5-0 out of 5 stars Best cordless phone I've ever owned
I see from other reviews that many people have been disappointed with this phone. But I honestly think its the best cordless phone I've ever owned. Actually, mine is model #8200 (I bought it a few years ago), but it's the exact same phone they've just changed the model #.

Unlike the dozen or so other cordless phones I've gone through over the years, this thing is durable, has consistently good sound quality (I never encounter static) and a long-lasting battery. I routinely leave it off the base all day (and talk on it a lot) and RARELY does the battery run out on me. And here's another BIG PLUS: it's a comfortable phone to hold or craddle. And I love the compact but chunky size. I really can't say enough good things about this phone. In fact, the reason I ended up writing a review here is because I was shopping around for a second one to buy.

1-0 out of 5 stars Poor Quality
Sadly, this is the last AT&T phone I'll ever buy. I've just had too many bad experiences.

I bought one because it was inexpensive, small, and could accomodate a headset.

Unfortunately, that's where the good part ends. I constantly get static and interference. What's worse, it has started not working at all. About 25% of the time I answer a call, I can hear the caller, but they can't hear me. Another 25% of the time, the line is just plain dead.

I own two Panasonics and the quality is perfect... all of the time. And they appear to have worn well over time.

4-0 out of 5 stars It works well.
I've had it for about 10 months now, and it still works as well as the first day we got it. There are some annoyances, like having to pause for a second after picking up the phone before saying anything, otherwise the caller just hears "--lo?" instead of "hello?" And sometimes the memory doesn't want to work--have to hit phone, memory + # twice before it dials. Other than that, there's been no problem. Reception is excellent, unless the caller's is faulty. The battery has worked fine. And it works well with our AT&T 1717 answering machine.

1-0 out of 5 stars Disappointment
This phone was purchased after a history with wonderful AT&T phones, but this purchase was a disappointment. The phone is absolutely horrible. Either there is such static on the line you can not hear the other person, the buttons do not work to dial or to turn it on or off. It turned out to be a complete waste of money, being that I had to purchase a new phone to replace this inadequate one. I would think twice about ever buying another AT&T cordless phone.

2-0 out of 5 stars good looks, bad sound and reception
I bought this phone because I like my AT&T digital answering machine and I wanted something compact and nicely designed. And the price was right.

Now I know why this phone is so cheap; the reception is terrible. Everyone I talk to sounds like they're calling from a tin can. Granted, I live in an NYC apartment but my old Sony cordless was able to deal with that just fine. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Speakerphone blur
To me the issue was the speakerphone. The voice of the caller was blurred and felt overlapped. I called AT&T customer service and they suggested that I return the item. I am doing just that.

5-0 out of 5 stars Reliable, Conveniant
This is an excellent cordless phone, the extremely low price was just a plus. I needed something with a cordless module, but also a speakerphone that was clear and didn't sound like you were speaking through a megaphone. The reception is also unbelievable, I have quite a large house and this phone works floors away from the phone cradle! This product delivered, I full heartedly recommend it. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Not up to AT&T standards for reliability
Highly recommended (for the price) if you don't mind it breaking down after a year and a half.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great machine for the long haul
I've had this answering machine for 7 years, 4 moves, and 6 different roommates.It has never given me a problem.I find the buttons and remote use pretty intuitive.One of the best purchases I have ever made.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent product
Great machine!!Easy to learn to use.Easy to set up.Would definitley buy again!!

5-0 out of 5 stars A very good answering machine
Hi,
This is a very nice, simple answering machine. I have had one for a long time and it served me well. (I knocked it off the kitchen counter and eventually the impact was just too much for it!)

I have never found a better one than this, especially for the money.

5-0 out of 5 stars Works fantastic after at least 3 and a half years !!!
I did not even know I had this machine while reading the reviews and only when I checked the picture I realized that I have had it so long I had forgotten what brand/model I had. I think I might even have it had it for over 5 years !! This machine has never given me problems. Always leaves a clear OGM and records everything perfectly. Very rarely is a message unclear, but I think that is when the caller talks too loudly into the phone. I have never had any weird stuff going on with it. It always picks up and people never have to call back to finish a message. Nobody ever said that they had problems leaving me a message. I never have any problems setting the time, checking the messages or anything. Only drawback is you cannot silence the machine, but you can lower the volume considerably. Do not place in your bedroom. Overall, a truly great machine!!!! ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Phone keeps cutting out
I would not recommend this telephone. I have had the same problem where, during a conversation, the telephone keeps cutting out. On my end I hear nothing for anywhere from a brief 1/2 second to seomtimes several seconds. On the other end the other party hears beeping. I'm on my 2nd telephone from At & T with the same results. I can't use this phone!

1-0 out of 5 stars Poor Sound Quality
I have used this phone for quite awhile. The sound quality is just terrible. There is a constant echo. Do not buy this phone.

