5-0 out of 5 stars Simple Modem Installation
One of the simplist installation of a modem I ever had. Running Win2000 just installed the board and followed the on screen prompts to install the driver. Had it running in five mins. Would have to recommend this modem. Speed seems to be faster than my old modem blaster which findly gave out.

2-0 out of 5 stars Better Than Apple's Internal Modem, But...
This has to be one of the worst external modems ever made for the Mac. It is, however, still an improvement over Apple's own internal modem, in that, once the Best modem manages to negotiate a connection, it stays connected. But getting that initial connection with the Best modem is often difficult, and dealing with the necessary workarounds can quickly tire one's patience. After having consistent difficulties with this modem when I first bought it, I tried to contact Best Support, but I never received a reply. So, I returned it to Amazon.com for an exchange. After receiving the second Best modem, I had exactly the same problems, so I concluded that the defects I was experiencing were probably generic to the model. The basic issue seems to be that the modem often fails to initialize properly. To reset it requires that you unplug the USB cable and re-plug it, sometimes over and over, until the device finally responds. The modem has the same difficulty in both OS 9 and OS X; the only difference I've noted is that, in OS X, it can take up to 15 seconds after issuing the Connect command for the modem to actually start dialing. I've had to unplug and re-plug the USB cable as many as a half dozen times sometimes to get the device to work. So why do I put up with it? Because, as I mentioned at the beginning, once this modem makes a connection, it stays connected, which Apple's own internal modem typically failed to do. In that sense, the Best modem is just marginally more tolerable. It's just a shame that this Best modem appears to be the only external modem that's now made for the Mac. Caveat emptor! ... 3-0 out of 5 stars 56NET Modem Setup Problems
I purchased the Best Data 56NET Internet Sharting modem recently and now have it up and running. This modem performs the best of 7 different brands and types used for my setup. I had a incredible time getting the modem to dialup, due to some misinformation in the quick start guide. The proper way to setup this modem is to read the manual that is on the CD-Rom. Also the insructions to use the New Connection Wizard did not suit my liking. It wanted to treat the connection as always on, so I had to reinstall the old modem and delete the first setup and start over. The performace once setup properly is excellent. Getting to that point was very frustrating is why it only gets 3 stars in my opinion. No tech service available toll free. 30 minutes on hold. No email response in timely manner. Give it a try, but read the complete CD-Rom setup manual first.

1-0 out of 5 stars No Technical Support
The quality of the modem is good, however the documentation is not as good as it should be. The appearance of the documentation is impressive (many screen saves), but the troubleshooting section is poor. The manual comes on a CD that requires a visual basic driver to get started. The paper documentation that accompanies the CD claims there is a runtime upgrade on the CD that adds the driver. My CD (Vesion 1.0) did not have it.

I retreived the driver from the Internet because I had another system with a working modem. It would have been impossible to continue if this had been my only modem.

After following all the instructions carefully, the modem still does not work. Two hours on hold to the Technical Support department (toll call), three emails, and a fax (toll call) have yet to bring any response whatever.

I would not recommend this product to anyone who thinks they may need technical support. It is most disappointing. I am currently looking for another ethernet dial-up modem to replace the Best Data. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Worst Modem Ever: Piece of Junk
Once installed on a Windows XP computer, it would not connect most of the time, but worse of all it caused interference with my PCI video card. After installation of the modem I received scrambled color output to my monitor that resulted in a green streak down both sides and a red streak across the top. If it did connect, the modem on hold feature could not be disabled (my ISP does not support this feature). All incoming calls would drop all ISP connections. I would not recommend this product to anyone even if you paid me $50.00.

5-0 out of 5 stars A fantastic modem at a great price!
I was searching for a cheap modem for a Pc i recently built and deceided to take a chance with this one.As it was cheap and only cost me around $...

Modem was very easy to install and worked right away without any hassels.I did not even need to load the included software,i just installed it into the Pci slot on the Pc.Windows XP recognized it quickly and everything was up and working.Excellent!

5-0 out of 5 stars A Great Modem for Less
I previously bought a BestData modem with ISA interface because I have an ISA slot available on my PC's motherboard. The ISA one is very difficult to install and configure. I spend three hours work on it and finally I gave up. Then I replaced it with a BestData's PCI modem. It only took me about 10 minutes to complete the installation. There is no need to do any configuration. The modem works very great and most of time it runs with a connection rate @ 52,000, it's even close to 56K. I haven't try other functions such as modem-on-hold to receive incoming calls. I would like to see others reviews/comments on this issue.

1-0 out of 5 stars Piece of junk!
I bought this modem to replace my 5-year-old US Robotics modem, which still works great. Although Best Data is not a famous name, I thought a v.92 modem should be much faster than my old modem. However it is MUCH slower than my old modem. Even worse it often stops transmitting data seconds after connected. Today I put my old US Robotics modem back and threw Best Data modem in the garbage can. This Best Data modem is free after mail-in rebate. Now I now why it is free.

FYI, I use Windows Me. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars A Decent Modem That Works
I bought this USB external modem for a used Blue and White G3/450 which came without an internal or external modem. At the time of the purchase, there was only one other external modem I could find for the Mac, and that was made by Zoom at twice the price. I still can't explain the discrepancy in price between the two modems.

