3-0 out of 5 stars Cool, but...
Ok, so I was walking in a Best Buy store and saw this cool toy. I picked it up, read the package, put it down, continued shopping, went back, read the package again and bought it. It has it's good and bad points.

Good points:
cheap ...; cool (small, pocket sized); expandable (has a compact flash card socket); photos can be set to 1.3, 2 or 3.1 megapixels; can connect via USB, hook up to your TV or if you use CF, just pull the chip and plug it into your CF reader.

Bad points:
It feels cheap, all plastic; 1t only has 16MB of memory built in, so you'll need to use that CF card (BTW, the CF card REPLACES the internal memory, not suplements it, so if you add a 16MB card, you still only have 16MB); no zoom (the book talks about 2x digital but I can't figure out how to activate it); NO FLASH (indoor pictures and videos are grainy and red tinted); pictures and video are easy to shoot, just open it up and press one button for stills or another for video; voice recording requires you to open it and select voice recording from a menu (guess they couldn't afford another button).

Misc:
It comes with all needed cables, a cheap tripod and they even throw in the batteries.
Files are stored as jpeg, avi and wav.
with just internal memory, figure 5-15 pictures, 2 to 4 minutes of video or 1 hour of audio. (256MB CF is now about $50.00, buy one).
I still think it's a neat toy, but next year's will be better.

4-0 out of 5 stars Well...
When I was going to buy this camera my thoughts were " Wow, a $100 camera." But the only problem is is that it doesn't have flash. When I read this I thought " Man, still for $100!" So I bought it and the first thing I tried was it in the dark. The pictures are dark but its not like it cannot take any pictures at all in the dark. What I found to my great intrest is that it takes great pictures and movies outside and that the microphone can take in alot of sound. What I noticed is not alot of people talked about the things that come with it. A tripod and USB cord is included so those are some nice things. A problem with them is that the USB cord tends to fall out very easy and that the tripod is very fragile. I recommend this camera for first time movie makes and I suggest "Windows Movie Maker" as a program that is very easy to use and should come along with your computer. I forgot to say that also a TV plug is included but it is horrible quailty on the TV. Another thing is the camera is small than it looks. Its about the size of an average adult's palm. I hope this was usefull to you all =). HAPPY SHOPPING!!!

5-0 out of 5 stars GREAT Cam.

1-0 out of 5 stars brithday
I got this for my 12th birthday. It says on the box "high qulity play back" for the tv. my son tried it and it was really blocky. Im just saying dont get this item

4-0 out of 5 stars Good starter camera
My 13 year old son bought this camera with his birthday money. It worked great for 10 minutes but then stopped working. We exchanged it for another just like it and so far have had no problems with it. Although it has no flash, it produces good pictures and videos considering the price. Given that most other cameras with these features are several times the price of this one, I think it is an affordable way to experiment with a digital camera/camcorder until you can afford a more substantial one. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful tablet for drawing!!!
I received this tablet as a gift last year to go along with Illustrator. I suggested this tablet because of price as opposed to the Wacom, because I wasn't sure how much I would use it, but found that I use it often. It has allowed me to do things more easily, and with more definition than I thought was possible.
Although I prefer a thinner drawing pen and had to get used to the click button, I soon got over the beginning clumsiness that accompanies using the larger instrument. That was the only drawback to the tablet. I've never used the mouse that came with it. This tablet works on both my PC and Mac, plugs and plays easily (USB), stores easily on end next to my computer, and has been very dependable now for almost a year.
I would highly recommend this tablet to anyone works in Illustrator, Photoshop, or any other art program. At just over $100, it's a real bargain.

4-0 out of 5 stars good for the money
I own several tablets. 2 Wacoms and 2 Aipteks. The 12000u is a good tablet but wacoms have a more solid feel and more features. Overall a the 12000u is a good value. I did have trouble after a few months of use. My pointer would jump around and was unresponsive at times. Being a tech head, I opened the tablet to see if I could fix it. I turns out that the ribbon contacts that connect the sensor page to the circuit board were oxydized so I just used an eraser to cleaned it and reconnected it. Works fine now.

