Awesome Sound in a Small Package
These speakers, used with the Sound Blaster Live 5.1 sound card are nothing less than spectacular! MP3 quality can truly be measured with the ADA-305's. For the money, I would challenge anyone to top this system. If you're an old 100watt/channel stereo audiophile, it's time to upgrade. Trust me, you WILL be blown away! Altec Lansing is to be commended for taking PC sound to the next level.

Pricey but worth it...
I've had the speakers for nearly a year now and was reading through a few of the reviews here and i also have to agree that these speakers really are Unbelievable they just sound great doesn't matter what music your into. The bass is great! And the prologic technology actually does sound excellent.
In a previous review however i read that a person had difficulty using the speakers with win2k well i found that i couldn't use the software which enabled the usb cable (speaker software) but that didn't mean that i couldn't use the surround sound. If you hold the centre button down for 3 or 4 seconds it switches the speakers from analog to prologic. I just happened to stumble across this when messing around with the speakers. Its easy to see if you've switched the speakers to prologic by looking at the light on the unit if its orange it means its on analog if its green then its prologic.
The speakers are soooo good!!! that i've actually put them into my room and hooked them up to my stereo system to add an EXTRA punch to my sound system, it Works amazingly with the other speakers.....
So yeh go get yourself a set of these if you can afford them at the price they're at :(

Midrange and highs and very clean and crisp. Bass is also very clean and deep.
But I was not satisfied with bass at first. It was too low at low volumes, even with bass volume set at max. I tried to increase the bass using the equaliser that is built into mp3 player, but it distorted the music, it was distorted even at lowest volumes and it was distorted with othe speakers that I tried, so I concluded that it must be the soft equaliser that is messing things up. I was diappointed about it at first, I even went as far as ordering stand alone equaliser. But couple days later I found the solution to this problem. It turned out that (on mp3 player equaliser) you should leave the bass lever where it is and turn down the rest of the levers to get distortionfree bass. Than crank up the volume on the speakers.After that, I did got much, much more distortion free bass than I needed. (prologic mode cranks up bass even further)
In fact I listened music for 5 minutes at 30% volume with bass set up as described above and my next door neghbour showd up complaining about music.
I never even plugged in stand alone equaliser that I recieved.
I am completely satisfied with these speakers now.
You can get these speaker for a total of $100 at yahoo shopping.
It is dirt cheap for this much clean sound.
(I did compared them to Klipsch promedia thx 2.1 and think that midrange is more present (or live) in ADA890 and bass also goes deeper (no wonder ADA890 has 8" bass driver vs 6.25" in Klipsch)

WOW - I'll never use another speaker again!
First of all, this system is A+++! I have had the system for a while, as I wanted to make sure I had a full listening experience before I wrote a review. The ADA890 makes my TV explode with sound. The dolby digital/THX is so realistic when I watch DVD's. It is great for games too, all of the little sounds you just can't hear with just your TV come alive.

I just wanted to share my great experience and kudos to Altec Lansing for making another superior product.

Doubtful most users need more than this
Certainly not the best speakers you could ever have for your computer, the ACS33 nevertheless fills an important niche in the market. If you're looking for subwoofered sound on the cheap, this is probably your best bet. They're competent performers, without taking price into consideration. Look at how much they cost, and you'll think there aren't better speakers made on the planet. They have the potential to work, as do most speakers, on both Macintosh and Windows machines.

Interestingly, they also have a secondary use. Because they don't need a computer to work at all, they can be plugged directly into any stereo system that has the ability to output its sound (that is, one which has an AUDIO OUT jack). They can thus give resonant stereo sound--even to lowly portables. You'll think twice about whether you really need to upgrade to a whole new system after hearing these speakers. (Before buying for this purpose, however, I'd recommend you go to altec-lansing.com and grab the manual for this product, just to make sure that it's compatible with your stereo.)

Inasmuch as there are drawbacks to the speakers, they are ones you would expect from a product so inexpensive. As another reviewer has rightly pointed out, there's no volume control on the woofer. There's also no bass, treble, or speaker-independent volume control. And the speakers are rated at only 10 watts, with a relatively indelicate frequency response.

But, big deal.

If, like most people, you've got your computer jammed into a corner in a busy room, you don't have the soundspace to set up a truly extraordinary auditory experience. If you've got a lot of people living with you, anything more than 10 watts is discourteous, anyway. Unless you have a room that you can dedicate to the computer, and that's relatively isolated from others, it's extremely unlikely you would actually be able to use more than this system offers.

Awesome speaker set!
The Altec Lansing ACS33 Power Cube speaker system is a very nice solution to anyone's computer audio needs. I am a Flash developer and your common everyday music enthusiest so sound is very important to me in my work. These sleak sattelite speakers and sub-woofer deliver crisp, powerful, and LOUD sound. I can also say that they surprised me with the quality of sound they give while set on the lowest volume setting, while barely audible. I only have two minor gripes, however, that keep this product from 5-stars. Music highs sound a bit weak and syntehtic from the desktop speakers, while the sub-woofer is also a bit weak and has no level control of its own (which, in my eyes, is a major problem with most sub-woofers). While these short comings can be contained with a equalizer program, they really shouldn't have appeared at all. But aside from these very minor problems, this system shines as a lost cost system with a lot of power!

i love the altec lansing speakers so i bought a second set thats two sets of altecs on my desk top i like to edit music and i like a lot of power these speakers do that
unfortunatly at high volume playing they seem to pop the mids speakers and i have had trouble with the switch on the sub it has shorted out so i must now tear it apart and repair it so i am back to one set for now all in all good set of speakers though i got three years out of the first set which is good for me i like the wooden sub box better than plastic

Best bang for your buck... and then some!
I've had these for quite a few years now, bought them for around $50 or $60 at the time, and never once have they failed me. They're extremely powerful and loud... louder than you'll probably ever need. For the price, there are absolutely no better speakers out there. They're worth double or triple what they sell for now. They sound awesome with all types of music, which is very important. From techno to hard rock to classical, they're just that good. Everything sounds how it should, and I'm really picky. Get these and you won't be disappointed. I also hook them up to my TV for my Playstation 2 and it definitely gives everything a boost. The only thing I can complain about is that the cords between the two satellite speakers is slightly short, there's barely 4 feet or so between them I believe. Other than that, if you're thinking of getting these, don't hesitate.

These speakers are amazing. They've got huge sound, and high quality at that, in a relatively small package. I'd ding them one star for some usability issues (shortish cord between the small speakers, no easily-accessible headphone jack, volume controls don't give a visual indication of level, lack of sufficient magnetic shielding on the subwoofer (it can't go near a monitor, but a few inches away from the computer case is fine), [poor] mfr carton (though the styrofoam packing is good)), but the sound more than makes up for it. There's no hum to speak of when the speakers are sitting idle, and the full range of sound is crisp and clear, even at volumes high enough to be heard in the other end of the house, with no distortion or muddy or tinny qualities. If your computer speakers double as your stereo, these are definitely worth the money (and you can get them fairly cheaply at auction these days). Two inputs allow you to hook them up to both your computer and a discman or TV or other device, so you can use them for more than just computing, and with the computer off. Our set has been going strong for 3 years so far, and I'm considering getting another set to use as "home theater" speakers (until we can afford a really nice Bose package or something). ...