The Best Data comes with a USB cable and phone cord, FAX software, no on/off switch or volume control (this is controlled by the Mac OS), and is plain in appearance (grey plastic). In Mac OS 9.2.1, the modem does what is supposed to. Drop the 56USBP file into the Modem Scripts in your Extensions folder, select it in your Modem control panel, and log on. Best Data advertises faster log-in and log-off times and faster download speeds due to the v.92 protocol, but I have never seen these improvements. There seems to be little difference from the v.90 protocol. Note that the box says "v.92 Lite." I don't know what that means.

Many factors affect modem speed. According to CNET's bandwidth meter, surf speeds for this modem range around 38k via fastermac.net. Connect speeds with the Best Data are usually in the 44 - 46 range. With the internal GV modem in my blueberry iMac, I occasionally hit 48, as I did with the even more reliable and speedy Diamond Supra USB. The Diamond had the fewest disconnects, the GV internal had the most, with the Best Data somewhere in between but still on the low end.

While I was shopping, it was difficult to distinguish between models, and Amazon is not always on top of such things, so here is the official name: Best Data Macintosh 56K USB Data Fax Modem, SmartOne series, Model 56USBPMAC, controller-based hardware modem with five-year limited warranty. The box says Mac OS 8 or higher but there is a sticker that reads that the USB chipset in this modem is compatible only with OS 9.1 and higher. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Awful, awful, awful!
The Best Data modem is one of the worst supported modems I have encountered in the 20+ years I have been using them. Outdated drivers are sure to give you a BSOD on Windows XP or Windows Server 2003. Tech Support is a joke, and I have yet to find anyone else with any idea how to make this modem work well. Buy at your own risk.

1-0 out of 5 stars Windows XP? Don't do it!
If you like the color blue and the sound of your machine restarting over and over again, buy this modem. As previously reviewed- it DOES NOT work with Windows XP Pro. The latest drivers don't help. The enclosed disc is so poorly laid out it is reminiscent of a pig-sty. I expected this sort of pain with the old windows 95 days, but not with something that claims to be XP compliant. DON'T BUY THIS MODEM IF YOU RUN XP PRO!!

1-0 out of 5 stars modem blue screens WIndows/XP
I own this modem (soon to be "owned"). It works OK under
Windows/98, but when I moved to Windows/XP pro, the drivers,
depending on how they were loaded, would either result in
a BSOD or an unrecoverable install error.

The email technical support was worthless. They did try
to get me to pay a fee, with the guarantee that they would
work with me until the problem was solved. I'm not willing
to throw good money after bad.

I "solved" the problem by loading the generic 56K V.90 drivers
that came with Windows/XP. This works OK, but I don't get the
V.92 features I paid for.

Before resorting to generic drivers, I tried changing the BIOS
settings: AUTO, COM1, COM2, COM4. None helped. Next, I tried
reloading the OS, and installing the modem first, before loading
other drivers. Nope. I even tried a second computer (which
uses an Athlon chip instead of a P4). Same problem; BSOD. And
these were the latest drivers, from their website.

I'm convinced, rightly or wrongly, that their driver has a bug.
Maybe I should go back to Windows/98.

5-0 out of 5 stars works flawlessly
Seems to be your basic decent modem. No on-off switch, no external volume control, and no second jack for another phone. Other than that though, it's utterly fine (I can get great connect speeds).

want to determine what the maximum possible throughput is for your twisted pair? do the following:

1. go outside to the telco's customer access box (which is on most
houses these days, even ancient ones). open up the box, and plug
your laptop into the line you use for modem access (same type of
plug as always for connecting). before you can plug in, you'll
need to remove the existing plug, which is what connects your
house's wiring to the telco's wiring.

2. dial-up your isp and see what speed you can get. this is the max
speed without your house's wiring. in case it isn't obvious: your
house's wiring can seriously screw things up. i can get 52k
directly, and close to that using my house's wiring.

3. now put the customer access box back the way the phone guys had it,
and go back inside. once inside, disconnect all other phones from
the wiring & dial-up again. this max speed should be real close,
if not exactly similar, to what you saw outside. if it isn't,
you've got potentially a variety of problems in your house's
wiring, including but not limited to:

a. corroded connections somewhere
b. capacitance/inductance bleed-through, so to speak, on one of
your jacks (i actually had this - a crappy, unused, jack was
screwing things up)
c. etc.

4. once you've fixed all the above (which isn't fun), put all your
phones back on the line & try connecting again. if you don't get
the same speed as always (or pretty darn close), see a thru c above
(this time it's in one of your phones). note that phones do place
a load on the line, so don't necessarily expect exactly the same
speed as before. ...there is a real reason for buying a 2nd phone
line just for modem access...

some people just accept their connect speed as "god's will," or "the telco's fault". either of those might really be the case, but until you check you'll never know. and don't expect the telco to do all of the above for you, even if you have inside wire maintenance (they actually used to in the old days, for data-grade lines, which cost more, but these days...). ... 1-0 out of 5 stars Total disappointment
This is not really a GeForce 4 MX 440 chipset-based video card. I ordered and received a GeForce 2 MX 400 chipset-based card. Actually, it is Diamond Stealth's S70. I was so disappointed when I received it because Diamond cards' quality is terrible, and I had very bad experiences with this brand before. I wanted to return it but I received an equal card again. My conclusion is either details of this product are wrong or Amazon people are completely ignorant about the difference between those two chipsets. I've learned my lesson, I will never buy a hardware component from Amazon. Amazon is good selling books, DVDs, CDs and even some electronics. But when dealing with hardware, I would prefer to find a specialized store. Don't buy this card, it is not worth, there are much better cards in the market for similar prices, and furthermore the Diamond brand might be the worst in video cards. ... Read more
