Amazon.com Product Description

Whether you're listening to music, playing games, or watching movies, Altec Lansing's affordable and compact 221 speaker system will bring your entertainment to life, offering 5 watts per channel for each of its 2 satellite speakers and 10 watts for its bass-reflex subwoofer. And, the system's distinctive styling will look great anywhere in your home.

Altec Lansing attributes its high sound quality to its proprietary speaker technology, which utilizes custom-built, high-fidelity drivers, and state-of-the-art equalization circuitry. The satellites employ unique, 3-inch drivers for clear, phase-coherent treble, while the subwoofer's 4-inch long-throw woofer and ported, bas-resonant enclosure pumps out the low end so you don't miss a single wham, bump, or thump of your favorite music or games.

The satellites are designed for desk positioning, with magnetically shielded drivers that won't induce distortion if placed directly beside a TV or computer monitor. The subwoofer crosses over at 150 Hz, and its bass frequencies are more or less unidirectional, meaning it's hard for our ears to determine the exact location of the sound. This frees you to position the sub wherever it's most convenient, and the satellites' midrange and high frequencies will psychoacoustically "place" the bass frequencies where they ought to be.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Sound at a Great Price
I purchased the 621 Altec Lansing not for a computer, but for a home theater system. I learned you could do this after purchasing a Altec Lansing 2100 speakers for my HP Pavillion. The 2100 is also a great product...The 621 speakers have 2 inputs (1 main and 1 aux.). One y-adaptor is included and you could purchase an additional 1/8 to 1/8 microphone jack and a Y-adaptor for the L/R audio output at [your local store]...The mid range, highs and lows are very accurate and precise. I expected some noise at higher volumes, but the speakers are so powerful and efficient that you don't hear noise except at ear drum damaging levels...This is a great set up if you don't want 6 speakers for surround sound. I replaced an expensive 2 speaker/1 subwoofer home theater system offering 5.1 sound and saved [money]...I think the power and sound quality of this speaker hooked up to a DVD with virtual surround and VCR would make most people very happy. It sure makes a lot of sense for me.

I wish I knew about this a while back and would not have wasted so much money in the past. Give it a try.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Techie Essential!
Altec Lansing has definitely cooked up a special treat for all of us. Arguably the best gaming system on the market at the moment, the Altec Lansing 641 delivers 400 watts (200W RMS) of pure power.

Set-up and installation is a walk-in-the-park with the 641. Simply connect the speakers and remote to the massive subwoofer, and you are practically good to go. You can derive the best output from this monster by placing the front pair in front of you and the rear pair facing your back; both at ear level. Most four to five speaker systems are not equipped with large lengths of wire for optimal performance. Altec, however, envisioned and addressed all the potential woes for their consumers. The 641 is equipped with large lengths or wire, wall brackets as well as connectivity features to connect the speakers to additional gaming consoles!

The sound quality is crisp and crystal clear. The treble delivers excellent performance without being overbearing, and you must experience the bass on your own to feel it. The subwoofer is NOT magnetically shielded to crank out maximum vibrations, hence, I would suggest placing the sub away from your monitor. It is difficult to verbalize the intensity of the bass; but don't be surprised if you get complaints from your neighbors.

There were only two things that disappointed me. First, it is a spatial nightmare! The subwoofer is almost as large as a small minitower, if not larger! Secondly, the remote is wired!?!? I cannot understand why Altec would have a wired remote in this age. Conversely, the remote is packed with an array of features. Treble and bass control, multiple sound modes (stereo, stereo X2 and gaming) and of course, volume control and power.

Being a gamer at heart, I tested the speakers with Quake 3, Need for Speed and various other games. One word: Spectacular! I have not seen most speakers in the $... range come even close. The Klipsch 4.1, probably the next best system, clearly falls way short of the 641.

Outstanding sound quality, more features than you can handle, handy remote and bone-rattling bass is what makes up this package. For the price (I got mine for under $..., including shipping), it does not get any better than this! If you have space for another minitower at your computer desk, buy this system immediately.

