Rounding out the features of the Archos Jukebox Multimedia 20 is the capability to use its 20 GB storage capacity as an external hard disk drive using the included USB 1.1 connection. The optional USB 2.0 or FireWire auto connection ensures extra-fast data transfer to and from your PC or Mac.

The optional camera attachment turns the Jukebox Multimedia 20 into a 1.3-megapixel digital camera that can store up to 200,000 photos, and an MP4 video camcorder (with MP3 sound) that allows you to record up to 40 hours of full-motion video. It's easy to view videos and photos either on the built-in color LCD screen (237 x 234 pixels), or by using the included AV connector on any TV with composite-video inputs. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Great for what it is supposed to do!
============================================================
I know you know what it can do so here are some downsides of the product:

1. Battery Life - LCD takes up lots of it, probably get 4-6 hours unless you keep it off the whole time and let ur MP3's play. I recommend that you set the screen to go blank as soon as it will let you set it to save battery energy. This is the only real reason why I gave this product 4 stars instead of 5.
2. Manufacturing Defects - Paint eventually chips in back (no biggie for me-yet) And the black rubbers on the corner aren't properly fastened to the device (of course you can just push them in a bit, but sometimes it bugs you).

Thats all that really bugs me.

Customer service is great if you have a little patience - I've already had to send my device in for a backlight repair (my fault) and it wasn't too much of a hassle.

The screen looks AMAZING for its size - don't worry about it.
Of course dust gets in there sometimes - just get a pressurized aircan and blow it out.

So overall you CANNOT take this thing to the beach (cuz of manufacturing) but its very nice for walking/siting around with.
How else can you get your daily Matrix?

3-0 out of 5 stars Zen vs Archos vs Net MD vs IPod. Zen Wins!
I have tried out almost every conceivable large capicity MP3 player out. Hands down, for price, value, look, and durability, the Nomad Zen has it.

Here's my breakdown.

Nomdad Zen

Looks nice and from an American company, Creative Labs. Its easy to use interface, great sound, slightly smaller than the archos and a bit bigger than the Ipod.

Built in battery but dies after 2 years or so. No problem, according to the Creative Labs website. They'll replace it at no charge when it dies. And yes it has shuffle and such an easy to use playlist, including a LCD screen remote -- how cool! Battery life is pretty good too.

I found the Zen to be a superb overall value.

IPod

A great looking player built by an American company, Apple. The Windows interface is *okay*. The ipod is the smallest, and it has a built in battery, which when it dies, the Ipod is useless. Too expensive for a disposable MP3 player. Decent sound.

Archos Jukebox

A lot of features, looks strange, and a bit heavy from the French Company, Archos. Who needs a 1.5 screen to view multimedia -- a useless feature IMO. To change the volume, you have to go through a series of buttons. Why? Ridiculous. However the Windows interface is the best out of them all; just drag and drop in Windows Explorer. Sound is okay, it sounds flat.

Net MD

This is the Sony MiniDisc player from the Japanese giant, Sony. I tried out the N707 and N1. They're small, great battery life, and they look great. Minidiscs are cheap and they hold 80 minutes of music plus data. Minidiscs are about a dollar a piece, but can only hold 169 MB of data -- its major drawback. You have to use Real Player with the Sony MD plugin to bypass the stupid anti-piracy software Sony included. I own over 750 CDs, and it made it impossible to make discs of my favorite songs if one song was on more than one minidisc. To get around it, I used the RealOne player from RealNetworks. Price, a bit expensive for low capacity. But they are by far the smallest and look the coolest.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Product !!!! Perfect !
I brought this product from bestbuy outlet with everything include the camera, for lke 100 less then amazon sell, don't buy from amazon, it cost too much here, I do respect most amazon product are cheap compare to most but not this one, product overall is great !, music and pictureis good and ez just drag in, but video boy, take a wonder to convert those to the play to work, the free software is useless for convert go get avs video conerter, that work best and remaind much its origial size. camera is horrible i admit, only picture quality is very basic 1.1 mega, but video just horrible, with no light, had many problem with color, sound is hard to record it. head phones is pretty good, has volume control which is pretty rare, kinda comfort, look cool, is not that bad as other revieer said. Overall it is worth for the price, if u rich u might wanna get the new version of this.

5-0 out of 5 stars the most bang for your buck
I got this bad boy for Christmas and it is by far my favorite computer peripheral device. Do yourself a favor if you get one of these and add a firewire or usb 2.0 card to your computer. If you don't and you have a lot of data to transfer, be prepared to wait awhile...the 12 mb/s of usb 1.1 is SLOOOOW.

The sound quality is awesome with this device, and the video output of properly encoded material is outstanding. For it to ALSO act as a 20 gig hard drive makes sure that this product stands head and shoulders above the rest of the pack.

If you really want one of these, do a little searching on the internet...it'll be worth your time.

1-0 out of 5 stars Screen Stopped Functioning after 10 months
Did even last a year. The screen stopped functioning after 10 months. It goes all white. I carried it around with me all over the place. I rode my bike with it and jogged with it but was always careful to keep if from getting bumped hard.

The Hard disk is fine ... it just the screen is "burning out" or something. I am going to try to get if fixed but it sounds like dealing with Archos support/tech is a royal pain.

This is a big disapointment to me.

I have transfered a lot of songs to the darn thing and now it is a paper weight on my desk.

