5-0 out of 5 stars Bose VCS-30 II Home Theater Surround Set - A wise choice!
For several years now I've enjoyed the use of these speakers, especially the VCS-10 center channel speaker which works wonderfully in conjunction with the receiver's settings to bring voices out and I've used the Model 100's as the front B speakers just to bring in some additional sound. The advertising here suggests using the Model 100's as rear/surround speakers, either way, these speakers are very good speakers and will work very well in whatever capacity you place them.

I've recently replaced all of the speakers on my primary system with the Bose Acoustimass 10 Series III Home Theater Speaker System and have moved these speakers to the secondary system in conjunction with a pair of Model 301 Series III speakers and another pair of Model 100's as the rear/surround speakers and have found this to be an enjoyable combination for this system.

All three of these speakers are magnetically shielded so you can go right ahead and put that VCS-10 right on top of your television set and it won't affect it any way. The Model 100's can be placed anywhere you desire to put them and Bose also manufactures wall/ceiling mounts for them which are very affordable and simple to install.

The VCS-10 Center Channel Speaker can also be purchased independently and is a highly recommended item for those, like myself, whose hearing just isn't what it used to be. This model definitely brings those voices out during those "low" moments in movies.

Overall, I'd highly recommend the VCS-30 II Home Theater Surround Set as it is an affordable solution to a desire for a quality set of surround sound speakers and serves as just another testament to the long history Bose and the quality that goes with that name! {ssintrepid} ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Very nice speakers!
Let me start this review by saying that I'm not an "audiophile" and won't be including any gibberish about audible ranges or anything like that. I just can tell when I hear good sound that I like. And these speakers produce that. Plenty of bass (almost too much, I had to turn down the base on my receiver) and beautifully clear mid-range and high notes.

Connected these Bose speakers to my 25 year old Yamaha 500 RX receiver and an old Toshiba DVD player. The system sounds great. In addition to CD and Tuner, I bought a cable that allows me to connect the receiver to my laptop computer, and now I get the best sound I've ever heard from all my Internet radio stations, CD's, ITunes, and games.

And best of all, these speakers are small enough that they don't take up hardly any room in my home office. Little cubes are on the side of the room and are not obtrusive. Acoustimass module shoved in the corner.

Only really down side I can see is the cost of Bose products. These are pretty expensive and you can probably find speakers that sound just as good for less money. But, I guarantee you they will not be as small and fit as well in your room. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Lifestyle Sucks
I bought one of these in Hawaii and it kept giving me problems..I changed the tuner twice. After I moved to Atlanta, it had to be repaired every 2 years..Often it would not play in my house but would play ok in the store..Very strange..I dont think I will buy overpriced Bose stuff again..Now I have a JBL unit which works wonderfully..

1-0 out of 5 stars Bose [problems]
I bought a system in Hawaii and the tuner kept giving me trouble. After two replacements, it ran well for about 3 years. Then it started becoming unreliable - it would play for a while, then shut off after a while... ...I am now abandoning it and looking for a new system..my recommendation, buy bose components but dont buy the whole system..its also not easily replaced piece by piece with other products..

5-0 out of 5 stars A great system
After conducting research into home theater systems, and checking out various speakers, receivers, pre-amplfiers, amplifers, and reading the trade magazines, I finally concluded that the Bose Lifestyle 35 is what I wanted, and after listening to it now for several weeks, I am very happy I got it. The home theater surround sound is awesome -- I have a large room with high ceilings, and the sound completely fills the room with no distortion. My audio CDs have never sounded better.

I chose the system primarily because of the ease of use, the small jewel cube speakers don't overwhelm my room, and the sound they produce is great. The fact that the DVD player is not a progressive player is not significant -- current progressive DVD players do not improve the picture noticeably. If you really want true high definition, even from a progressive DVD player, you really need a line doubler, which will run you $3,000. As for the lack of Pro Logic, that it old technology -- Dolby/DTS 5.1 is the future of surround sound, and in any event, the Bose system will convert any movie into surround sound, so Pro Logic isn't necessary.

4-0 out of 5 stars A great system with one big flaw.
The sound produced is wonderful, the system is well thought through and delivers a full rich sound, by taking the bass out of the individual speakers and bringing it all from the "acoustimass" module Bose is able to bring amazing sound from very small speakers and the bass does not sound like it is coming from one source, but rather the bass comes at you from all over. Those of you like me, with small children in the house will appreciate the clarity of sound at lower volumes as well, another feature Bose attributes to the small speakers and separate bass.

