5-0 out of 5 stars Ready Radeon
I bought this card because the Vid card in by machine was really getting pushed around by "MahJongg Master 3". The DDR memory that the G4-MX 420 didn't have cinched the deal. Installation of the card & newest downloaded drivers was a snap. Over the course of 2 wks., it's been great. Yes, this is only a budget card, but a VERY GOOD budget card. "M.M.3" is now fully under control.

4-0 out of 5 stars Difficult Installation .... but it is all worth it !!
Whatever you have read in the previous reviews is right. Installing this card is a bit tricky, but once you get it all right, it is defintely worth the effort and the money you put into this card. It took me 6 hours to get this card and the software working. I have included some very important points I noted while installing is card. Please take note of them so that you can install the card in a much shorter time.

(BTW, I have a custom build PIII 800MHz PC with 320 MB memory, Win 2K and a good old AGP 2X/4X ATI Rage Mobility card previously installed.)

1. First of all, NEVER forget to remove the previous display drivers !! Use the uninstall program that came bundled with the software for the previous display driver (EASIEST method). In my case, I had no uninstall software to remove the previous display driver. So, I used regedit to clear the registry entries for that driver and used the safe mode to remove the DLL files corresponding to that driver (NOT recommended except for a last ditch effort).

Remove the previous card (hardware) and install this card ONLY AFTER thoroughly removing the display drivers of the previous card.

2. When you reboot the system (in NORMAL mode) after hardware installation, Windows will display a "New Hardware Found" message. Allow it to install the Windows standard VGA driver (it will only display the 640 x 480 mode). Check the display properties to make sure it displays something like "standard VGA" or something related. (If it still shows the name of the previous display driver, go back and try removing the previous driver, until you get Windows to use the standard VGA driver).

3. If you have the software for the motherboard drivers, re-install the one for the AGP. (one of the recommendations on the ATI website, in case you get a blank or garbled screen after you install the new drivers).

4. In my case, the software that came on the CD never worked !! I ended up getting either a garbled screen, or the computer hangs at a blank screen. So, I went to the ATI website, downloaded the latest drivers, and viola !! everything worked perfect !! (Note: for some people, the CD-version of the display driver seem to work fine. Try the internet version if you have trouble getting the CD-version to work).

Everything else from here is a no-brainer. I installed all the accompanying software from the CDs (of course, all software EXCEPT for the CD-version of the display driver: choose custom setup during installation). I connected the cable TV co-ax to the CATV input and I got TV on my computer ! Better yet, you can preview all the channels (in the form of thumbnails) and click on one of them to watch it (how cool can this be !).

The remote worked just fine, though I still keep thinking that it an unnessary excess. Make sure that the USB receiver for the remote is taped to a wall or some open space to get better reception, instead of just letting it lay beside the metal enclosure of your computer.

I played the trial version of Age of Mythology, and I was impressed by the 3D acceleration features of this card. I am yet to try other games though.

Overall, this card is awesome !! If you somehow get through the process of installing it and getting it to work, you'll be definetely in for a surprise.

4-0 out of 5 stars Fast and Cheap, what else could yuo ask for.
Have used this video card for about 4 months now. It is very fast. Even by the standards of a gamer. Delivers steady picture on my 22" Viewsonic CRT @ a 100 mhz refresh rate, 1600x1200, 32 bit color. As I typesetter/desktop publisher who spends 8-10 hours a day staring at my screen, this works so well. I can't give it 5 stars for performance, because many cards are faster. If I could give it 5 stars for value I would because ... this card is about the best you can get for the price.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best Card
It is east to use and install best ever really and really good price...

4-0 out of 5 stars An awesome graphics card or older games.....
......yes very decent. Doesn't do well in the current games tho, and DON'T expect to be able to run future gamer's with this graphics card. It performs quite well though, it layed it's cards tougher than I expected. It beats out the NVIDIA GeForce 2 GTS, even the 64mb version. This is a worth it card for older games, but you can tweak out the setting's in today's 3-D games to have a good trade off between graphics and frame rates. But really? Frame rates? Who needs them? I got a better frame rate in half-life than I did with the ATI Radeon 9700 Pro I tested! This card isn't bad. It can just use more power and features. That's all. Gaining nearly 20-27fps in unreal tournament 2003 with high details enabled and at a decently low to medium resolution.(such as 640x480, 800x600, 1024x768). Really, theyre isn't any urge to upgrade to a advanced 3-D accelerator graphics card with mighty power without having to spend a big buck on a budget, do everyhing card pratically, or top of the line high-end. Todays' games only require a HW T & L enabled graphics card with multi texturing and single pass capabitliesi that's somewhat directx8.1 compatible. So what the radeon 7500 doens't feature programmalbe shaders, 3-D textures, and stuff like that, and doesn't feature fast budget, or high-end acceleration graphics quality, as long as you can play today's games at a playable frame rate with good visual quality and tweak out the settings, there's nothing wrong with this graphics card!! ... Amazon.com Review

