The WAAS difference

100 meters: Accuracy of the original GPS system, which was subject to accuracy degradation under the government-imposed Selective Availability (SA) program. 15 meters: Typical GPS position accuracy without SA. 3-5 meters: Typical differential GPS (DGPS) position accuracy. Less than 3 meters: Typical WAAS position accuracy.

WAAS is a system of satellites and ground stations that provide GPS signal corrections, giving you even better position accuracy. How much better? Try an average of up to five times better. A WAAS-capable receiver can give you a position accuracy of better than three meters 95 percent of the time. And you don't have to purchase additional receiving equipment or pay service fees to utilize WAAS.

How it Works
WAAS consists of approximately 25 ground reference stations positioned across the United States that monitor GPS satellite data. Two master stations, located on either coast, collect data from the reference stations and create a GPS correction message. This correction accounts for GPS satellite orbit and clock drift plus signal delays caused by the atmosphere and ionosphere. The corrected differential message is then broadcast through one of two geostationary satellites, or satellites with a fixed position over the equator. The information is compatible with the basic GPS signal structure, which means any WAAS-enabled GPS receiver can read the signal.

Who benefits from WAAS?
Currently, WAAS satellite coverage is only available in North America. There are no ground reference stations in South America, so even though GPS users there can receive WAAS, the signal has not been corrected and thus would not improve the accuracy of their unit. For some users in the U.S., the position of the satellites over the equator makes it difficult to receive the signals when trees or mountains obstruct the view of the horizon. WAAS signal reception is ideal for open land and marine applications. WAAS provides extended coverage both inland and offshore compared to the land-based DGPS (differential GPS) system. Another benefit of WAAS is that it does not require additional receiving equipment, while DGPS does.

Beat smy Navtech in car system...
I have a 3 year old Navtech based CD GPS system in my Volvo and purchased this device to use in my older SUV that has no GPS system installed. I first tried using the new Streetpilot on a recent trip to Dubuque Iowa from Chicago; using it and the in car systems simultaneously to compare them. The Garmin SP 2620 outperfomed the Navtech installed system hands down. Although the in car system found satellites instantly the Garmin only took about 10 seconds to find them on start up. And it is MUCH faster on route calculations and more importatnly recalculations, about 3x faster. The in car sytem could not locate the exact street address in Dubuque even though I had the Iowa CD disk installed. The Garmin unit did. The details on local businesses was MUCH better with the Garmin. The map was clearer and was better illuminated. Only things I'd like to have in the Garmin would be a two map display option (for differing zooms of the the same route at the same time) and a display of the remianing miles on the main route display, you can get it but it's on another routing description page. The Garmin does display more immediately useful info such as time and distance to next turn so this is a very minor quibble. It is solid, extremely well built unit and mounts very nicely. It tilts and twists to optimize viewing. The "beanbag" friction mount works very well. The nice thing about the portable system is it's portabilty to other cars and rentals, for instance you can loan it to friends and family if you wish! Furthermore, upgrading is very easy via the Garmin web site whereas updates for my Volvo Navtech in car system have been rare and expensive. The hard drive in the Garmin is a memory card which I can see being enlarged if necessary but the current 512mb card has plenty of map details on it. A new CD disk set for my in car system costs over $200, the Garmin updates so far are free. Overall a stellar value and a device that exceeded my expectations in every way. If you travel by car (and who really likes flyng anyway?)in the US and/or Canada, get one, you'll love it.

Love this thing!!!!! We took a road trip from Illinois to Tennessee, then on to Florida and back without ever having to look at a map. It led us everywhere we wanted to go flawlessly.

Had it for a month now!
I got this as a birthday present from my beau in May and during that time, I was moving to be with him from Houston to The Bay Area, California. We drove for 3 days with the Streetpilot from state-to-state... we had no problems with it. It was helpful as it found our hotel/motel rooms, places to eat 50 miles away, rest areas and more!

It's very very easy to use and with it being a touch screen, it's a no-brainer...

However.. the reason I gave it 4 stars out of 5 is because now since I live in The Bay Area and want to explore new restaurants (instead of frequenting at the same ones), the GPS had given me 3-4 restaurants that are no longer there. It gets frustrating when you see a busted building... TWICE when HUNGRY. We settled for Red Lobster (the joy.). Since learning this, I now have a tendency to call them from my cell phone (the GPS will give you street address and phone number).

ALSO, as I took my family to San Francisco, the GPS lost it's satellite quite a few times. I think it was because of the tall buildings.

Also, when we tried to go to Golden Gate Park from Sausalito, the GPS kept telling me to "go OFF ROAD". I wasn't too sure if she was right, but I kept driving and found the exit a mile later.

The good outweighs the few bad -- plus it's a WHOLE lot better than using printed out mapquest directions.

Since the beau and I relied so much on Hertz Neverlost (compact cars start off @ $39.99/day for A COMPACT plus $7.99/day for the Neverlost), we could go with a cheaper rental car company and bring our own GPS. Plus, we plan on taking more in-state trips with this baby.

Anyway, if this is worth anything, my sister was so impressed with my birthday toy that she bought one too because she vacations alot to different cities.

This is worth the money if you:
1) Love traveling
2) Travel Frequently
3) Moved to a new city
4) Plan to do more short local weekend vacations
5) Are a road tripper!

I see this 2620 lasting many many years...

Heat stroke ?
I'm quite happy with the unit, but after using it for less than a month I got Map read errors and then it would simply no longer boot up. I'm suspecting a failure of the micro drive (got noisy during attempts to boot up). Maybe the heat from being on the dashboard in the sun ? But it should be designed to handle this. I'm getting a free replacement from Amazon. I hope this was an isolated case and the next one will not have this problem. Now that I got use to this unit and want to always have one.