But I mentioned a flaw:

The DVD player is not good enough for the system. For this money and for people who are looking to build a top notch home theater, not including a progressive scan DVD player is nearly unforgiveable.

1-0 out of 5 stars Stay far...far....away!
First of all I am not a very big audio file. But I know good sound when I hear it. When I tested the Bose Lifestyle 35 I thought "hey it's Bose...it has to be good". And it was...to a certain point. The Lifestyle uses the Accoustimast(sp?) speakers and subwoofer, with a built in DVD player/CD player/mp3/AM FM Tuner all built into one system that is upgradeable for life. Sounds like a good thing right? Well yes and no. First off I do give it semi-high marks on producing good movie surround sound. Maybe 3.5 stars. But this system does not have Dolby Pro Logic, or Pro Logic 2. It does use DTS and Dolby Digital, but I did not realize that it was missing these two surround options. Why is this a big deal? Well most if not all A/V recievers have both of these options. (For a fraction of the price)

Now why does my 3.5 stars get dragged down to 1? Because the music produced through these speakers absolutely stinks! It is so terrible that I wanted to cry. Some of my best CD's were ruined when playing it through this system! (The sound that is) I saved long and hard for this system and I personally failed myself in not testing this system musically when I bought it. The speakers DO NOT produce any bass effects at all. It all is transferred through the subwoofer. A very bad idea on Bose's part.

Trust me you can spend literally 1000 dollars less and get a system that totally kicks this Bose system to smitherines. I ended up taking this back and getting Polk Audio LSi7 main speakers(700 dollars), Polks RT 25i rear speakers(150), Polks CS245i Center Channel(250), Polk PS350 subwoofer(350), Yamaha RX-V620 receiver (500), and a Yamaha CD-685 5 disk cd player(150). Total Spent 2200 after tax. And I could have scaled this down more to fit an even tighter budget. Search the web a little to find more on Bose. I wish I would have researched a bit more before causing myself this headache. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars BOSE - Buy Other Stereo Equipement
Bose has made a name for itself through agressive advertising at the expense of quality audio technology. Simply put, there are dozens of audio loudspeakers on the market that outperform Bose at a fraction of the price. This has been a well known fact in the audio industry and among audio buffs for at least twenty five years.

Unfortunately the mass of consumers isn't aware of the quality problems with Bose as compared to other speakers on the market. A few years ago Consumer Reports gave an honest appraisal of Bose speakers- ranking them very low. Bose sued and lost. Now all reputable audio magazines such as Stereophile or Absolute Sound stay far away from Bose products.

If you are really interested in sound performance and you'd like to stay on amazon.com try JBL, Polk, Wharfedale or Cambridge Audio. While not cutting edge audio, they'll deliver a MUCH BETTER sound performance than Bose could ever aspire to.

2-0 out of 5 stars Cannot listen for a long time without fatiguing your ear...
Bose is over rated in the mind of consumers due to their aggresive marketing stretegy. Ask any audiophiles what they think of Bose. There are other companies that make better spaekers like:

Wharfedale diamond series with kevlar cones
Paradigm
Psb
Tannoy mx-series
Polk Rt-series
MB Quart
Niles audio

Go with one of those, and you will be pleasantly surprised...
Happy listening to you all...

5-0 out of 5 stars Great - with classy wood finish.
I have the version with a black wood finish, but the cherry ones sound just the same. They look very nice on a wood bookshelf, appearing very hi-end. Confuse your friends by blasting some Wu-Tang out of them!

These speakers are redesigned for 2003, and I think the bass response sounds better. If you're on a budget, or don't need to rock any houseparties with your system, you could just go with these as your primary speakers. But if you want a truly awesome home theater system, these make GREAT rear-channel speakers.

Plus they give amazing sound for being a little bigger than a toaster. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Bose- the choice of naive consumers everywhere
Bose is a fascinating case study of what the power of advertising can do for products that are acknowledged within the audio industry as being cheaply made and technically outperformed by all of its competiters. Based on audio theories from the 1960's and parts of lower quality than what can be bought at Radio Shack, Bose has built an incredible empire out of poorly designed products driven by a huge advertising budget creating an aura of "Bose".

