4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent
When I go to the computer store to look at LCD monitors, they all seem to fall into one of two categories - those that look good and those that look great. This one is definitely one of the latter. I chose it mainly because of the acrylic covering that protects the screen. In our house, it is impossible to prevent small fingers from touching the screen. I was also waiting for a monitor that could display video and action games without too much ghosting. This NEC unit did not disappoint. Don't be put off by the location of the hard-to see control buttons (on the side of the bezel). A little fooling around orients you to NEC's scheme, and once it's set, you can forget it.

Criticisms:
1. The stand folds for travel, but is really, really stiff. You can't raise the unit more than a couple of inches off the desk.
2. No digital interface. Only of concern because I intend to keep this monitor for many years, and who knows for how long new video cards will continue to support analog? It doesn't matter for now - the picture is rock-solid.
3. The warranty is only for a year. I expect one-year warranties from second tier vendors, but not from NEC. This thing is built like a tank.
4. I am getting a bit tired of silver and black color schemes, especially on bezels. Sony used to make a glossy black unit with an acrylic screen. A real stunner.

Conclusion: For the price, you can't beat this value.

5-0 out of 5 stars I'll never use a CRT again after buying this LCD monitor
This was not my first choice in computer monitors. I originally bought a Viewsonic CRT monitor because I wanted true colors for my photography. LCD's have always scared me off, as people say they have unreliable color. After two defective CRT monitors, I thought it was time to embrace the new technology.

I did a side-by-side comparison of all the popular LCD monitors. Two brands really stand out: Sony and NEC. I chose this NEC because of bright backlighting, engineered specifically for photo editing. And, it really is bright. Unlike a CRT, it doesn't buzz, flicker, or wobble. It's rock steady. The colors are vibrant and make photographs look three dimensional.

True to the disadvantages of CRT's, viewing from angle makes the colors look a little warm. Viewing from an elevated angle makes part of the screen look a little darker. As the saying goes, "Just don't do that." If you tweak your colors and keep your monitor pointed straight-on, this beauty will out-perform any CRT I've used. The stand is fully adjustable and, unlike a CRT, you don't need a fork lift to adjust the viewing angle.

The stand was a bit stiff and it took me a little courage to snap it into place. Odd for a high performance monitor, this one is analog rather than digital. My video card can drive both. Again, I was not disappointed. Although there are the usual tweaks, size adjustments, offset adjustments, etc - there is button on the side which does all the tweaks for you. This is wonderful. What once took me fifteen minutes for each video mode now take a few seconds.. click / done. Wow.

The monitor is so compact and light, that I I did have one minor difficulty when I picked it up at the store. They couldn't find it! I guess they weren't expecting this compact 13lb box with its own carrying handle. I was impressed again. Not a dead pixel to be found, rock solid, bright BRIGHT colors, razor sharp images and text, and zero flicker at 60hz. I'll never go back to CRT's again.

5-0 out of 5 stars Is It High Quality CRT??!!
The colors are so realistic and bright that I can't help think that it's a CRT. The difference is that with these I can fit two in the same space it takes to have one CRT. Whether turned on or off it always looks like a beautiful picture frame. But when playing a movie or game is when it really shines. I dare you to compare side by side with more expensive LCDs and see for yourself. You will be amazed.