Since writing an earlier review of this unit I had to drive up to Naples, Maine. This town is on the AAA map. This town is known to Microsoft Streets and Trips. This town is not in the Garmin's database. Just up the lake is Harrison, Maine. Again, it is known to AAA and Microsoft but unknown to Garmin. Just west of Naples is a larger town called Bridgton. This is in the Garmin database but at the wrong location. The 2620 tries to navigate you to some guy's private house about 2 miles around a lake from the actual town.

I spent a fair amount of time with the Magellan hard-drive GPS units and never noticed these kinds of holes and errors in the database. ... Read more

Stripped OS
I'm generally happy with the hardware. The computer has many nice features for the price. But, all of the features of Windows XP Home edition were not preinstalled. Toshiba does not include the OS on CD ROM, only a recovery disc. Customer Support told me that I would need to purchase XP in order to obtain all the features of the OS, like the ability to Back-up.

Awesome Camera!
I was initially attracted to the Canon because of the 6.3MP, and I am extremely impressed at the improvement in print resolution over my former 3.3MP digital. But what really thrilled me was the ease of use. I pulled the camera out of the box, and after charging the battery, I shot pictures for a couple of weeks before I could find the time to read the manual. To my delight, I found that the manual had nothing to teach me about using the camera that I hadn't already learned by using the menu displayed on the LCD screen. I found the buttons to be very intuitive, especially since I have owned several digital cameras.
The first accessory I purchased was a 512 mb ultra-fast CF card, so that the camera would not be hindered by a slow transfer to media. This has paid off well, as I do alot of sports photography in burst mode. The camera does an amazing job of capturing fast action with crystal clear continuous focusing. (I should mention that the lens I am using is a 28-200mm)
Battery life is great, and if you keep your LCD review time to a minimum, you should get hundreds of pictures on one charge. The flash also seems to be very strong, I have not been disappointed yet, but an accessory flash can be added if necessary.
The camera is definitely weightier than any digital I have owned, but I was not looking for something to slip into my pocket. What I really wanted was professional looking prints, and I have found them. The print quality so far is better than any SLR I have ever owned. I couldn't be more pleased!

Pretty darn good camera
Previous digital camera is a Olympus Camedia 4.1 - it takes some very good pix and is quite rugged.

Before purchasing the Canon Rebel-D I read over a dozen editorial reviews, many dozen(s) customer reviews and hundreds of newsgroup postings related to it. I read the manual, cover to cover, three times and reviewed specific pages many times. I visited three different retail outlets and handled the camera many times.

I've now shot a few hundred test pix of a myriad of subjects using every camera setting available. Most were shot using the Canon EF 28-135 f/3.5-5.6 IS USM lens.

A lot of the 'con' comments about the camera - white balance problems, dark flash problems, focus issues, etc - I have found to be user user specific. Don't blame the camera.

I've printed differing sizes of prints on two different HP photo printers and have taken the files to four different retail print sources. With one exception the printed photos have been quite acceptable. (Kit's Camera at our local mall had a focus problem with their Dye-Sub printer. They assured me the tech would be called)

If I could add just two missing features they would be the LCD preview and the flash exposure adjustment.

Great Camera....High End Fun.
I purchased this camera about 6 months ago, it's a great camera and I haven't had 1 problem with it. I bought a few accessories..EX420 Flash, Canon 75-300 lens (there least expensive one, USM & IS wasn't an issue me)
lt's fast in auto focus. Purchased the battery grip also. Camera looks good, the grip helps with vert. shots and you have a slot for a second battery. Bought after market battery for $9.99 instead of $49.99 for OEM (look @ EBAY for batteries). If you purchase this camera you'll be very satisfied!

I have been intrigued by this camera since its release. My old camera is a Canon PowerShot S30 (3.2MP). I wanted to buy an SLR to advance my photography skills and capabilities. When this beauty came along bearing a price tag under $1,000 and received prestigious acclaim I knew I wanted one. But I decided to delay for a few months, waiting to see what competition would arise, and how quickly the price would drop. That competition presented itself as the Nikon D70. Ultimately, I decided to get the D-Rebel because the price-to-quality ratio is exceptional; the ~$300+ more for the Nikon doesn't seem justifiable for what I think are negligible factors. Besides, my PowerShot has served me well and I'm used to the Canon system.

I've played with mine in the field for two days. Last weekend was my introduction day and I made a lot of mistakes -- camera shake, off-focus, underexposure. Today I went back to the same spots [in similar weather] and received much better results by using my tripod, setting the exposure compensation to +1/3 (most of the time) and sometimes forcing a longer shutter than 'auto' suggested. My photos went from dull to incredible with a few easy adjustments. If your photos come out poorly always exhaust the manual solutions before blaming faulty camera construction.

If you're moving up from a [Canon] SLR, many of the characteristics of the D-Rebel will be familiar. If, on the other hand, you're used to a P&S like myself some things will be awkward. For example, using the viewfinder instead of the LCD monitor to compose shots; using the Main Dial and LCD panel to implement settings; and manual focusing. My PowerShot allows manual tweaking, but it is usually easier to let the processor handle certain functions. The SLR is different -- it invites you to play.

I have read complaints about the camera's construction. Indeed, it is an all-plastic body, whereas the D-Rebel's big brother, the 10D, is magnesium alloy. But I think this will be an insignificant point for most people; the plastic body is sturdy enough to handle a day's work. It has a nice firm rubber grip on the right side. A friend has an EOS Elan 7 (n or ne) and the weight is approximately the same.

I also know some people don't like the fact that the D-Rebel uses the flash as an AF-assist lamp -- particularly because once the flash pops it will take a flash exposure. But the solution is simple enough: push the flash back down. The camera automatically re-evaluates the shutter speed, maintains focus and takes the shot. You will need to have it on a tripod for the shot to be successful, though.

