Amazon.com Product Description

Toshiba takes DLP technology into the future with the 62-inch TheaterWide 62HM84 HD-ready rear-projection TV. The 16:9 62HM84 uses a proprietary system called TALEN (Toshiba Advanced Light Engine); based on Texas Instruments' HD2+ DLP chip, it enhances brightness and contrast while keeping the 1,280 x 720-pixel progressive resolution (720p). Toshiba's TheaterWide TVs challenge direct-view CRT models when it comes to reproducing deep blacks and details in dark or shadowy scenes.

What is DLP?
The DLP processor DLP, or Digital Light Processing, is a technology that bounces a colored light beam across an array of hundreds of thousands of hinge-mounted microscopic mirrors attached to a single chip, called a "micro mirror device" (below, pictured with the head of a pin).
DLP mirrors dwarfed by the head of a pin
Each of the mirrors can be pointed toward or away from the light source thousands of times per second, providing not only minute color detail but also sharper resolution than even LCD displays.
Detail of resolution comparison between LCD and DLP
This set is HDTV-ready (it needs an optional hi-def receiver to get HD signals), but can improve standard-definition video thanks to Toshiba's multi-step PixelPure video processing system, which optimizes the three main picture quality factors: resolution, contrast, and color. All incoming signals are upconverted by the built-in "scaler" to match the DLP chip's native 720p resolution.

PixelPure encompasses 8 different processing circuits. Among its components are: 6.2 million-pixel oversampling (for higher perceived resolution), real-speed progressive scanning (which uses additional sampling points to create smoother diagonal lines), a Magic Square algorithm (for smooth, natural color gradation), Dynamic Contrast Enhancer (for higher perceived contrast and increased color saturation), and Color Detail Enhancer (to maintain fine image detail in color-saturated areas).

DLP (Digital Light Processing) technology uses an optical semiconductor, known as the Digital Micromirror Device, or DMD chip, to digitally manipulate light. The chip contains a rectangular array of up to 1.3 million microscopic mirrors, each of which measures less than one-fifth the width of a human hair. A DMD panel's micromirrors are mounted on tiny hinges that enable them to tilt either toward the light source (on) or away from it (off)--creating a light or dark pixel on the projection surface. The bit-streamed image code entering the semiconductor directs each mirror to switch on and off up to several thousand times per second, such that the mirrors can reflect pixels in up to 1,024 shades of gray.

The HD2+ DLP chip ensures an ultra-clean image by filling in the dimples, or vias, in the mirrors to avoid stray light. It increases both brightness and contrast, resulting in an impressive color-corrected contrast ratio (2,200:1) at 1,100 ANSI Lumens. The set's TheaterFine HD Super Fine Pitch screen reduces the physical space between the lines on the lenticular screen, resulting in a finer, sharper, more detailed picture.

Toshiba's DFine Hi-Speed VSM (velocity scan modulation) improves contrast and overall picture sharpness, while the CableClear DNR+ digital noise reduction optimizes poor NTSC signals from antenna or cable, further eliminating video noise ("snow") for a clean, crisp image. Cinema Mode circuitry (3:2 pulldown switch) identifies original film-based content from DVDs, then reassembles the frame sequence to more accurately reproduce the original 24-frame-per-second material.

A 3D Y/C (4 MB, 10-bit) digital comb filter with Vertical Contour Correction helps eliminate dot crawl and color bleed and significantly reduces detail noise, seen as shimmering or flicker, in complex or intricately detailed scenes. Color temperature controls allow you to adjust white balance. The "Warm" setting reduces the color temperature to an NTSC standard 6,500 degrees Kelvin and delivers a redder image that is ideal for display in a dimly lit room. "Medium" and "Cool" provide a progressively bluer image for the best picture as room light levels are increased.