5-0 out of 5 stars Clearly the Best "Looking" LCD for the Money !
Let me first say that I researched 17" LCD monitors for over a month before settling on the NEC 1765. After reading dozens of reviews, online and off, I narrowed down my choices to the following: Samsung 173p, Sony SDM-HX73, and the NEC 1765. The Samsung 173p (note that there's a huge difference in picture quality between the 173p and 173s models) admittedly has a SLIGHTLY better (brigher) picture aided by its 700:1 contrast, but it also cost $200 dollars more. I'm happy to report that I was able to buy the NEC 1765 for $450 with a $50 rebate and a $50 sale at Circuit City. The Samsung also has a slower response time of 25 ms (versus 16ms for the NEC) which is not favorable for playing games or watching action movies (both things which my hubby enjoys using the computor for). Then there is the SONY SDM-HX73. It has a high contrast (500:1), a FAST response time of 16ms, as well as decent integretated speakers. Plus, a unigue design. But when I went to my local Fry's and saw the 3 monitors side by side, the images on the NEC LCD simply looked BETTER, BRIGHTER, and CRISPER. Also, the SLEEK and modern NEC made the SONY look bulky. And even though having integrated speakers save space, they pale in comparison to a good set of exterior speakers. Finally, the NEC is the only one that incorporates a HARD SCREEN protector which allows me not to stress out if someone touches the screen (like my 3 year old). The only criticism I have read about the NEC is the glare issure but I simply adjust the angle of the screen (it's only bad if the light source is directly behind it). Personally, the only complaint that I have is the 1 year warranty. I have to say though that having inspected it, it's built like a tank - there's nothing FLIMSY about it. Plus, it arrived with ZERO DEAD PIXELS. I replaced my 19" CRT monitor and as pleased as punch - I should have made the switch sooner. With my new LCD monitor, and my wireless Microsoft keyboard and mouse, my "aging" computer got a MAJOR styling update!

5-0 out of 5 stars I LOVE IT!
This is so far my favorite LCD 17" monitor I have used/seen and being that I setup computer systems for doctor's offices for living I've seen a lot.
My parents got this model for their home computer and everytime I use it I just absolutely love it. It is SUCH a sharp and clear and high contrast image and it seems like the refresh time or whatever is really good too. I've played counter strike on it a LITTLE bit, but what I did experience was great. I know LCDs aren't supposed to be for gaming but I think that is changing and pretty soon LCDs will be very acceptable for gaming as this one already appears to be. Another feature of this monitor I really like is the hard plastic cover. A lot of people are used to being able to touch their CRT screen because it is hard glass, but as you might know touching an LCD can cause ripples and damage if touched too hard. The hard plastic cover is GREAT! It makes the monitor very easy to clean and protects the monitor AND it's hardly noticeable as far as image quality goes. It does not diminish image quality as far as I can tell. I LOVE THIS MONITOR! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Terrific image quality
The NEC MultiSync LCD 1760V monitor is an excellent choice if you are considering an LCD monitor. In case you didn't know, NEC-Mitsubishi Display Systems, the manufacturer, is one of the first companies to produce LCD monitors, so they really know what they are doing. The LCD screen itself measures... you guessed it... 17 inches diagonally, and the image is sharp and bright even at 70% brightness and 50% contrast. The native resolution is 1280x768; if you think you'll get eye strains at this level, don't worry: the monitor comes with a free downloaded copy of Liquid View, which makes Windows easier to look at.

Setup was a total breeze for me. I just took the monitor out of the box, hooked up the power and monitor cables, and turned it on. NEC's exclusive automatic adjustment immediately set the contrast and brightness to my liking. The only adjustment you may need to make is on the PC itself: according to an instruction sheet taped to the monitor, you should set the display adapter to 1280x1024 at 60Hz.

The 1760V is stylish in either black or white. Because it's made in China, the plastic does feel a little "cheap" when you inspect it up-close. Thankfully the LCD screen itself is top-notch. No dead pixels, no ghosting, no pulsating spots as with offerings from off-brands like KDS or Cornea.

My only complaint is the control buttons on the monitor have nearly invisible markings. Of course, the automatic adjustment feature means you probably won't have to tinker with the monitor controls, but NEC should have labeled them more clearly. Contrary to what one reviewer claims, the manual *does* mention the buttons and what they do, in a table on p. 7. The buttons are responsive and easy to press, which is an improvement over some previous models. The setup interface is pretty straightforward, although first-timers may need to refer to the manual to see which buttons control what.

In summary, another excellent product from NEC-Mitsubishi. If you want a 17-inch LCD, be sure to get this affordable, high-quality one.

(Note: This model is Macintosh-friendly.)

5-0 out of 5 stars Zero dead pixels and no ghosting!
I've been sitting on the LCD fence for desktop use. Even though I'm not a big gamer, I dislike the ghosting on slow LCD's while scrolling web pages, etc. Also, I learned about native LCD resolution the hard way after purchasing a close-out Thinkpad T-series direct from IBM which did not indicate SVGA+ with native resolution of 1400x1150 on a 14" screen (talk about your small fonts!!).