After a lot of reading and searching for components to make up a great system, I ended up buying: Rebel with 18-55mm lens; EF 55-200mm II USM lens; 1 Gb Sandisk Ultra II CompactFlash; 420EX Speedlite flash; Sto-fen Omni-Bounce diffuser (for 420EX); Tiffen 58mm Deluxe Enhancing Filter Kit; Samsonite Worldproof 3.2 Download SLR bag; Tamrac Small Lens Case. (I wrote a review for the Samsonite bag. I think it's fantastic for carrying all my gear. I use the Tamrac bag when I want to travel light.)

Here's a stupid mistake I made that I'd like to enlighten others to, so that they may avoid doing the same. When I first tested the camera most of my shots were indoors and required the flash. In many of those shots I noticed a black blob. I thought maybe my flash was defective. The manual says there are certain conditions where the flash may be obstructed. My solution was simple enough: two of my fingers were in the way. With my PowerShot, I had become used to lifting my ring and pinky fingers away from the flash and lens so they would be out of the way... now doing it put them in the way of the flash. Sometimes the simplest answer is the right one.

Here are two things I feel quite fortunate to have learned (i.e., stumbled upon), as I did not read this in any review.
(1) When using a [Canon] digital SLR you need a "Type II" lens. Lenses have always induced aberrations of light, which would create 'ghosts' and other weird things. But 35mm film is produced with a coating that prevents them. When you use a D-SLR, however, that coating is not on your sensor, so those light artifacts appear again. So Canon created the "Type II" lens, where the aforementioned coating is on the glass. The only problem is that there are only a handful of these lenses at this point. Unfortunately, this dramatically weakens Canon's claim that you can use "over 50 lenses" on your D-Rebel. While technically true, you probably wouldn't like the results. (Popular Photography magazine ran an article about this, which is on their site.)
(2) Don't fall for tricky CompactFlash advertising. I bought several Viking Components CF cards for my PowerShot. They always worked well and I almost bought a big one for my D-Rebel. Then I considered the Lexar "40x" because they have a good reputation. "40x" sounds good, eh? The Sandisk Ultra II works at 60x! At the Large-Fine setting, this will save you one-third second of write-time. That is big when you think about action photography. The Sandisk card can write 3 images when the Lexar can only do 2. The Vikings are worse; they can't even write one image/second!

I am exceptionally pleased with my purchase -- not with just the D-Rebel, but the whole system. It pays to do your research and decide what's right for you. Personally, I think I put together an excellent 'amateur SLR' package that will allow me to grow and explore for a long time. Hopefully you will feel the same with a D-Rebel over your shoulder.

Absolutely Amazing!
I've owned 3 previous digital camera's, all of them EVF "Electronic View Finder" models. My previous camera, a Nikon 5000 took admirable pictures, but nothing and I mean nothing compared to what this little baby puts out!

The autofocus is superb, the 4 frame image buffer really comes in handy when taking those quick action shots, plus you just can't beat the feel of a SLR.

Printing from an old HP 952C an 8x10 shot comes out looking exactly like a studio portrait. Great laptop if you're willing to spend the money.
I was planning on picking up a laptop at the end of 2004 or early in 2005, but learned about Intel's new mobile chips that feature more cache. So I waited and picked this up from Sony, which has the Intel M 750 at 1.86 Ghz and 2MB of cache. It also has Intel's 915PM chipset, which is Intel's better chipset for mobile applications. It has a great screen and plenty of power and memory.

I also like the fact it has a new 128mb video chip from ATI (X600) that supports PCI Express. This laptop has 1GB of memory, which I would recommend since 512MB is barely enough today. The hard drive also has plenty of space at 100GB and seems to be fast enough running at 5,400 rpm with SATA interface.

The Sony software for audio and video and editing seems pretty good and I haven't had any problems so far. One thing, I have Office Professional, so I deleted the lame 60-day Office trial package that came with the computer before I could fully access all the programs in my Pro suite.

One of the big selling points of the computer is its excellent 17" wide screen. Out of the box, it looks very good and I haven't even tried to optimize it yet. I'm thinking that the ErgoBright technology, while good for certain areas since it automatically adjusts brightness, compromises maximum picture quality. This feature could be defeated. Generally speaking, these types of auto adjustment features are best left inactive when viewing movies. I find this to be the case with widescreen TVs also. The docking station and speakers are also a plus. Sound from the speakers built into the laptop is only average. I haven't tried headphones yet or the speakers that come with the docking station and I can't yet vouch for the quality of the laptop's internal sound. However, I might pick up an Echo Indigo IO audio pc card. Laptop sound quality is generally average at best, and this add-on card could be a nice upgrade.

This computer is also very quiet, relatively speaking, which is very important to me since I don't like noisy computers. Overall, it is a well thought out design and Sony definitely didn't skimp on the components. ... Read more

Smallest of the Canon cameras delivers in every way!
I've had this camera for just over a month now and I can't even begin to tell you how happy I am with it. But I'm gonna try.

From my understanding, Canon went with the SD format on this camera to cut down on its body size, and it shows. Stylish and sturdy without the bulkiness and weight of other cameras, you can literally throw it in your pocket or purse and go.

Usability on this little number is top-notch. The AiAf focusing helps to ensure that you get the best photos every time, and the red eye reduction is on par with some of the best consumer cameras I've seen. Best of all, it's easy to use for anybody to use (my kid brother loves it more than I do), but when you're ready for something more, the camera's Manual Mode gives you a bevvy of options to work with.

The battery seems to go as long as you do (though I recommend buying an extra battery to be on the safe side), and how Canon managed to pack 3.2 MP's worth of quality into the SD110 is beyond me.

Setup on my computer was a snap. Running Mac OS 10.3, all I did was plug my camera in and voila, the camera was recognized immediately! I haven't tried the included software but if you have Apple's iPhoto you really don't need it.

In addition to an extra battery (the batteries on this camera are rechargeable, by the way), you would be wise to purchase a bigger memory card as the included 16MB SD card simply doesn't do it justice. With a 256MB SD card (I've been using Delkin's eFilm card), I can fit 152 photos at the camera's highest quality and size settings.

