUND NOT A ROOM FULL OF SPEAKERS WHERE THE MOST MINUTE SOUND FROM A CRACK OF A GLASS CAN NOT ONLY BE HEARD BUT FELT WITH DEPT

5-0 out of 5 stars Worth the green
Ok first of let me say this. If you are looking for a system that has THX go else where. But let me also add this, I work in the movie bizz, so I have a good bit of know how and what when it comes to things like this. THX, and you can ask a dealer for your self, is only trully heard when its set up by a pro, hense a home system that bosts THX, will not sound as good as it does in the theaters, this has more to do with room layout etc then the system.

Bose are masters when it comes to audio, short of having a theater built in your house, this is one of the best systems you can get for the money, it has all you need. Granted it could offer more but so could any system that you look at.

I have heard THX on this system and belive it or not it does work. Again not as well as in a theater but still its damn nice.

I recomend that if you are looking at this system that you go to your local high end audio store, and bring the following. a dvd that has DTS or the like encoded on it, 3 cds of differnt types of music, i recomend rock, classical, and techno. But the key is the difference.

Now sit down and listen to all of the things one at a time. Try this with other systems that you are looking at and I am sure you will find that the bose is one of the best out there.

Also look at onkyo and nad but you will have to by more compents and speakers to get what you get in this package. Adding to the overall cost.

Optical cables are a must, that or the best cables you can get. Also keep in mind that the rear speakers should be higher them the listners.

2-0 out of 5 stars Lifestyles of the Misinformed
What does the average consumer expect when they pay [this much money] for audio equipment? To be impressed, no less. Most people will be in awe when they listen to the Bose Lifestyle 50. They expect no less from a company like Bose. I, however, expected more.

My first disappointment is with the speakers. I didn't expect THX certification (a symbol of excellent audio quality), but the Lifestyle50 packs the same speakers from the cheapest Lifestyle setup. 2.5" paper drivers. Where does all the extra money go? The subwoofer is still passive instead of powered.

Then there's surround sound. It has Dolby Digital 5.1 (DD5.1) and Bose's proprietary Videostage5. DD5.1 is standard surround sound. It separates audio from front right, left, rear right, left, center, and subwoofer. The separation of channels provides a better movie-like experience and better sound quality. DD5.1 audio is the standard on DVDs. Videostage5 is odd in the sense that it divides the stereo signal into even more channels. The results are mixed, and often I wondered why it was there.

What it doesn't include is DTS5.1, or Digital Theater System. It is a step up from DD5.1. It provides much higher quality, but isn't available on all DVDs. When you find one that does you will enjoy it for every BOOM in the movie. It also doesn't include 6.1DTS, 7.1THX or any other features you would expect from a [$$] setup.

I lay in disappointment. I could get a receiver, speakers that at least had tweeters, and a subwoofer for one-fifth the price. Don't take my word for it. Go find a professional Bose Lifestyle 50 review with something positive to say about it. I'll go return mine.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good and the Bad
Bose products are usually expensive and some people argue that they can get a better system at maybe half the price. Now it depends on various parameters on what their evaluation is based on. For me, any music system is good which gives you the utmost pleasure in listening.
This Bose product comes with 5 pairs of Jewel cube speakers which are a little different then the regular speakers taht Bose offers with their speaker systems. They give you more clarity of sound - you can almost hear the fingers strumming on the guitar strings, the breathing of a singer and complete surround sound where it is available. You can easily find the difference when you play the Bose and another music system side by side and listen to the same music piece.
The set up is extremely simple. So if you hate tangling with wires and pushing in knobs and buttons for that perfect sound, then this system is for you. But if you are into graphic equalizers, and are addicted to lots of ports and want a receiver which will be the control center of your Home Theatre then this is not the system for you. The Bose system does allow you to connect your TV, DVD player and VCR through the system but that is about it. You will not find any additional ports in the system.
So for that price, I think you will not regret anything about this system - the most impressive of all is the size of the speakers and the range of sound that emits from them.
I am sure you are gonna love them. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars awesome clean sound from tiny cubes
For an above average entry into Home Theater, it is hard to imagine how you could beat this system. The tiny cube speakers disappear into the listening room and one can place the Acoustimass module out of sight (but pointed correctly - more on this in a moment) then the sound comes from everywhere!
Many people chastise Bose systems claiming the bass is not "thumping" enough. But maybe they are missing the point. Bass should not be 'thumpy' but smooth, clean and absorbed by the bodies of the listeners!
The trick to getting beautiful bass from this system is to aim the opening of the bass module TOWARD a side wall, leaving about 2-3" from the wall. You can adjust the distance a bit to change the bass, but you will be pleasantly surprised.
The bass is clean, without loosening floor tiles and with reasonable care in the placement of the 5 cube speakers, well, it is hard for my friends (and myself) to believe the sound that surrrounds!
Set up is EZ, with cables already in place on the bass module; you just prepare the connection by separating the twin leads to match the placement of the cube speakers, and you're done!
Set up your AV receiver according to the EZ 2 READ chart on the enclosed instructions and you are ready to enjoy Home Theater, thanks to this incredible BOSE system. ... Read more