The 62HM84 has plenty of inputs for connecting all your audio and video components. In back you'll find two RF, two composite video, two S-video, and two HD ColorStream component video, as well as an HDMI digital input. HDMI (High-Definition Multimedia Interface) is an uncompressed, all-digital audio/video interface that supports standard, enhanced, or high-definition video, plus 8-channel digital audio--all on a single cable. A set of front composite and S-video inputs make hooking up a game console or camcorder a snap.

Other features include HD Window dual-tuner POP (picture-on-picture) with PIP sound for listening to two programs simultaneously, the new Radiance DC Lamp with high brightness and lower power modes for extended life, individual audio/video settings by input type, sleep and wake timers, Real Speed progressive scanning to create smoother diagonal lines, Color Transient Improver for sharp transitions on color changes without bleeding, and Color Detail Enhancer to maintain fine image detail in color saturated areas.

Aside from the 20-watts-per-channel stereo speaker system, the 62HM84 uses MTS for programming with stereo sound, SAP for receiving a second audio track in another language. Meanwhile, SRS WOW combines 3D Sound (simulated surround sound from any stereo audio) with TruBass (yet another low-frequency enhancement) and Focus (which clarifies voices). The StableSound volume leveler eliminates drastic volume spikes while changing channels or when channels go to a commercial break.

Amazon.com Product Description

A road warrior's dream, a home theater's able centerpiece: Toshiba's SD-P2700 DVD-Video/DVD-Audio portable DVD player gives you the best of both worlds. The compact unit is distinguished by its sleek appearance, its 8.9-inch polysilicon widescreen display, and its high-resolution 1,024 x 600-pixel screen. The TFT (thin-film-transistor) active-matrix display delivers film-like images rich in detail, color resolution, and contrast.

Besides media playback versatility--it handles everything from DVD-Video to DVD-R, VCD, MP3/WMA CD, and a host of image formats--the SD-P2700 offers Toshiba's Super ColorStream Pro progressive-scan component-video outputs (for use with high-definition and HD-ready TVs) and employs an 10-bit, 54 MHz video digital-to-analog converter to cement its guarantee of stellar image quality. A sleek, credit-card-sized remote control simplifies operation.

Progressive scanning, referred to as 480p for the number of horizontal lines that compose the video image, creates a picture using twice the scan lines of a conventional DVD picture, giving you higher resolution and sharper images while eliminating nearly all motion artifacts.

Further, the SD-P2700 incorporates the Toshiba exclusive Digital Direct LCD Drive, which minimizes conversion artifacts by streaming the video signal directly from the MPEG decoder to the LCD screen driver in the digital domain, bypassing D/A-A/D conversions that would otherwise degrade image quality.

Toshiba's digital photo viewer displays images right on your television in a variety of popular formats, including Konica, Fuji Photo, Kodak Photo CD, as well as standard JPEG files--there's even a Secure Digital/MultiMedia Card slot to further simplify viewing. An onscreen display walks you through the process of making your own slideshows, in which you can preset the viewing time of each slide as well as zoom, rotate, and pan each photo.

Leading-edge 24-bit/192 kHz digital-analog converters from Analog Devices delivers exceptional 2-channel DVD-Audio frequency response and dynamic range. DVD-Audio discs deliver high-resolution audio, capturing and reproducing all of the nuances of the original performance and offering high-resolution surround sound as well as stereo. (DVD-Audio resolution is available through the analog audio outputs only.)

A pair of built-in headphone jacks let you watch or listen with a partner, while Spatializer N-2-2 ULTRA and Natural Headphone virtual surround sound algorithms simulate surround through 2 speakers or 1 set of headphones. The built-in stereo speakers (1.5 watts x 2) grant headphone-free listening through high-efficiency titanium drivers in bass-reflex enclosures for more full-bodied sound than typical portables produce.

The SD-P2700 passes both Dolby Digital and DTS 5.1-channel surround-sound signals through its coaxial-type digital-audio output for direct connection to a full-featured audio/video receiver. The supplied lithium-ion battery blends seamlessly with the player's cosmetic profile and offers around 3.5 hours of uninterrupted movie or music entertainment. The battery also charges quickly, in just 3 hours.