In short, if what you're looking for is a no-nonsense camera for those precious moments that treads the balance of form and function, look no further than the SD110.

LISTEN TO THIS....... GET THE CAMERA!
The Canon Powershot SD110 is the most practical, compact, easy to use digital camera. Yes, it's expensive and I do recommend an extra 256 SD card, but the money is all worth it. I just bought the camera a few weeks ago, and the reviews for the SD100 are basically the reviews for this one. None of the bad things that they say about the camera are true exept I do recommend an extra battery. The battery takes 95 minutes to charge and the manual says it can take over 210 images with the screen. If, however, your battery is running low, it will give you a 10 second warning. Not much... The SD100 and the SD110 are just about the same camera but the SD110 has a much faster shutter speed and has a print button which I find no use of. The quality of the pictures of this camera are absoulutely beautiful. The camera has settings of normal (1 mp), fine (2 mp), and superfine (3 mp) (I think). I took pictures in fine mode and they were the most beautiful pictures I've ever seen! The superfine mode pictures were even better. The inside shots are sweet! People lie about the quality of the pictures indoors. Why sit here and read my review about the camera..... GO BUY IT, YOU WILL ABSOULUTELY REGRET IT IF YOU DON'T!

Excellent Still Picture Quality !
If you just need a digital camera to take pictures in the sun light, you can almost pick any digital camera.

But if you want your camera to take great pictures under all different light conditions (i.e. in door, with dark background, wedding photos and other complex light situations), then Canon SD110 will be the only choice. Thanks to Canon DIGIC Image Processor and iSAPS Technology, this Canon SD110 really takes perfect pictures in all different light conditions, which no compact digital camera from other vender can match.

However the Canon case for SD110 is very dispointing, which is really designed for the bigger S500/S410 and is too big for SD110/SD100.

Easy to Use, Great camera!!!
I don't understand the review of the person below that complains about this camera. This is one of the best and easy to use. I have the S400 and got this one for my sister. This one is smaller and lighter than mine, and the quality is as good. Yes, you will need to purchase a bigger capacity SD Memory card, but now a days those are cheap. The video function is easy to use and the quality is very good. I highly recommend this camera.

Very compact camera, great photos and features
My only complaint about the camera is the stingy SD card size of 16MB, but this is cheap and easy enough to fix.

Apart from that this camera seems to be an excellent buy. The battery charges very quickly, and seems to provide good life.

The photo quality is great, and the automatic mode seems to expose and fill-flash perfectly in every situation, similar to my Canon SLR.

The video feature works very well, and the microphone quality seems excellent even with a lot of background noise.

The flash seems to work great for indoor use (not tried outdoor yet) giving nice even coverage, and perfect exposures. The red-eye reduction seems to work great also.

The build quality seems to be great, and the bundled PC software and TV out cables mean that this camera can do pretty much everything I could want.

Great iPod .....but
I bought my iPod Photo 60GB last week and it gave me a lot of problems from the start. I charged the battery for over 5 hrs until fully charged and 5 mins later the ipod was telling me to charge again saying the battery was empty.I got a new replacement within 3 days and charge the battery to full.The next day I was listening to my ipod for almost 2hrs & 15 mins and the battery icon was down to red meaning the battery was almost empty.This didn't make me happy at all when the ipod was suppose to last anywhere from 12-15 hrs.I will return the 2nd ipod I got from Amazon.Too bad....I really wanted to keep it, but with the battery trouble....I'm returning it.

The truth for prospective buyers
My wife bought me this for my birthday.I noticed that some of my cds were deteriorating, and wanted to digitize my library.My friends raved about this gizmo so she obliged me.Here is the whole story.

This is a marvelous invention, one actually fortunate consequence of our technology mania outside of the medical field.That being said, it has flaws.To use Apples Lossless Encoder which recreates cd quality sound, you will not get anywhere near 15,000 songs, more like 4-6000 max.Next, ITunes sucks.Pardon my crassness, but you need to have a mirror version of what is on your IPod on your pc for maximum enjoyment, ease of organization, auto-synch, or other benefits extolled by Apple.In short, if you have a huge library and would like to digitize and preserve the master copies in storage, take this into account.Itunes must be a revelation if you have a mini or a shuffle, but if you are condidering an IPod this large, it gets unwieldy.I had to buy a 100 gig external hardrive to send the music too (since I will probably get a new pc soon and don't feel like transferring the songs).

I am sure that any 5 year old or high school student can provide a go around or a better way to use technology, but if you are an audio-nut but not a computer-nut, this gadget is as close to perfect as it gets.

Great, not Perfect
"Yeah, its an iPod." Then you get to boast about the 60 GB and that wears thin pretty fast. But you have to admit its a damn good looking player. You've read the millions of reviews so I'll only bore you with my thoughts:

$450 and no case? The dock may have been low on the list of usefulness, but come on Apple... this thing scratches if you look at it hard. So the REAL price of this player is more like $490 after you get the required case.

It takes a day to get used to the controls. My wife was so frustrated she tossed it aside and never looked back. The controls are simplified to the point of complexity. Menu is power on (but not power off, that's Play/Pause) but its also back... You get used to it, but I wouldn't sell it as a feature.

The EQ is worthless. I found that ROCK works best and everything else sounds muffled or distorted. It's also a pain to browse EQ settings for the currently playing song. You have to navigate back a couple of menus then into settings then spin down to EQ. After selecting an EQ setting, you drop back to the settings menu. If you don't like that EQ setting, you have to go back into the EQ menu and start the dance all over. Why cant the EQ settings apply live as I spin down them? The song will end before you have time to try them all...

Everyone loves the touch wheel and so do I until you realize you don't remember the group, you have 7800 songs and the one you are looking for begins with a "Z". After about 15 fast laps around the touch wheel it does accelerate, but I wish there was a faster way...