I've adjusted, though, and when my desktop CRT started acting up I decided I could live with 1280 x 1024 on a 17" for desktop use. I use the Opera web browser which provides for easy "scaling" up of web pages. This can be the biggest surprise for LCD newbies; LCD's only look sharp in their native resolution, you can't really scale up/down like a CRT (and stay sharp).

My priorities for a desktop LCD monitor, in order, were:

o) sharp text display
o) limited/no ghosting (16ms)
o) some reasonable probablility of no dead pixels
o) high contrast
o) thin case bezel

I have not been disappointed in any regard with the 1760; no dead pixels at all that I can see on this unit. Of course, this is somewhat the luck of the draw, but I understand that NEC is fairly stringent with this. The monitor is also very "bright". I am running the brightness around 75% which is plenty for me.

This LCD is not a "wide view", but that has not been a big issue for me; the base does tilt/swivel. If you're not familiar with this aspect of LCD's search the net; LCD's that have around 170 degree viewing angle don't "dim" as you move your viewing angle off-axis. Dell Ultra-Sharp is an example (most of which are made by Samsung). I believe NEC offers several wide-view LCD's as well as do other vendors.

I was somewhat wary of the included LiquidView software, but it actually works pretty well in limited use - increases desktop icons to a "comfortable" size. For those that aren't used to the 1280x1024 native resolution for desktop icons and such it is an added bonus ...

The NEC 1760 hits the size/performance/cost LCD sweet spot quite nicely, imo, and I have been very satisfied so far. I have no doubt LCD prices will continue to drop, but you have to take the plunge some time.

5-0 out of 5 stars Awesome LCD Monitor!
Was a bit concerned about ordering an LCD monitor sight unseen but all those fears were put aside once I unpacked it, made the connections and turned it on for the first time! My first impression? "WOW!" I'm primarily a laptop user and my most recent is a Compaq Presario 3045US that I purchased for 2 reasons: first, the price was right for the computing power (less than $1000) and secondly, the 16" screen was awesome for watching DVDs, playing games and basically replacing my desktop at work. Why do I mention this? Simply because I purchased a new game recently ("City of Heroes") and it isn't capable of running on my laptop. I knew the day would come when I'd find a game that didn't run on the integrated graphics chip but I didn't think that day would come so soon, and so my hand was forced...I'd need to build a desktop capable of playing the new game and with that, I'd need a new monitor. Was a bit skeptical of going with an LCD for a graphics intensive game because, having owned many laptops, I know that pixels tend to blur during action sequences. Went around to many stores comparing monitors before realizing that under their flourescent lights, all the LCD monitors looked just about the same. So I spent many hours a day, for about a week, reading reviews online and comparing numbers before deciding on the NEC 1760V and I'm glad I did! Refresh rates are quick with minimal blurring, the colors are vibrant and pictures look sharp in the native resolution. OSD buttons are difficult to make out but once the settings are set, there's really no need to go back to them. Other's complain about NEC's pop-up display warning about running games in non-native resolution but I hit "exit" button once (on the display) and the warning disappears without coming back. Biggest fear was dead pixels BUT I figured there's no difference between ordering online or picking the monitor up in a store. If you're going to get a dead pixel, you'll get a dead pixel regardless of mail order or in store pick up...though my monitor was 100% beautiful with NO dead pixels on arrival! And compared to the 16" screen on my laptop? This NEC simply blows it away!! My only complaint is the brightness level of this LCD monitor...it really *is* bright. Turned it down to about 30% and upped the contrast a bit though and all is good. While not the highest contrast ratio of the pack, this monitors has blacks that appear black and vibrant colors that appear true to life! Overall, an extremely worthwhile purchase!!

