Amazon.com Product Description

AIWA's flagship AV-D98 surround receiver offers 120 watts across five channels, dynamic 5.1-channel digital surround processing, and Aiwa's Dynamic Integrated Neo Amplifier technology (DINA). Using DINA, the AV-D98 delivers higher dynamic range, increased headroom, lower distortion, and a wider audio soundstage than did previous Aiwa receivers.

Surround Processing
The AV-D98 is fixed to support Dolby Digital, Dolby Pro Logic, and DTS multichannel decoding from digital-audio bit streams supplied by your DVD player, DSS receiver, game console, or high-definition set-top box. Thirty preset DSP algorithms give you a choice of other ambient settings for your music, movies, or TV.

Connections
The receiver offers a full complement of inputs and outputs, including three digital-audio inputs (two optical, one coaxial), an optical digital-audio output (for a CD or minidisc recorder), and even 5.1-channel analog inputs to support DVD-Audio and Super Audio CD (SACD) players, which output multichannel high-resolution analog rather than digital audio.

Other connections include a phono input for your turntable, a dedicated subwoofer output, two S-video inputs and three S-video outputs, three A/V inputs, four A/V outputs, and one set of front A/V inputs.

Other Features
You'll also get an AM/FM digital-synthesized tuner, a multibrand remote control, a graphic equalizer with five factory presets and the option to save five more,BBE sound enhancement, Super T-Bass, banana-plug-ready binding-post speaker terminals, and two AC outlets (switched, unswitched). ... Features

  • 120 watts per channel x 5 for high power audio output; DTS/Dolby Digital 5.1-channel decoding accommodates AV receivers with 5.1-channel analog inputs
  • 3 digital-audio inputs (2 optical, 1 coaxial), 1 optical digital-audio output for flexibility with hooking up CD players and recorders, minidisc recorders, etc.
  • Front-panel AV input facilitates camcorder or game consoles
  • S-video switching routes multiple S-video devices through a central S-video connection with a compatible television
  • D.I.N.A. (Dynamic Integrated Neo Amplifier) technology heightens dynamic range, lowers distortion, and widens perceived soundstage

2-0 out of 5 stars Nice! Until it breaks
I bought this receiver last March and was very pleased with it until it just quit working. I thought...no problem, it's still under warranty, so I'll just get it fixed. That's when the real problems began. I happen to live in Anchorage, AK. and there is no authorized service center for Aiwa in Anchorage. I have been unable to access their Web sight for the nearest service center and their automated phone system continually disconnects. This has been going on for weeks! The reciever WAS great, but Aiwa USA needs to get their act together. I should have been suspect of buying another Aiwa product because I had a similar experience with Aiwa when I lived in San Diego, CA. I think I have definitely learned my lesson this time. NO MORE AIWA PRODUCTS FOR ME!!!

5-0 out of 5 stars this is a great piece of equipment for anyone!!!
i just recently purchased this item and i could not be more happy with it! the instructions are clear and comprehensive and it is very easy to use. this reciever delivers incredible levels of volume and great sound quality. the only slight problem with it is that the remote didnt come with batteries and aiwa should have supplied it with more cables, otherwise, this is the ultimate reciever as far as the price/performance ratio is concerned. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Good quality, convenient, compact boombox
I bought the boombox to listen to non-music content, e.g. books on tape and news. As it happens, its music ability is pretty good, and logic controls for all functions makes it a pleasure to operate. The only drawback so far is a somewhat noisy tape mechanism--audible at low volumes, but not too distracting.

I've had it only for only a month, but so far I am quite pleased with the purchase.

5-0 out of 5 stars Highly recommended!
I recently received the Aiwa CSD-FD92 and am VERY satisfied with my purchase. It is an excellent value considering the great sound (best I've heard in a boom box) and the extra features (incl. remote, able to modify sound to pop, rock or jazz, etc., etc.). I plan on buying more for other members of my family as they all want to borrow mine! If you're looking for a reasonably-priced boom box with great sound, you won't be disappointed with this item.