The battery life for me is pretty much as Apple stated. I am concerned that sometime next year after the warranty expires the battery will go poof and die. Apple hasn't done a good job making people like me feel better about the longevity of an iPod. Still, I did take a chance.

I like the Album art when playing. When I used to play CD's (or god bless - my vinyl), I would always have the cover there with me to look at. Something feels more natural having it displayed.

All in all, if you can convince yourself that a portable music player should cost $450/$490 then this is definitely one of the best ones to get, even with its quirks. ... Read more

MD681, good looking, functional home office essential gadget
Negatives first: Very poor Motorola tech. support... you gotta figure this device out on your own. Finding a back-up and/or replacement battery pack was a scavenger hunt to say the least, come on Motorola... get with the program and train your customer service rep's and techies to actually understand your products! FYI; Radio Shack has a battery, P/N #23-272 (2.4V/1400mAh NiMH) and it's widely available at most stores or on the web. Overall, I like this device (great speakerphones in the handsets) I have three remote handsets, scattered about my home and office). O.K., so the answering machine is disassociated with the base operating system and remote handsets... who cares anyway! Cool blue lights for evening usage and I like the "brick style" handsets... kind of muscular instead of the ever popular feminine styled crap that's out there from the competition! This phone is for hi-tech users only... not fuddies, lackeys and techno-idiots. Buy this phone system if you are using a WiFi 2.4GHZ network to avoid transmission interference. I purchased mine 01/08/04 at Circuit City in Indianapolis... they had more cordless phones on display (and in stock) than any other retailer in the metro area.

A very nice phone
I've had this phone now for a week and have come to really like it - so much so, that I'm going to go out and get an additional handset for my home office to replace a corded speakerphone. The handset itself has a decent speakerphone built in and I was pleasantly surprised by the sound quality.

Others have mentioned that the sound quality of the answering machine is poor. In my opinion, it's every bit as good as any other answering machine I've ever owned. Others have also complained that the handset and base station don't share a phone book. There's a simple solution to work around this. When somebody calls you, you simply enter the Caller ID menu and then press save on the handset and the base station. It takes about 5 seconds. The same works if you call somebody. I dialed a number and the caller ID worked in reverse, showing me the name of the person who's number I just dialed. Menu > Caller ID > Save. Done. It's that easy. I wouldn't want to enter numbers by hand on each device, but this is such a simple way to do it, I don't know who would try anything else. Spend an afternoon calling your friends and you'll be done.

The handset, while slim, fits comfortably in your hand. I was concerned about this, but it's not an issue. I've mounted the base station to a wall and while it sticks out a little bit farther off the wall than I'd like, it's less than others and after about 2 hours, it really doesn't bother me anymore.

The menu system is nice and you can even adjust the contrast of the screens. My only gripe about the phone is the ring tones. Can't any phone mfr (cell, wired or wireless) make a phone that has a good old-fashioned ring to it anymore? I had to cycle through to the 6th ring tone before I found one that wasn't annoying. Oh - you might want to make sure to set the ring tone on the phone and the base station to be the same. Otherwise, when the handset is on the base station, the rings are out of sync and the two different tones are annoying. This and only getting one battery in the box are what keep me from giving it 5 stars.

I would have no problems recommending this phone to anybody. I bought it direct at Circuit City so I could return it easier if necessary, but I'll be keeping it and ordering another handset.

Motorola needs help with this one!!
We purchased this phone a year ago from Target and have had problems since the beginning with it cutting in and out during conversations. We can be sitting in the same spot, near the base and it always happens if we are on the phone for more than a few minutes. We have addressed the problem with Motorola, went through trouble shooting options with no success. They sent us a new phone (at our expense to ship the original phone back). Unfortunately this phone gives us the same problems!! Motorola blames our phone company...we live in a major metropolitan area with a large provider - it's not the case! I believe they were one of the first to come out with the 5.8Ghz phones and they need to improve their product as the competion is much more plentiful now. Rather than fight with the phone any longer.....I'm pitching it. MY RECOMMENDATION: DON'T BUY THIS PHONE - not worth the money!!

So much potential, but some annoying problems
This is a great phone with some really annoying problems. I know it's been said before, I read all about how you can't sync the handset address books with the base. Now that I'm using this, what an incredible frustration! Motorola, pay attention: Add this easy feature as an option people can use to sync the handset with the base. This is a great phone, really nice reception, very clear, easy to use, nice backlighting, feels great, etc. But the lack of sync drives me nuts. Now that we own the base + 1 additional handset, my wife wants to upgrade the whole house. But I'm definitely not going to program the phone list 5 times. The other problem I've heard mentioned before is the quality of the answering machine. It does sound awful, it's way overcompressed on both the inbound and outbound messages. I also wish there was an "auto-redial" feature when the line is busy. Lots of cell phones have this now.

If you don't get easily annoyed by small details, this is a wonderful phone, but for those people who really want to feel like they got their money's worth on this expensive of a phone, hope Mot fixes these problems for the MD682. ... Read more

Easily the best I've found
I recently bought a Canon Digital Rebel. When considering memory I initially figured I'd stick with the brand I used with my PowerShot S30: Viking Components. But I wanted the best, knowing that my 6.3MP photos would take longer to be recorded.

I looked at the Lexar 40x first. Lexar has a good reputation and "40x" sounds like a snappy number. For some reason, though, I liked the feedback about this [Sandisk Ultra] card more. So I bought this one and am very glad I did.

Little publicized is the fact that the Sandisk Ultra II blazes along at 60x (9 Mb/s) write speed. That translates to being able to record one more whole image per second than the Lexar, and two or three images more than SimpleTech or Viking Components. (Each card reads at the same speed, I believe -- 10 Mb/s.)

Worried about a trade-off in reliability? It's backed with a 5-year warranty. You can't go wrong with that, folks.