4-0 out of 5 stars Read the instructions/dl the drivers
Using xp I have no problems (though only had for a few days) you have to dl the latest drivers because the software drivers that come with it are out of date. this device needs to be calibrated.. If you dont calibrate you will get unacceptable performance. the software is nothing to shout about.. works well with photoshop and paintshop pro.. doesnt have an eraser but if you know how to use the history command in photoshop it should only be an inconvenience.

1-0 out of 5 stars Awful, useless junk.
I bought this product thinking it was good value; amazing specs for a 5th of the price of its nearest competitors. Well, let me tell you, with Aiptek you get a hell of a lot less than you pay for.

It was dodgy right from the beginning: skipping, intermittent detection. These got worse the more I used it. Other problems arose: erratic cursor jittering as though the pen was switching in and out of relative working area modes; the buttons switched functionality occasionally; pressure sensitivity gave up. The thing was useless. I had it replaced. Little did I suspect that this was just the very beginning of my troubles. The replacement displayed its own personalised set of problems. As did the two iterations of pens after that.

Right now, I'm not sure what are hardware and what are software/driver problems. I suspect it is a hefty serving of both. The software manager they provide is utter crap - shoddy design in terms of usability, chock full of bugs. Also, because of the way they have integrated the drivers with the installation program, it's impossible to do it manually. Which means if Windows XP decides to install its own, incompatible, generic tablet drivers, there's nothing you can do about it!

And, as has been mentioned, the support team for Aiptek is useless. Aiptek America did't reply, Aiptek Germany wasted my time with idiotic "have you plugged it in?" questions then forwarded me to Aiptek Taiwan, to whom I had to explain everything again (several times), with whom there was a significant language barrier, who knew nothing more about their product than Aiptek Germany, and who finally stopped replying to me altogether.

Summary: Don't buy this product. It might work, in which case, good for you... but in my experience: I wasted £100 and a lot of time and effort.

1-0 out of 5 stars Stay away from this POS
I bought this thing to save some money @ work. Mistake. No OS X support (beta drivers have been released that don't work in Panther), and it hardly works in OS 9 or Windows XP.
Shoddy product (with a really sturdy base, surprisingly).

Spend the cash and get a Wacom. I've regretted this purchase from day one.
I might even give you mine. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars great value for the money
I've had my DV4500 for 2 months now, and I continue to enjoy using it. It's big pluses are it's portability and ease of use. The controls are well designed, and it's a quite versatile little gizmo. I bought it because I wanted an inexpensive still and video camera, but I find I am using it just as much as an mp3 player and voice recorder. The pictures it takes are very good, and there is a built in flash for indoor and low light shooting. The biggest downside (for me) is that it is not compatible with mac computers, only pcs. Also, the video quality drops under low light conditions. I hope Aiptek corrects these deficiencies in future models. It uses standard AA batteries, but consumes them very quickly, so get some rechargeables. But for less than $150, you can have a wonderful camera that you can always have on you, and capture spontaneous moments as you please.

4-0 out of 5 stars Where's my 4 megapixel camera?
I ordered this camera from this site and it does everything I expected it to do except I found out that this camera is only a 3.1 megapixel camera even though it says 4 on the box and instructions. In the digital camera mode you only have the options of 1, 2, and 3.1 megapixels. I'm still pretty mad at how Aiptek lied, but I'm getting over it. So if anyone can get their DV4500 to take a picture in 2300x1800(4mp)instead of 2000x1500(3.1mp)please say it in your review. Besides that problem this is a great camera and will be alot of fun, but get some rechargeable batteries first.