5-0 out of 5 stars Good bang for the Buck!
The sound quality is excellent for the price range. Great for a small room. This unit has a lot of features that are only seen in models costing ...more! cd-r & cd-rw compatible, autoreverse cassette player.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Value In A CD/Cassette/Digital Tuner Portable
I have purchased other Aiwa products in the past and this one didn't disappoint me in the least. It is a bit heavy but the reproduced sound is very good. The sound output of the cd,tuner and cassette are all excellent. The quality of Aiwa products has always been consistently very good. This product is also of high quality.I would recommend it to anyone looking for a good value in a cd portable under $. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Lazy Bumb Music
This is a fairly good Stereo. It fits most bookshelves (hence the name) and can swich between 3 CD's. Thats perfect for me because I only have 3 CD's.(Wierd Al, Papa Roach, and Gorillaz)I called this review "Lazy Bumb Music" because It has a remote and I often sit on my Lazy A** using the remote to control the radio, record CD's, adjust the volume or just listin to CD's and change them. It's A good stereo. I gave it a 4 because it can't go very loud. (I have a small room so I don't care) This is a room stereo not a house one. If you whan't one to fill a room it's the best. The remoter takes two AA batteries and the stereo plugs into the wall. Get this stereo for your offspring for Christmas, that way they can't blare music all threw the house. 107. Aiwa NSX-MT920 Home Theater Compact Stereo System

Average Customer Review: 3.19 out of 5 stars

Amazon.com Review

Packing five speakers and a total of 299 watts, the Aiwa NSX-MT920 has about the most power and flexibility of any compact shelf system, making it a superb addition to any small or midsized living space. This Dolby Pro Logic-decoding surround system is ideal for start-up home-theater systems, letting you enjoy four-channel Dolby Surround (left, center, right, and rear) from VHS tapes, DVD, and television broadcasts. The system also accepts decoded 5.1-channel analog signals from multichannel formats such as Dolby Digital and DTS, though you must use a surround-decoding DVD player (or other external decoder) to appreciate this. A dedicated subwoofer output completes the picture, letting you integrate a powered, bass-chuffing speaker of your choice for even greater impact from action movies and multichannel music mixes.

In the home stereo department, the NSX-MT920 features a three-CD changer, a dual auto-reverse cassette deck, an AM/FM tuner, a coaxial digital input and output, and a cool karaoke function that will make you the life of any party.

Setup is quite simple, with clear instructions; we were up and running in about 10 minutes. Though somewhat bulkier than most compact systems, the NSX-MT920 uses that mass to its benefit--the sound is nothing short of impressive.

The system delivers a whopping 100 watts to each of the front left and right speakers, making for more power than you might ever need (depending on your space). The bass is deep and satisfying. The equalizer comes with five preconfigured settings, and you can also create and save up to four customized settings of your preference. Then there's always that subwoofer output, should the system's own Super T-Bass circuit not rock the house to your liking.

The system not only booms, but looks great, too--the silver and black styling meshes nicely with most decors. In standard sleep mode, we found the multicolor display somewhat gaudy--and it might keep you awake if it's visible from your bed. Thankfully, you can turn the display off to show only the time. In addition, the system includes a slot-machine-like game that you can play at any time, whether the system is on or off (but we think it's fixed, as we never managed to win).

The karaoke feature, while probably a draw for only select users, is pretty cool. It almost eliminates the vocal portions of any song so you can play the star using either of the two microphone inputs on the system's front panel. You can also mix in your own basic beats and croon to those, too--the system supplies a variety of percussion-driven rhythms.

Our only gripe is the very limited warranty (90 days for parts and labor), though Aiwa will supply new or rebuilt parts up to one year from the purchase date. But if you're in the market for an inexpensive yet powerful compact system with surround-sound capabilities, the Aiwa NSX-MT920 certainly delivers the most bang for your buck.

Pros:

  • Terrific, powerful sound for a small system
  • Easy to set up
  • Fun karaoke features

Cons:

  • Somewhat weak rear speakers
  • Limited warranty

5-0 out of 5 stars Great system! But there are other options...
Prior to purchasing this system, I also demo'ed its sister lower-endsystem (NSX-MT720) and two other systems I wasinterested in: the Panasonic SC-AK57 and Sony MHC-RXD7AV in retail stores. I listened to Miles Davis and other jazz CD's on the Aiwa, Sony, and Panasonic in stores before buying, and was duly impressed with the sound I got from all three. At the time, however, I was most impressed by the sound I would get from the Aiwa for less $$$, and so far I have not been disappointed with the bang-for-the-buck that the NSX-MT920 has delivered. I have not had any problems with "muffled" sound that I've seen in other reviews, although the system, if anything, could be too powerful for the one-bedroom apartment I live in. The Dolby Pro Logic system delivers excellent sound with Dolby Surround-encoded VHS tapes and gives me more incentive to go to Blockbuster video and actually rent something.

