Are there places in your home where you'd love to enjoy music, but don't want to lay speaker wire or drill holes to get it there? Advent's wireless powered speaker system lets you import music from CD, radio, DVD, or any audio source to nearly any room in the house.

Advent's AW870 speaker system uses the FM (frequency-modulation) technique employed in radio to broadcast audio to the two loudspeakers, each of which houses its own 15-watt amplifier. The speakers, which are identical, offer a roll-on power/volume switch and a separate switch for designating either speaker as left, right, or mono--highly desirable when playing with different positions. (If you're listening to monaural material--including anything recorded prior to about 1954--the Mono switch will allow you to cut down on transmission static without compromising music delivery.)

The AW870 system comes with two main parts: the transmitter and the speakers, all of which require close proximity to an AC outlet unless you opt to battery-power the speakers. The transmitter, about five inches in diameter, plugs into a wall outlet and hooks into your desired audio source via a single stereo RCA cable.

We positioned the transmitter's tuner arbitrarily while setting up and were pleased to find that the speakers' tuner zeroed in on the appropriate frequency with little adjustment. In fact, the thing that gave us the most trouble was the fact that the speakers use individual volume controls. With no master "balance" knob, the two speakers have to be manually adjusted for equal volume.

The transmitter range seemed surprisingly large, though static and crackle increased as we got farther away from the transmitter. Listening from across a room worked best, though the omnidirectional transmitter works through walls and floors as well. Powered with batteries (eight "C" cell, not provided), the AW870 speakers make ideal portable deck speakers when you don't feel like moving your whole stereo just to enjoy the nice weather.

The sound from our test CDs closely resembled that of clear FM radio: dynamically compressed and slightly hissy even at its quietest. As speakers go, these are decent but not great. As with any sound system, a boost in convenience often requires a small sacrifice in quality, and this is true of the AW870 wireless system.

Advent's AW770 WirelessStereo Headphone is a wonder of modern home-electronicstechnology, rendering clear, full-bodied sound from CD players,VCRs, televisions, boomboxes, and other audio sources--all thewhile giving you complete freedom to move about.

The AW770 comes with two main parts: the transmitter and theheadphones. About five inches in diameter, the transmitter plugs into a standard wall outlet and hooks into your desired audio source via a single stereo RCA cable. It has onecontrol wheel for tuning and another that serves as master volume. The headphones have their own volume control as well. In our tests, we found that transmission noise was lowest when the transmitter volume was left at maximum. We positioned the transmitter's tuner arbitrarily while setting up and found that the headset's tuner zeroed in on the appropriate frequency with little adjustment.

The transmitter range, rated at 300 feet, seemed surprisingly large, but sound proved enjoyable at distances in excess of300 feet. However, static and crackle did intrude as distance fromthe transmitter increased. Some locations required us to "retune"the headphones for clearer reception, but in general, the systemworked smoothly once it was set.

The sound from our test CD closely resembled that of clear FMradio: dynamically compressed, slightly hissy at its quietest,and somewhat pronounced in the high frequencies though very listenable. The compact headphones,which can be powered by either standard or rechargeable Ni-Cad AAAbatteries (supplied), sounded warm and full in the bass though slightly harsh at the top end, especially at very loud levels. However, this effect was counteracted by the headphones' sealed-enclosure design, which blocked out enough ambient noise so that we never hadto crank them too high.

Forconvenience, comfort, and good overall sound, the Advent AW770 isa steal.

Great for wireless uses
If you are looking for a great WIRELESS option, this is certainly the way to go. The range is great--I can listen to them anywhere in the house or in the yard. The sound is crisp and clear, though there is a minute amount of background hiss because of the FM transmission. Initial charging takes awhile to hold (a full 24 hours), but after that an overnight charge generally lasts 4-5 hours. The bass is reduced standard, but if compensated by equalizing at the source, you can make them sound great.

Why the emphasis on WIRELESS? Because let's face it, their not a $100 pair of corded phones. The slight FM background hiss, the ocassional static and RF interference, and the need to charge them can at times be annoying. Corded phones typically have no hiss, great response with big bass, and can be less bulky. But I particularly needed wireless phones and find that they are great for all of my needs. I would recommend them to anyone who hates being tied to a chair or small range when wearing headphones.

If hi-fi unity sound is your goal, look for some corded phones. If you want cordless, these are certainly worth the money.