5-0 out of 5 stars Just what you are looking for
I bought this camera for a few vacations that I was going on and it did everything that I wanted it to. Camcorder isnt bad and this thing can play mp3's! I found the picture quality to be good
3-0 out of 5 stars Nothing Great
This is just a toy. None of the features really excell in any way but they do the basics. The camera's ok, but the flash runs the batteries down pretty quickly. The video camera was ok too. The mp3 player alphabetizes the songs if youl load them in a group and there's no way to sort through them without going through the whole list to find the one you want. The body feels a little cheap and the flap covering the head phone jack is a bit cumbersome. On the up side the menus are pretty intuitive and it's easy to use and the software's OK. I returned mine after about three days and I got the SV-AV25 by Panasonic. I recomend the SV-AV25, and you can get a good deal on one if you check e-bay.

1-0 out of 5 stars Don't waste your time
This was the worse thing I could have spent my money on! The quality of the pictures and the camcorder was horrible.
The pictures come out fuzzy and grainy. When I tired to use the camcorder part, that was even worse. i am in the process of returning mine! ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Nifty little gadget!
For the price you pay, this is a pretty good camera! It's handily pocket-sized, takes decent screen-resolution pictures, and stores more than 40 of them at high quality. Macro focus makes for excellent closeup shots. the Pencam 1.3 is excellent for web or non-professional-level digital photography.

On the down side, however, it's only good for bright light conditions, high-contrast photos sometimes suffer from aliasing (pixelated edges), the video feature is near-useless, 2 AAA batteries rarely last more than a week, and worst of all, there are no Apple drivers, so I need to do my photo transfers through VirtualPC on my iBook.

this is a sweet deal on a fairly good mini-camera. I've been using it for art photos on my photolog, and I'm quite happy with the output, and the fact that I can take quick, discreet pictures without attracting too much notice is icing on the cake. :)

3-0 out of 5 stars Aiptek Mini Pencam 1.3
This cam is really nice but there is a downside. The button for taking pics is very fragile. I tried calling Aiptek customer service to get it repaired but so far no respond from them yet (I just bought it 5-2-4, it only lasted for less than 30 days). I called and e-mailed Aiptek again, but still no respond. This cam is quite a deal but mine is broke right now so I am really really piss off. Can someone help me get this cam fix, since it is still under Manufacture warranty.

3-0 out of 5 stars Adequate Webcam
I think this is a simple case of deciding what you want. The Aiptek camera tries to cater to consumers that don't know what they want. Its an adequate webcam, an adequate take anywhere digital camera for very small photos or large web pictures for your website or online auctions, and an adequate camera for taking small movies. But with that said, the camera does not excel in any areas.

-Webcam- the actual quality is very nice when compared to some other usb webcams (but it is more expensive) and it can be powered by the USB connection. But there are some problems with Yahoo Messenger, so if you want to use Yahoo with this webcam, beware, there may be some minor hiccups. It comes with a decent stand, but the base sometimes will give way to the rigidity of the USB cord and will tend to pull the camera over. The webmovies are almost unusable. Apparently this camera uses some kind of little used codec that most people don't have unless they have the aiptek software... so don't count on sharing small webmovies with other people.
Like all cameras of this sort, low light is its mortal enemy.

-Digital camera- the camera MSRP is about $80. There are some cheap sub $100 cameras that are 2 megapixels. I know I personally saw a 3 megapixel camera from kodak for $100. So is it really worth it to buy this camera for 1.2 megapixel resolution? On the plus side, the camera does offer a macro mode which I have used to varying success for taking pictures for online auctions and this camera does have the advantage of being very small (if you are a spy or something?). Also I found the memory adequate if not robust. In all probability you will not be taking many pictures with this camera anyways.

-Battery Life- If this is mainly a webcam, the battery life really doesn't matter since it is powered by USB. But if you use this for a camera I found that the camera will last a few days of sporadic phototaking. Purchase of rechargable batteries are recommended.

Summary- My recommendation is to know what you want. Do you want a webcam or a small digital camera? If you MUST have both and you can't afford to spend a little extra to buy both, then the Aiptek camera is an adequate compromise.

