5-0 out of 5 stars Very good player and recorder
Before buying the Ondio, I had my eyes on the RipFlash Plus 128MB. I ordered one from Amazon, but had to cancel it because it was back-ordered and I hate to wait for more than a month. I am really happy for that decision. In less than a week, I bought this Ondio and now I couldn't be happier.

I have read reviews by others, and many of the complaints are non-an-issue thanks to the firmware upgrade. There have been a major upgrade in firmware 1.32b, and most bugs are eliminated. I expect other bugs be corrected and new features (such as WMA support) be added soon. The firmware upgrade is easy as a flip.

Features I like:

(1) Line-in recording. This really makes music conversion easy.
(2) Unlike other brands, recording is coded in MP3 directly.
(3) Easy USB connection. No software is needed, as the device is recognized as a removable drive. So you can drag and drop files between your computer and the Ondio.
(4) Sound quality is excellent.

Features I am happy to have although wish it better:

(1) FM (this is an bonus compared to the RipFlash Plus) has reception for only a few station (only those with VERY strong signal). But the quality is good. The reason may be that it filters out weak signals. Really not a big deal.
(2) Built-in mic recording is just OK. I heard others saying a preamplified microphone is needed to make decent recording.
(3) The carrying pouch does not fit the player very well. I probably won't use it at all.

The sound is very loud and the level is ajusted via the earphone instead of the player. This may be the reason that the battery life is only 12 hours from three AAA batteries, compared with 20 hours from 2 AAA. Too much a difference in my oppinion.

Overall, I am happy with the purchase. I also paid less for it.

4-0 out of 5 stars Ondio flash player - best small package available today
Pluses:
- expandable flash via MMC/SD cards
- builtin 128 mb
- voice record
- radio
- MP3 record line-in or radio
- 30 sec retro -buffer on radio record
- ATA drive in Windows (drag&drop files)

Minues:
- no backlight
- no power source other than batteries
- no rechargable battery support
- screen is narrow, which requires lots of scrolling(i.e. waiting) to see info
- can't access card and builtin memory at same time
- no quick access (1 button) to scan through pre-set radio stations
- quirky flash process that requires you to leave the updated firmware on device. The process hosed my device and I have to send it back. They don't provide a PC means of flashing the player, the player flashes itself, so if something is wrong with the player OS, you're [out of luck].

My email asking whehter >128MB cards would work in the player went unanswered but I still bought the player. I wanted something small and shock proof and expandable. This fit the bill.

Add in backlight and the ability to draw power from the usb hub, I would give it five stars. Manual is of marginal quality. Accessories are good. Comes with a case that doesn't quite fit and headphones that are dull but this is fairly standard.

I later found out that the external flash support is a little flakey. Songs played from my one lexar 128mb mmc are incredibily choppy or nothing is heard at all. Flash fit is very tight and difficult to manage at best. This aspect of the device is flawed.

However, the rest of the device works quite well. Really do miss not having a backlight available.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good player with some glitches
PROS: -ExTREMELY easy to use with windows XP. Plug it into the USB and a removable hard drive pops up in my computer where you can copy and paste files.
-Really Small
-Cool Microphone that works well
-Audio-in records from any headphone jack, and records from its radio

Cons: -Eats batteries fairly rapidly
-Case not designed too well (so cry about it)
-Navigating through songs and FF/REW take a while
-I've had audio-in recordings turn out warbled (long ones)

I bought it in August 03 and its a pretty cool player. It came with the stereo cable for recording, but I went to radio shack and got a cable with a headphone jack on each end so I can record from just about anything. I do use the included stereo cable for playing through my tv's speakers.

The sound quality is great.

Maybe I haven't had any horrible problems yet like the other reviewers, but I think it is a good product with the features of recording, microphone, USB memory, and radio.

Enjoy!

1-0 out of 5 stars DO NOT BUY!
Do not buy this product it does not work. I bought one as it seamed to have the most features for the lowest price and cannot wait to pawn it off on someone. You have to buy batteries for this thing every day, it eats through the most expensive brands in an hour, the memory is ample except none of the recording features work unless set to a high quality which limits you to about an hour of radio or an hour and a half of voice record time. The interface with a PC is a nice simple cord however good luck finding a way to upload anything. There are better products for just a little more, don't be cheep.

1-0 out of 5 stars Doesn't Live Up
Pros: Nice looking player. MP3s transferred from computer sound good. Headphones have volume control on cord. The voice recording worked good.

Cons: The 30 second "retro-recording" doesn't work good. After I downloaded and installed OS 1.31f (which a flyer in the package directed me to do) the retro stopped working. Unable to restore to original OS. Now when I double-click to start the "instant" recording it displays a message, "Checking Available Disk Space" (I have over 120mb available). Then if I double click again I get maybe 3 seconds retro-recording, not 30 like the box and manual says. If I wait for the message to go away the player goes to radio and is not recording, so the instant recording in the radion mode (as manual says) is non-existant.