1-0 out of 5 stars Call Waiting ID Doesn't Work on This Lousy Phone
Very Disappointed! I thought this phone would be the "cats meow" with all of the features, and the expandability. Bought two more handsets after we bought the original base unit and 2 handsets. I think since day one, the call waiting ID worked 3 times or so. Had AT&T send us a whole new setup including new base unit and new handsets and the problem is still there. Just had AT&T send us our 2nd new base and the problem is still there. Wouldn't recommend this phone to anyone. This phone has many problems including poor sound, lackluster performance, just plain bad. Wish I could get my money back! Good Luck!

1-0 out of 5 stars Do not purchase this phone
I'd give it 0 stars if I could. I had the same problem with the phone cutting out as the person from Plainview, NY. I do not have call waiting nor do most of the people I call. AT&T was trying to blame the problem on that, but it must be something else. They sent me a new phone (wrong model) to replace it, but it had the same issue. I sent it back. Later, the original phone was unable to find it's base even though other phones worked fine when plugged into the phone connection.

1-0 out of 5 stars The Phone That Keeps Cutting Out
I was so excited to get this phone. It has so many features including a speaker phone on the handset which is great when someone puts you on hold.

However, from the first day I got it (and I've only had it a week) it kept randomly cutting out during conversations. I heard dead air space and the person on the other end would hear a beep sound. The person on the other end would think it was their call waiting.

So now I've driven my friends crazy thinking their was something wrong with their call waiting. Other than that the range on the DSS was great but the sound quality was a bit tinny compared to an analog phone.

I don't recommend this phone and am still searching for a phone with good range, good sound, that doesn't cut in and out. Is that too much to ask for? ... Read more

Amazon.com Review

Why clutter your desk with a telephone and an answering system when you can have both in one package? The AT&T 1817 provides an all-digital answering system with time/day stamp and remote control features to make checking your messages easy whether you're at home or on the road.

You control the 1817 with its 13 front-mounted buttons and three switches. There is also a single-character LED display and one LED status indicator. The slim handset is comfortable and easy to hold; the buttons are well positioned and accessible, and the feature set is ideally suited for remote operation of the answering system.

We had to consult the instructions to set the clock, the number of rings, the remote access code, and the outgoing message (which was cumbersome even with the instructions). Note that the instructions don't explain how to reset the machine to its original preprogrammed outgoing message, but we found it after lengthy trial and error. We were able to program the memory dialing intuitively.

1-0 out of 5 stars Useless
My less than a year old AT&T 1817 has earned my complete mistrust. Some important messages became mysteriously inaccessible on it while I was making arrangements to have some major surgery. More have disappeared since.

I will replace this ...as soon as I can find a reliable answering machine.

Save your money for an appliance that will do the job.

3-0 out of 5 stars Just OK
I experience a good deal of static while using the telephone. Plus, even with the volume all the way up, I miss parts of the message unless the person leaving the message talks loudly enough so the machine records all of it.

3-0 out of 5 stars Just a little sticky
The only problem I had with the phone was the sticking of the #4 but after playing with it the #4 works fine now. All the other features work great. Since this phone is used in my office, I would recommend it to anyone for the home or the office.

The price of the phone is unbeatable.

5-0 out of 5 stars Reconnect with life, freedom, and fun ¿
Every so often, I would actually remember to return a call, ask a question, or just say "Hi, I'm thinking about you" to my stepdaughter Gina. Distance does not really make the heart grow fonder sometimes it simply distances us from our loved ones. One day, after trying to reach her on ten different occasions I had this answering machine shipped to her as a gift.

This changed her thoughts from "You never return my calls" to "Hi. You called!"

The device is simple, easy to install, and does not require the plethora of tapes that older systems did. You do have to record your own greeting unless you mind the digital mechanical voice. It is not a bad voice, particularly if you like the futuristic machines R2D2 and C3PO (Star Wars androids).

I have noticed that some of the reviewers for this particular machine did not have quite the success that I have had. Unfortunately in manufacturing there are times when a lemon squeezes through quality control, but they can be returned. However, Gina received her gift at the end of February, and loves it. She has never had a problem. She knows the day and time a call came through, has programmed the nine number memory module for speed dial, and, since we live in the land of rolling blackouts -- California, has used the Message Guard feature.

This answering machine can also be used to avoid unwanted calls, because you hear what the caller is saying. Personally, I hate to pick up the phone and have a digital direct marketing service determined to sell me some product that I absolutely have to have even though I did not know about it before they called. These are the calls that are happily limited to no more than four-minutes, along with all others. I have discovered that 240 seconds is enough for any friend to leave their name, number, and a brief message. This also means that if I by some horrible quirk of fate I get 59 messages, I can just pull the plug and delete the entire data base . . . then "embarrassingly" state that my answering machine lost calls. Who has not wanted to do that?

You can feel as if your are riding Pegasus through the sky, and when you return to earth you can decide which calls you want to return.

This answering machine is five stars for:

* convenience

* ease of installation

* streamlined digital answering machine and telephone

* call monitoring ability

* excellent price

1-0 out of 5 stars Quality is horrendous
I have had this phone for a year and have had problems with Keys sticking and not switching from speaker to the hand set. I have had calls dropped when selecting the speaker phone and then hanging up the phone on the cradle. I bought this phone because ATT has been always reliable. It is just like the rest. Why can't someone make a decent home office phone? We can put men on the Moon.