If you want to listen to rap music and boom your stereo all day, the Aiwa system is certainly for you. However, if you are more concerned with clarity (i.e. if you are listening to classical, jazz, and the like), either the Panasonic SCAK57 or Sony MHC-RXD7AV I think will serve you better for the same price... I still believe the NSX-MT920 is a good value for its current price. Additionally, I believe the NSX-MT720 is also more than enough for the casual listener's home theater needs.

5-0 out of 5 stars Good things come in this small package.
What a nice surprise, a product that delivers what it promises and a whole lot more. This is a powerful little package with enough punch to knock your socks off. The karaoke feature is fun and easy enough for the entire family. You can bet we'll be singing Christmas Carols with the help of the Aiwa NSX-MT920 299 Watt Home Theater Mini System. This is a must have if you love music and the price, lets just say I really shopped around and this price was almost ½ of the next lowest price I found. Hurry and snatch this up before they realize how under priced they are.

5-0 out of 5 stars Better than BOSE
Wow, how do I explain the quality of the sound of this complete system? I have a Bose sound system and this is just as great, if not better. I added a subwoofer to my system to give it an even more bass boost. If you have a DVD player, you're in for something great. It is BETTER THAN THE MOVIES! Wait untill you hear the center speaker. It has great features like karaoke, dolby pro logic, and DSP surround sound. This is THE BEST!

3-0 out of 5 stars Beats a boombox, maybe
To be honest, I've had better sound from two tin cups on strings. But everything arrives in one box and Amazon will ship it right to your door - and for a 5 channel surround system, the price is right. There are all kinds of DSP (digital signal processing) options you can use to tweak the sound if you're not using a 5-channel input (high end VCR's and DVD players provide this for movie watching); but these options have the habit of cancelling themselves at the drop of a hat. Luckily resetting them is easy.

There are all the bells, whistles, karaoke, equalizer, bass booster, dynamic range/compression utilities you could ask for; there's even a drum machine to add rhythm and a slot-machine like irritating game which is, most unfortunately, the machine's default setting. (You can make it show the clock by pressing 'clock' each time you power off.)

For the price, you get loud, low-end sound, a 3-CD changer, and decent 2-tape and tuner capability. I run my computer sound out through it too, in the mini-disc port, with no problem. I'd buy it again, with no illusions about audiophile-quality sound, just because it annoys my neighbors.

5-0 out of 5 stars BE FAIR... Aiwa is just as good, if not better...
Aiwa systems are definately one of the best value for money stereo's you can buy. Despite all the complaints I tend to see, most relate to exceptionally old units - and most relate to those people who never got their Butt into Gear to get it fixed under warranty. That's what a warranty is for! I have owned several AIWA's and have never experienced anything but the best customer service and swiftness of reply in any kind of problem or query. I would recommend AIWA to my closest friends due to the amount of confidence I have in their products - especially the models relesed in the last two ranges. How about a true fair go... if you buy a unit for under $1,000, you can't expect it to perform and last as long as a seperate component $3,000 plus unit! (I bet you wouldn't treat it as well either) Be fair... ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Leave it on the shelf
I bought two of these machines, one for myself and the other for my mother, and we've had nothing but trouble from both of them. Both units began to malfunction almost immediately after they were unpacked. I had to exchange one since we were unable to repair it. The machine was simply unable to read CDs. The second unit needed the entire laser system replaced. A few months after the problems were fixed, they began to act up once again. I will never purchase anything from Aiwa again. A horrible experience.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great Sound Great Price
This unit is beautiful and really has the sound definition I require from a system. The two-way (my preferred speaker) speakers are crisp and have a punchy bass. I've owned an earlier version of this same unit for 3 years without a hitch. Only drawback: the opening for the CD and the Cassette are a little plastic-y. Of course they are plastic, but my other Aiwa unit has more metal on the face of the unit and feels more substantial.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great to find a Turntable for an Oldie like me!
I was so happy to find a compact hi-fi, including a turntable, because of my elaborate record collection, from back in my teens. I was not ready to give up listening to the old stuff, and didn't want the expense of replacing them in their CD version.
We have owned Aiwa before, and replaced an older version which had a turntable.
The blue color of the new speakers actually looks grey in the dim lights at night, so doesn't bother me too much.

3-0 out of 5 stars Walk About
For Aiwa, they've made some decent electronics over the past couple of years. Still, it is just a shame that I really don't see their devices anymore, in favor of companies like Sony and Panasonic. With Aiwa's HS-TX516, it has a good display of playback within the cassette, and a good quality of use when you're outside. Still, since they've been introduced, Aiwa's neckband headphones are just truly uncomfortable around the ears. I suggest if you get this, try getting another set of headphones. Sadly, I recommend the HS-TX716 over this, because it has a TV Tuner and a Weather Band added on to the features this walkman has. If you can't find this one, you might as well try and get a Sony Walkman instead. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Good looking unit, good sound
Nice system for the price. Easy to set up and use. Sounds very good in the basement.