2-0 out of 5 stars Bigger is sometimes better....
I purchased this camera during a vacation and quickly found that as long as you are outside, in direct sunlight, the camera works fine. However, if you try to take pictures indoor or in the evening, the quality is lacking. The pictures come out dark if at all. Would recommend a different digital camera.

5-0 out of 5 stars Amazing!!!
Portable, versatile, efficient and, at last but not least, cheap. This little camera is very lite, what makes it easy to use it not only at home, but at work also. It's great to take pix and no one even notice what's going on. I recommend! ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Sufficient.
The tablet itself is good. It's not a Wacom. It's nothing expensive, but for the money you pay for the size of the tablet and the basic functions that go with it it's well worth it. Don't like the software that goes with it? Download GIMP. It's free, legal, and works much like the always-expensive, always-pirated Adobe Photoshop. The mouse is basically useless. It was the first thing to go.

A replacement pen is $10 off of the Aiptek site, which I find a little absurd as far as the price goes. The tablet itself is $50 as a refurbished item off of the Aiptek website, which is around a $40 average savings off of the sellers here. Replacement drivers are downloadable, replacement software + drivers are purchased for $5 off of the Aiptek site, which is kind of stupid because the software is a joke, as others have said, and the drivers are downloadable.

The support on the Aiptek site is decent. You can download the drivers for most operating systems (I believe all 98+ operating systems are supported) and if you run Linux, you can download Linux-based drivers if you Google search them or if you look on Aiptek's FAQ. (Why Aiptek does not just host the bloody drivers themselves is beyond me, but, whatever.)

Overall... I'd say it's well worth it, especially if you're looking to just play around and doodle, and possibly upgrade to a more professional tablet later on.

1-0 out of 5 stars 1 star is generous for this waste of money
After purchasing my Aiptek pen, I noticed it would lose it's pressure sensitivity, and the dpi quoted on the package was not accurate at all. After calling Aiptek customer service I sent it back for repairs. 3 weeks later, after many phone calls to track it down, it was finally sent back (I actually only live 30 miles away). It still doesn't work properly and dealing with Aiptek customer service was a nightmare. In the end, Aiptek would not solve the problem, I purchased a Wacom tablet (with outstanding results) and now use my Aiptek tablet for a very large drink coaster. Avoid this time/money waster at all cost.

3-0 out of 5 stars Not the greatest.........
Okay, well it's not the greatest tablet. I have the older version, but they operate the same I presume. Nothing is "new" about it besides the price tag and the appearance (the pen looks the same, it's just the mouse that's different and the tablet part). I didn't even bother to try to use the mouse it came with it. I tossed it aside and took out it's battery, and the tablet itself is what you would expect for it's price. Don't bother with the bundled software, I got Photoshop and Corel Painter, so who needs some cheesy software. The pressure is okay and it's tracking of the cursor with the pen is pretty good. Going to Wacom's site makes it seem like their tablet is the only one that can be used. The tablet also works fine with Windows xp with no hitch. Overall, it's probably best if it's your first tablet and you aren't ready to fork over the $200 plus for a Wacom Intous 2.

3-0 out of 5 stars Fine for amatuers, insufficient for pros
I've used this particular tablet for several years now and have recently upgraded to the Wacom Intuos. The tablet itself is sturdy and very durable with a metal backing. The cursor accelleration does not quite match the stylus, but the position is accurate, and the sensitivity is adequate. The setup options for the tablet are vastly inferior to Wacom's control panel, however, and the mouse (as on most tablets) is a joke. It's actually a good buy if you're just going to play around with it (as you get a larger tablet for your money than the graphire or Intuos), but if you're serious about your art, you will probably want to spend the extra money for the features and software the Wacom tablets provide.