Consumers should do their research before shelling out money for Bose speakers. A google search will bring you to epinions or audioreview websites where you can find review after review, mostly negative, from buyers of Bose products.

The commonly accepted wisdom in the audio industry is that Bose makes low audio quality products and sells them at very high prices. In other words those Polk, JBL, Wharfedale or Infinity mid-fi products you can find at Amazon are usually higher quality at much better price points.

Compare the sound if you ever get a chance. Make sure you DO NOT depend on volume, in other words volume is a bad indicater of quality. Listen for the high and low notes and to the clarity of the music. Tough to do in a showroom at Circuit City or Best Buy, but even there the differences will show up. Bose attempts to prevent consumers from doing this by segregating their products away from the competition.

After this you might look at online audio magazines (do a google search), Audioreview (one word) and Audiogon. You'll find whole NEW world of audio products such as PSB, Paradigm, Vandersteen, Quad, Sonus Faber, ACI and many more who's products will put you on a much higher level of audio than you'd ever imagine. Usually these speakers are SEVERAL times more electronically sophisticated than Bose at the same price! What you won't find in these websites of magazines are Bose articles. Bose just isn't taken seriously by the industry.

Good luck and happy hunting!

5-0 out of 5 stars Bose AM10 Series III Speaker System - Absolutely incredible!
Unbelievable and incredible are just two of the words that can only begin to describe the superb clarity, depth and range of sound the Bose Acoustimass 10 Series III Home Theater Speaker System delivers to your home theater! For years now, I've been using Bose 401's, 301's and the VCS-30 Series II Home Theater Surround set to bring that theater feeling into my home and have been proud and satisfied with the performance of these speakers but, after installing the Bose Acoustimass I had absolutely no idea what I was missing.

As part of the VCS-30 Series II Home Theater Surround set, the VCS10 Center Channel speaker provides a great addition to the home theater in so much as bringing voices out to the listener but it doesn't even come close to the clarity delivered by the center channel portion of the Bose Acoustimass 10 Series III. With this system, for the first time, I was able to hear everything that was being said on the screen without having to either roll back the DVD a bit or turn on the text function, making this purchase all that much more worth the price.

What's more incredible about this system is that despite the speakers being mounted on the wall several feet above the television set, the voices coming from the center channel sound as if they're coming directly from the television set.

The bass module, where everything connects to prior to connecting to your receiver, is a true wonder, in and of itself, delivering true bass and "feeling" to watching a movie! What's more incredible about this bass module is that you can place it just about anywhere and the bass that is delivered doesn't even sound as if it's coming from the module but from the many speakers.

Another important aspect to this system is the ease of installation. I found it quite simple to install this system in conjunction with the Bose UB-20W Wall/Ceiling Speaker Brackets to get those beautiful speakers up on the wall where they could do their job best; delivering exceptional sound.

If you do not wish to install wall/ceiling mounts, fear not, Bose has already considered this. All of the speakers are magnetically shielded so you can just about place them anywhere you wish. Bose also manufactures floor speaker stands for a modest price and they even have the UTS-20 Universal Table Stands that are quite reasonably priced as well.