1-0 out of 5 stars Great looking but unreliable
I have had thi sunit for 3 months and have used it lightly. Now the CD player is hissing and skipping unexplainably.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good but lousy radio reception
This little system has great sound but the FM reception is lousy. I work in NYC and work in Howard Stern's building. However, the reception of the radio station that he transmits on (92.3) is intermittent. My little ...radio picked it up no problem.

CD sounds good though and the system looks very smart sitting on my desk......

Had it for over a month now and the QSound signal processing (some type of phase shift) works fine for some songs but tends to accentuate certain instruments. For example, the lead guitar thats set to image from both speakers is drowned out by the keyboard that is favoring the right speaker. In some cases, the vocals get drowned out. Also the volume control is kinda fiddly. ...

4-0 out of 5 stars Approperate MicroSystem
There are several advantages to this system over it's competitors, making it a really good small shelf system for a home.

1. It has 30W output - which means it can achieve good high volume.
2. It has an RCA jack on the back, so I can plug in my MP3 player.
3. It's simple. Tape deck, CD player, and sterio.

Is it great? No, the navigation is a little kitchey and the cd tray is a little slow (they should have done slot-loading technology). But it's REALLY good, no where near as bad as the other reviews make it out to be...

2-0 out of 5 stars nice sound, but loud CD hiss
The system has very nice sound, but the CD makes an unusually loud hiss, which is especially evident at low volume levels. I'm debating whether to return it.

The FM reception is also very poor -- it only gets a handful of stations with any clarity. My 5-year old boom box does much better. ... Read more

I bought this piece of junk two years ago and have had nothing but problems with it. Everyone I know who has surround sound (even those who spent much less $ than I) has something that sounds MUCH better than this. Please do yourself a favor and skip this and all Awia products.

2-0 out of 5 stars Does AIWA stand up to the challenge?
I have owned an AIWA bookshelf system for 4 years and it has given me my fair share of problems. I am also aware of others having similar technical problems with their AIWA systems. I think it's great that AIWA is joining the AC3(Dolby Digital) train, but I question the performance of its receiver in the long run in comparison to more well-known brands (Denon, Sony). Think twice before you purchase a $300 receiver. In any case, when attaining a home theater system, the receiver is one of the most crucial pieces of the puzzle and it is worth it to spend the extra $$ for a "quality" system. . .

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Receiver with great features!!!!
I love this receiver. It is my first receiver and I am very impresed with Aiwa's great product. Even without a subwoofer everything sounds great because it has the extra T-bass witch adds fullness to the sound. But since it does have a output for one, when a subwoofer and the T-bass are combined it sounds wonderful. It is Dolby Digital Ready so you can add a DVD player to it for superior sound. It allows you to plug each speaker in seperately from the DVD player which is incredible. It comes with a remote but you don't even need it because you can control everything from the receiver itself. Overall, I recomend this item to anyone who wants to start a home theater system.

1-0 out of 5 stars dont buy this product
I boght this product at [a local store] for ... in dec 2002. After 4 months cd function did not work. After 5 months radio function did not work. Aiwa told me to ship it to Syracuse/a ... cost for [a shipper]/for warranty repair. Turns out Syracuse is an idependent repair shop who want authorization to repair it at ... per hour.or to ship it back to me at my cost, since the labour warranty is only for 3 months. Needless to say i will never buy another Aiwa product- quality and service advice is very poor.

4-0 out of 5 stars Light weight-has excellent sound-a bargin
I was looking for 2 players for my two son's rooms. I began the search looking for a CD/MP3 player. Disappointed in my Memorex, I looked at Sony and several others. But I found that they all lacked for something. I then went back to the tradional CD boomboxes and researched and bought two of these models. This unit has excellent sound for such a small player. It is very light and will be in rooms with small boys, so that is a plus. I was most impressed with the price. I got mine for ~$.... The sound is excellent. It has a preset EQ with Pop, Rock, Jazz, and no boost settings. The Jazz setting is the best IMHO and gives the music a little kick. The unit has a remote, a back light, timer, and will repeat all or a single track on a CD. Quite a plus for the little ones who like to hear things over and over again. So far, no problems. ...