When it worked I would give it 4 stars. It was great a transfering my photos from my CF card for storage on long vacations. It played lots of music.

The interface was funky and there was no way to play just the songs in a single directory and all that directories sub-directories randomly. To play Randomly you can play just one directory or all directories .. no option for one directory and it's subdirectories, so you can't setup like a Jazz tree with all your Jazz albums down below and then play all your Jazz songs randomly from all those albums.

I'm wondering if this device is really ready for primetime. It was a great idea but now I am out 300 bucks. That really really sucks big time. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars A little cracker
I use this device with a Sony Vaio F801A running Windows ME.

It works very well indeed, no complaints at all.

1-0 out of 5 stars A great product if you enjoy ScanDisk
This is yet another piece of hardware that might be ok if it wasn't for pathetic driver software.

On an IBM Thinkpad 570, I can use the drive for maybe 5 minutes, then Windows spontaneously reboots and I see the famous ScanDisk screen, checking my C drive, and admonishing me to shut down Windows before turning off the computer. If you enjoy ScanDisk, you'll love this drive.

On a Sony Picturebook, the installation of the DVD viewer trashed the sound drivers (probably by installing some older version of Windows media support), and I had to reinstall Windows.

Unfortunately, the Windows operating system architecture and a sloppily written driver program conspire to make this otherwise promising gadget worthless on a Windows 9x based system. Maybe it'll work better on the Mac or Windows 2000. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Best buy for the money!
I purhcased this unit from Best Buy. I had a few problems installing the CDRW on Win98SE, but after a quick call to Archos tech support, they solved the problem. (I had the power plugged in to the audio out jack! DOH!). Since then I have burned 100's of CD's. I had read this was a poor choice for CDRW's but I really do not see what the problem is, unless others just had a hard time installing the drivers for it. All I know is I love mine. Thanks Archos.

4-0 out of 5 stars Size does matter, and simplicity is priceless┬┐
I love this!

This tiny CD R/W is convenient and has that sexy look of slick new technological devices. Included in the packaging was a zippered case that holds everything and fits easily into my notebook carrying case. This unit is not a space thief, and it adds very little weight to my carrying bag. That makes me happy.

Unlike other reviewers, I found the minidrive worked beautifully on four different laptops. The operating system for all of these laptops is Win98 2nd edition, and was preinstalled by the manufacturer. Neither the two F580 Sony nor the two IBM X20 laptops contain hardware that has been upgraded from earlier systems. This may be significant for the ease of this installation, and is certainly an aspect that should be addressed by the buyer and technician before purchase.

The installation:

I had it up and running in mere minutes on the Sony machines in both the PCMCIA and USB modes. It took a little longer on the IBM laptops because these delightful two- pound models do not have floppy or CD drives. My solution was to connect the X20s to my home network. Then I installed the drivers across the net.

Like the Sony laptops, the IBMs worked beautifully with the PCMCIA and USB ports -- I tested each. I also tested this drive by successfully reading CD ROMs created with my Iomega USB CD RW and Bantam Backpack CD RW. I also performed a reverse test by successfully reading CD ROMs created by the Archos in these drives, as well as my Sony laptop's DVD drive.

The features that caught my attention were the size of the unit, the carrying case, the choice of PCMCIA or USB, and that it is bundled with all cards and connectors. The special bonus is the Adaptec Easy CD Creator software that ships with the drive.

The issue: it is sometimes difficult to get the drive to eject the CD. It's a glitch, and may be frustrating to other users.

USB Advice: if you purchase this, or any other brand of CD RW that uses the USB port, make sure you have no other USB devices connected when you are burning CDs. USB ports share the hardware interrupt signals, therefore you will not have a 100% success rate. It is similar to driving when there is traffic when a 10 mile, 10 minute ride becomes a thirty-minute nightmare.

I found this out the hard way with other drives; the Archos is no exception. I use the PCMCIA connection with mine and recommend the same for all users who have other USB devices active.

If you are looking for a truly portable, reliable CD RW this is an excellent choice. I love mine and have carefully hidden it from anyone who might want to "borrow" it for their own travels. I will loan the Iomega USB CD RW or Bantam Backpack CD RW -- but do not touch my Archos!

Four stars and a wish that others had found the unit as easy as I have -- the lost star is due to the glitch. I, however, am still very happy with mine.

1-0 out of 5 stars Worst Drive, Even Worse Support
I purchased this drive thinking it would be the ultimate laptop add on, it turned out to be the ultimate headache nightmare. Archos does not supply a specific driver for the drive. Archos claims you can use the Windows drivers just fine, however, the PCMCIA Card interface never did work. The tech support person told me to "just run it on USB and don't use the PCMCIA card, it doesn't work". Also per the tech service guy, it does not support the 800 mb cd's. Don't waist your time or money buying it only to return it disappointed.

1-0 out of 5 stars Worst drive ever!
I got the PC version of this drive, which comes with PCMCIA and USB cables. PC performance is erratic, but at least the thing works. But I cannot get this drive to work on my Mac. I've got the correct cable, drivers and a new copy of Toast. Nothing. Forget support. I have sent many emails to Archos with no response. There is hardly any support information on their website. A company that does not support its products does not deserve our money.

1-0 out of 5 stars Returned it!
I was really happy after getting the software installed. It worked once... Then it would not lock again. At the store I saw another customer returning the exact same model... ... Read more