In short, this system is truly wonderful and I would highly recommend it to anybody that is looking for a superior home theater speaker system without wishing to spend in excess of a thousand dollars! Once you've made the decision to purchase and install this system, be prepared to be blown away by the superior quality of the beautiful sound. This system is a true investment that will easily defray the initial costs. {ssintrepid} ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Love the sound and size, Picture Quality VERY POOR
Hi tec buffs out there. I have had my lifestiles 35 up and running for just over a week now. I do love the sound and I dont complane about midrange of base or anything on the sound of the 35s.just SUPPER HAPPY WITH THAT! I also realy enjoy the size and how they look in my celing and walls. Now for the bad part! The DVD player built in the media center is poor quality. its old tecnoligy. it has realy only a place for S vedio to transfer the vidio signel with. It comes with a special cross over wire that SHOULD let you step up the S vidio to Y COMPONET. I used this crossover wire and got signel drop out from time to time watching a DVD movie. the screen would go black for split seconds at a time. Bose replaced my cross over wire pluse the Media center in hopes of releving the problem but NO LUCK! the black screen continued. I then droped it down to the straight S vidio conection ( NOT USING CROSS OVER WIRE) and it played with no DROP OUT! The problem is in the crossing over from S vidio to Y componet I gess. BUT even when its playing fine I feel the picture quality on the DVDS is poor. It does NOT have progressive scan and I felt it was granney and a bit dark of a picture. I should tell you at the same time I set up the Lifestiles 35 I allso set up a brand new DLP 56" Gateway TV. so all in this system is brand new. Well I did NOT want to give up the sound quality and size of this system so I had to go out and buy the Samsung DVD-HD931. it has TRUE Y componet conection but better than that it has the NEW and IMPROVED DVI conection! My new Gateway 56" DLP has DVI also. I hooked up the new DVD player using the Y componte conections in the same input on my TV to prove witch one was casuing the black screen! There was NO signel drop out NO black screen with the Samsung in the Y componet input on my new gateway DLP TV, NOW I can say for sure the problem is in the Bose or cross over whire to use the Y componet. ( rember I said before, drop it down to s vidio on the media center and it will play with no black screens outs) well hope this helps you Bill ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Uncomparable Sound Quality
To buy this 3-2-1 system at such a price, you ....
have been waiting to buy a Bose all your life
know that Bose is the best in Sound Technology
like simplicity and want the minimum features on your remote
like the minimum of pieces in your home theater with the topmost sound quality
do not want to be bothered with joining 20 wires at 40 places

....if you are like that ...just like me..then go for it.
I first bought a sony dreamsystem a day earlier came home, got first of all depressed on seeing the 7/8/9 pieces and scratched my head on how was i gonna arrange so many pieces in my not so big living room, then the wires to be attached and so on plus the system didnot play mp3s and cd-rs.
Not a Bose...just a 4 piece set and dare i say much better in sound quality than the sony or any other equivalent. The system offers surrond sound from 2 speakers (where others need 3 to 4) , a subwoofer, and the main sleek system. The features on the remote are minimum and that's another thing i liked. I don't need the massive programming stuff on the remote which i won't use ever. Its so simple that the remote doesn't have even a open/close function for the dvd - which is very logical considering you will used that feature only if you are going to place in or remove your dvd from the player, so its built on the system itself instead of the remote. Surround sound is perfect and is much much better than any other system. If you looking for sounds which should come from your back side or wherever then this system is not for you. The speaker very efficiently cover the right, left and center sound effects - so much that at many times while playing a dvd we were looking towards our left and right thinking someone or something had actually made a noise there.
And unlike the Sony dreamcase where you had wires to push in the speaker holes (very amatuerish) whereas here in Bose you have actual plug ins in the speakers !!
For the previous reviews which didn't like this system i would say it was unfortunate they must have picked up a wrong piece which may have defects.
Taking a star off for the price - but honestly that's the first time I saw Bose offering something at this level.
You can get similar systems at half the price maybe, but Bose is Bose, sound quality couldn't get any better than this...

4-0 out of 5 stars Easy to setup and use, good sound, but not true surround
Bose promotes this system as simple to setup and use. It is. But, the system is not perfect and it is not true surround.

First, it IS very easy to setup. The system includes only three cables. Power cord goes to Bass Module (not a true subwoofer -- I think the crossover might be higher), 25-pin serial cable goes from subwoofer to Preamp/tuner/DVD-CD unit, 9-pin serial cable goes from Preamp/tuner/DVD-CD and splits in half to connect to Left and Right satellite speakers via a proprietary 4-pin left-right-keyed connector.

However, if you have any other components -- like a TV -- you aren't done here and you can still wind up with a spider-web of cables behind your furniture. I was disappointed that the system included only an RCA video cable and didn't come with an S-Video cable. Be sure to buy an S-Video cable for $ 25 or so when you buy this system.

Second, it is very easy to use. The remote is simple without a lot of extra buttons. The on-screen display is simple and effective. Buttons for major functions are on the top of the Preamp/tuner/DVD-CD module.

Unfortunately, the remote only works with the 3-2-1 system and won't control any other components. And, Bose told me that there are no Universal Remotes preprogrammed with 3-2-1 codes. So you'll have to go out and buy a Learning Remote for $ 40 or more to control all of your components with a single remote. The lack of control for other devices does contribute to keeping the Bose remote uncluttered and simple. Note: another reviewer complained that the Eject button on the remote doesn't work. Well, there isn't an eject button on the remote. Besides, why would you want one? You have to go up to the unit to insert or remove a disc anyway.