HD Dynamic Contrast increases contrast and color saturation to create deep, rich images. The intelligent circuitry analyzes both the dark and bright areas of the picture, separately optimizing the dynamic range in each area. Picture enhancements include luminance transient improvement, green enhancement, and blue stretch. This circuit is only active in sports mode and works with all inputs.

A 3D Y/C (4 MB, 10-bit) digital comb filter with Vertical Contour Correction ensures sharp, clean pictures from RF (older VCR, laserdisc) and composite-video signals. Cinema Mode (3:2 pulldown switch) circuitry identifies original film-based content from DVDs, then reassembles the frame sequence to more accurately reproduce the original 24-frame-per-second material.

Dual ColorStream HD component-video inputs (Y, Pr, Pb) provide the ultimate picture quality from high-resolution component-video signals (as from compatible DVD players or satellite receivers). Two sets of rear AV inputs (one with S-video) and a set of front AV inputs foster easy connection with a camcorder or gaming console, and a rear audio output lets you hook the set up with a surround receiver.

And the 5-watts-per-channel 23HLV84 offers SRS WOW processing, which combines 3D Sound (simulated surround sound from any stereo audio) with TruBass (yet another low-frequency enhancement) and Focus (which clarifies voices). If that's not enough aural excitement, you can also enjoy 2-channel simulated surround courtesy of Dolby Virtual Surround.

HDMI is a lossless, uncompressed, all-digital audio/video interface to link the set with any audio/video source (such as a set-top box, DVD player, or AV receiver). HDMI supports standard-definition (SD), enhanced definition (ED), or high-definition (HD) video, plus multi-channel digital audio--all using a single cable. It transmits all ATSC HDTV standards and supports up to 8-channel digital audio, with bandwidth to spare to accommodate future enhancements and requirements.

5-0 out of 5 stars easy home security type camera
I wanted to get a camera for the house that I could check while on the road travelling for work. The Toshiba camera featured a low light level so I can type in my camera webpage address and see the front of the house at night in lower light levels. The camera works wirelessly from my linksys wireless B/G router. All I needed to do was plug the camera into power outlet which was in the garage. The power cord is 30+ feet. I found Toshiba updated the temperature specs so it can be used in -4 to 122F temperatures. It was easy to install and the picture quality is great at 1.45 megapixels. The camera also has a rugged housing unlike most cameras priced at the same level. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great television for the price
After a spilled water incident killed my five year old television, I finally decided to upgrade. Plasmas and LCD's are still too expensive, so I went with this one.

I think it is an absolutely great television. With the BBE and surround sound on, the sound from the tv speakers is clear and powerful.I used to have to really pump up the volume on my old tv, but now at low levels it is still doing very nicely.

The smart sound feature is also very powerful. On my old tv, watching DVD's meant putting the volume up almost to maximum. Now, the volume stays consistent despite the input.

The image is very clear and sharp.I had to lower the contrast levels significantly, and a couple of others from their defaults to get rid of a slight glow and washed out feeling with the default settings. However, with those minor adjustments, it looks really fantastic.

Only negative is that Amazon ships through Eagle shipping for these large packages, and they are a very rinky-dink operation, at least near Portland, OR.Many delays, some caused by them just forgetting to put the tv on the truck (they even told me that directly - sorry, just forgot!).If I bought a large item like this again, I would be very tempted to just drive to Best Buy.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great TV
I bought this TV after lots of online searching. It received great reviews, and the price was good so I went for it.I'm glad I did!I've had it for about 7 months now and I have become the envy of everyone in the house! We have two 36" TVs in the house, yet my little 27" is the favorite. The widescreen is great and the color sharpness is perfect. The stereo sound is also very good. It's easy to install and hook up other stereo/video components. The only question remaining is how long it will last, but I'm optimistic.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good, Mid-priced television
After extensive research and time spent in various stores looking at screens, I ended up buying the Toshiba 27AF45.I have been quite happy with the sound and picture quality, specifically with the BBE sound enhancer and surround-sound features, and with the lack of setup needed to achieve a good picture.Front A/V inputs, input lockout and a component input round out a nice price/feature package.