Amazon.com Product Description

The Bose 3-2-1 DVD home entertainment system offers superb sound, elegance, and simplicity in an advanced home-audio setup. The system comes with a central DVD/CD media center, a pair of shelf speakers, a powered Acoustimass module (subwoofer), and everything you need to hook it all up with ease. Using Bose proprietary signal-processing technology, the 3-2-1 system provides improved spaciousness from stereo recordings and bold movie effects from Dolby Digital surround-encoded materials. Yet its few parts require little labor to set up, so you can enjoy your new system's performance right away.

The DVD/CD player plays your DVD-Video movies and CD-based music, including MP3 files written to recordable CD-R or CD-RW. Disc featuresinclude repeat and random play, DVD parental controls, forward andreverse chapter/track skip, and scanning within tracks.

The supplied shelf speakers employ Bose's Articulated Array system witha patented driver configuration to provide clear, lifelike sound and aneven sound coverage not always possible with conventional designs. Thistechnology reduces acoustical dead spots and lets you hear the fullfrequency range of music and speech from small and unobtrusive speakers.

In the Bose Acoustimass module, 2 downward-firing drivers give youpowerful performance for the lowest audible notes and effects. Andproprietary Bose technology ensures that you hear with clarity theproper balance of deep lows from all channels for music and movies. Hide the module almost anywhere, even behind furniture, and all the sound seems to come from the small cube speaker arrays.

Other features include AM/FM tuning with 50 preset stations (25 FM, 25AM), a sleep timer (1 to 90 minutes), and console input jacks forconnecting other source components (such as a VCR, DSS, CD changer, ortape deck).

5-0 out of 5 stars Bose 3-2-1 GS DVD
I was a little nervous at first purchasing this system because of some of the negative feedback I heard on other systems from Bose & the high price $1199. ABT electronics did throw in the $120 speaker stands for free which was nice. After I first installed the systems it did not sound as expected; but after some adjustments to the angle of the speakers and raising the bass and treble in the setup menu the sounds is terrific. As Bose states in their manual this system is meant to realisticaly recreate sounds, not overdue certain effects like many systems do. So far I have had great enjoyement listening to CD's and DVD's, Top Gun sounds better than I have ever heard it. The set-up was easy, including the stands it took 25 minutes and then another 30 min to understand all the menus.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Sound, Great Player
This is a great sound, you think how can 2 speakers have a 5.1 surround sound, well it can. I mean the depth, sound is rich in quality.

Pro's: Great sound, 3D depth, sounds like your in the theater. DVD player is a great player.

Con's: The worst con is that it does NOT support progressive scan out put, just regular Video cables, and S-Video.

5-0 out of 5 stars BEST SYSTEM EVER
I just bought this system for my livingroom. I use to have a surround sound system with like 5 speakers and the speakers werent that great and were everywhere in the room. This 3-2-1 Bose System is easy to set up and only had 2 speakers and 1 subwoofer. If you have a small to medium size livingroom this is perfect. Its as if you were sitting at the movie theater. The system sounds so good and is also a dvd player, cd player and am fm radio. Its a dvd stereo system all in one. Im so glad I bought this product. You cant go wrong with this one. ... Read more