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent monitor
I've owned this monitor for about 3 months and I am very pleased with its performance. I use it primarily for web and office work and I find its display to be far superior to all other LCDs I have used (mostly made by DELL). Text is extraordinarily clear, colors are bright and accurate, and the response is fast enough that scrolling text, etc. causes only barely noticeable blur. I have tried the monitor with a few 3D games and have never found a game that moved fast enough to make its response even slightly unacceptable. And on top of its performance, it looks really nice and appears to be built very well. This monitor leaves me with no desire to ever look at a CRT again.

My only complaint would be that it is difficult to get the monitor to display a true black, so in watching DVD movies the borders tend to glow. This, however, is still a problem with all but the best modern panels and you will surely pay a steep price premium for any of those. Other reviewers have complained about the poorly-labeled buttons; it's true that they are hard to read but after getting the monitor set up initially, I have never needed to make any adjustments. This should be considered only a very minor issue.

If you are looking for a 17" LCD and price is any concern at all, get this monitor and you will not regret it. Actually, even for a higher price I can't think of many features/etc that could make another monitor much more desirable.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great monitor for a great price
The NEC 1760V is an amazing monitor. No noticeable ghosting whatsoever (and I do a lot of fast paced gaming like UT2k3). The colour and response time is comparable to more expensive monitors out there. The only thing is that it doesn't have a DVI in, but when I put it side-by-side with my Viewsonic VP171-b which uses a DVI input, the difference was not noticeable at all. Overall, I'd say this is the best monitor you can buy for the price. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars NEC LCD Monitor is Really Good!
In early August 2001 I bought an NEC/Mitsubishi LCD 1700M+ from Amazon.com after a considerable amount of product and price comparison shopping. This display was to replace a CRT 17" display that had failed after years of good service. I expected that the new NEC monitor would be an adequate replacement, taking up much less space and drawing less power from my UPS, while not presenting too many of the problems I thought would be inherent in the LCD technology. In fact, NEC's LCD technology appears to be superior to my previous CRT in almost every way. The colors are more vivid, black is totally dark, the overall image is sharper and much, much brighter. There is no viewing-angle problem: the image at 70-80 degrees off axis is still as bright as my CRT used to be on-axis. This is a very good product.
Update after six months: I still think this is a great monitor, and would recommend it highly. My only complaint is that there is no jack for headphones to bypass the built-in stereo speakers. My old monitor had a jack, so I could listen to webcasts without bothering other folks.

5-0 out of 5 stars Sharp, clear, wide range of brightness.
I looked at quite a few LCD monitors. None were as good as this. Every pixel works, the image is viewable from a very, very wide angle, and the bightness and contrast controls work over a very wide range, which was the most important feature for me. Most monitors provide bright displays, but none other could be dimmed as low as the NEC and still look great. I've found that bright displays and the UV light spectrum from LCD bulbs cause eye strain over time. The dimmer you can set a monitor and still see it well, the easier on your eyes over time it is. No other LCD monitor comes close to the NEC. Give your eyes a break, and buy this monitor! You will have to work with setting up your display: choosing larger display fonts, larger desktop icons, adjusting icon spacing and such to accomodate the 1280x1024 display, but it is well worth the time. This monitor grows on you. At first it seems kind of BIG. After a while, you can't imaging going back to those tiny 15" monitors. You'll love it.

5-0 out of 5 stars A+
Well, I read the disgruntled reviewer's comments about the terribly small text and horrible quality at 1024x768 resolution. First, flat panel monitors (every one that I have ever seen) do not perform very well when they are not set at their maximum (or native) resolution. This is a fact and it's not going to change anytime soon. There are ways to counteract the effects of the really small text if you are a windows user. You can right click on your background and select properties. Click on settings and then advanced. From this location, you can adjust your text size for menus and icons. So, don't let the other reviewer's comments scare you away from a fine monitor. The NEC is extremely bright (I had to set mine at 50% brightness because 100% was just insane) and text is easy to read. It's SO much better than my 19" Trinitron flat screen I can't believe it, and, it is almost the exact same size. BUY THIS MONITOR!!!