One negative is that there is no color temperature control, so you are only able to adjust hue and color, brightness and contrast, but with contrast up, brightness down a little, and color backed off a few notches, it rivals the picture on any professional, non-HD, higher-priced monitor in the TV studios where I work.Bravo!

I haven't had it long-enough to know how it will hold up over the long-term, but unless I'm mistaken, it seems pretty solid. Now if I can just get all the remotes to play well together! ... Read more

The Basics
When is a notebook not just a notebook? When it's one of Toshiba's new Qosmio notebooks. Distinctive from other mobile computers by virtue of its strong multimedia attributes and easy adaptability to home entertainment setups, the Qosmio E15-AV101 is a superb portable package that impresses in virtually any environment. Powerful, exceedingly versatile, and packed with cutting-edge amenities, the Qosmio E15-AV101 is well-suited to discriminating individuals with a passion for multimedia.

Processor
At the heart of any computer lies the CPU (or processor), a massive collection of miniature transistors that governs the speed and power of the entire unit. Some of today's notebooks are equipped with high-end CPUs on par with those found in top-of-the-line desktop PCs, while others are quick enough only for basic duties such as word processing, e-mail, and the like. The Qosmio E15-AV101 is equipped with an Intel Pentium M processor 735 running at 1.7 GHz. This is one of three components that comprise Intel's efficient Centrino system, the others being a specialized Intel chipset and integrated wireless support. Centrino-equipped notebooks are generally smaller, easier on the batteries, and more versatile than their non-Centrino counterparts. This particular CPU is part of Intel's new, upgraded Pentium M lineup, featuring an amazing 2 MB of Level 2 cache for extremely fast access to recently opened files and applications. Though its overall speed is not on par with that of a high-end Intel Pentium 4 processor, this CPU will easily handle all common tasks while at the same time improving battery life.

Memory
Computers typically store information on their hard drives, but they keep frequently and recently accessed data in random access memory (RAM) for faster retrieval. More RAM means more efficient computing, superior multitasking, and less strain on your hard drive. The Qosmio E15-AV101 incorporates 512 MB of fast PC2700 DDR333 SDRAM memory. Though ultrademanding users may want to expand this total to the unit's boggling maximum of 2,048 MB, the stock allotment of RAM is more than enough for the vast majority of situations.

Video
CPUs are usually so busy doing basic calculations that they need help translating visual output to the screen. This is the duty of the graphics card (or graphics controller). A graphics controller with dedicated video memory is preferable to a controller that "shares" the system's main memory, as it will better handle complex procedures. This system's graphics controller is an nVidia GeForce FX Go5200 with 64 MB of dedicated DDR video memory. This is considered a strong notebook graphics chipset, delivering topnotch images and smooth frame rates to virtually any 2-D and most 3-D applications, including many of today's most popular 3-D games. Super-serious gamers may want to upgrade to an even more powerful 3-D card, though most users will be quite satisfied as is.

Display
You'll love the way your images look on the system's 15-inch XGA display. Featuring Toshiba's TruBrite technology for a better, brighter picture than with typical notebooks, a maximum resolution of 1,024 by 768 pixels, and extra-wide viewing angles, this display is ready for any environment and source.

Hard Disk
The Qosmio E15-AV101 features a massive 80 GB of hard disk space. This level of data storage is a welcome perk indeed for those who want to operate a broad range of applications and also keep a large library of space-gobbling music and multimedia files.