Great memory choice for the Sony DSP F828 camera
I recently purchased a Sony DSP F828 camera, which uses 8MP per shot, so needed LOTS of memory for it. I also wanted that memory to be as fast as possible, so as not to slow down picture-taking. The SanDisk Ultra II 1 GB CompaceFlash card was my choice (faster and cheaper than the Lexar alternatives I found), and has turned out to be a very happy one.

The only caution for those buying memory for use with the Sony DSP F828 is that its 640 x 480 movie mode is limited to 15 FPS with this memory card, whereas it can do 30 FPS with a MemoryStickPro or a Hitachi CompactFlash hard disk (the other two kinds of memory usable in this camera.) Personally, I don't see this as much of a problem, because if that matters to you, you'll need a lot more than 1 GB of memory. 5 minutes of 640 x 480 at 15 FPS used over 100 MB of memory, suggesting 30 FPS would use up 1 GB in under 25 minutes.

What a WONDERFUL product!
I received this wonderful product as a gift during the holidays. I absolutely LOVE it. If you own a digital camera, this _IS_ the card to use. Lots of room, and fast. I was shocked.
I used this card in a 5 MegaPixel camera, a 3.2 MegaPixel, and a 2.1 MegaPixel. The same results between all three cameras - fast, fast, FAST!
If you need to transfer a ton of files between two computers using a card reader, you'll be glad you've got this card.

What an AWESOME card.
You can beat it.. fast, furious, and roomy.
I use it in a Canon PowerShot S30 - 611 pictures @ full resolution, and best quality.
If you wanna use it for transferable storage, its nice - holds the equivalent of one and a half CD-ROMs.
You won't be disappointed with this card!

Fantastic addition for digital photography
I just purchased this to compliment my canon D10. This is a great little flash card. It is very fast and holds hundreds of photos. I use it on a large format (6.3) and can get over 700 photos. ITunes suck, but you don't need it.
The player is great. I never used iTunes, but as far as I'm concerned I'll nerver have to. I hated my previous sony mp3 player because the softwere had, just like iTunes, a lot of copyright bouls***t.
When I won my shuffle as a gift, I was really supicios that I would have the same problems with iTunes. I use win98 and, as a music fan, I love winamp: it's light, fast, practical... THE FACT IS: SHUFFLE WORKS IN WINAMP AND WIN98. All you gotta do is download the win98 driver and the winamp plugin. And the best part is, it works great! All you gotta do is select the songs you want form the library, right-click and "send to ipod" (winamp is the greatest!!!) It's realible, doesn't have any copyright bouls***t and its fast. I use standard usb, and it takes about 15 min to upload 1GB.

The ipod itself is great.
+ : Practical, cool, very very light, no unnecessery cables, fine sound quality.

Waht I think about the lack of display:
Some people think the lack of display is due economical factors. In my opinion it was a desing decision. Ipod shuffle is the best looking mp3 player on the market and a display would compromise significantly its looks. As a music fan, I know the name of all my songs, so i don't need a dyspaly to inform me that. The problem of finding a specific song can be solved by loading your songs in alphabetical order.

I love it!
I needed something that would allow me to listen to music at the gym (since I workout 6 days/week). I looked at the other options, the Shuffle fit the bill. I was originally going to get the 512mb version but opted for the 1gb model since it's not much more.

Pros:
-This thing is tiny, not much bigger than the USB thumb drives I use.
-No moving parts means no skipping while I'm on the treadmill.
-Very easy to use and install (took several minutes). The shuffle I purchased needed an update to Itunes, which was a quick download.
-Ready to use out of the box. Includes the Shuffle, headphones, 2 sets of pads, some Apple stickers, manual, CD all in a very bright green box.

Cons:
-Small enough so you don't know it's there, gotta be careful not to sit on it.

A lot of folks seem to be concerted about the lack of a screen. If I'm working out I don't need a screen. No reason to complain about lack of a screen if you look at it and see THERE IS NO SCREEN. Buy one of the other models if you need a screen.

When you register it you'll be required to enter the serial number. It's located on the Ipod itself and is tiny but it is also on the bottom of the box next to the barcodes and is much easier to read. I've seen (on other sites) people complaining about the side of the serial number on the unit. You now know that it is on the box. :)

After you install it it will need to charge, so don't plan on using it immediately.

Great iPod Alternative For Athletes Or Kids
Great for jogging, and makes the display surprisingly unnecessary. A solid, cheap, and durable alternative for kids who might not take the necessary care with a hard-drive based iPod.

Not a good value, but it's still something you can buy
The shuffle ipod. A great little Mp3 as tall as a large popsicle stick. it's easy to use as the regular ipod, but even though it's cool, it's not my kind of mp3 player.

let's look at the good things, it's small, and can be worn on your neck. It's fun, like a radio all of your choice.It's white, and it's like ipod's should be. it also plays songs without the annoying stalling and loading like theother small ones.Fun and cool looking.

But it still has lot's of cons. For starters, there is no screen. It's kind of fustrating, but it's fun at the same time. Like a radio without annoying commercials or announcers. another is the price. If you want music, the regular, Special, or photo. if you wanted to buy 2o gig worth of music with shuffle, It would cost more than 2000 dollars,and you just get music and no extras. And the others already shuffle, but still dosen't have the radio feature,.

It's good for anybody who dosen't like too much music and like the suprises of a radio. But if you are wanting to carry tons of music, buy the regular one.