Also, the case fit is very poor. It covers some buttons. There is a belt clip but it's secured at the bottoom with velcro, which won't hold up long. After the velcro gives out you'll have a good chance of loosing your player. The earbuds are a little uncomfortable in the ear. The FM Radio reception is not good. Slight movements cause some distortion even when close to the radion station. A regular set of headphones (over the head) seemed to help reception a little. You have to tune it to the station then back up .1 to get a clear reception. The manual is barely helpful. The software that came with it is not good. Never was able to transfer files from it to the player. Although it was easy to simply create a folder in MS Explorer and copy the MP3s to the player. Still, the software should have been more user friendly.

I would not recommend this player because of the sheer fact that it doesn't do what's promised. It's going back tomorrow. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Not what I expected...
I have an AV340 and this add-on product was one of the main reasons I purchased the Archos over the RCA Lyra A/V jukebox. Sure it takes ok pictures and videos in good light but...
- It is very slow to start up to take any type of picture. You need to boot the Archos, select camera or camcorder and wait for that function to boot - by then the moment may be gone...
- In the camera mode the annoying digital camera delay from when you press the shutter to when the picture is take is longer than on my 3.5 year old Canon Powershot S20. Shot to shot time is slow as it needs to write data to the drive, not to a solid state memory card like on a regular digital camera.
- In the camcorder mode, there doesn't appear to be a pause so each segment take is a separate file name. Again, if you stop and then want to start recording again right away, there is a major lag as the existing video file is closed before you can start recoring again.
- There is no tripod mount or shoe for a light
- There is no super low light mode
- The lens is directly exposed with no way to attach a filter or lens cap to protect it
- 3X optical zoom is adequate for a digital camera but pretty low compared to most camcorders
- The zoom is amazingly loud and will be recorded on your soundtrack unless you use the supplied external mic
- The combination is very large and cumbersome to hold

I thought this combined with the AV340 would be a great all-in-one device... I ended up buying a Kyocera SL300R Camera which boots in less than 1 second and can shoot 2.5 frames per second to the limits of the SD card (get 256MB) and does video to the limits of the card. Better, smaller, faster and not much more expensive.

All in all the Archos AV340 is a very cool device but the AVCam 300 attachment, while a great concept, leaves much to be desired.

4-0 out of 5 stars Nice Cam, but does lack in areas
The ARCHOS AVCam was a main factor in my purchasing of the base unit the AV340. I just recieved my Cam and I was impressed in some areas and not so impressed in others. First, it is a bit steep in price at around $200.00, but it is a camera and camcorder. I've taken probably 100 pictures already today, and when you hold it steady, and have the right lighting the pictures come out amazingly well. However, you shake the camera little bit or the lighting in the room isn't the greatest the pictures can turn out a little on the mediocre side. I was impressed with the camcorder part of the package though which you can switch to in seconds from the camera. It takes good videos unless it's really dark. You can make it lighter, but for the most part the videos turned out pretty good. A few of the downers besides price are it eats the batteries like crazy. I was actually kinda shocked at how fast the batteries drained. It's not instantaneous but be prepared to recharge the ARCHOS often if your taking alot of pictures or videos. Also, it does make the AV340 heavier, and the whole thing isn't that light anyways. Overall I would reccomend getting this if you have the ARCHOS AV300 series and the money to spend on it. Hopefully with future firmware updates and maybe a battery with a longer life this will become an even better camera than it already is. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars MiniCDRW
I ordered the Archos MiniCDRW after reading a review saying this device supported USB under Windows 2000. I was delighted to discover my order also came with a PCMCIA interface. I now have used both interfaces, the PCMCIA with my Pentium 150MMX notebook and the USB with my Celleron 333 desktop, both under Windows 2000. I have only limited experience with this tool, but haven't made a CD coaster yet.

The greatest problem I faced was figuring out how to get the drive open. There is a label explaining "Lid may not open until drivers are installed", but what it didn't say was "the READY lamp must be off for the drive to open". I'm not small and almost broke the device while attempting to carefully open it. I expected the lid to pop open by itself as many other drives do, this one does not. The fact that it doesn't is was probably a design trade-off to keep the drive small. Pressing the yellow button to open the lid toggles the READY lamp on and off after the drivers are correctly installed. The lid does have some resistance to opening even when it is in a state to allow opening.

So far I successfully burned a CD-R from a package of TDK 80min blanks purchased at Costco, used the delivered CD-RW, and a Memorymedia CD-RW from work.

I think I am happy with this product and gave it 4 stars instead of 5 because in two days I experienced 2 false write failures and the drive was difficult to open. The failures were false because the disk was still usable on the second try.