Optical Drive
An optical drive is essential in today's computing environment. A CD-ROM drive allows you to install CD-based applications and play music CDs. A CD-RW drive adds CD burning, so you can also back up your important files to long-lasting discs and create personalized music CDs. With a DVD-ROM drive you can watch DVD movies. And with a DVD-RW drive, you can write home movies to durable discs and archive files to DVDs, which boast more than seven times the storage capacity of CDs. Some drives allow you to do a combination of all of these tasks. This system features a DVD-Super-Multi drive that supports all of the above in each of today's most common CD and DVD formats.

Audio
The system features an integrated audio processor that mimics the spatial awareness of surround sound and two larger-than-average Harman-Kardon speakers for powerful mobile stereo output.

Keyboard and Controls
You'll control your notebook via an 85-key keyboard, several one-touch multimedia and general function keys, and a TouchPad pointing device with scroll.

Connectivity and Expansion
Whether you prefer wireless or corded connections, the Qosmio E15-AV101 is ready for anything the present or future may bring. The unit offers a wide variety of ways to keep in touch, including a standard dialup 56K data/fax modem for low-speed communication, an IntelPRO/100 VE network connection for high-speed wired networking and Internet, and integrated Intel PRO/Wireless 2200BG (802.11b/g) for cordless e-communication at home, at the office, or on the road via local public hotspots. Other key amenities include four high-speed USB 2.0 ports for plug-and-play devices such as external drives and digital cameras, Bluetooth 1.1 technology for interaction with wireless peripherals, an i.LINK 1394 FireWire port (commonly used for quick data uploads from digital camcorders), futuristic S-video and component TV-out ports, and a digital audio-out (SPDIF) connection. Furthermore, all critical connections are positioned at the rear of the unit for clean lines and easy home entertainment setup.

Operating System and Software
Toshiba has fitted the Qosmio E15-AV101 with Microsoft's Windows XP Media Center Edition 2004. Similar to the standard Windows XP but with several enhancements geared to the multimedia fan, this is one of today's most advanced operating systems. Other applications include Intuit's Quicken New User Edition 2004 financial center, Microsoft's Office OneNote 2003 note-taking and management program, and several operational, multimedia, and online utilities.

Dimensions and Weight
Notebook computers are manufactured in a wide variety of sizes and weights. Many of today's most powerful notebooks are also the largest, weighing ten or twelve pounds or more, therefore too big and cumbersome for extensive, continuous traveling. These are often referred to as "desktop replacements." On the other extreme are "thin and lights" or "ultraportables," super-miniaturized units that typically aren't as powerful as their larger brethren but weigh as little as two pounds and will often fit comfortably inside a large purse. At 13.31 by 11.22 by 1.70 inches and 8.17 pounds without AC adapter, the Qosmio E15-AV101 is of average size.

Power
The unit is equipped with a six-cell lithium-ion battery that delivers up to 2.35 hours between charges. This is a shorter life expectancy than for many notebooks utilizing Intel's efficient Centrino technology, though not entirely unexpected given the system's impressive capabilities. ... Read more

Amazon.com Product Description

Toshiba's 57H84 HDTV-ready projection TV is well equipped to make the most of your high-end digital and analog source components. The 57-inch set is as loaded with image technologies as it is with connections and conveniences, thereby simplifying your home-theater experience while also enriching it.

The 57H84's exclusive PowerFocus HD lens system was designed specifically for HDTV programming. Most lens systems cannot faithfully reproduce a high-definition signal. PowerFocus HD uses six elements and a quality color-correction system to produce an image that is up to 65 percent sharper than an image produced by standard lens systems. The PowerFocus HD's higher beam current and finer beam spot provide a 30 percent increase in sharpness and a 10 percent increase in brightness over standard CRTs. Toshiba's four-element PowerFocus HC lenses offer 50 percent higher contrast than comparable 5-element lenses, giving you clear, deep, three-dimensional images.