1-0 out of 5 stars The pen works okay, but the software and mouse are a joke.
When I opened the box and took out the pad, it seemed really durable and heavy. "Nice," I thought all happy and excited to try this gadget out. Then I took out the mouse and the darn thing rattled like a box of rocks. I thought it was broke but closer inspection into an aperture under the battery compartment revealed some kind of electromagnet suspended by a thin wire, which clanked around. "Cheesy," I thought, starting to get worried. Maybe the mouse isn't supposed to be that way, maybe it actually was broke, but it worked in its own crummy fashion. Compared to my optical mouse, using this cheesy thing felt like doing surgery with a pickaxe. Then the real problems started. They have bundled a drawing program, "Art Dabbler," that is supposed to complement the basic functions of this hardware -- the ability to utilize variable line thickness by varying the pen pressure, etc. The software application wouldn't even launch on my XP system: I was given an error message, "not enough available memory to run art dabbler." Well, I have 1 GB of DDR RAM installed on my Pentium 4, 2.66 GHz machine. I did a little snooping online and found that this software is three or four years old, and pretty much incampatible with XP. There were some suggestions on a public forum (where others were having the same problem) about changing virtual memory settings or disabling the paging file completely, and even if one were inclined to tamper with such settings for the sake of one outdated program, none of these things worked for me when I tried them. Even with a tweaked or disabled paging file setting, still the same message about insufficient memory. I also tried re-installing and running the program in compatibility mode, with the same result: "not enough memory." Corel, who supposedly took over this "Art Dabbler" property from Meta Creations, doesn't even acknowledge it on their website. That's how behind-the-times it is. And Aiptek's site has no postings addressing this issue. They have chosen to bundle their hardware with garbage software. So guess what? The whole kit and kaboodle gets returned. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Not a good deal!
I purchased this camera and have given it little use. The zoom on it is worthless, the flash is too intense and creates whiteout of subjects up close, the SD does not take so all you really have is 16mb internal, the software to install the drivers is worthless since it works only part of the time. i have even tried to get customer serivce from the manufacturer for the above problems and they were no help. I DO NOT RECCOMEND THIS CAMERA. i thought it would be a good buy as a childs camera, but it doesn't work as the ad describes.

3-0 out of 5 stars I still can't decide
I bought this as a replacement to my APS camera to go on a cruise with. The pictures are great with the small fact that anything moving is very fuzzy. My fraternity was in a dance competition and all the pictures of them dancing were a big blur. Maybe it is something wrong with the camera. Movie mode is excellent as the picture is very clear and the frame rate is good. Works great as a web cam as well. For $100 this is a good little camera. I hope to figure out how to fix the blurryness soon.

1-0 out of 5 stars Drivers don't work with Windows XP Pro
I just got this camera. I was happy until trying to install and use it. Looks nice, comes with great software, but it didn't work for me at all. no updated driver onsite or support. It does look nice.

4-0 out of 5 stars Fun little camera!
This camera takes great pictures and I enjoy using it. I still cannot believe it was so inexpensive. If you use the flash on the camera alot, it eats up the batteries pretty fast. But without the flash it lasts for quite awhile. The picture quality is great but when you zoom in at the highest level, the picture becomes fuzzy. Overall I enjoy owning this camera and it's perfect for taking pictures for fun and to email to friends. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars poor product for the money
Very frustrating, plastic stand for the camera. No picture in less than daylight, sound is ok. Instant on doesn't work unless on batteries, so it's useless while plugged in. EVERYTHING interferes with the picture. CAVEAT EMPTOR

2-0 out of 5 stars I should have read to reviews
I,m upset I have had the product one day and my volume doesnt work.. I had no Idea that I would not be able to see my daughter at night.. Plus you pay more here than if you go straight to aiptek web site... I cant return it to a store I have to pay to put back in the mail...

2-0 out of 5 stars Not worth the money
I bought this monitor for my five month old. I am not sure why I even bothered.. you can't see anything at night unless the overhead light is on. Do you want to sleep with the light on? Neither does my son! Otherwise it is very easy to set up and you can see pretty clearly when the lights are on.