All I wanted was simple
And the iPod Shuffle delivered. I kind of wonder about the reviewers who say that there are other flash based mp3 players that cost the same but have more features and anyone who buys the shuffle is ... (substitute your favorite ad hominem attack). If you want those other features, don't buy the shuffle. But, I don't want a screen (prone to getting scratched or cracked), an FM tuner (I don't listen to the radio), voice recording (um, just have no use for that in my life). Sandisk has started production of the 1GB SD card and they will be shipped to distributors by late Jan. 2004, according to PC World web edition. Nice for the money, but Tech Support is the pits!
I purchased this notebook for my daughter less than a month ago.She was very happy with it, and I was pleased with what we got for the money.Then the DVD drive began having problems.To make a long story short, after several calls to Toshiba it was finally determined that the drive must be replaced.The closest authorized service center is almost 40 miles away, so we must send it off to Toshiba and be without it for up to 2 weeks.I have dealt with other computer manufacturers who have sent out a technician to correct a problem covered under warranty.Why can't Toshiba do this?Or at least have a few more authorized service providers.I'm not exactly out in the sticks.There are several businesses in my area who could provide this service for Toshiba's customers.

A HORRIBLE Experience

Sleek notebook, but that’s the only positive.My absolute worst fears all came true only three weeks after I bought it.

Within three weeks the screen had died on me.Called the warranty service who advised me to send it to the Toshiba depot for repair, as opposed to taking it to a local service center.They assured me that the depot would have all the necessary parts, whereas a service center will have to order them and wait.They also assured me that I’ll have my notebook back in about a week.

Three weeks later, after countless phone calls, and many promises of delivery “next week”, they finally told me that parts are still not available and that it would take two additional weeks before they get them.

I called customer relations several times (get used to 45 minutes on hold, don’t bother leaving messages, they never return calls despite the promise of “within the hour”).Every time I was assured that this time they’ll get it right and that I’ll get my notebook within days.

Needless to say, two weeks passed, and the assurances turned to be meaningless.Customer relations’ only job is to get you off the phone, not to solve your problem.So here I am with a brand new notebook that spent twice as much time in the repair shop than on my desk.I called customer relations again, and asked to speak to someone who will actually do something to solve my problem, perhaps send me a replacement unit.I bought the notebook because I needed it, and I just can’t defer using it indefinitely.Guess what they told me?There’s not such thing as someone who could do something.There is no replacement policy.I’ll just have to wait for the part until it arrives – whenever that is.

A new notebook is not supposed to break right out of the box, but if it does, a respectable manufacturer should stand by their product and make up for the inconvenience to the customer. Toshiba has been utterly disappointing on all counts.

Poor Battery + Lots of Junk.....

The Batter Performance is Poor. The salesman at Circuity City will BS to get their product sold. It hardly lasts more than 80 minutes. The Laptop is loaded with JUNK. It sux!!!!

I installed Red Hat Linux 9.0 and XP Pro with SP2.
Their are no Network Card Drivers for Linux, so I can easily say forget about your wireless working on Linux. Shame on both Toshiba and Intel for not supporting the same.

The system cannot hibernate nor turn itself off even after installing battry saver options that accompanied the CD.

So I have had a horrible experience. Pretty much whatever I want I don't get.I will never ever BUY Toshiba.

Love my Toshiba M45-S331!!
After some research, I was down to Toshiba M45-S331 and Dell 6000. Finally got Toshiba although it was more expensive(especially considering Dell online deals). So far am very satisfied and love its built quality and feel as compared to others in the same price & specs range.

PROS:
1. Great specs for the price
2. TruBrite screen
3. Harman/Kardon speakers
4. Keyboard Layout
5. Bridge-Media Aapter

CONS:
1. PC2700 RAM instead of a DDR2
2. Relatively less Battery Life. (< 3 hrs on a full-charge)

I experienced the FREEZING/LOCK-UP problem on plugging the AC Power Cord and have seen numerous such topics online. Toshiba Support insisted its a hardware problem but was not convinced.

Was finally able to solve this problem by tweaking the Power settings of the Laptop...

1. Go to "Power Management Icon" from your system-icon-tray on bottom-right corner of the screen. (It gives information about Current Power Source, Remaining Battery and Power Profile)

2. Right-click it and select "TOSHIBA POWER SAVER SETTINGS".

3. Click "SETUP OPTIONS" button on bottom-left of the window

4. "UNCHECK" the box marked "Change Power Source Profile Automatically".

Once you have done this....you should hopefully no longer have the freezing or locking problem when you switch to AC Power.

new laptop
This is the first time I purchased a laptop and cannot really compare to other laptops.However after a few minutes using this laptop, I realised that there was absolutely no noise coming from the laptop .. incredible .. very quiet!I was annoyed by the tons of software which were installed on it (most of them as trial) .. it took me a whole day to remove everything and install my software.

practical and easy to use
let's put it this way, if you want to store all your music in your ipod ( and when i say all your music, i mean ALL), thenthis ipod mini is not for you, 'cause as you guys know, this ipod mini only holds up to 1,500 songs (6gb). Now,that's a lot of songs if you ask me, that's an entire week of music, i love classic rock and i filled my ipod mini with all of my favorite songs, you know how cool it is for me to take this everytime i go to the beach or if i'm having some company, i can just press shuffle and enjoy without the hassle of getting up everytime, you know to change cd's??, so if you're looking for something that's not that expensive and just want to have a good time and easy to use then i recomend this little item!! Outstanding MP3 player.
I began looking into an iPod purchase over a year ago, and was almost sold on the 4th generation iPod.I liked the colors of the mini and was okay with 4 GB of storage (though that was a tad on the small side), but the main thing that deterred me from the mini was the less-than-desirable 8-10 hour battery life.

Then the 2nd generation mini was released.Apple seemed to fix and improve every little thing I had held against the original.They made the colors brighter, increased the hard drive space to 6 gigs, and most importantly, at least to me, increased the battery life two-fold.

The 18 hours that Apple advertises is EXTREMELY conservative.If you're content listening to music and don't need the backlight for more than a minute or two every hour, the battery can run for about 24-25 hours.I can go a week and not have to worry about recharging my battery.I could listen every waking moment of my day and never have to stop and recharge before I went to bed.It's a wonderful thing.