Decent sound but tuning and recharging them a chore
I was moderately dissapointed with these but don't know how they compare with other wireless headphones on the market. Their sound is comparable to a decent set of plug in headphones with nice booming bass. The problem is if they aren't tuned properly there is alot of interference and static which makes them virtually impossible to listen to. Tuning them requiews fiddling with 3 or 4 dials both on the headphones themselves and on the back of the unit. Getting a good clear sound free of background noise can often take up to half an hour of fiddling. Also, if you move around a lot you can throw the reception off meaning you have to go back and fiddle with the dials again. The battery has a life of 7 hours meaning if you plug them in to the recharger whenever you're not using them you'll probably be ok. I would say if you're desperate for a pair of cordless phones these are probably good but you can easily buy a pair of good quality non-wireless phones for the same price or cheaper and save yourself a lot of hassle.

Easily breakable headset, charging suggestion
I'm not brutal with equipment, but in a few short weeks, the flimsy plastic part that holds the ear pieces to the headset broke on one side. Within a month or two the other side went as well forcing me to use office paper clamps to hold the whole thing together.

I use them in bed late at night when the household is asleep. A second convenient bedside charger would be nice. I tend to put them down on the bedside table before I doze off rather than get up and walk across the room hook it up for recharge. If you're a late night TV watcher, you too might call this justifiable laziness. Too many times I put them on the next night and find the battery's down.

I honestly think that before I replace them with another wireless, I'd find a way to sneak an extension wire across the room through attic or basement space and go with a standard wired headphone.

Experimental Head Gear
I thought wireless would allow me to move freely while listening to music, but that has been anything but the case. With my pair, there is a constant 'fuzz' almost like I am listening to an old AM radio. It falls out of frequency so often I find myself adjusting the tuner usually after 3 or 4 songs. If I simply move four feet away from the receiver I am punished by extremely loud distortion. It's painful. Since I've had these I've yet to be able to find the 'perfect' frequency, never getting the clear sound I had hoped for. In addition to the flawed usability, these are a lot bigger than they look and a just a little too cumbersome. I've learned that with wireless headphones it's best to spend a little extra for better quality. But it cheap, buy it twice.

Decent sound for music, poor for talk
I had to return these phones as they were essentially unusable for spoken words. I use headphones on the computer for both music listening and internet phone calls. Music sounded okay, although there was some detectable hissing. However, talk (or anything with silent patches) was very choppy. You could make out what was being said, but it made extended calls somewhat aggravating.

This review is for the Advent AW720. Don't buy it.

1. Very weak battery life.

According to the manual, it takes 12 hours to completely charge the Ni-Cd battery and a completely charged battery yields 4 hours of playtime. 12/4 is unacceptable. The weakest of Sony headphones have batteries that charge for 24 hours but yield 30 hours playtime. So if you charge the weakest Sony headphone battery for 12 hours, you get 15 hours, or 3 times the charge! That's more like it! The Advent battery makes you feel limited and I don't like feeling limited. Second, this may sound silly, it costs you to charge the headphones. If I didn't live in a dorm, I'd care! Those nickels can add up!

2. Poor clarity for anything except music (no dvd, videos, etc.)

Really, when I'm not using my headphones, I always have them charging! I always start off with 100% charged battery. And I play around with tuning knobs on both the headphone and the base. I do everything yet I cannot get rid of the "audio scratches" when watching a DVD on tv or watching a video on my computer. True, the careful tuning can get rid of the "hiss" but the "audio scratches" will be there at least every ten seconds no matter what you do when using the headphones for anything but music.

I tried to use the "special connection" (for my dvd player)that they give you rather than the typical headphone jack connection. Batteries were 75% charged. As usual, with proper tuning, the hiss was gone. But the "audio scratches" stayed! Those scratches totally ruin your movie watching experience! Second, I had to crawl down, disconnect the tv audio input nad then connect the headphone input to the dvd. When I finished trying to use the headphone, I had to crawl done again, disconnect and reconnect the tv audio. Who wants to go through that trouble for a "special connection" that doesn't really work? And how is it even possible if the battery is so weak that after half way through the movie it is signifcantly uncharged? Pathetic!

That being said, the sound quality of this headphone is great for music from my computer. No doubt about it. There are very few "audio scratches" there and with proper tuning the hiss will go down. Also, contrary to some reports, these headphones can be very, very loud indeed without being harsh!

3. Not very durable (then again, how many are?)

Close to the ear cup, there is a strip that is very easy to wear and tear. The ear cups themselves are of hollow plastic (although this is OK). Every time I put on the headphone, I feel afraid to break that part. Even the ear cups are poorly connected to the stem (this doesn't seem to be trouble). I admit it is easy to reinforce that weak area near the cup with duck tape and it won't trouble you at all, but who wants that! But then again, how many durable headphones are there? I wouldn't put my money on the RCA 160 Whip or whatever. I'm sure you can find something better anyway.