The set's TheaterFine HD super fine-pitch screen uses a .52 mm design to reduce the space between lines on the lenticular screen, which sharpens the image. And since not everything you watch will be high-definition in origin (wouldn't that be nice), CrystalScan HDSC upconverts all video signals (including 480i/p) to 1080i HD. This significantly reduces jagged-line artifacts for a smoother, more natural image. (Selectable 540p, for those who want a progressive-scan image from a progressive-scan source, is available through the onscreen menu.) CableClear DNR+ Digital Noise Reduction circuitry--selectable by input--optimizes poor NTSC signals from antenna or cable by eliminating video noise (snow).

Meanwhile, DFine high-speed velocity-scan modulation improves the definition at picture edges, creating sharper images by slowing the CRT (cathode-ray tube) beam's horizontal scanning during demanding work--say, when rendering transitions from light to dark parts of an image--and speeding it up when scanning easily rendered sections, like broad dark areas.

A 3D Y/C (4 MB, 10-bit) digital comb filter with Vertical Contour Correction processes RF and composite-video signals for a sharp, clean picture. This advanced filter significantly reduces detail noise, seen as shimmering or flicker, in complex or intricate scenes. The TouchFocus digital convergence system (which creates perfect corner-to-corner focus at the press of a button) and AccuFocus 56-point manual convergence system let you choose the best calibration method for your system.

The 57H84 is loaded with connections of all stripes, including a HDMI (High-Definition Multimedia Interface) HDTV input, which gives you a pure, uncompressed video connection with your DTV receiver or set-top box (not included). HDMI supports standard-definition (SD), enhanced definition (ED), or high-definition (HD) video, plus multichannel digital audio--all using a single cable. It transmits all ATSC HDTV standards and supports up to 8-channel digital audio, with bandwidth to spare to accommodate future enhancements and requirements.

For audio, the 57H84 offers SRS WOW, combining SRS 3D (which creates a wide three-dimensional sound field), TruBass (which boosts bass frequency perception for dramatic low-frequency effects), and Focus (which raises the perceived sound image vertically to clarify voices) to greatly enhance your home-theater sound.

The set's split-cabinet design allows the cabinet to be divided for ease of delivery and installation.

5-0 out of 5 stars So far so great!
I've had this TV for about 2 weeks now and it's been great. Great picture with DVDs and HDTV. If you don't plan on using this primarily for DVDs or HD, then you won't be as impressed with the picture. It really does depend on the source and the connections you use. My neighbor sells home theater equipment for a living, he recommended this TV for it's picture, and so far I agree with him. The delivery from amazon was quick(about a week), the delivery company was very helpful and curtious. So far an all around excellent experience.

My neighbor had a better deal on this TV but with the Shipping and Tax it would have cost more.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great picture
This tv has the best picture of any we looked at. It beats Hitachi and Sony hands down. ... Read more

A huge picture and beautiful styling are important, but equally so are the refinements within the set that you only see when you experience its incredible picture. 4-0 out of 5 stars Great starter HDTV or bedroom set
The Toshiba 26HF85 is my first HDTV set. My criteria were 1080i support, HDMI and dual HD component inputs, in a small cabinet. With its speakers on the bottom, this set is very compact. At only 27.5" wide, it is small enough to fit on an extra nightstand in my bedroom. I have a DirecTV H10 Hi-Def receiver hooked to it via HDMI, along with a PlayStation 2 via component. The picture quality is superb, although I am certainly no expert in that area.
This set has a well-designed and attractive remote control with buttons that glow in the dark. The cabinet has nice styling as well, and even has built-in handles like the smaller Toshibas. The menu system is fairly easy to use and offers plenty of options, but the on-screen graphics are low-quality and are hideous compared to the gorgeous menus in the newer Samsungs. This set does have auto aspect ratio sensing, but I don't feel that it works as well as it could.
The 26HF85 is an attractively-priced HDTV if you don't require an on-board ATSC tuner. ... Read more