4-0 out of 5 stars Incredible sound from a small package
I saw those other sexy little Altec Lansing speakers in the store, but they really sounded poor. I also listened to these and was sold. The sound on this system is unbelievable - comparable with any decent stereo speaker set, great low end base, high end tweeter, and they have mid range cones in them to cover the in between. I still don't get the remote, at least make it wireless, I would rather just not have a remote. Anyway, music and sound from DVDs comes out fantastic, just as good as my stereo. It looses one star because of the subwoofer problem that I know of, and the annoying pop if the speakers are not turned on in the proper order. I still consider these about the best multimedia speakers you can buy.

4-0 out of 5 stars Sounds like Heaven
Great Set, very Hefty and Heavy, but worth every pound. After using them almost continuosly for 2 years, the sub died on me. If I unplug it for a while, the woofer comes back, but after a few minutes it dies gain. Satelite speakers are in excellent condition, I always take care of my stuff and I am really sad to have to get a new set. This 641 has the most exquisite sound I have ever heard from a speaker set ever. I would recommend this above any other set, but if you do get them, please unplug or manually power off from the rear of the sub, and not only from the corded remote. I hope AL comes back with a set that compares or beats this one, not like the crappy ones they have in the market now.

5-0 out of 5 stars IMPORTANT NOTE REGARDING THESE SPEAKERS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I spoke to an Altec Lansing tech today and he told me a very important thing about them.

The speakers had a flaw in powering down the system that made the subs die in about an 8 month periond.

If you used ONLY the remote to turn off the system and left the power switch located on the back of the subs on, the subs will still be powered thus shortening their life.

In order to keep the subwoofer life you have to:

1.) Turn off the power using the remote first.

2.) THEN then turn off the power switch on the back the subs.

If you do that simple thing, these awesome speakers will last you forever. I hope this helps out everyone!

4-0 out of 5 stars ASC65i packs a nice bass and looks stylish
I have a PC but don't get me wrong, I love to accessorize, especially my speakers. When I first bought this 3 piece, I was impressed by its features: 27 Watt subwoofer OF WOOD so it doesn't have distortions, Magnetically shielded sattelites so you don't have to worry about putting it close to your PC. Best of all, it comes with 6 colors, one already on the satellites, five others including yellow, red, green and blue (already on) so you can accessorize accordingly to your iMAC. It has a bass knob on the subwoofer and a volume control on the right satellite.

This stylish system packs a nice 40 Watts, the two satellites together are 13 and the subwoofer is a generous 27. It comes with a nice cord that will look great with your current mac. It's got a input jack you easily hook to any microphone/line source and the AC adapter has a coiling wire that stretches so you can place the subwoofer under your desk, next to a table of wood which is good for the subwoofer to vibrate and shake on. I can feel it on my desk right now, do not underestimate these fancy looking speakers, they kick and has lots of boom!

So far, there's nothing bad, I only dislike the poorer treble quality of the satellites but they're not all that bad-only a little worse compared to my old Creative ones but that's because they were 20 watts, not 13.

If you are looking for a great speaker package to style your mac, go for it, if you have a PC and you are a hardcore gamer/frequent mp3 downloader or just listen to music a lot, I recommend the ACS5x systems. I think you'll find them to your liking with more bass and slightly more treble.

For macs, or the newer ones, to replace your Harmon Kardon speakers is a crime! Don't! Skip on these Altec Lansing ones for now unless you desperately seek deeper, richer bass. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Good, affordable basic sound system
This would be a good upgrade from any 2 speaker set that you get from DELL, COMPAQ or so. AVS300 features a large subwoofer so that it really enhances the otherwise weak satellites.
Do not expect much from these speakers and start to compare it with other speaker sets. It definitely sound better than ANYTHING that is under $50 MSRP, but do not go overboard and compare it with the logitech Z640's. It would provide enough "boom" and clarity for mostly everyone's listening. I'm a college student and can't say how i like these speakers, and i listen to MP3's all day and play counter strike too. For around $20 these speakers are a great value. ... Read more