The blue is very bright and pleasing to the eye--I've seen the pink and silver versions and they too are visually appeasing.6 gigs is nothing to shake a stick at--on the contrary, I've found that 6 gigs is just about the perfect size for someone who has a vast number of interests musically but doesn't have thousands upon thousands of CD's to rip and upload.Unless you have literally hundreds of CD's in your collection that you plan on putting on your iPod, I'd recommend the mini, since you'd more than likely end up with half the space on your regular iPod sitting unused.

Despite the fact that the iPod scratches easily, there are several cases which work extremely well...I'm partial to the ones made by Power Support, though you have to import them from Japan.Uploading your songs is quick and easy.Navigating the menus takes about 15 minutes to master.There's really nothing more I can say that can do the iPod mini justice.

I will make a quick note and add that I'm not an Apple fanatic.I think that Apples are good computers, but I'm still attached to my PCs.However, when it comes to MP3 players, there's really no comparison; it's going to take many many years before Microsoft or any other competing company can put out any MP3 player nearly as nice as the 2nd generation iPod mini.

Also, if you have a friend that's a teacher in a school, look into the education discount on the Apple website.It ends up being 20 or 30 dollars off.

GREAT!!(after I survived setting it up)
I just got my 6 gb mini for my birthday.I also got most of the accessories as presents, too, so I don't have to worry about forking over the cost of the mini itself for them (seriously, mac).I AM IN ELECTRO LOVE!Wow, and I think this time it's for REALS.:-)I am coming fresh off the iRiver boat (funny how they use the "i" in front of their name, too), and have been extremely pleased with my little 256 mb player... and I do mean LITTLE.BUT, I am extatically (word invention there) adding album after album on my iPod as I type this.Yeah, it's kinda annoying to convert WMA files to AAC, but they do the work for you.I love the organization, I love the style, I love the size, I love the balance between form AND function.I do feel like I've just joined a cult of iPod users, however.Oh well, not as bad as Mormonism

Let me start off by saying that I was amazed at how small this thing is. I bought the IPOD MINI.When I got it and opened it up I was amazed at how small it was. It was crazy small!Plus it holds around 1,000 songs.Right now I have about 500 and it's a little over half-full on the memory. I got a 4GB IPOD MINI.So, there is plenty of memory space for lots of songs.The software was easy to install.I thought it was tricky figuring out how to select songs and actually put them on the ipod.But after a while I figured it out.Also the volume on the ear phones is amazing. I almost blew out an eardrum by accidentally turning up the volume!The only problem i've had so far with the ear pieces is that the foam ear pads keep coming off the earbuds.NO biggie though.I would recommend getting some sort of case to protect this thing since you've already paid $200 bucks what is another $20 to make sure it's safe!There's plenty to choose from.Charging is it easy, you just plug it into the usb port and it automatically starts charging it.I have a computer so it's no biggie.If you don't have a computer with a usb port its gonna be tough finding a place to recharge it.I haven't tested the battery life yet, but it seems to be ok.Probably more than what i need.Lastly, I was a little worried that the songs would not transfer over to the itunes software. I have lots of songs that I got elsewhere :) I hoped they would transfer over to the other software and they did. They also sound great, the play fine. It's not a problem at all. Now i have over half of my music collection on this thing.It's a really great product.5 stars!!

Nicely Done, Garmin!
The Garmin C330 is a well designed, easy to use GPS.It does not offer all the bells and whistles of the Garmin 2620 or Magellan RM700, for example - but the C330 offers simplicity and quality in a nice neat package.The advantages of the C330:
- The display is awesome - high resolution with good contrast.
- No buttons!Everything, except volume and power, is controlled by the touch screen.
- The software is fast; route calculations take just a few seconds.
- After the initial lock, this little unit locks on very quickly after powering up.
- The internal battery is terrific; you can do your route planning indoors without looking for an AC receptacle, and you can leave the unit on during a rest stop on your trip to preserve trip data.Battery life is 3 to 4 hours.
- The OS is super intuitive.
- The 3D view is simple to follow, but the map view is excellent, also.
- Navigation performance is excellent.
- Speakers are built in, with excellent sound quality.
- Windshield mount is small, sturdy and simple.
- The unit is small enough that it won't obstruct your view.
- The power cord is hardwired to the windshield mount - no plug to contend with.

A few disadvantages I've noticed:
- The battery is not user replaceable
- The C330 cannot save a route.But this is not a big deal.When you start up after a stop, you just have it calculate the route to your destination, which takes just seconds - or just leave it on if your stop doesn't exceed 3 to 4 hours.
- The display can get washed out in direct light on a bright day - but I expect that is common to all GPS units.
- As I mentioned, it doesn't have the bells and whitles of the 2630 or RM 700.For example, you can't monitor satellite signal strength from indiviual satellites. you can't determinen your lat/long position, and as I mentioned, you can't save routes in the C330.And you can't program it for several different users like you can with the RM700.

But all in all, the C330 is a winner.It's simple to operate, well designed, very effective, and reasonably priced.It's a strong buy!

Undoubtedly the best Car GPS in today's market !
I have used Navman ICN 630, Megallen RM 700 & finally this one.

I can tell you this is the best & most of all easiest.This is why this unit is the best:

1. No downloading of Maps
2. Has most udpated Maps compared to other brands
3. Has 5 million points of interest compared to others
4. Touchscreen
5. Easiest of all to use.Easier than the Acura GPS i have used.
6. Very small but with most usable screen view.It doesn't take a lot of winshield space, doesn;t block visibility.Though screen is small, letters are SO BIG & EASY TO READ.

Sony VAIO T250 vs T350
The T350 offers intelligent WAN, new memory configuration, and a cool redish color. But...if you don't want to log on to Cingular in the WAN offering choose the T250. While the keys are smaller than a normal keyboard, this 6'1" user finds them acceptable for fast typing. The 802.11g works great. And while I compare it to my HP at 2ghz the speed of the Sony seems just as fast. The touch-pad works well. The weight is fantastic. And the screen, while a bit small, is very very crisp.