Third, the Bose 3-2-1 sounds pretty good. Have you gone to the store and checked out Surround Sound systems available for about $ 1,000? They are all pretty bad: flimsy, ugly, distorted, poor user interfaces. I don't think you will find a Home-Theater-In-a-Box system that sounds better at this price.

And, you won't find a Home-Theater-In-a-Box system at any price that is this easy to setup. You could approximate the ease of setup if you go out and buy a stereo receiver, a DVD player, a subwoofer, bookshelf speakers, and cables for the same price, but you wouldn't have the on-screen system display or the ease-of-use. If you want a 5.1 surround system that sounds as good and has an on-screen display you are going to spend about twice as much.

You do lose out on surround sound with the 3-2-1. This is the 3-2-1's biggest drawback. I think that the satellite speakers each contain a pair of speakers: Center channel directed toward the center, rear surround directed toward the outside, front channels directed both to the center and to the outside. This is a whole heck of a lot better than matrix-surround from a stereo, but can't match the effect from five separate satellite speakers.

Many reviewers complain that the system doesn't play very loud. I think this is untrue. The volume control setting is a little non-standard though. On most other receivers, maximum volume is achieved by the time you've turned the knob about halfway--anything beyond halfway is just distortion. On the Bose, the system tops out at 100, so at 50 - where most people are used to topping out - the Bose still has plenty of room to crank up. I can hear the system just fine at 25 - 35 at night when the kids are trying to sleep and it sounds really good - and loud - at about 60 when everyone in the house is awake.

Don't buy this system if you want to fiddle around fine-tuning your gadgets, if you want to run wires everywhere, or if you want true 5.1 surround sound.

Buy this system if you want one that is easy to setup, easy to use, doesn't require you to run wires from the front of your room to the back, and sounds very good.

1-0 out of 5 stars broke twice!!!
I bought this 18 months ago and while I had some problems with the set up, I got help from the store where I bought it. It has really nice sound, but it has a serious problem: not once but TWICE, when my children inserted DVDs in the player they would NOT eject! Since no one could service it locally (I went to 3 places, and each claimed they could fix it but then later admitted they couldn't since they would have had to open it up), I had to send it to Bose. That cost a lot, plus Bose charges a minimum of about $240 (I forget the exact amount) to even look at it. Now, the exact same thing has happened (this is the second episode)! They say you can repair this easily but I went through the recommended procedures with a Bose technician over the phone and it didn't work. There's NO WAY I'm sending this machine back to them; I'm getting something else! Any recommendations? Finally, lest you think the kids are somehow to blame, let me note that they work daily with other DVDs, CD-roms, CD players, and personal computers and have never had any problems with any of them. I normally don't like having to pay extra for a warranty, but if you insist on getting this product, I'd recommend buying it from a place that sells it with a warranty.

5-0 out of 5 stars True Bose Quality
Don't be scared by all those bad reviews - I can truly praise this 3-2-1 system all the way! It is simple to setup, sounds as if you are at the movie theater, and works without any problems. Nothing in or below this price range compares, and you certainly won't find anything easier to setup and enjoy in minutes. I am very statisfied with this system and can only recommend it. Sure, it is not a true surround sound, but I guarantee you it will put some true surround system to shame with its clarity, deep and precise sound.

1-0 out of 5 stars Bose- a foolish purchase
Bose, a company whose advertising budget outspends it's research.

I build loudspeakers as a hobby of sorts. While I'm not an engineer I'm well acquainted with the standards of loudspeaker construction: crossovers, drivers, enclosures, etc. I also attend more than a few electronics shows. One thing seems common, Bose is held in virtual contempt by the audio industry and its enthusiasts.

I had a pair of old 301s that I tore apart. Amazing, it contained paper woofers of incredibly mediocre quality and a crossover that might have come out of a 1970 era speaker. Add to this that of all the speaker companies on the market- from mass marketeers like JBL and Infinity (which you can get here on Amazon) to specialized manufacturers such as Wilson, JM Labs, ACI, etc- publish their tested specifications ONLY BOSE does not. Presumably to avoid the embarrassment of the Consumer Reports fiasco where Bose was shown up to be the poor quality producer it is.

That said, many refuse to face the truth- both the engineering and aural truth- and continue to have faith in the product. Suckers? They're born every minute. ... Read more