4-0 out of 5 stars It works for both Win98 and Win2000 but...
This is one of only two USB enabled CDR/RWs in the market. And this is the only one that come with Win2000 driver. Very compact and protable (size of a portable CD player). It also come with a very nice, full-featured CDBurning/UDF software from Ahead corp.(Germany) -- equal or beter than my Adaptec CDCreator/DirectCD 4.02D. The only issue is that the fail rate is higher on the Win2000. The reason is that USB is not a fast device and it needs CPU to keep it running. But, better than nothing on the Win2k platform for a USB CDR/RW. It works with my notebooks and desktops. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Jokebox Recorder
This is a piece of junk. I got it to record my band sessions. I leave it charging all week, and actually plug it in during our sessions, and it only works half the time. Right now I have it plugged in, and I can't get it to turn on. It might just be my unit, but this thing is pretty worthless. I looked on the Archos site, and I don't think there's much I can do about it.

Even if it is just my defective unit, the interface is pretty clunky. I can't imagine trying to navigate 15 G's and find a specific song. You'd be there all day. However, if it just worked it would be perfect for what I want to do.

5-0 out of 5 stars Hours and Hours of Music
This is a great MP3 Player. I've loaded it up with hours of music plus hours and hours of old Bob and Ray recordings. The best feature is the recorder. I can plug the Archos into my stereo thru the tape monitor and record my old LPs and tapes without having to hook everything up to the computer. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars 6.4 GB, too small!
It is compact and convenient to use, powerful as compared with those tiny flash drive. But there are products can carry up to 60 GB in same size. This 6.4 GB is way too behind. Not worth at all. You can find similar HD case for less than $30, and can add on Hard drive of any size up to 60 GB by yourself. easy and flexible. My recommendation is at least 30 GB.

5-0 out of 5 stars Take this for what it is worth
I don't use this for a laptop...rigged it for a handheld.

It works great. The performance is on the money and the price is great. Who wants to spend the money on those "girly" drive cards when you can rock with the Archos.

Check out there website...they make things that you didn't even know existed. Maybe they will make the first teleporter so I don't have to worry about car insurance anymore?

4-0 out of 5 stars Pretty good product
For those of us with smaller internal HD's (like for older laptops) this one will definatly make life a little easier. The performance is good although I havn't run any comparisons or benchtests or anything, I would say its denfinatly worth the money. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Good, but...
I bought this Jukebox with the idea of replace my other Jukebox 6000, my digital camera and my camcorder and to have everything in one unit. The MP3 is excelent, Video files converted to the required format are acceptable, but the quality of photos taken and recorded video is very, very poor.
Then if you are thinking to buy this Jukebox like a video, photo and MP3 solution, don't sale your old digital camera and your camcorder, because you will need it!!!

4-0 out of 5 stars Sweeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeet!!
This is probably the coolest gadget that I own. Let me get my complaints out of the way before I extol the virtues of this fine piece of hardware. 1. FAT32. Why not NTFS? 2. The camera is typical of any camera that attaches to a handheld device. Without proper lighting, your pictures will be awful. Best if used in sunlight. Not for use indoors.
Now on to the good stuff.
It doesn't take a rocket scientist to use this. My wife can do it and she knows virtually nothing about computers. Turn it on, plug it in and copy files over. It is that simple. Converting video is easy with the included software. You just pick the video to convert and type a file name in the destination and hit the start button. It is really not hard at all! This is mildly inconvenient, however, so I do it at night before bedtime. Wake up and Viola! Converted video. Of course the video out to TV is crappy. I don't think that this device was really meant to replace your DVD player. If you want to watch your AVI's on your TV go and buy a Video card with TV out for thirty or so dollars. This device was meant for portability and media on the go. Perfect for those long road trips, your doctor's waiting room, and phonecalls from your mother-in-law. The sound is great provided you have some nicer head phones than the ones that are provided. I must admit that I have used up most of the 20Gig but I have a ton of stuff on there. It's good for HOURS AND HOURS of entertainment. Don't hate it because you have buyers remorse due to price. Besides, IPod is twice the price for just an MP3 player. Love it because at least you have a protable HD, MP3 player, video player, camera, camcorder, and card reader in on small package. Trust me, buying all of this stuff separate can cost a fortune! ... 4-0 out of 5 stars would be five stars, but...................
If you are crazy about MP3 music this one is the best you can buy. Although you can also look pictures on it and even films this is not the reason why I bought it. Nice to have, but need to be??? No, I bought it for the music, the 40GB is great and in price absolute better than the Apple Ipod.... The extra feature using it as a extra harddisk is great. The sound setup is good en easy. All together great but It looses 1 star because the batterylife is not that great. Only to use with a AC adapter will cost 1 star. 7 hours???, I doubt it, it charges fast so that is a good thing but if there would be a possibility to use normal batteries it would be a winner forever... Still great too bad for the batterylife.............