5-0 out of 5 stars It was sort of surprising really.
I had a compaq 8000 18" panel already. While I was pretty much happy with the clarity of my old monitor it got a problem that after running two hours it would start to flake out and I got tried of compaq not being able to fix the thing. I decided to buy the nec 1700M+ due to reviews and everyone comparing their models to it, and even though I lost a diagonal inch over my compaq, I felt that the price and reputation it was getting warranted trying it.
In a nutshell, I immediantly carried the compaq to the landfill, this monitor rivals my CRTs (proview, nec and sony) and made me realize the compaq had no business on my desktop. This thing has beautiful color across the spectrum, great contrast and plenty of brightness. While I realize the technology is probably newer than the one I had, I never expected it to be this good. In fact I still look at it in amazement every time I sit down in front of it, the speed, the color the contrast...some day I may be able to stop staring at it long enough to actually get some work done.

5-0 out of 5 stars Are you ready for your next "Wow" toy?
Okay, face it there will be a flat panel monitor in your future sooner or later, so you might consider accepting this pleasure sooner rather than later.

My wife and I have both been using higher end 17" CRT monitors for a couple of years. Hers was a Sony, mine is a NEC, both splendid, high rez CRT monitors.

I bought her this LCD monitor for Christmas. It really knocked her socks off. This thing is clean and crisp and incredible.

One hint here, Amazon ships this monitor in the original factory box which has pictures and lots of clearly identifying typography. If it's for a present, have it shipped someplace besides where the gift recipient lives! Luckily, I had to go to UPS to pick it up so my wife's surprize was not ruined.

After reading some of the other reviews, let me offer a couple of hints. Use this device at full rez. You may have to readjust some of your defaults such as Icon Size - make it the biggest available, because at full rez they will still be small. There may be lots of screen defaults you may have to adjust and that may be a real pain. Live with the pain, you'll be glad you did. If you try to treat this device like your good old 14" EGA monitor that you used on your 286, you will be disappointed. Give it the respect it deserves and use it like the superb hardware gem that it is. If it doesn't thrill you, you are doing something wrong! Run a hot video card or suffer the consequences. If you feed this beast right, it will reward you handsomely.

Keep in mind that this 17" LCD and a 17" CRT are apples and oranges. Aside from the obvious differences, the display size is different. The CRT useable area is usually about 16.1" diagonally while the LCD is 17.0" - really, check it out.

In many of the reviews for cheaper competing models I read comments like, "Just as good as the NEC 1700M+! There were a few dead pixels, but they were barely noticable." If you want to compromise, then compromise. If you don't want to compormise, go with this one. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Value
I just purchased the Mitsu NXM76LCD from Surplus Max, and I am very satisfied with this LCD. At 400.00 this is truely a great buy. We have played some games on this monitor and there is absolutely no problems. The monitor has a great response time. We are using the d-sub connection. This LCD also has a digital hook up as well.
The only draw back is the 1 year warantee, which you can buy from NEC.

1-0 out of 5 stars Directly from an Amazon Service Rep. . .
I purchased this product only to discover it was plagued with technical problems (i.e. constant clicking and loud popping noises emanating from the monitor while in standby, large horizontal stripes running through the entire screen; even while disconnected from a computer). I was then sent a replacement with different problems (same clicking, multiple LCDs defective).

I was then told the following from Amazon:

"I am sorry that your replacement shipment was also problematic.

As it seems that the problem with this item is more widespread than we originally thought, I hesitate to send you another replacement. We will investigate and remedy the situation with the item; however, I cannot guarantee when the error may be fixed.

We will gladly refund you in full for the return of this item." (ironically, you can still purchase this item)

While this monitor has excellent image quality and includes a DVI input, its reliability is a grim issue. I would hesitate following the urge to purchase this product for its cheap price.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent 17" LCD
The DiamondPoint series of LCDs are sold under the Mitsubishi brand primarily to corporate users. We have one here in the office and compared to my office NEC MultiSync LCD1760V, it looks and feels substantially more solid. The image quality is excellent, and it's also in the same stylish black thin-frame enclosure as the LCD1760V. Pure plug-n-play, the NXM76LCD-BK gives you a full 17 inches in diagonal viewable area (13.3" x 10.6"). The max resolution is 1280x1024.

In the end, I think the two LCDs are pretty much identical and both excellent. Just pick the one that's cheaper. ... Read more