34. Toshiba SD-5970 DVD Player with HDMI
list price: $249.99
(price subject to change: see help)
Asin: B0003404RW
Catlog: CE
Manufacturer: Toshiba
Sales Rank: 1052

Amazon.com Product Description

Toshiba's surprisingly affordable SD-5970 single-disc DVD player is a must for videophiles: the player upconverts DVD-Video content to high-definition resolution (either 720p or 1080i). Further, the sleek component offers a cutting-edge High-Definition Multimedia Interface (HDMI) so you can make a direct digital connection between the SD-5970 and a compatible HDTV or HD-ready TV/monitor. The player spins DVD-Video movies, of course, and also handles recordable CDs loaded with MP3 or WMA music files and discs filled with JPEG digital photos, letting you make the most of your digital media.

The SD-5970 is outfitted with 10-bit/54 MHz video DACs (digital-to-analog converters) and ColorStream Pro progressive-scan component-video outputs for seamless, flicker-free images when viewed through high-definition and HD-ready TVs. Progressive scanning, referred to as 480p/720p for the number of horizontal lines that compose the video image, creates a picture using a minimum of twice the scan lines of a conventional DVD picture, giving you higher resolution and sharper images while eliminating nearly all motion artifacts. For compatibility with traditional SD (standard-definition) televisions, the SD-5970 sports composite- and S-video outputs.

HDMI is a lossless, uncompressed, all-digital audio/video interface supporting standard-definition (SD), enhanced definition (ED), or high-definition (HD) video, plus multichannel digital audio--all using a single cable. It transmits all ATSC HDTV standards and supports up to 8-channel digital audio, with bandwidth to spare to accommodate future enhancements and requirements.

The SD-5970 also performs 3:2 pulldown reversal. DVD mastering introduces a common distortion when adjusting 24 frames-per-second movies to 30 fps video; 3:2 pulldown digitally corrects this distortion. Conventional composite- and S-video outputs bring compatibility with nearly any television.

Digital picture zoom is an interactive DVD feature that lets you select and magnify an area of a picture you want to zoom in on. Enhanced digital processing during moving video or freeze-frame playback produces high color fidelity and resolution, even when you're zoomed in. You can also use this feature to expand letterbox-only films to full-screen (4:3 aspect ratio) dimension.

For audio, choose from 2-channel analog audio outs or either of 2 forms of digital-audio output, optical or coaxial, for transmitting discrete, multichannel surround signals--either Dolby Digital 5.1 or DTS 5.1--to a compatible AV receiver/surround processor and speaker system. Listening in surround sound puts you right in the middle of the action, whether you're playing an action movie, a concert video, or a period drama. Not set up for surround yet? A special 3-D Surround circuit simulates surround sound from any 2 speakers.

Amazon.com Product Description

Toshiba's 42HP84 42-inch plasma television will thrill fans of both movies and sports with its widescreen, portrait-thin chassis, full high-definition resolution, phenomenal picture enhancements, and great sound. The set produces 10 watts per channel stereo sound with both Dolby Virtual Surround and SRS WOW technology to enliven your viewing.

A plasma screen gives you incredibly vivid colors, extremely wide viewing angles (wider, even, than LCD screens), and a casing that's easy place due to its slim size--the 42HP84 is a mere 4.9 inches deep, perfect for desk or wall mounting (a table stand is included). Brightness tends to be extremely uniform across plasma screens, which are also impervious to the picture distortion and negative color balances that afflict CRT monitors when placed in close proximity to lighting or sound systems. You do, however, need to be wary of image burn-in (wherein long-held stationary images leave a permanent impression in the screen).

Heading up the great features is Toshiba's PixelPure proprietary digital video processing, which encompasses 8 different processing circuits that together create a consistently clear, deep, and accurate picture. Among PixelPure's components are: 6.2 million-pixel oversampling (for higher perceived resolution), real-speed progressive scanning (which uses additional sampling points to create smoother diagonal lines), a Magic Square algorithm (for smooth, natural color gradation), Dynamic Contrast Enhancer (for higher perceived contrast and increased color saturation), and Color Detail Enhancer (to maintain fine image detail in color-saturated areas).