2-0 out of 5 stars Nice, but not practical
This camera was beautiful when we tested it. The picture was clear and the sound was reasonable. However, when we put it in the baby's room at night, there was no picture. We had to have all the lights on in his room to make the picture visable. So, as a security camera, I'm sure this will work great, but as a baby monitor, it's not very practical. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars I have had this camera 2 years, it's great !!
I mostly use this camera for taking pictures through my computer using the live camera viewing and the software that came with it. The pictures are big, clear, and come out very good. It's very easy to use, it fits in my hand, and the batterys seem to last a long time. Very durable, I throw it in my purse, my car, my desk, and it always works fine. For the money, ease of use, and the great pictures, you can't go wrong with this little camera.

1-0 out of 5 stars Cute piece of JUNK!
I can't get the camera to work on my Windows XP. Batteries seem to be dieing within hours. Then tested batteries and they are fully charged, yet camera won't turn on. And there's NO OFF button! And it doesn't record SOUND! How can a web cam not have a mic? And who wants video without sound? And the Compact Flash card is NOT removable so you can't insert a larger (256MG) card if you wanted to. I've wasted 2 full days trying to get this camera to work on my PC with NO luck. Don't waste your time. It's not worth it. AipTek is JUNK! Back to Best Buy to return it...

4-0 out of 5 stars For the cost, it's great.
I've read some poor reviews about this little cam and I felt I needed to defend this thing. I paid $30 for it, for that meager sum I recieved a web cam that is flawless. Now the lack of a flash should tell you that as a digital camera, it's better off for use outside. I don't really use the 14 second (or so) of video mode as there is no sound and such a low time limit. On my pc, I run "XP" and have had no problems with the driver or the picture software. I've had it for seven months and have since bought a $100 digital camera. My wife and teenage daughter may want to take pictures at the same time as I so both cameras get taken since after all, they call it a pen-cam due to its small size. It was a real bargin!

4-0 out of 5 stars It;s ok
This camera is okay but sometimes the batteries will die and all your pictures will be gone this is good for younger kids but not for older kids because it is more of a toy than a digital camera

5-0 out of 5 stars It works on my computer.
I am using this as a fun stuff, sometimes a web-cam.
Nothing goes wrong with this whenever I upgraded my
system to XP. I am also thinking of buying another
higher spec Aiptek digital camera. Sometimes, I've found
reviews said something like "don't buy Aiptek....", I
was really curious: Do they really know or use all products
by Aiptek? Or, I believe, that were again some commerical
tricks - don't buy theirs, buy ours. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Having some fun with this mpeg recorder
Currently I have a Canon Powershot 230 Elph, which I am very happy with. However the 3 minute videos it captures are not in an mpeg format that I could email or playback without Canon's software.

Picked this DV4500 up for $120. and have found it very easy to use.Records mpegs, which are not the greatest quality, but very good for the price paid for it.Small and light enough to carry anywhere, about the size of the Elph camera 2" x 4".Using it to record and keep on a CD my 3 1/2 yr. old daughter singing songs and dancing, just family things that I can email to relatives...easier and better than sending cards.Think you will be happy with it if you are just looking for an inexpensive, convenient mpeg recorder.Heard Best Buy stopped selling it because it was cutting into their high-end priced video camera sales.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great Little Thing