A video card with 32 MB of RAM and a good 3-D chip from a respected manufacturer for under $100? Do you even need to read the rest of this review? ATI has a great reputation for making a range of video cards to fulfill all needs and budgets, but the XPERT 2000 AGP is a real piece of work. In addition to a heap of video memory and a Rage 128 chip, users get hardware DVD support (along with the software to use it) and a full version of the game Expendable to show off the capabilities of their new hardware.

The card uses a 2x AGP interface and is plug-and-play compatible. We had no trouble installing the hardware or the included software on our test machine. The bundled software includes several multimedia programs, such as a CD player and a limited video editor. The highlight of the package is the DVD software, which provides smooth playback with few artifacts when used in conjunction with the XPERT 2000's DVD acceleration hardware. Playback was still a little blurry, so this is no replacement for a dedicated DVD decoder card.

If you only work with 2-D applications, such as Windows, this card can serve you well, regardless of the monitor you use. At a standard resolution of 1,024 x 768 and a color depth of 32 bits, the XPERT 2000's refresh rates go all the way to 160 Hz. Bump the resolution to 1,280 x 1,024, and the maximum refresh rate is 120 Hz--more than enough to guarantee a sharp, flicker-free image.

As for 3-D acceleration, the Rage 128 processor at the core of this card is decent for gaming. The XPERT 2000 is capable of producing 3-D resolutions as high as 1,920 x 1,200 in 32-bit color, although that figure is well beyond the acceptable performance envelope for this card. We found its sweet spot at 1024 x 768 or 1280 x 1024 in 32-bit color, depending on the game. At those settings, nearly everything we threw at the card ran smoothly on our 350 MHz Pentium II test system, from Unreal Tournament to NASCAR Racing 3.

Image quality in nearly all applications was excellent. The only exceptions were certain flight simulators, such asMiG Alley, where smoke effects were a little weak. In other simulations, such as NASCAR Racing 3 and Jane's WWII Fighters, smoke effects were wonderfully rendered, so this shouldn't be a big problem. We remedied all the minor gripes we had with this card by looking at the receipt. It truly is a bargain. --T. Byrl Baker

4-0 out of 5 stars My best add-on ever!
My $599 PC plus All-in-Wonder simply made a perfect system for me. I can do video recording, 3D games, and dual monitor on Win98!

I would have given five stars for this product if its software is stable enough. The bundled software suite (6.0) has problem in many corners. Basic TV and video functions are OK. But things like closed caption are not stable yet. I hope ATI will fix the software and complete this awesome product. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Best deal for 128MB DDR at Amazon!!!
Beautiful, beautiful graphics...Half-Life looks like a totally different game. Overclocking is pretty safe, and it compensates for the slightly underclocked proccessor. And it has novelty value..., this card smokes all Geforce 3 and 4 MX series!
128 MB will last for long time, also Direct X 8.1 and all the goodies are in this card its a superior card

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent deal
Wow this is cheap! You can't find a retail price like this on Pricewatch site or the same one (offered by Circuit City) in Electronics store. And the best thing is that the shipping is free (and no tax for me either)!

With such a fast rendering speed and 128MB DDR memory, this outperforms many Nvidia cards out there, at a reasonable price. Plus, I didn't experience any installation problems or crashes while playing the latest games such as Jedi Outcast or WarCraft 3 -- cool!

If you are a true gamer but with a budget, this is definitely a video card to get. This gamepack Radeon 8500LE bundles with Half-Life Counterstrike and expansions (not sure if they are full-version). ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Not for Win2000 second monitor
I installed this video board for a second monitor on my WIN2000 PC. Many conflicts with drivers, etc. After a few days of research I found out that the ATI Rage 128 boards will work but this one won't. Hopefully this review will save you the trouble I went through. Dell sales people and even techies were lost on the issue and it took a week to get a straight answer from ATI.

3-0 out of 5 stars It was cheaper two years ago...
(...)I'm not sure if I was buying a new video card now that I would buy this one. It's fairly weak and wouldn't be very useful for anyone planning on doing any serious amount of gaming, however if you just need something to output a picture, this will sure do it. It is Windows XP compatible, so that's a plus.