HD Dynamic Contrast continually analyzes picture information and enhances those parts of the picture with the most detail information which results in sharper, deeper, more film-like images. The 42HP84's 3D Y/C (4 MB, 10-bit) digital comb filter further enhances resolution by removing blurred edges between colors and reducing dot crawl (tiny, moving dots of color along a sharp color separation in a vertical line, as in a depiction of a character's striped T-shirt).

A pair of ColorStream HD component-video inputs provides the ultimate picture quality from high-resolution component-video signals, like those from DTV set-top boxes, progressive DVD players, or satellite receivers. Other connections include a direct-digital DVI input with high-bandwidth digital content protection (HDCP), 3 each composite- and S-video inputs, and a composite-video output (with both fixed- and variable-level audio outs) for use with a VCR or surround receiver. Front-panel inputs simplify connections with camcorders and gaming consoles.

HD Window POP (picture-on-picture) accepts 480i, 480p, 720p, and 1080i signals and can even display 2 different-resolution signals simultaneously. The split-screen function lets you adjust the size of the POP boxes and will even let you view both 16:9 and 4:3 images at the same time. The set's 12 MultiWindow system makes it possible to see the main picture while viewing your favorites or doing a channel scan in 11 smaller boxes.

When hooked up to the IR output, the supplied TheaterLink IR dongle lets you operate up to six video components by simply pointing the remote at the TV screen, even if the components are hidden away in cabinets or out of view.

Cinema Mode (3:2 pulldown) circuitry identifies original film-based content from DVDs, then reassembles the frame sequence to more accurately reproduce the original 24-frame-per-second material. Four TheaterWide picture modes enable full-screen viewing of varying widescreen movie formats, while color temperature control provides three selectable temperature settings for achieving an optimum white balance.

SRS WOW creates an enveloping sound with enhanced bass and great dialogue reproduction. This system combines SRS 3D (for wide, three-dimensional sound), TruBass (which boosts bass-frequency perception for more dramatic effects); and Focus (which raises the perceived sound "image" vertically to clarify voices, even at low listening levels).

Amazon.com Product Description

Big-screen high-definition television just got better-looking and more affordable. Toshiba's 51-inch widescreen, HD-ready 51H84 uses a host of Toshiba-exclusive technologies to make the most of your high-end digital and analog source components.

The 51H84's exclusive PowerFocus HD lens system was designed specifically for HDTV programming.

The set's TheaterFine HD super fine-pitch screen uses a .52 mm design to reduce the space between lines on the lenticular screen, thereby sharpening the image.

The 51H84 is loaded with connections of all stripes, including a HDMI (High-Definition Multimedia Interface) HDTV input, which gives you a pure, uncompressed video connection with your DTV receiver or set-top box (not included).

For audio, the 51H84 offers SRS WOW, combining SRS 3D (which creates a wide three-dimensional sound field), TruBass (which boosts bass frequency perception for dramatic low-frequency effects), and Focus (which raises the perceived sound image vertically to clarify voices) to greatly enhance your home-theater sound.

The set's cabinet offers lifting handles for ease of delivery and installation.

Amazon.com Product Description

Toshiba takes DLP technology into the future with its 46-inch TheaterWide 46HM84 HD-ready rear-projection TV. The 16:9 46HM84 uses a proprietary system called TALEN (Toshiba Advanced Light Engine); based on Texas Instruments' HD2+ DLP chip, it enhances brightness and contrast while keeping the 1,280 x 720-pixel progressive resolution (720p).

The 46HM84 has plenty of inputs for connecting all your audio and video components.

Aside from the 20-watts-per-channel stereo speaker system, the 46HM84 uses MTS for programming with stereo sound, SAP for receiving a second audio track in another language.