1-0 out of 5 stars avoid this for now
As of this date (June 2004) the Windows XP USB drivers (updated version 1.1 from the Aiptek web site) for this camera seem troublesome. The Aiptek web site does not offer useful troubleshooting for this relatively new model as of yet.Do not buy this newly released camera at this point. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Problem solver
I've used this easy to operate videophone (paired with an Aiptek 2000S) with highly satisfactory results in several applications. It allowed an elderly relative to stay in her home after she became forgetful about taking her medication. A slow speed, high quality setting allowed remote verification that she actually was taking her pills. After she moved into a nursing home, I used the system briefly in a business surveillance application. Now it's used by our elderly relative and a favorite niece to keep in touch via long distance. The system delivers surprisingly good image quality, given its POTS modem speed, which averages 28.8kbps (some wonder why it's not faster...33.6kbps is the fastest you can get in a dialup connection without an ISP). The unit's camera works in low light conditions, but in dim light the pictures tend to be noisy and lack color saturation. A little attention to room lighting produces surprisingly good, colorful pictures. Aiptek also includes a "PC" videophone mode, which allows the device to work modem-to-modem with some PC videophones (depends on the PC modem, which can't be a "winmodem", and the PC camera software). The system is indeed easy to operate: we purposely selected the 2000C unit with integrated screen, which requires no adjustment of operating controls at all, for our elderly relative. With new concerns about airline travel, now may be a good time to consider this product.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great ProductValue
I purchased this product so that distant grandparents in NY can see their new granddaughter. After researching and testing all of the vendors (Starview, Motion Media, Metaeye, Infoview and Aiptek) I purchased this product. It is extremely easy to use and my computer illiterate parents had no trouble getting this hooked up. Here is the scoop on picture quality: All of the competing products are going to display the video at about the same speed. Since a standard telephone line is used for 2-way communication with video, a 33.6Kbps modem is all that is needed. Don't get fooled by the marketing gimmicks of 56K modems since they can only transmit at this speed in one direction and this is too much bandwidth for a standard telephone line. Picture quality of a TV broadcast is around 30 frames per second (fps). All of the products I tested broadcast at 15fps maximum and this quality looks good and is very clear (I was surprised!!). I could easily see my parents and the delay was only very slight. The key with this is, if you use the smallest picture size the video will transfer very fast and you wont notice any delay. I use the middle size and it works fine. Although the screen is 4" in diameter, you really can see a lot. Of all of the products I tried, the AIPTEK was the easiest to use and again picture quality was great for all of these products. Cost for AIPTEK was lower than some of the other units.
Bottom line: This product and concept is amazing and it makes my parents feel so much better when they can see their kids and grandkids 3000miles away on the videophone versus just a phone call. I was a skeptic at first but now I am sold and will be buying more

Amazon.com Review

When you call your family and friends why not see them too, in full color? The Hyper VideoPhone 2000S transforms your existing TV and telephone into a complete videophone system.

Setting up the Hyper VideoPhone 2000S was fairly easy. We just plugged in the AC adapter, connected the telephone and telephone line cord, connected the audio and video cables between our TV and the Hyper VideoPhone, and opened the protective camera shutter. When we turned on the unit and lifted the telephone receiver, the Hyper VideoPhone displayed our surroundings on the TV screen. The entire setup process was straightforward, taking only a few minutes.

To place a videophone call, just lift the handset, dial the number, and talk normally. If your correspondent has any H.324-compliant videophone, then press # to display the on-screen menus and press 1 to start the video. In our test of the Hyper VideoPhone 2000S, we called a similar Hyper VideoPhone (model 2000C), and 20 seconds later the two units connected; another 15 seconds was required to establish the video link.

Placing a lamp nearby and staying within 2 to 3 feet of the camera resulted in the best facial images, but placing the unit on top of our TV and sitting about 8 feet away produced an acceptable picture on the receiving unit. The images were somewhat grainy and "jerky" as people moved.

Through the on-screen menus, you can view your own image, that of your correspondent, or both at the same time. Other settings include auto answer for security applications; automatic monitoring with password protection; adjustable picture quality, size, and frame speed; electronic pan, tilt, and zoom camera controls; and high-resolution snapshot capability. A privacy feature lets you turn off the video camera electronically, or you can slide the shutter switch above the camera to manually close the camera's protective shutter.

Overall we found the video quality acceptable, considering the relatively slow 33.6kbps data rate, and the setup was easy. The Hyper VideoPhone provides a fun and functional way to keep in touch with your family, friends, or business associates.