3-0 out of 5 stars nice card flaky drivers
ati drivers tend to me a bit flaky. this is an old card

4-0 out of 5 stars Economy Upgrade
I'm still trying to get another years use out of my machine and this was a perfect option for that. I'm not a heavy gamer but it gave me some slightly noticeable improvemants in most of the applications I use that demanded a little better graphics performance. The price was perfect for the reasons that I needed it for. The installation went flawless and there have not been any conflicts with any of my system's resources yet. The price and ease of installation is why I gave it 4 stars.

2-0 out of 5 stars Not a good 3d card..
This card came with my computer.. I didn't keep it long. It struggles to handle any 3d video game. It gives horrible 3d performance and makes it virtually impossible to play games like Quake 3, Half-Life, or Unreal Tournament. If you are looking for a card you probably already have a better card than this in your computer. Try to avoid this.... ... Read more

The Radeon 64 MB graphics board features 32-bit color 3-D graphics, advanced 3-D technology, and an integrated T&L engine for graphic realism. Supporting OpenGL and DirectX, this card will increase the graphic quality of all the latest 3D games. The RADEON 64 MB includes Hyper Z technology for increased performance and flicker-free refresh rates up to 200 Hz.

The Radeon 64 MB features some of ATI's 3D enhancements, including the Charisma Engine and Pixel Tapestry technologies. The Charisma Engine provides four-matrix vertex skinning, which skins and blends the animated joints of a 3-D character without any distortion. Pixel Tapestry is simply a name for Radeon's rendering unit, which is able to skin three textures to an object in a single clock cycle, allowing for an extra level of realism with bump mapping, emboss effects, etc. Standard 3-D acceleration features include full-screen anti-aliasing, fog effects, texture lighting, reflections, and Z-buffering.

Play full-screen DVD video from your desktop with ATI's Video Immersion enhancement engine. This allows for adaptive interlacing for best-quality motion video and text with a minimum of CPU usage. This effectively eliminates the need to buy a separate MPEG-2/DVD decoder card to watch your movies. Get support for the latest 3-D games and graphic-intensive products, plus DVD-playback, all on a single board. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars stripped-down software, good basic tv functionality
I bought this USB version because I liked the ALL-IN-RADEON card, but I'm disappointed that the software out of the box doesn't have an 'on-demand' feature that my Radeon does (pausing live tv), and no video compression available for tv recording (no mpeg or mpeg2). This makes recording on a laptop inflexible (HUGE files).

PROS: It's pretty cool to have tv on a laptop! Basic tv functionality is good. Guide+ works well just as on my Radeon.

Curiously, on my Radeon, it shows "ATI TV v.7.1" on my Radeon, and "ATI TV v.7.3" on my TV Wonder USB. I hope there's a previous version with the features I'm looking for (or a downloadable update).

1-0 out of 5 stars Lots of trouble to install, still no sound
I tried to install this on my old computer running Win98 and it said that my graphics card was incompatible. When I got my new machine, running win2000, I tried again.

The first problem was that I had to uninstall the multimedia drivers that were already installed for my ATI video card. There was no error message telling me this, the install just bombed and I had to take a guess.

I finally got it to work with video but there is no sound. I wish I had researched this before I bought the card, because now I'm finding out that many others have had the same problem.

To summarize, the card is garbage.

2-0 out of 5 stars Had to send it back
I could not get it to work properly under Windows XP, even after downloading XP drivers from ATI's website. One problem was that everytime I pluged it into my laptop, I had to reboot the comptuer, which it should not have had to do. However, the reason I sent it back was that the sound would go out after a few minuets, and I would have to change channels to get the sound back. The picture quality is also much worse than a tv tuner that goes into a PCI slot, which is expect because USB cables cannot transfer as much data as PCI cards.
If you have a desktop, I would recomend a PCI tv tuner or one that directly connects to the monitor and does not need a computer to work.
It is possible that the sound and USB problems were because of XP compatablity issues. However, I gave this two stars because ATI does advertise it as XP compatable, and the poor picture quality was because of the tuner, not the computer.

2-0 out of 5 stars could not get it to work
no matter what i did i could not get it to work on my toshiba laptop (512m, 850mhz p3) running xp-home.

actually the video capture was fine, but the tuner would not deliver a clear picture dispite having the cable company supply it a line directly from the pole (ie:a new cable directly from the source itself).

an considering a standard video capture device...

just be careful.

3-0 out of 5 stars Does what it claims
Good product and I would recommend it to anyone who really doesn't like to open up their computer case and hassle with cards. However, I mark two stars off because:
1. Software is OK, but sometimes doesn't initialize the device due to USB driver problem or if you are running Windows Media Player concurrently.
2. The quality degrades steeply for resolutions larger than 320x240.
To remedy these two problems, the ViewSonic VB50HRTV allows to bypass your computer all together and use just your monitor. (RGB passthrough) ... Read more