4. Range is very good!

I live in a dorm where there are thick walls. I can get out of my room and up to 30 (not 300) feet in the hallway and I can listen to music with no trouble. Hey, that's not bad is it, considering the fact that some headphones promise only up to 24 (of course, you know what they promise isn't the same as it really is, so factor that in). I still think 30 feet near thick walls is very impressive. And I'll bet that if it was a more open area, I'd get even better range. Impressive for that and probably top notch!

Conclusion:

Don't buy it. The battery is unacceptable. Very limited play time. And you are limited only to music. You can't watch movies or videos or watch tv with this headphone! Oh no you can't, not without getting an annoying "audio scratch" every the seconds even if the battery if fully charged and you use the optimum connection they tell you on DVD! And that is unacceptable because it ruins your movie experience!

I paid 17 dollars for these headphones right here at amazon (I hear the current price is 64!). I'd say you cap your price to 40 dollars (be patient, there'll be some merchant selling for a 40 dollars or less) and buy a Sony. I hear that even the Sonys are very poor, but at least you get a stronger battery?

Great Product from Acoustic Research
I bought my AW791 from Ebay a year ago and all I can say is it's money well spent. It sells for about $200 but I got mine cheap for $120. I had a problem with to much hiss at first, but it went away as I continued to use it. I also tried different types of connections and cables and I had to settle for Monster Cables. I found out that utilizing the Digital Coax or Optical input jacks at the back of the unit, combined with FULLY CHARGED batteries, (this is very important) would eliminate the hiss. It has Dolby Digital capability so I use the Surround Sound when I'm watching a movie and switch to Dolby Stereo whenever I want to just listen to music. The Bass is hefty and the Surround effect is fantastic. Your ears will be ungulfed in sound details, which in my opinion can rival any sound from a studio room. You can connect 3 audio sources to this baby, 2 Digital and 1 Analog audio inputs. I connected 1 Monster M1000D Coax to my computer and 1 Monster Cable Ref Optical to my Onkyo receiver outs, and I can walk around the house listening to just about anything.

Great Sound
I shopped all around!! The AW791 Dolby Digital are the best value on the market. The sound is great, you have the freedom to move from room to room with only minimal sound loss. No "line of site" restrictions like the IR wireless headphones. Two "Digital" inputs and one analog means you can plug in an array of sources. Battery life exceeds all others. They are comfortable to wear for extended periods for the real long movies. The ONLY thing to look out for is the pivot point on each ear piece. It is a weak joint that can break if twisted wrong. Make certain to put on and take off with ease.
All around a great product and if you shop around you will NOT find an exact product like it. Way to go AR!

First off: there is no tuning knob on the base so they (other reviews) must be referencing another model. (aw721?)
This model has three channel selectors

I got mine off ebay for $50.

pro's:
-works great, little hiss when its turned on, but this is because it is auto tuning ( 3 seconds)
-takes digital inputs (optical too)
-volume goes way up.
-comparable if not better than my Sony MDR-CD380
-freedom from my mp3 player, pc, etc
-? interferes with my cell phone's incomming signal. (side-effect, but nice "Feature" ;)

con's:
-feels weak. dont think it will survive a drop or sit-on

-the light on the base when charging does not glow. (I dont know if it should, I must call them)
-Batteries dont seem to charge. Maybe this problem is limited to my set.

Not Suitable for Bed Use
My primary use of these is to watch movies while in bed before sleep. Problem is that headphones are so large, uncomfortable. so I made mod to them and installed small minijack in the headphones which allows me to plug in another, smaller headphone set for use in bed. AR should really have thought about it and provided such a jack. Not a major modification to accomplish.

As to quality of headphone sound, do get some "static" or interference now and again when headphones are only 10 feet away from transmitter base station. This product is not 100% clean of static or interference. Interesting though that although get some static or noise only 10 feet away, can actually hear sound in headphones some 100 feet away. Good quality sound reproduction. Have had to replace rechargable batteries once already and have not owned unit a year yet.

Never owned another pair of wirelss and so can not compare to others. Good sound reproduction but not 100 % free of wireless static or interference and whole product is plastic, plastic, plastic and have already broken one side of unit while using in bed. Gurgling Sound Kept Me Awake
Pros:
- Relatively easy to drain out water from the tanks
